WeBWorK is an online homework program utilized by classes such as Math 103, Math 132, etc. Basically, homework assignments become available, and you have a limited time to complete them. Unfortunately, I am one of the unlucky students forced to use this program. It doesn’t seem so bad in theory, but in reality, WeBWorK is terrible.

For one, it costs $70 per semester, and no one gives you a heads up until you’re sitting in math on the first day of classes.

It would be one thing if this was a one-time fee, but having to pay every semester seems a tad much.

At the very least, there should be some sort of notice sent out in the summer so financially strained students can figure something out.

Of course, I could understand the $70 fee if the program was fantastic, but that’s not the case.

In fact, WeBWorK is the polar opposite of user friendly. For example, if you want to type in the square root of 31, you need to type “sqrt(31).” This isn’t so bad on its own, but when combined with other numbers and symbols, an equation begins to look more

like a sentence. For visual people, such as myself, it’s easy to get lost within this.

If I’m expected to pay $70 for a program, it should at least offer somewhat decent controls.

Also, assignments on WeBWorK have a “reduced credit period,” when after a certain time period the work counts as 75 percent of the original credit. I don’t understand the point of this. While it’s nice to have a longer time frame to do the work, I think it might be easier and simpler to do away with the reduced credit period.

My roommate uses an online homework program in her Math 116 class called WebAssign, and I’m infinitely jealous of her.

When you get a question wrong multiple times on WebAssign, it gives you help. With WeBWorK, sometimes it might feebly offer help in the form of an obvious hint, such as, “Use the distance formula.”

Usually, though, it will just say, “Incorrect.”

A lso, WebAssign features built-in buttons on each page, so instead of typing “sqrt” you can just click a button.

The code needed to access WebAssign is purchased with the class textbook, which my roommate says was altogether around $100. That was about the price of my math textbook alone.

With cheaper and more efficient options available, such as WebAssign, WeBWorK shouldn’t even be considered an option.

Eating alone is not as bad as it seems

The first time I ate alone on campus, I was extremely self-conscious.

“What if people think I have no friends? I bet I look pathetic. I feel like such a loser.”

It took me back to those painful middle school experiences of being the geek at the lunch table, as though I were waiting for the bullies to come out and point and laugh at me.

Never mind the fact that there were dozens of other people eating alone and I wasn’t thinking any of those things about them. Maybe it was because I was still new, or because I hadn’t really found many friends yet, but for some reason I thought that people were judging me, this random freshman who was completely irrelevant to their lives.

Mornings are usually a solitary dining experience, where people are trying to eat their food as fast as they can just to get some sustenance before class. I never really mind eating alone in the morning because I’m usually too zombie-like to talk to anyone anyway.

Although as the day progresses, it seems more and more people show up in the dining hall with friends. Sometimes they’re not even eating, they’re just there to socialize.

Occasionally, I’ll do the subtle walk-around during dinner to see if I recognize a familiar face, but if I don’t, I usually just take a seat and pull out my phone. Sometimes I bring work to pretend like I’m too busy for people to bother me anyway, but that’s never really the case.

It took me a few times of eating alone to realize something. Everyone was probably too busy thinking the same things about themselves, or had come to the realization that I recently came to a long time ago: absolutely no one cares.

Sure, sometimes it’s nice being able to share a meal with friends after a long day, but it’s not something that’s completely necessary. Maybe you’re busy, maybe your friends are busy, maybe you’re just hungry. The point is it’s not a big deal.

What I’ve learned a lot of the time is that other people don’t mind eating alone. From the times I’ve asked if someone wants to sit with me or people I’m with, they usually say they’re in a rush or they may just enjoy the solitude.

Whatever the case may be, there’s no reason to be ashamed of eating alone. Sometimes eating is a social experience, but sometimes it’s not.

And for those days where we just feel like escaping the gaze of people in the dining hall, we can always be thankful for the Combo-X-Change.

Dream of attending college, despite illness, inspires rival stadium run

On Friday, before the MSU and University of Michigan football teams went against each other on the field, students from both universities had a friendly rivalry off the field. In a new tradition called Alex’s Great State Race, both sides aimed to raise the most awareness and funds for student disability services.

