University employees clean up trashed campus Sunday after U-M game When the University of Michigan football team comes to town, there are a lot more than just leaves to pick up on MSU’s campus the morning after.

That’s where MSU employee Lori Meyer and many others come in. Meyer, who works at Spartan Linen Services during the week, said she has been picking up post-tailgate trash as a way to get a little bit of overtime pay at MSU for 10 years now.

Meyer’s day started at 7:30 a.m., like she does every Sunday after a Spartan home game.

She spent her day slowly uncovering the green of the campus grounds again after it was painted red with Solo cups on Saturday.

“It’s exhausting,” she said. “We knew it was going to be like this. It’s bad.”

She said she notices a vast difference between early season games and Big Ten rivalry matchups. Particularly when the Wolver-

ines come to East Lansing.

“The very first game (of the season) is hardly nothing,” said Meyer, as she and her work partner packed a golf cart full of trash bags near the rock on Farm Lane.

But when it’s one of the biggest games of the season, everything changes for Meyer and the rest of the clean-up crew.

“It’s like the difference between a two-hour and a nine-hour day,” Meyer said. “Today’s going to be a seven, eight, maybe nine-hour day for some of these people. No lunch break, just picking up trash.”

Meyer was prepared for the workload she faced Sunday.

“It’s always the Michigan game,” she said of MSU’s messiest tailgates. “Of course, when it’s home. Either that or Ohio State. Whenever it’s the big rival games.” ­ — Greg Monahan

‘Walk of shame’ should be slow and confident The ‘walk of shame’ has trailed the reputations of women for decades, but today the trip home the next morning should be embraced

Heels in one hand, purse in the other, the trek back home early in the morning is one some girls know all too well.

Ah yes, the walk of shame.

Something that some of us are starting to become more and more familiar with as college life trudges forward. Whether it’s that frat guy from last night’s party, the guy from the bar, or that Tinder hookup, the morning after tends to leave us with a sense of regret, hence the name.

It seems as though everyone can tell, from the smeared makeup or ripped tights, that you had a wild night. But what is the problem with that? Is there anything really “shameful” about it?

I don’t think so. There’s no point in being embarrassed

about what you did. If you had fun, then who cares who sees you walk down the sidewalk in your party outfit at 9 a.m.? And if you regret last night, then think of it as a harsh learning experience as opposed to something you should be ashamed of.

You might as well make your way down the sidewalk as though to say, “Yes, I am wearing last night’s clothes and I haven’t showered yet.

I’m not wearing my shoes and I have giant blisters on my feet. I haven’t slept for more than 3 of the past 24 hours, but I got laid.” It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

I’m not saying that this isn’t true for guys as well, but for males it seems to be more of a “walk of fame” as opposed

to “walk of shame.” The guys usually get the high fives and the girls tend to get more of the judgmental stare. The slut-shaming mindset that some people have is part of the reason “the walk of shame” got its namesake.

Women are sexual beings in the same way men are and by teaching them to be ashamed of their walk home from a night out is perpetuating the culture behind disgracing girls for having sex.

I think that the term needs to be dropped. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Being proud shows that you had a fun night in the first place. The best way to let the shaming die is to not be ashamed of it at all. Wear it like a badge of honor and it can’t hurt you.

Commercial businesses dream of a green Christmas

A few weeks ago, I visited my local Hobby Lobby to buy Halloween decor for my dorm room. When I walked into the store, I was greeted by a myriad of plastic pumpkins, festive signs and other fun knick-knacks.

As I made my way down the aisles, though, suddenly I found myself in the middle of a winter wonderland. There wasn’t a single pumpkin in sight, and I was surrounded by Christmas trees, ornaments and Santa Claus figurines.

Just to remind you, this was in early October.

Christmas is the busiest and most profitable time for stores, so it makes sense they want to reel in customers as soon as possible.

However, that doesn’t make it any less annoying.

According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, the average consumer spent approximately $730 last year during the winter holidays. The grand total was $602 billion.

Comparing these numbers to 2013’s Halloween, in which the average consumer spent $75 and the grand total was $6.9 billion, it’s easy to see why stores want to invest more into Christmas.

But just who exactly is in the Christmas mindset in early October, when the temperatures are just starting to dip into the low 60s?

Maybe it’s just me, but I really don’t know anyone who buys Christmas stuff so early.

I don’t imagine stores will be missing out on a remarkable demographic by delaying their winter holiday adornments for a bit.

