Tinder users should know what they’re getting into.

Our spotlight story today is about how the popular dating app perpetuates labels and stereotypes. It’s relatively alarming how minor changes in the same profile — a picture of a girl with a bottle of booze swapped with one of the same girl dressed in all black, with eyes heavily lined with black eyeliner, for example — instigated different responses from users.

The profile of the girl with liquor and greek life attire drew more sexually explicit messages than others, and that’s a problem of unfair stereotyping of a large group of women.

It’s old news that we live in a society that regards physical appearance highly. And you could argue that the way a man might swipe right and send a woman a suggestive message on Tinder is no different than if he’d approached her and made the same comment on Friday night at Rick’s American Cafe.

But at least that still encourages faceto-face communication and genuine human interaction.

The concern with apps like Tinder, above even other dating apps, is that there’s not even a minor effort

to match users based on some sort of compatibility. Matches are based on nothing more than mutual approval of physical appearance and proximity.

So, Tinder users should know what they’re getting into. When you invite someone to vote yes or no based on a photo and your age, motives might not always be pure and fostering a real connection will likely be difficult.

Like many inventions of the digital age we live in, Tinder exposes you to people you might not otherwise meet, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

But take it with a grain of salt.

Don’t stop putting yourselves out there. Not just in bars and parties, but in classes, at work, in clubs and organizations at MSU and anywhere else on campus.

Smartphones make it easier to judge books by their covers, without a doubt.

It’s worth the effort not to think of your peers based on their most flattering photographs.

And it’s important to remember that while it’s undoubtedly easier to swipe right or left on your cell phone, it’ll never replace — and it shouldn’t replace — the effort it takes to build strong, lasting friendships or relationships with other people.

‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is a necessary experience

As Halloween is just around the corner, I’ve noticed that something terribly important is missing from the MSU Halloween event list.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

For those of you who don’t know about this cult-classic, let me give some background information. The film is based off of the musical of the same name, which was released in 1973. When the film hit the box office, it completely flopped, but once it began showing as a midnight movie in New York around 1976, audiences started participating with the movie and coming back for more every night. The film has been in theaters ever since, making it longest-running theatrical release in film history.

The first time I ever saw “Rocky Horror,” I was completely shocked. I thought it was the most bizarre movie I had ever seen. Is that transvestite an alien? Are they eating that person they just killed? Are Riff Raff and Magenta incestual? But it was amazing. I had never felt such high energy and excitement in one theater before.

Now you may ask, what is so special about this train wreck of a movie?

First, the costumes. People get completely decked out for these showings. They spend hours on hair and makeup, recreating costumes with perfect precision, trying to look exactly like the recognizable characters they’re about to see on screen.

Next, there’s the participation aspect. The second the recognizable red lips appear on screen for the first song, people in the audience go crazy. They stand up and cheer and immediately start chanting, “Lips! Lips!

Lips!” and “Rocky Horror” officially begins.

It continues like this throughout the film, with people adding their own dialogue and commentary every chance they get.

Audience members also bring their own bag of props to use during appropriate times during the film. For example, a character shouts “A toast!” and the audience throws pieces of toast at the screen. During a scene in the rain, people take out water guns and spray everyone around them.

Admittedly, if you’re not prepared, it can all be a little overwhelming. People are shouting at the screen, creating their own dialogue, taking out lighters, and getting out of their seats to dance the “Time Warp,” but it is one of the most hilarious and best experiences in the world.

If you can make it to a showing sometime this Halloween, I highly recommend it. For the rest of us, we’re just going to have to hope that “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” makes its way back to MSU next year.

Block ‘M’ on U-M campus painted green early Wednesday morning

The gold block ‘M’ symbol on the University of Michigan’s campus was painted over in green and accompanied by a spray painted “S” and “U” next to it early Wednesday morning, according to The Michigan Daily.

The defacing of the U-M emblem, which is an iconic part of the Ann Arbor campus, comes in the midst of rivalry week.

For the second straight year, the Spartans will be taking on the Wolverines at home in East Lansing on Saturday, Oct. 25.