ROTC cadets from the Spartan Battalion and the Wolverine Battalion joined Playmakers’ ultra-marathon runners Michael Richmond and Derrick Guty for a 64-mile run from the Big House in Ann Arbor to Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, carrying the game ball.

“At first I wanted to do a big run for selfish reasons, but when I heard about this event last minute, I thought, ‘Why not run for a great cause?’”

Guty said.

The race was held in memory of former Spartan Alex Powell, who was diagnosed with a rare aggressive cancer. His dream was to become a Spartan, and MSU’s Resource Center for Persons With Disabilities supported him when he was a student.

Powell started at MSU in 2010 and passed away on May 8, 2011.

Who it’s helping All of the funds raised from Alex’s Great State Race will go toward helping students at both schools like kinesiology junior Kate Rendi, who also traveled the 64 miles between U-M and MSU last Friday morning. Rendi didn’t attend as a runner or a fan, but as a patient.

Rendi was diagnosed with cancer her senior year in high school in March 2012.

“I didn’t get upset, but rather asked three questions,” Rendi said when she found out about her disease. “‘Am I going to lose my hair? Can I go on spring break? Can I still attend State in the fall?’”

She said the answers were yes, no and we’ll see, respectively.

“Making it through high school graduation and prom with my shiny, bald head sure fueled my determination to make it to MSU in the fall,” Rendi said. “This is when the Resource Center for Persons With Disabilities came to my rescue.”

RCPD informed Rendi’s professors of her situation and helped her figure out how to keep up with

classes while she was going through radiation.

The center also offered transportation to help her get through the long winter months on crutches.

Without RCPD, Rendi said she wouldn’t be able to be the director of the student organization Spartans Fighting Cancer, an Izzone member and a kinesiology major with plans of PA school.

“Without RCPD, I wouldn’t be a Spartan,” Rendi said.

Making a difference Alex Powell’s mother Juliana Powell said all her son really wanted to do was make a difference.

With this race, she said, he’s still able to do that.

Beyond the fundraising, Hudson said the race helped to raise awareness about on-campus disability services at MSU and U-M. He said these programs are an important opportunity for many people, like Alex Powell and Ren-

di, who will face challenges and desire to succeed despite disability.

Where funds are going Director of the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities at Michigan State University Michael Hudson said students come to MSU with all sorts of ambition and excitement, but disabilities can provide a great number of challenges. He said he also understands that disabilities vary from student to student.

“We see a lot of students with learning disabilities who need tutoring, so we want to enhance tutoring opportunities,” Hudson said. “We know technology is hugely important in helping people be independent if you have a disability like a reading disability, visual or mobility.”

With money raised through Alex’s Great State Race, he said they’ll be able to do more with coaching, tutoring and technology.

“This funding gives us the ability to meet those needs and to really say, ‘Let’s try it. Let’s go for it.’” Hudson said.

Exceeding goals Hudson said they’ve reached 150 percent of their fundraising goal from the race and are not done yet.

“Our countdown timer runs out in about 60 days, so there’s still some post-race opportunity here,” Hudson said. “It’s an all-American rivalry that people can really get behind.”

He said they set their goal at $10,000 and raised $15,000 already. Hudson said U-M raised a little more than $10,000 for their disability center, Services for Students with Disabilities.

ASMSU weighs country act for Feb. concert Country will likely be the genre of the next concert for MSU students at Breslin Center, as ASMSU approved Thursday to allocate $100,000 towards a concert early next year.

While nothing is yet set in stone, the bill to allocate up to $100,000 from special projects passed at the assembly with 25 voting yes, five voting no and one abstention after almost an hour of debate and discussion.

More details emerged about the concert ASMSU plans to organize at the general assembly meeting.

ASMSU decided, with outside help, that country would be the most likely to sell enough tickets to make a profit. For example, an R&B perform-

er would most likely leave 40 percent of the tickets unsold, Vice President for Finance and Operations Greg Jackson said.

“We’re fairly certain that a country concert would sell the best, based off professional advice,” ASMSU President James Conwell said.

ASMSU officials said they consulted Pure Promotions, a Lansing-based sales, entertainment and marketing firm.