Retailers should consider the two major holidays that come before Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving, and invest more into them. Instead of trying to perfect the sparkly tinsel wrapped around a massive Christmas tree, retailers should focus on displaying creatively carved pumpkins and, afterwards, cornucopias filled with fake gourds.

Stores should focus solely on Halloween in October, and wait until mid-November to put up Christmas decorations.

I really don’t mean to sound like the Grinch or Scrooge. Christmas music, snow, and gingerbread-flavored coffee drinks are some of life’s greatest pleasures. However, carving pumpkins, bad ghost puns and pumpkin spice lattes are also pretty fantastic, and those things should be just as appreciated as the Christmas alternatives.

African Students Union to hold fundraiser to send supplies to countries hit by Ebola The organization, which includes international students from Africa, is attempting to raise $5,000 to assist West African countries including Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, which have been hit hardest by the virus

For human biology senior Angela Amaniampong, the Ebola virus hits close to home.

The native of Ghana is one of 52 MSU students from West Africa, the region that has been plagued most by Ebola.

As the assistant direct of event planning for the African Students Union, Amaniampong met with other students and community members at the ASU meeting Friday night to show her support of 10,114 cases affected by Ebola in the hardest hit West African countries, including Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, as of Oct. 24.

“I thought that African Students Union can do something about it and give back to our countries back home,” Amaniampong said.

The student union will be holding a fundraiser for two to three weeks to raise money assisting the Liberian Association of Michigan to send a 40-foot container of medical supplies to the countries in need in West Africa. Their goal is to raise $5,000.

Chairwoman of the board of directors of the Liberian Association of Michigan Martha Toe said she thinks because of the strong presence of college students on social media, they would be the best people to spread the word out about such an issue.

Toe said a lot of people don’t have correct information about Ebola and when it’s a threat.

“When you say that you come from Africa, people get afraid,” she said. “They think they’re going to get Ebola from just being in your presence.”

According to both the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization there are four confirmed Ebola cases in the U.S., including one death, as of Oct. 25.

The latest case was confirmed on Saturday. A doctor who just came back to New York City from Guinea was diag-

nosed with the disease.

Director of Epidemiology and Evaluation at the Michigan Peer Review Organization Harolyn Baker, who spoke to the student union Friday night, said the primary form of transmission is through the contact with bodily fluid of an infected person, including coming in contact with the person’s sweat.

Baker said the symptoms of the disease are similar to that of malaria or that of a flu at its worst.

She said the first symptoms include headaches, nausea, high fever and body aches.

“And then when the virus starts to break through the blood vessels, that’s when you see the red eyes, which is a symptom of (Ebola), and you start bleeding internally,” Baker said.

She said one of the main reasons why people were traveling with the disease and testing negative for it was because Ebola has an incubation time of about 21 days. It then takes about 14 days for a person to either recover from the disease or succumb to it.

Baker said new regulations require those who enter the U.S. from the affected countries to call their health department for 21 days to report their health condition.

Liberia is the hardest hit country, with a total of 4,665 cases of whom 2,705 died, according to the CDC. The disease also affected Nigeria and Senegal, but was contained and officially cleared by the WHO Oct. 20 and Oct. 17, respectively.

Amaniampong, who still has family in Ghana, said the country has not been affected by the disease so far because it has taken strict border regulations when it comes to who can enter the country.

“Right now (my family is) very concerned,” she said. “As of now there are no cases in Ghana; it’s just countries surrounding Ghana, so there is fear, and they’re hoping that it doesn’t come in to our country.”

Empower Extraordinary: The Campaign for Michigan State University is a university-wide fundraising campaign intended to create more opportunities for MSU students and faculty.

The campaign will raise money through December 2018, and individual colleges and other units, such as the athletic department, are coordinating their own campaigns.

The university began the silent phase of the campaign in July 2011 and has raised $780 million so far. On Friday, the public campaign was launched at Wharton Center with donors, deans, faculty and students in attendance.

One main goal of the campaign is to increase the university’s number of endowed chairs and professorships. The positions are a means of maintaining and

recruiting the most qualified faculty members, and with 100 endowed chairs and professorships, MSU has fewer than most universities in the Big Ten. Through the capital campaign, MSU also plans on raising enough funds to give out 3,000 scholarships to students, worth approximately $5,000 each, and invest in new buildings and research projects.

President Lou Anna K. Simon said she wants to give every student an equal chance to learn with the best possible resources.