The Spartans have won the last five of the six games played against U-M. This week often has members of both campus communities on edge. Members of the Spartan Marching Band have been guarding the bronze Sparty statue against any vandalism this week as part of an annual tradition.

Students march to City Hall in solidarity with Ferguson protesters, deliver demands

“Indict, convict, send those killer cops to jail. The whole damn system is guilty as hell.”

This was just one of the chants echoed throughout campus Wednesday afternoon as about 200 students rallied to protest police brutality. The protest was part of a national day of resistance to demonstrate solidarity with those in Ferguson, Mo., Palestine and Hong Kong, among other places.

Many of the protesters came specifically to protest the investigation into the killing of Michael Brown, a black Ferguson teen shot by a white police officer last month. Members of the MSU Black Student Alliance, MSU Students United, the Graduate Employees Union and the North American Indigenous Student Organization, among other student groups, helped to stage the march and protest.

Protest co-organizer and East Lansing resident Crystal Gause said she visited Ferguson and learned from the protests there, but hopes the demands presented to the East Lansing Police Department can be resolved in peaceful ways.

Gause presented a list of demands to East Lansing Police Chief Juli Liebler. Gause demanded the department dispose of all military-grade weapons and armored vehicles, which are available to the department through Ingham County military surplus supplies.

Liebler addressed the crowd and said the department would look at the demands and provide a “thought-out” response.

Organizers warned Liebler if the demands weren’t met within a week, the protesters would be back.

Liebler said she had not yet read the demands when she addresses the crowd, and said one week would not be a fair timeline to respond to the demands.

Liebler said the group was welcome to come back next week for a peaceful protest. During Wednesday’s protest, police assisted in directing traffic throughout campus to make way for the march as it snaked from Beaumont Tower to East

Lansing City Hall, where the police department is located.

President of MSU Black Student Alliance Rashad Timmons said in the interim, protesters will “have to stay hungry and motivated” and be ready to return.

Media and information junior Liza Marek said she came to the protest because she identifies closely with Michael Brown and the struggles peo-

ple of color face.

“Black lives matter and I feel like we all need to be in solidarity, whether we’re in Ferguson or not,” Marek said.

“When I think of Mike Brown, I think of my brother because my brother is close to his age and the same build. Take away the name and that’s my brother.”

Members of the community marched alongside students as well. MSU Stu-

dents United member and alumnus Noah Saperstein said while the turnout was greater than expected, he had higher hopes.

“I’m enthusiastic about the student support we’ve received,” Saperstein said. “But unless we have the whole community, all 50 or 60,000 people out here, we will never have enough people.”

Contract estimated MSU would charge $228,335 for filming How much does it cost to have the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum to yourself for a day? Apparently about $3,000.

MSU and Crown City Pictures, a California-based film production company, mutually agreed upon a week-long lease of the museum, according to a Freedom of Information Act request obtained by the Lansing State Journal.

The agreement included a $1,500 per day fee for rental of the Broad paid by the company to MSU for the 23 days of construction

during which the museum remained open, which according to the contract began on Sept. 22. The cost was increased to $3,000 for each of the six days the Broad was closed to the public.

In addition to the cost for rental of the museum, the university also charged almost $70,000 for the removal and reinstallation of the museum’s art. MSU received $2,150 for one “load-in day,” presumably last Tuesday, and $4,300 for each of the three days of filming. Filming is believed to have taken place from Wednesday evening through early Saturday morning.

MSU also charged $19 for each hour worked by the “green coat” event staff and $61 per hour worked by each MSU police officer.

The contract estimated the total cost of the rental would come to $228,335 from the rental, though that’s not a finalized number.

But money isn’t the only thing that the university is walking away with.

Also included in the agreement is an education clause of sorts that required the production company to provide at least one seminar on “subject matter related to general film production taking place at the (Broad) to students of (MSU) at a time and place to be mutu-

ally agreed upon.”

The Lansing State Journal previously reported that the MSU Department of Theatre was in the works of “arranging a session for students with a high-level production person” last week, though it is not confirmed that actually took place.

The contract also requires the film company to acknowledge the university in the film’s final credits.