Many who had reservations with the bill took issue with both the genre and the lack of knowledge presented at the assembly. Dolores Sinistaj of James Madison College expressed that she was hesitant to vote to allocate that much money without knowing who the performer was. Another point brought up was that the special projects fund, consisting of $131,000, will be limited for

the time being.

The bill does not guarantee the money will be spent. The bill merely allocates funds, so if something fell through no money would be spent.

However, no artist could be approached with offers before the money was actually allocated

by ASMSU. For this reason, many of the specific details of the concert are yet to be announced as ASMSU could not get most of the work started until Thursday when the bill passed.

First estimates put the number of tickets that will be offered at 6,000.

Social relations and policy major Wyatt Ludman, who sits on the steering committee, said that this would be a good move for ASMSU because it would be the best balance of student satisfaction while also being able to balance ASMSU’s ability

to replenish its funds.

No money will be removed from ASMSU’s funds until the day of the concert, and all profits will also return to ASMSU’s accounts the day of the concert.

ASMSU is taking into account that it is being treated as an investment and not just an event.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Teresa Bitner said that the planning for the concert is going to need trust from ASMSU members and that they are going to need to take chances in order to be successful.

“I think this is going to be a good thing to take a risk for,” she said.

More details on the specifics of the concert will come in a few weeks, with the actual performer being announced in two or three weeks at the earliest, Chief of Staff Kiran Samra said.

For a student who is not heavily invested in Spartan football, gameday down Shaw Lane and Wilson Road could still be quite the experience.

From halfway across campus one could hear the monstrous roars coming from the stadium, although that’s just in the distance. Parts of campus with the highest number of tailgaters had their own energetic atmosphere.

Both proud MSU fans on home territory and dedicated U-M fans showed up early for pregame tailgating. Barbecues, loud music, tents, blocked off roads, disposed red Solo cups and broken beer

bottles littered the scene, which didn’t subside until long after the game was over.

Some groups of people showed split allegiances for the rivalry game, with MSU fans and U-M fans tailgating together in a show of friendly competition.

A select few walked down the streets with signs, looking to buy some last minute tickets. Others even walked down the sidewalks selling merchandise, though in some areas, masses of people and creatively-parked cars left a person with a slim chance of success in reaching customers.

The garbage covering the roads and sidewalks the next morning was evidence of the campus-wide party that took place — a celebration of the defeat MSU handed to U-M.

The game against Michigan is always one of, if not the biggest, game of the year for MSU. Regardless of the records, rankings or lopsided predictions, MSU players and coaches considered this week the most important game of the season for many different reasons. As senior wide receiver Tony Lippett said, it’s bringing Paul Bunyan “back to the crib.”

However, this year was different for MSU because they were expected to win, and win convincingly against hated in-state rival Michigan.

And while it felt different at the beginning of the week, the result was still the same as recent years at the end of the week.

MSU (7-1 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) never trailed on Saturday, handling U-M (3-5 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) in an easy, 35-11 win from Spartan Stadium. The win improved MSU’s home winning streak against U-M to four games and marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the Paul Bunyan Trophy will reside in East Lansing.

“We’re out here trying to win every game, (but) this game just means a little bit more,” senior free safety and team captain Kurtis Drummond said.

“It’s all about bragging rights, and who owns this state. To win this game we’re definitely excited, we won’t underplay it at all. We’re all very excited.”

pride at stake If there ever could be any more bad blood between the two rivals, U-M found a way to add to it before kickoff on Saturday.

Right before the opening kickoff, U-M junior linebacker Joe Bolden stabbed a tent spike into the field of Spartan Stadium. U-M head coach Brady Hoke issued a statement on the incident on Sunday, stating the stake was used during a Friday night meeting as a motivational tool and a team leader elected to bring it on the field.

The stake ultimately turned into a motivational tool for MSU, instead of U-M. “Everyone saw when they ran out and stuck the dagger on our grass and disrespected us right out of the gate,” junior quarterback Connor Cook said.

“We weren’t having that.”

MSU certainly was fired up immediately after the incident, driving down the field on the opening possession to take a lead they would never surrender.

The spearing incident not only resulted in more motivation early on, but at the end of the game as well. After recovering an onside kick with 3:39 left in the game and leading 28-11, MSU could have easily ran out the clock and took a knee to finish the game.