“There is a facilities piece, athletics has the north end zone, but everyone has a piece of (the campaign),” Simon said. “And we simply want to appreciate the value of your degree over time.”

Japan Club’s Curry Party pairs a western theme with authentic fare The annual event at the Spartan Village Community Center combined a live Japanese band and authetic food with a Halloween theme, a holiday not celebrated in Japan

Though students carry their own culture, living and going to school with thousands of others from different backgrounds can influence the customs they practice.

On Sunday, the MSU Japan Club’s seventh annual Curry Party was an example of cultural melding. Although Halloween is not widely celebrated in Japan, the event carried the holiday theme.

“Celebrating Halloween is not something we do in Japan — it’s completely new to us,” president of the Japan Club and mechanical engineering junior Hiroya Miyoshi said.

Still, students in the Japan Club donned vibrant Halloween costumes while showcasing Japanese food and culture.

“I feel like people can’t get to know each other with culture barriers,” Miyoshi said.

“I think that is the biggest barrier between people, second to language.”

Miyoshi said the live Japanese band and authentic food were a part of the club’s attempt to introduce attendees to Japanese culture.

“I think that it is great that everyone can come together at events like this. It creates great opportunities,” advertising freshman Yayun Wang said of the students at the party, who came from multiple cultural backgrounds.

In addition to embracing his own culture, Wang said he also appreciates other cultures.

“I just try my best to make friends who are not only Asian, but are a part of other cultures and backgrounds,” Wang said.

American and Japanese cultures are different in multiple ways, Miyoshi said, from the food to the educational system. And although they embrace many American customs, Japanese culture is very important to students in the Japan Club.

“We want to represent Japan well, we love our country,” Miyoshi said. “The population of Japanese students (at MSU) has greatly declined over the years — we are trying to help MSU sustain its diverse population.”

With multiple cases of credit card fraud currently under investigation by MSU police, the department and financial institutions said students need to be aware of what to do when credit or debit cards go missing, or if fraudulent charges are made to their accounts.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said students should never give their PIN number to anyone, even a trusted roommate or friend.

One of the more recent cases of credit card theft, which was reported earlier this month, involved a female student who believed a roommate or close friend took her card, made fraudulent purchases and

returned it later in the week.

MSU Federal Credit Union Vice President of Corporate Relations Sarah Bohan also advised students not to keep their cards in places where they could be easily taken.

In a second case of credit card fraud involving a MSU student this month, the student did not report the card stolen until after multiple fraudulent purchases were made. If a student discovers their cards have been compromised, Bohan said the most important thing to do is contact the student’s financial institution as soon as possible.

“Usually they’ll ask you to file a police report, then proceed with locking the cards, reissuing new ones, and they will indicate for you to monitor your accounts and transactions,” Bohan said. “Moving forward, they T u esday, October 2 8 , 2 01 4

would help with safeguarding the account, whether it be with password protection or otherwise.”

In addition, Bohan said many students also become victims of phishing scams, in which perpetrators will attempt to gain access to personal information via email.

“These are typically fraudulent. A respectable institution would not send an email requesting information they already know,” she said.

If a student isn’t sure if an email is legitimate, they should contact their financial institution for clarification.

In addition, Bohan said perpetrators will sometimes sell ATM or debit cards they find, making it important for students to block or cancel lost and stolen cards as soon as they notice they are missing.

Seven a cappella groups have created distinct legacies on campus

With seven distinct voices and one common bond, the MSU a cappella community has a long history of creating harmony.

While each of the seven a cappella groups distinguish themselves through their own unique style and image, they all have a place within the supportive a cappella community that fuels their passion for creating and sharing music on campus.

Spartan Dischords Founded in 1982 and continues to be recognized as the oldest a cappella group on campus Each time they enter the stage, the Spartan Dischords have one goal in mind: to make the audience laugh.

Whether it’s interjecting clever comments and jokes during songs, doing impersonations or utilizing unique props, business marketing senior and third year member Alex Collar said the group likes to refer to their unique style as “a fine blend of harmony and humor.”

“We just try to make it light hearted and fun for the audience,” he said. “The biggest compliment that we can get from somebody who comes to our concert is that they had fun and they laughed.”

As the oldest a cappella group on campus, Collar said the Dischords are conscientious about maintaining the traditions that continue to influence the group today. He said the group’s long history allows them to have strong ties with a large network of alumni who frequently assist during their practices and attend the group’s performances.