“Michigan State University and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum will receive a ‘Special Thanks’ credit at the end of the film,” according to the agreement.

New artistic bike racks unveiled across city

Six new artistic bike racks will be installed in downtown East Lansing as part of the city’s efforts to bring more art into the everyday life of residents. The Lansing Economic Area Partnership, the Downtown Development Authority and the East Lansing Arts Commission together gave $20,000 to finance the sculptures that will serve as bike racks and will be installed along Grand River Avenue and downtown East Lansing. Some of the racks have already been installed, while others will be placed in the next several weeks.

Ever wonder what someone’s first impression of you on Tinder is?

Staff reporter Katie Winkler spent two weeks on the popular dating app doing two things: changing her profile pictures to reflect different stereotypes and “liking” every profile she came across to get as many matches as possible

Communication has become a lot less personal since the social media takeover of this generation.

The method for meeting friends and significant others used to mean connecting on a personal level.

But the impersonal nature of social media has pushed our generation to judge others based off their looks and the few sentences in profile.

Tinder, a dating app meant to connect users who are in a certain radius of each other, is solely based on looks, a brief profile and proximity.

Photos of different users pop up on the screen and users can either hit a red X or a green heart to “like” a user or give them a “nope.”

When two people “like” each other, they are notified of the match and are able to message each other.

Assistant professor of education and technology Christine Greenhow said dating websites like Tinder

try to mimic face-to-face dating.

“Your best face is out there to potentially attract other people,” Greenhow said. “With dating sites, you can participate a little bit and the people you are attracted to and that are attracted to you, you have more ways of getting to know each other over time.”

The experiment To see how physical appearances can affect students’ perceptions and attraction to each other, I set out on an experimental adventure. I created a fake Tinder account under the name of Carrie Rogers and the preference was set to only men.

To see the different ways others could perceive me, I changed the pictures on my Tinder profile every two to four days to embody a different stereotype through the course of two weeks. The stereotypes I chose to use for this experiment was my regular daily look, a darker “goth” look, a “party sorority girl” and a “hipster.”

“Stereotypes can be thought of as information that

could be true or false,” said Carlos Navarrete, associate professor of psychology. “Some stereotypes have some truth to them and others are not.”

The only consistent part of my profile was my bio: 19-year-old advertising major at MSU who likes to listen to Coldplay.

To see how many possible matches I could get, when I went on Tinder, I tapped the heart button for every guy that came up. That way I could see the kinds of people and how many thought we were matches, simply based on looks. For the purpose of the experiment, I never initiated or responded to messages.

After completing the experiment, I compared the number of matches and the type of messages each look got.

“People are putting out the most positive version of themselves. That can lead to stereotyping of this ideal version that they want to show to the world or the profile they want others to see,” Greenhow said. “Only knowing the photograph only tells you so much.”

Me, myself and I A typical girl When I began this experiment, putting myself out there as my normal, everyday self made me feel a little uncomfortable. I was nervous about the different comments I would receive and if I would get many matches because I wasn’t dressing up as someone else — this was me.

For the photo associated with this, I just wore a simple sweater.

I’m a 19-year-0ld white girl. I’m a journalism sophomore. I’m not drop dead gorgeous, nor would I consider myself an eyesore. My look is in no way unique, just an average female college student.

I received a significant amount of messages as myself. Some ranged from “hey how are you?” to sexual references, such as the one that said, “I bet you would look adorable grasping the sheets of my bed (winky face).” Some commented on my necklace, others said I was “pretty.” The “winky face” came through in many messages.

When I received vulgar messages, I was offended that these college guys would objectify me like that. But not all the messages were negative. Even though this was not my personal account, being called “gorgeous” by a stranger is a nice feeling.

Overall reflection This experiment may have been unethical, posing as a fake person and making others believe they had a real match on Tinder. But it was interesting to see how the messages and number of matches all varied depending on my outfit.

As Cullen said, the only way to stop stereotypes is by getting to know what someone’s personality is like.

“I think that it’s easy to pass these judgments, but if you go past this and really get to know someone and look inside, rather than what they look on the outside — what they’re wearing, what they are or are not involved in — it would really help to stop these stereotypes,” Cullen said.