However, head coach Mark Dantonio wanted to make a statement. Dantonio kept his foot on the gas pedal, electing to continue running the ball

Spotlight aggressively in the final minute. The attack resulted in a touchdown by senior running back Jeremy Langford with 28 seconds left in the game.

Dantonio said afterward that the stake incident was disrespectful to MSU and served as reasoning for the late game call to continue scoring.

“I felt like we needed to pop one, I felt like we needed to drive a stake through them at that point,” Dantonio said. “The little brother stuff, all the disrespect, it didn’t have to go in that direction. We’ve tried to handle ourselves with composure. That doesn’t come from the coach, that comes from the program.

“Throwing the stake down in our backyard back here and coming out there like they’re all that — it got shoved the last minute and a half and we weren’t going to pull off of that.”

Domination on the ground Entering the week, it was well known how important it would be for MSU to establish the run.

The winner of 41 of the previous 44 games between the in-state rivals was also the winner of the ground game. MSU added to that streak on Saturday, outrushing U-M 219-65.

MSU’s rushing attack was led by Langford, who racked up a career-high 177 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries. All of Langford’s touchdowns came from within the five-yard line, consistently plowing over Wolverine defenders throughout the afternoon.

Following the game, co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Dave Warner said he didn’t realize the large number of carries Langford got, but felt like he had the hot hand on Saturday.

“Jeremy is playing at a high level, a lot similar to last season, when the Big Ten season rolls around he turns it up,” Warner said. “He had a great game, he has been playing good the last couple of weeks.”

On the other side of the ball, MSU’s defense was again able to hold U-M to under 100 yards on the ground. U-M’s leading rusher, sophomore running back De’Veon Smith, had only 39 yards, and MSU’s defense never surrendered a run longer than 13 yards on Saturday.

Despite giving up a late touchdown for the first time in three years against U-M, defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi was proud of his defense’s performance against U-M, stating not only did the unit contain the rushing attack but the passing as well.

“Our kids played tough all day,” Narduzzi said.

“I think we gave up less than 200 yards. Any time you do that, against any offense, I don’t care who you’re playing, that’s a good thing.”

Seniors going out on top For 17 MSU seniors, they’ll remember walking off the field their final time against U-M hoisting Paul Bunyan.

With another dominating victory against the Wolverines, this senior class will finish with a 3-1 record against U-M. During the stretch, MSU outscored U-M 102-43, with the lone loss coming in 2012 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

“It means everything,” Rush said on getting the victory in his final game against U-M. “It’s amazing to walk out of here at the end of the year knowing we beat them again. I won’t have to look back and think about losing to Michigan when I’m older. It’s something special for sure.”

Similar to Rush, senior linebacker Taiwan Jones was all smiles after the game knowing he’ll have another win over U-M under his belt.

was called for a roughing the passer and targeting penalty in the second half. The play was reviewed and the targeting penalty was overturned by the officials so Jones was able to remain in the game.

He said tears nearly came to his eyes during the post-game review as he realized he might not be able to finish his final game against U-M, but luckily the play was overturned.

“Thirty years down the line I can say I beat Michigan in my last time playing,” Jones said.

Looking ahead to Ohio State While Saturday’s victory over U-M will not be forgotten by players, coaches and fans anytime soon, MSU’s next challenge could stand as the program’s biggest game in recent memory.

chances, with a loss eliminating MSU from the conversation.

Ohio State will most likely enter the game undefeated in league play — Buckeyes are heavy favorites next week against Illinois — and potentially ranked in the top 10. Junior defensive end Shilique Calhoun said MSU will go over game tape from U-M before transferring the focus to Ohio State, but the magnitude of that matchup is still understood.

Dantonio jokingly said he’ll find out in a couple of weeks whether or not it was a good time to have a bye, but regardless the Ohio State game will serve as the next crucial step in MSU’s chase for another Big Ten championship.

“We are eight games in and going into the stretch of November when you have to make a championship run,” Dantonio said. “First one up is Ohio State so that will be a test for us. We still have four games to go, and all of them will be exciting and great games.”

With a lengthy deck and flexible build, longboards are meant to allow boarders to turn and cruise with ease. Seeing a longboarder or two going from class to class is a common sight.