In accordance with upholding traditions, the Dischords fulfilled another custom this year by taking their turn to host Acapalooza. At this annual event where all seven MSU a cappella groups come together and perform under one roof, Collar said they achieved their goal of gaining valuable exposure for the entire MSU a cappella community by almost selling out both nights of performances.

During Acapalooza this year, Collar said he recognized that the MSU a cappella groups are dedicated to keeping their performances fresh.

“People are getting a lot more excited about (a cappella) than in years past, which makes us more passionate about it,” Collar said. “It’s an exciting time to be a part of a cappella.”

Ladies First Founded in 1985 and remains the only all-female a cappella group on campus While Ladies First strives to captivate the audience with their unique dynamic as an all-female group, their main goal as a team is to enjoy the process of creating music together.

“You really only get to do a cappella while you’re in college, so our goal is to really enjoy our time together as a team,” said computer science and engineering senior and fourth year member Caitlin McDonald.

In their “small group of many big personalities,” McDonald said their unique sound as a group is a result of the interesting musical challenges that they face.

MSU Acafellas Founded in 1996 Musicality and artistry are at the forefront for the MSU Acafellas, which serve as the driving forces behind their performances within the community.

“We are still the smallest a cappella group and we pride ourselves on being small but having a loud and powerful sound that captures people’s attention,” media and information senior and fourth year member Alan Good said. “Once we get our musicality down, we like to bring out our energetic and fun style. I definitely think the more fun and upbeat songs are our thing.”

While the group regularly attends the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, Good said the goal for many members this year is to make it to finals, which is located in New York City. Two years ago, the Acafellas came in second place at semifinals, putting them just

During her years on the team, McDonald said she has watched Ladies First transform from a very traditional a cappella group to one that has expanded upon their skills in agreement with the changing trends of a cappella that so many MSU groups have observed.

“The arrangement style for all of the groups on campus has really changed the last four years, especially with ‘Pitch Perfect’ setting new standards,” McDonald said. “Now that a cappella has a new public image with this film, we feel like we have to raise the bar.”

After starting out as an eight-member group back in 1996, Good said this is the first year the group has hit double digits, with 10 members.

Although they don’t compare in size to traditional a cappella groups, the team does not fall short in their dynamics both on and off stage.

“The Acafellas are the reason I am still at Michigan State,” Good said. “I’ve had a lot of hard times here and the Acafellas are the one thing that keeps me going. We are all pretty much brothers.”

According to Good, this camaraderie extends beyond the boundaries of their own team.

Although most of the MSU a cappella groups compete against each other throughout the year, he said the separate groups will never let the results interfere with the bond they have established.

“You just remind yourself that that’s your aca-family, and that’s who you belong to at State, so you are going to support them no matter what,” Good said.

Spotlight Capital Green Founded in 1998 and remains the oldest co-ed a cappella group on campus While focusing on musicality is important, Capital Green’s main goal during their performances is to project their enthusiasm and passion to the audience.

“We all just have such a bond, which really shows when we perform together,” communication junior Calvin Williams said. “We just have this synergy that comes through.”

While the a cappella group is commonly known for their pop music covers, Williams said they are beginning to take a new direction by straying away from the Top 40 hits that they used to focus on in the past.

Spartan Sur Founded in 2009 as the only South Asian a cappella group on campus For members of Spartan Sur, being part of an a cappella group is a creative outlet that not only allows them to do what they are passionate about, but also provides a unique approach for celebrating their diversity and sharing their culture with students on campus.

As the only South Asian a cappella team on campus, the group combines popular Top 40 songs with Indian music, which adds a worldly tone to their performances.

“For people who don’t generally listen to us, we want them to get interested in this style of music,” said food industry management junior Austin Kurian. “If other students could use our music to invest in Indian culture, that

would be really cool.”

Among the Indian music and Bollywood hits that influence the group’s arrangements, Kurian said they frequently switch between languages in their songs in order to further highlight the diversity of the group and its members.

Last year, the group released their first single of “Love on Top” by Beyoncé mashed up with a Hindi song called “Dildara.” Through the song, the group switches between English and Hindi throughout the verses.

While arranging Western music with Eastern music does present some challenges to the team, Kurian said the group has many knowledgeable musicians who take on most of the responsibilities.

“Since MSU is really big on diversity, we get a lot of chances to perform on campus, which opens up a lot of doors for us,” Kurian said.