Spotlight “Goth girl” a little outdated For this stereotype, I wore heavier eyeliner and dressed in black clothing.

The “gothic” stereotype might be a little outdated, but for the purposes of the experiment, it seemed necessary because it’s still one that people are quick to judge.

I quickly noticed that during this phase, I received a significantly lower number of messages. Nobody commented on my looks, just a simple hello if anything at all.

In what I assume to be a reference to “Carrie,” one user said, “I’ll dump pig’s blood on you ;).”

“Dark” people seem to be associated with personality traits rather than all appearance. Yes, the dark clothing is part of the appearance, but we automatically connect that to depressed, angry, lonely people.

“In some ways, people are forced to rely on stereotypes because they don’t have other information,” Navarrete said. “When in reality, the more you rely on stereotypes, the less information we have.”

For this stereotype, I wore a “go greek” T-shirt, styled my hair and wore a little more makeup.

Greek life often gets a bad reputation for partying, said journalism sophomore Kelly Cullen.

“I think that it’s sad that people have this image of girls that are in greek life,” said Cullen, Panhellenic delegate for Kappa Kappa Gamma. “It’s definitely not about (partying).”

Cullen explained that sororities do much more than have fun.

Members put together community events, raise awareness and promote fellow sorority and fraternity events.

I’m not involved in greek life, so I didn’t know what to expect beforehand. The comments for this type were more objective and offensive.

“My eyes are the only thing I don’t want to take off of you,” one user said.

This type of correspondence was upsetting because I saw firsthand how men judge women in this way based off these stereotypes.

“Hipster” getting ARtsy The way I see it, “hipsters” are linked to this contemporary subculture that believes in independent thinking, art progressivism.

For this section, I wore a flower crown and a loose top. I used a picture I had taken at a concert.

I received messages hinting at these contemporary views that a hippie might have, like all is fair in love and war. They were tamer than the messages sent to my previous accounts.

One of them said, “I could be the six and you could be the nine but thats the only time you’d be less than a dime.”

“Someone can only get so much through a visual image of someone. A photograph is a snapshot in time of the person. … In that way, it would seem to limit how much you could know about the person behind the photograph,” Greenhow said.

This stage was the most successful out of the stereotypes in terms of number of matches and messages.

From this experiment, I can hypothesize that this stereotype was least objectified because my photo portrayed me as a downto-earth person.

First year construction management masters student Amol Tatiya was so preoccupied with midterms that he did not realize one of the major festivals celebrated in his culture was approaching.

“On WhatsApp, I’m on different groups and I keep getting those message like ‘Happy Diwali’,” Tatiya said.

“And that time I realized ‘Oh, yes. I’m somewhere else.’”

The MSU community joined in the Hindi festivities Tuesday night, celebrating Diwali, or the festival of lights.

The celebration was just one part of the biweekly Hindi-Urdu Chai and Chat event, sponsored by the Asian Studies Center and the MSU India Council.

Aditi Tanna, second year masters student in accounting, said Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, a Hindu god, to his city after 14 years in exile.

It is believed that on the day of his return, people lit up the city and were playing with colors in celebration.

“I miss family because it’s a vacation,” Tanna said, adding that Diwali is the second biggest vacation after the summer vacation for schools, and usually lasts three weeks.

“Everyone in the family would be at home and we have a tradition of visiting our elders who are not living in our homes, so grandparents and uncles and aunts, and they give you some money,” she said.

The day the event starts is called

Dhanteras and is a celebration for Hindu Goddess Lakshmi, Tanna said.

People tend to give gifts on that day and be charitable since it is believed that the more one gives, the more wealth and health one will get back in return.

The last day of the festival celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters and is called Bhai Bij or Bhai Dooj.

Despite the events in their home countries being grander, “noisier and more fun,” Tatiya said coming to the event was a positive experience that showed him how people can also be interested in learning more about different cultural festivities.

Fulbright scholar Shakul Tewari said this is one of the main aims of the chai and chat event.