But there are restrictions on longboarding on campus, many of which MSU students are unaware of.

Mechanical engineering freshman Evan Finses said he doesn’t have much trouble weaving through people and traffic on his way to classes, but sometimes his board can be inconvenient.

“The only trouble I’ve had is more really just involved with taking my board into the cafeteria,” Finses said.

“For whatever reason, Brody caf is really anal (retentive) about not taking your board into the caf.”

Because longboards were not allowed in dining halls in the past, confusion about the rule change prompted disagreements between workers and students trying to carry them inside.

According to Associate Director of Residential Dining Bruce Haskell, longboards are allowed in dining halls.

“We were shooting for something that was reasonable,” Haskell said of permitting longboards in dining halls. “Because as soon we take control of it like making them leave it at the entrance, then we’re assuming responsibility for (the longboard) and we can’t do that.”

Although longboards have become more frequently used on campus in recent years, MSU alumnus Jim MacGregor realized there wasn’t a store

within walking distance of campus that catered to the longboarding crowd. To fill that void, MacGregor opened Action Board Sports in East Lansing three years ago.

MacGregor said the growth of his inventory and sales reflect the growing popularity of the activity itself.

“It had to do with the growth of longboarding nationwide,” MacGregor said.

“The only trouble I’ve had is more really just involved with taking my board into the cafeteria.”

But with its popularity have come restrictions.

Mechanical engineering freshman Lewis Johnson was riding his longboard from class one day on Chestnut Road. Johnson was boarding in the bike lane, unaware that it was a civil infraction. Johnson said a police officer stopped him and said he would receive a citation if he was caught boarding in the bike lane again.

“He said it was against the rules and not against the law,” Johnson said.

According to MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor, longboarders and skateboarders are treated as pedestrians. They are allowed to ride on side-

walks and crosswalks, but bike lanes are strictly for bikes. Parking ramps are also off limits for longboarding.

When students board in restricted areas, law enforcement can get involved.

“They could receive a citation and those fees are set by the court. There’s certain areas on campus that are marked where they are prohibited,” McGlothian-Taylor said.

It is out of the MSU police department’s reach to deal with boarding off-campus, but the East Lansing Police Department can issue citations.

Boarding violations assessed by East Lansing’s 54-B District Court can cost up to $60.

Though there are restrictions, convenience and security play a large role in students’ preference for longboarding over other forms of transportation such as bicycling.

The chances of getting a longboard stolen are slim — it goes everywhere with its rider. Instead of locking it up outside, students bring their boards into class where they can keep a close watch on them.

According to MSU police, approximately 335 bike thefts were reported in 2012. In 2013, the number increased slightly to approximately 350 bike thefts. Since January, there have been 219 reported bike thefts.

Computer science freshman Turner Anderson said he sees more and more people taking up longboarding.

While changing regulations on campus and in dining halls reflect the growing popularity of longboarding, they could also change how and where students ride their boards.

Friends for Inclusive Sport works to change the lives of special needs children

Caroline Thomas was addicted to cocaine and alcohol at birth. At the age of 5, she was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“She’s my miracle girl,” Mabel Menadier-Thomas said of Thomas, her adopted daughter.

Now as a young adolescent, Thomas is able to attend school, and Menadier-Thomas said she is an incredibly outgoing individual. During the Friends for Inclusive Sport Halloween scavenger hunt on Sunday, Thomas continuously talked with FIS volunteers about Spongebob, shopping and the scavenger hunt. Yet Thomas doesn’t always get social opportunities such as this.

Menadier-Thomas also has a son who is on the autism spectrum, and she has seen first-hand how her children are ostracized because they are different.

“They are the kids who don’t get invited, the kids who don’t get included,” Menadier-Thomas said.

She said she believes FIS is important because it reaches out to young adults like Thomas and make them feel included. Menadier-Thomas said the scavenger hunt gave Thomas a chance to make a social connection outside of school, and the community could do a lot more to reach out to others like her.

That is exactly what FIS is striving to do. Special education senior Meggie Meter, the founder of the group, said FIS seeks to bring communities of all abilities together through physical activity to promote physical and social growth. The long-term goal is to raise funds for a big event at the end of the year, but for the short term, FIS will be hosting “mini” events such as the Halloween scavenger hunt.