For the MSU State of Fifths, a cappella is all about making connections both on and off stage.

“I think people recognize that we connect with each other and the audience while we are performing,” co-president and fourth year member Elizabeth Cooper said. “I think our personal connection and the chemistry we have as a group really is what makes our performances special.”

With influences from the movie “Pitch Perfect” and shows like NBC’s “The SingOff,” Cooper said she has watched a cappella transform and take on new elements during the four years that she has been on the team.

“It’s less about standing in an arc and bouncing up and down, and more about movement and

their repertoire, Williams said the group is able to showcase their versatility.

“As a group, we have a very full sound,” Williams said. “We blend very well together, but everyone has this amazing soloist voice as well.”

As the group continues to work toward improving their sound, adding a few new members during winter auditions, and ensuring that harmony remains at the forefront, Williams said the group’s connection is the most significant aspect of their team.

“It’s not just an a cappella group to us, it’s our friend group,” Williams said. “There’s a real sense of belonging, and I know I will always be greeted with so much love. It’s a family.”

In terms of these influences, the competition referred to as ICCA in “Pitch Perfect” is a real competition that a majority of the MSU a cappella groups compete in each year.

After attending the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella competition every year, Cooper said State of Fifths use their experiences and the feedback from the judges in order to challenge themselves and improve upon their sound.

“We are a new group every year and I hope we can find this group’s niche. Each year there are defining moments and I’m really excited to see where we go this year and what that looks like.”

After humble beginnings in 2007, RCAHppella has emerged from beneath the radar and successfully made a name for themselves within the MSU a cappella community.

While the group was centralized within the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities in their early stages, fourth year member Rebecca Barron said the young a cappella group has been pursuing bigger performances within the community, while building upon their sound as a group throughout the past few years.

“I think this has been one of the first years that we have really locked in the type of sound that we want,” Barron said. “Our sound is very energetic, and I think we bring a lot of fun to the songs.”

The majority of their members are RCAH students, which adds a distinct element to their performances, according to Barron.

“Because we all have the same major, we all have very similar outlooks on life and the world around us, so I think we try to put that into our music the best that we can with the types of songs that we sing and the messages we try to get across with our music,” Barron said.

Last year, Barron said the group’s “Same Love” mash-up was their favorite song to perform, because they are all very passionate about the movement towards equal marriage rights in the country.

“Our goal is to just always be doing our absolute best while still having a really great time together, because if we aren’t having fun, then what’s the point?”

Students now have more platforms than ever for schoolwork, with devices like budget-priced Chromebooks, ultrabooks like the Macbook Air and a plethora of tablets running Microsoft’s Windows, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Mistretta. And demand for higher-end models is growing, at least at MSU. “With students, the MacBooks have been the most popular,” Mistretta said.

“Normally, the (standard) MacBook is the most popular, but now most people are buying the Retina and Air MacBooks.”

At the computer store, tablets range from $150 to $750 and laptops range from $460 to $2,300.

MSU alumnus Suny-Ki Shin uses a Windows laptop and iPad and said both have their benefits.

“I use my laptop to play more games,” Shin said. “(My iPad) is much better for note taking ... I actually like typing on (my iPad) much better.”

The research firm International Data Corporation projected that the tablet market will continue to outpace the growth of laptops and desktop computers through at least 2017.

Supply chain management sophomore Matthew Dickinson prefers to use a laptop instead of a tablet.

“You get more for your money and a bigger screen,” Dickinson said. “I like having a physical keyboard and keypad.”

Another laptop alternative is Google’s Chromebooks. Starting at $199, Chromebooks have the typical laptop appearance with a simple interface and low storage that revolves around Google chrome and other cloud-based Google services such

as Google Drive.

According to ZDNet, Chromebook shipments have risen 67 percent compared to 2013. Students like Chromebooks for their usability and streamlined interface that isn’t clogged with dozens of apps.

Bridging the gap between tablets and regular laptops are so called “hybrid computers.” These laptops tend to have the appearance of a typical laptop but can transform into a tablet and include a touchscreen.

Unlike Apple, Microsoft is pushing the hybrid laptop trend with the recently announced Surface Pro 4. These Microsoft tablets are beginning to replace both the tablet and laptop in the business field to save costs on buying both a laptop and iPad, according to Christian Post. This is partly due to the fact that the tablets can run full versions of the Microsoft Office services.

With these new hybrid laptops, many laptops have started to downsize.