“I think it’s important to come here because we all have certain questions and certain notions about certain countries and communities and ethnicities in our minds,” said Tewari, who is one of the organizers of the chai and chat event. “And since I have come from that country, I think I would be in a better position to comment on it.”

Assistant professor of Hindi Dr. Sean Pue said having such an event helps students studying Hindi and Urdu to practice the languages and also interact with natives of the region.

“I think MSU is fairly weak on South Asian studies so the more we can kind of bolster community for that, the more courses and majors we can offer,” Pue said. “And it’s also good to have people from the different countries of the region come together.”

Oct. 20, 2012 serves as the only time in the last six years MSU wasn’t hoisting Paul Bunyan after the annual rivalry game with Michigan, and it’s still something players haven’t forgotten about.

time. They made the field goal at the end and everybody on their sidelines is running around, jumping up and down in your face, the fans are going crazy.”

Despite holding U-M without a touchdown, the Wolverines were able to snap a four-game losing streak against MSU in 2012, winning 12-10. The game was a back and forth contest that saw MSU take a lead late in the fourth quarter, but a 38-yard field goal kick by U-M kicker Brendan Gibbons in the final seconds

of the game pushed the Wolverines past MSU. The loss to U-M came in the middle of a disappointing 7-6 season, and the loss to U-M dropped MSU to 4-4 on the season. MSU struggled to get anything going offensively that day with one of its biggest plays coming on a fake punt 26-yard run by senior punter Mike Sadler.

Head coach Mark Dantonio said on Tuesday that he remembered the game being played clean, and despite losing, he was proud of his team’s performance.

“As I remember, it was a great football game,” Dantonio said. “I was very proud of our football team in terms of how we represented ourselves and, you know, somebody is always going to win and somebody is going to lose.”

While Dantonio had some optimistic views about the depressing loss in 2012, players are looking back to the loss as extra motivation this week.

Senior defensive end Marcus Rush played in the 2012 loss to U-M and also remembers the

postgame reaction from the Wolverines. Rush said with all the preparation and emotion that goes into this rivalry matchup, coming up short in the end is tough to swallow.

“Just playing Michigan, the whole buildup, and then not accomplishing the goal that you have,” Rush said of the 2012 loss. “I mean, it’s never a good feeling, so that’s really how I felt.

You’re just kind of down, your heart is sunk in.”

Along with Rush, Saturday serves as the final time Jones and the rest of the seniors will take on their most hated rival. After already enduring one loss to U-M, Jones has felt both the joy and disappointment this rivalry can bring and wants to go out on top against the Wolverines.

“It’s just a bad feeling, a feeling you don’t want to feel as a football player or athlete in general when you’re playing your rival,” Jones said. “We always take that into account and just know how that felt and don’t want to experience that again.”

It was a weekend of ups and downs for MSU field hockey. On Friday, the Spartans shut out No. 18 Iowa in a 2-0 victory in one of their best complete performances of the year. However, coming back on Sunday against No. 11 Northwestern, MSU had no answer for the Wildcats’ offense and were defeated 5-2.

“Our game plan was team defense, and we’d been working on it all week in practice,” senior forward Abby Barker said of the Iowa game. “We executed the game plan throughout the whole game, so that definitely led to our success.”

Unable to carry the execution over to Sunday, Barker pointed to a slow start for the Spartans, something that has plagued a number of their games this year.

tle,” Barker said. “We didn’t play. We didn’t set the tone. We let them set the tone … but we hung in there. We ended up scoring two goals pretty quickly, so I think that shows we could’ve been in it from the start.

Even in MSU’s losses this year, there have usually been moments or stretches of solid play from the Spartans. Be it the season opener against Duke, the loss to Maryland at home, or Sunday’s loss against NU, MSU has showed enough in each game to know they have the ability to go toe-to-toe with great teams, according to assistant coach Molly Pelowski.

“I thought the girls came out in the second half and showed a lot of character coming back and fighting back,” Pelowski said.

Pelowski was called upon to be the interim head coach on Sunday and in practices this week with head coach Helen Knull gone until Friday. While Pelowski has been THURsday, Octob e r 2 3, 2 01 4

with MSU since 2008, she has enjoyed holding the reins for a brief stint, but also realizes how much Knull does for this program on a daily basis.