PALS, a summer camp for kids with Down syndrome, came up with the idea for FIS and contacted the Capital Area Down Syndrome Association to get it started.

Meter, who interns at CADSA, said she bonded with Price over their love of people. Meter said that she and every member of FIS care about affecting even just one individual.

“I don’t want to change statistics, I want to change lives,” Meter said.

She said she believes that everybody deserves to reach their highest potential, whether they have a disability or not.

“We’re afraid to push kids because we’re afraid they’re soft,” Meter said. “But you’ll never know what someone can do until you give them the chance to do it.”

Meter’s first experience with special needs was as a counselor at a YMCA summer camp. A young child was floating in an inner tube on a hot day and no one could get him out. When Meter saw his fascination with her freckles, she told him he could count a freckle for every step he took.

This is why Meter believes it doesn’t take a special person to work with special needs.

“It’s the kid that is special, and they deserve someone who just has a little more patience,” Meter said.

FIS secretary and microbiology junior Sarah Mourtada said she likes the idea of keeping kids, with or without disabilities, active.

“If I’m going to get involved in a club I’d rather it be one that helps the community as well as MSU,” Mourtada said.

FIS will kick off their fundraising with a fundraiser this Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tropical Smoothie, followed by another from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 19 at Firehouse Subs.

Serengetee representatives offer customizable clothing, give back to worldwide causes

While she anxiously waits for her latest online shopping order to arrive in the mail, Spanish senior Skylar Taylor said she finds satisfaction in knowing that her purchase is not only enhancing her wardrobe, but it’s contributing to a cause across the globe as well.

After hearing about the company Serengetee through social media, Taylor is now among a group of seven other MSU students who serve as campus representatives for Serengetee, a growing company that has gained momentum due to their philanthropic mission.

Serengetee is a clothing line that purchases fabrics from different markets throughout the world to create customizable shirts and accessories.

The company was established in 2012 out of a college dorm room by three who were inspired after visiting clothing markets in more than 15 countries during a study abroad program.

After customers choose the unique pattern that they want embellishing their clothing, 5 percent of their purchase supports a spe-

cific cause within the country that this fabric originated from.

With their slogan, “Wear the World, Change the World,” Serengetee currently represents 28 countries and 32 different causes.

“I think people our age are really looking to get involved and donate, but they don’t always have the time or money,” Taylor said.

“We might not all get to travel the world, but we can all make a difference.”

According to their website, Serengetee has donated about $125,000 to causes within the 28 countries that are represented, and they are now one of the fastest growing clothing brands in the world with over 300,000 supporters.

“I really love helping this company grow,” Taylor said. “I want to be able to help these college students see their whole plan go into motion.”

The company has campus representatives in every single state, including some parts of Canada, who are responsible for promoting the company’s mission and spreading the word to students primarily through the use of social media.

These representatives are divided into eight regions and challenge each other in

various competitions throughout the semester to see which region is the most successful in getting college students interested. The region that wins each competition receives free Serengetee attire and accessories, which helps them to further promote the brand at their university.

During MSU’s three-week takeover that began last week, physiology sophomore Sydney Davis, a Serengetee representative, said all the campus representatives are expected to increase their efforts in representing the business by sporting Serengetee attire around campus, handing out fliers, and starting conversation with students.

“A lot of the girls from my sorority have already come up to me in the past week wondering where they can get the Serengetee shirts,” Davis said. “Just seeing that response from my small group on campus is really cool.”

Davis said after hearing about the company two years ago, she applied to become involved with Serengetee because she is passionate about what they stand for.

“Even though campus representation is just a small portion, I think it’s a very important portion and I’m glad that I can help,” Davis said.

To welcome the oncoming men and women basketball seasons, fans filled the stands of Breslin Center on Friday night for Midnight Madness.

Men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo and Spartan players were dressed in all leather, face paint, and bulky boots to be the rock band KISS for the evening.

“Rock & Roll All Nite” was performed, while cheerleaders and current basketball players acted as the mosh pit in front of the main stage.