“Everything is getting lighter and smaller,” Mistretta said. “It’s weird because the phones are getting bigger while the computers are getting smaller.”

Despite all the hype on new types of laptops, Dickinson thinks regular laptops will continue to control the market.

“The laptop market won’t really change,” Dickinson said. “The laptop with a keyboard attached to the screen is going to be around for a long time.”

Show your Halloween and Spartan spirit with MSU jack-o’-lanterns

As Halloween draws near, carved pumpkins are lining the sidewalks and windows of houses in East Lansing.

Pumpkin carving is a Halloween pastime, whether you are a carving artist or can barely make a design.

To celebrate the season and show Spartan pride, here are some steps to creating MSUthemed pumpkins.

You will need:

Pumpkins to carve Tape 1 sharp knife 1 pumpkin carving kit, complete with utensils to poke holes in the pumpkin and scoop out pumpkin guts Newspaper (not The State News!) to cover the area you are carving — because carving pumpkins can be a messy activity.

To begin, find a large picture of the MSU Spartan head, block S or another design to print.

1. Make a hole at the top of your pumpkin and pull out the stem.

2. Scoop out all the guts inside of the pumpkin. If you want, keep the seeds because they can be roasted for a snack.

3. Print out the design and tape all the edges to your pumpkin.

5. Once all the holes are made in the pumpkin, remove the decal and use a knife to begin carving. Follow the traced holes with the knife carefully to avoid messing up and cutting outside of the design.

To display the pumpkin, insert a green light to shine on a porch or in a window.

No. 8 MSU football never trailed on Saturday, knocking off in-state rival Michigan, 35-11, at Spartan Stadium.

MSU (7-1 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) used three touchdowns in a 9:08 stretch that ranged from the second to third quarter to pull away against U-M (3-5 overall, 1-3 Big Ten). With the win MSU remains in the College Football Playoff conversation and will turn its focus to No. 13 Ohio State in a couple of weeks.

Run this state When you look back at this week’s matchup against U-M, the one word that comes to mind is domination. And that can truly be said about not just Saturday, but the recent series against the Wolverines.

With the 24-point victory on Saturday, MSU has won six of the last seven meetings with U-M. Not only have the Spartans beaten U-M six out of the last seven tries, but done so convincingly. MSU has outscored the Maize and Blue 102-43 over the last seven games, including five double digit Spartan victories during the stretch.

Langford exploding After a lackluster start to the season, senior running back Jeremy Langford has exploded onto the scene in Big Ten play.

Similar to last season, it took Langford until the fourth game to finally pass the century mark in a game against Wyoming and since then he has looked incredible. Langford has racked up 501 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in MSU’s four Big Ten games, including 177 yards and three touchdowns this past week against U-M. Following the game co-offensive coordinator Dave Warner said Langford simply has proven he plays his best ball when league play begins — including 12 straight Big Ten games with more than 100 rushing yards — and is back in the groove after his impressive week against the Wolverines.

Geiger struggles continue After missing one field goal all last season, sophomore kicker Michael Geiger is an abysmal 7-12 on the season, including another missed field goal on Saturday.

Geiger missed a 36-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, giving him a fourth straight game with a missed attempt.

Head coach Mark Dantonio said on Sunday that the wind played a role on Saturday’s missed field goal attempt and has lost no confidence in Geiger. I find that hard to believe and if this trend continues, especially against a team like Ohio State in a couple of weeks, MSU could be burned and watch the whole season go down the drain.

Biggest game of season ahead Beating U-M is something MSU players, coaches and fans always take to heart, but it by no means will be the most important game of the season for the Spartans.

MSU will have next week off with a bye, which Dantonio said during his weekly Sunday teleconference will serve as time for players to rest up and relax, and then Ohio State comes to town on Nov. 8. The game against the Buckeyes will be the first of the final four-game stretch to end the season, a stretch that will make or break MSU’s season.

A win against Ohio State will put MSU in position where it’ll be favored to win out. And as everyone who follows the program knows, winning out for MSU could — and in my mind should — result in a playoff berth for MSU. So while beating U-M is special every year, the next one will be the game Spartans will talk about for years — win or lose.

MSU will not be held legally responsible for an injury that took place on campus in 2012.

Alexandra Pew, a high school student visiting campus during the evening of March 25, 2012, was staying with friends who lived in Case Hall when she fell backwards through a window on the sixth floor.