“It’s different,” Pelowski explained. “A lot more responsibility in things related to off the field. I have a greater appreciation for what Helen does every day. … It’s fun.

Despite the loss, I enjoyed coaching Sunday.”

Knull will be back on the sidelines for MSU on Friday in Ann Arbor, as rivalry week is in full effect. The return of Knull in a matchup against an in-state rival could provide enough fuel to fire up the Spartans. But with the Big Ten Tournament right around the corner, MSU knows they have to play their best regardless who the opponent is.

“It’s kind of a now or never,” senior back Alli Helwig. “Unfortunately, we allowed that to happen by not getting a couple of the wins that we needed to get.”

The volleyball team has enjoyed some success recently, but they aren’t letting it get to their heads.

“We’re very pleased we won two in a row,” head coach Cathy George said. “We have to continue to improve.”

MSU (12-7 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) is on a three-game win streak and has also won four of its last five games. During the streak, MSU has also not lost a set.

A reprieve from the upper echelon Big Ten competition is also partly responsible for the hot streak.

The Spartans were able to capitalize on a stretch over the past two weeks where they played the three worst teams in the conference: Iowa, Maryland and Rutgers.

The three teams are a combined 2-25 in Big Ten play.

There hasn’t been a secret formula during the win streak except for a heightened attention to detail, according to the team.

“We’re focusing a lot on managing rallies, just not giving points away,” senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster said. “That’s been a big focus for us over the last couple of weeks.”

Moster and her team have also done a good job of starting fast and finishing strong. In four out of the six sets MSU played over the weekend, they led from start to finish and didn’t allow Maryland or Rutgers to get any type of momentum.

“We’ve been really focusing on ourselves and what we can do to control the ball,” sophomore middle blocker and opposite hitter Allyssah Fitterer said. “That’s been working for us.”

The Spartans know the rest of the season will not be met with such ease and tougher challenges await them.

“The Big Ten kind of keeps you humble,” Moster said. “You’re going to play a great team no matter what … you know you have to bring your A game every single night regardless of who that other team is.”

MSU will need to bring its “A game” this weekend against No. 22 Ohio State (14-6 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) and reigning national champion, No. 10 Penn State (18-3 overall, 6-2 Big Ten).

“We’re excited for the challenge … we’re excited to go to their home courts and see what we can do,” Moster said.

History is on the Spartans’ side. Last year in late September, MSU played OSU and PSU in back-to-back road games and defeated them 3-2 and 3-0, respectively.

Within 10 minutes, manager of MSU Bikes Service Center Tim Potter can change the oil on a bike chain or put air in its tires.

During the course of the week, Potter has been offering his service to students for free in the residential neighborhoods in cooperation with Sustainability Week.

For the second year in a row, Potter set up stations to assist students passing by on their bikes.

The free minor maintenance clinics allow students to ride up and have Potter assess

“It’s a way to give back to communit y and introduce people to the concept of maintaining their bikes,” Potter said.

Similar to how a doctor can sense what is wrong with a patient, Potter said he can tell what services a bike may need when it rides by — whether it be oil to fix squeaky chains or a seat adjustment.

Potter called out to students riding by with low tires asking them if they had a moment to have their bike checked out.

Communication junior Elizabeth Vandenbil said she liked how the service center was offered in location easily accessible to her.

“It’s in a really convenient location I think with the halls ( Wonders and Case) over here,” Vandenbil said. “It’s nice and only takes a few minutes out of your day and it lengthens the life of your bike.”

Potter said it does not take long for him to provide the minor assistance.

“Minor things can turn to major things if the bike has been neglected,” Potter said.

In addition to helping students with the technical difficulties, Potter said he likes to offer his advice on biking and talk to students about where they ride.

“I try to make sure people are safe and help them with other issues while working on their bike,” Potter said.

While Potter filled chemical engineering freshman Mason Sitar’s tires with air, they discussed the advantage of biking to classes.

“I like riding my bike to class because it’s a lot quicker than walking,” Sitar said.