“It’s kind of an incredible year for us — we have a bunch of new guys. If they play like they worked this summer, then this (season) we are going to have a heck of a team,” Izzo said.

“We’ve gone too long without a national championship.”

Izzo made a joke during his speech that normal rock bands get off the tour bus with girls surrounding them, but he had his former players.

This annual event began with the MSU fight song, led by the Spartan Marching Band and cheerleading team to kick off Midnight Madness.

The performance by the band and cheerleaders was 10-yearold Josh Boyan’s favorite part.

He attended the game with his father, Joe, and two siblings.

“I went to law school out here and we came out and I wanted to bring my three boys (Josh, Garret and Ryan) out to Michigan State,” New Jersey resident Joe Boyan, the father of the three boys, said.

The free, annual event pumps up those who support the women’s and men’s basketball teams for their upcoming seasons. The crowd was entertained by play-

ers, along with the cheer team, the marching band drumline, and fans themselves.

Basketball musical chairs was played by a group of students for the chance to win a new Verizon Wireless phone.

Contestants walked around the chairs in the middle of the basketball court until Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” stopped.

To continue to the next round, they had to shoot a basket and return to the seats — and the last one standing was eliminated.

Before the women’s basketball team made their grand entrance, T-shirt cannons were used to launch bookstore items to fans while the cheerleaders and band performed.

Women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant dressed up as Beyoncé, while the team and cheerleaders were her background dancers.

“We just wanted to put it out there for you and all our fans because we so appreciate you and what you’re all about and how you support our team,” Merchant said.

The women’s team is coming off a Big Ten championship win, and they intend to do that again, according to Merchant.

Midnight Madness continued with a Spartan shootout, where alumni and fans had the chance to win a basketball signed by Izzo. Wrapping up the night, the men’s and women’s basketball teams scrimmaged.

“I just wanted to come and support the teams and see the new basketball teams. I heard they were going to do some cool stunts so I just wanted to see what they were going to do,” human biology senior Emma Guschewski said. “It turned out really cool.”

MSU field hockey (10-7, 4-4 Big Ten) had a successful weekend as the regular season nears its close, beating in-state rivals No. 7 U-M and Central Michigan. On Friday, the Spartans traveled to Ann Arbor and defeated the Wolverines 2-1 behind goals from seniors Alli Helwig and Allie Ahern.

MSU returned home to take care of CMU on Sunday, shutting out the Chippewas 2-0. Senior forward Abby Barker scored both goals for MSU, giving her a team-leading 14 on the season.

Heading into the matchup with U-M, the Wolverines were tied at the top of the Big Ten standings. With the win, the Spartans not only improved their standing in the conference, but were also able to hurt U-M’s chances at becoming the Big Ten champion.

“We haven’t beat them on their home turf since 2004,” Barker said. “Coming into their brand-new facility and being able to string together 70 minutes of great hockey, it was just a lot of fun.”

Head coach Helen Knull was thrilled following the win, mostly due to the Spartans’ complete performance, but also because it came against their biggest rival.

“It’s always nice to beat Michigan,” Knull said. “I thought we executed well, we finished our opportunities. When we were up ... we stayed calm and poised and we stuck to the game plan, and

we executed.”

Coming off the big win over the Wolverines, MSU started the game against CMU a little slower than Knull would have liked. After the Spartans were able to defeat this same Chippewa team 6-1 in an exhibition earlier this season, MSU didn’t want to put a blemish on their impressive weekend.

“We were pretty sluggish coming out of the gate,” Knull said. “We kind of allowed Central to set the tempo, which was slower than what we wanted to play. So, it was kind of frustrating to watch the first half and then finally we started second half. We were a little more aggressive ... we were getting our opportunities. We were attacking on numbers.”

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Patton registered her second career shutout against CMU, as her defense played well enough to not let a shot on goal. Against U-M on Friday, Patton was a big asset for the Spartans, especially late in the game, as she turned away four shots to secure the one-goal victory.

All four goals scored by MSU this weekend came from three seniors. Barker, Ahern, and Helwig have been vital to the Spartans offensive attack this year. The trio make up the top three scorers for MSU. Knull will have one more game to prepare her team for the Big Ten Tournament, as No. 9 Louisville travels to East Lansing next weekend to take on MSU.