After visiting a fraternity party, Pew and friends returned to Case Hall, where a night receptionist allowed MSU student Jason Matney and his three guests to enter the building.

While they were “goofing around” in the hall, Pew sat on a window ledge and suddenly fell, according to the court decision.

The recent court decision declared that because Case Hall is a residence hall that remains closed to the public from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., MSU could not be held accountable.

MSU and Penn State will compete in their 21st annual blood drive in November

With the help of the American Red Cross, MSU and Penn State University will once again use their rivalry for good to save lives during the 21st Annual “MSU-PSU Blood Challenge” taking place over a three week period in November.

The challenge will be held from Nov. 3 to Nov. 21. According to an American Red Cross press release, donors can participate by stopping by one of the more than 40 blood drives included in the challenge, where free MSU-PSU Blood Challenge t-shirts will be given out and prizes from local businesses will be

raffled off.

While PSU leads the annual win scoreboard at 13-7, MSU won by a “slim margin” of 15 pints last year and are looking for an even bigger win this year, Todd Kulman, communications program manager for the American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region, said.

W hen Penn State Universit y joined the Big Ten, the American Red Cross decided it wanted to do something cool in the Great Lakes region, Kulman said.

“We do a lot of these collegiate rivalries,” Kulman said. “It was bound to happen here in this region.”

impacting more than 200,000 hospital patients depending on blood transfusions, said the press release.

“We try to collect as much as we can,” Kulman said. “It’s a great way to show your Sparty spirit and Sparty pride.”

While the Spartans are looking for another win, Kulman said “the real winners are all those hospital patients” who will receive the much needed pints of blood.

No matter the outcome of the blood drive, Spartan fans can look forward to the football game against PSU on Nov. 29.

The first blood drive will be held Nov. 3 in McDonel Hall from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Check out the American Red Cross website for more information about donating blood.

Her attorney claimed the university had “violated its duty to repair and maintain the building.”

However, because Case Hall had restricted entry to the general public after midnight, the residence hall was ruled not a public building when Pew’s injury occurred.

MSU spokesman Jason Cody said the university’s stance on the issue is quite clear.

“While we regret this situation occurred and hope Ms. Pew continues to recover, we agree with the court’s decision in this case,” Cody said.

In a previous article by The State News, Jason Matney, a biosystems engineering freshman who was with Pew at the time of the incident, said it was incredibly lucky she survived.

“It was honestly a miracle,” he said. “That’s all I can say.”

Moster cracks 2,000 digs, ranks seventh in B1G all-time The senior libero and co-captain had 55 total digs last weekend in games against Ohio State and No. 6 Penn State

Senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster has another honor to add to her already decorated career.

MSU volleyball’s star player recorded her 2,000th dig against No. 6 Penn State on Saturday night in the first set, resulting in a kill by senior outside hitter Taylor Galloway.

“I wasn’t aware of it before this weekend,” Moster said on becoming only the eighth player in Big Ten history to accomplish the feat. “When you sit back and think about it’s pretty cool, not only for my own name but for the program.”

MSU (12-9 overall, 5-5 Big Ten) was not able to defeat the Nittany Lions, losing in straight sets, but Moster was able to move into seventh place all time on the Big Ten career digs list.

Moster, who already leads MSU in all-time digs, finished the weekend with 33 digs. She recorded 22 against Ohio State on Friday night and 11 against Penn State on Saturday night.

Her 11th dig of the night against Penn State came in the third set resulting in a kill by sophomore opposite hitter All-

yssah Fitterer and was the one which pushed her past former Iowa libero Bethany Yeager for seventh all-time.

“She’s elite,” head coach Cathy George said. “We’ve all known she’s elite, but Kori being able to etch her name in the record books both in the Big Ten and here at Michigan State, that’s what happen with special players.”

The Cincinnati, Ohio native currently has 2,008 digs and trails former Purdue libero Kelli Miller by just five digs for sixth all-time.

“It just kind of shows in the struggles of it all and the challenges that every new year brings you’re working for something,” Moster said. “Those individual goals kind of get lost when you’re in the middle of working towards team goals.”

Moster is averaging a little over 16 digs per game and at her current pace, she will finish the season with 502 digs and her career with 2,170 digs, which is eight digs away from fifth all-time in the conference.

The senior libero will have a chance to up her digs total on Friday night when MSU welcomes No. 10 Illinois (16-5 overall, 8-2 Big Ten) to Jenison Field House for a 7 p.m. matchup.
