We don’t need to remind you of the frenzy surrounding the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum.

It ’s prett y cool to have scenes from “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” shot on our campus. It’s been fun to debate whether or not the museum will be Lex Luthor’s house and to tweet about Ben Affleck hanging out with our football team.

When the film comes out, there will undeniably be a legion of Spartan fans looking forward to seeing even a small part of MSU on the big screen.

And that’s great.

But that doesn’t change the fact that students and faculty were inconvenienced these past few days with road closures, heavy traffic and strict security.

The traffic might be manageable, but anyone with classes in Berkey or Old Horticulture Halls had to jump through hoops to get to class. The Student Services building was also

caught in the fray.

While it’s understandable that people involved in the film might have privacy concerns, it’s not reasonable to expect students not to gather near the set, cell phones in hand, to take a peek. It’s one thing to direct students away from a restricted area, and another to be openly rude at passersby.

At the end of the day, those involved in “Batman v Superman” were guests at our school, not the other way around. It’s wrong to make it seem like students are intrusive, especially those who have already had to re-route their walk to class.

The level of security is too extreme. While something as high-profile as this movie could easily bring positive attention to MSU, we have to wonder how much manpower was actually needed to guard the set.

Growing up, I always thought college would be a non-stop party.

But now that I’ve actually gotten to college, I’ve noticed a trend — fewer people are looking for parties to go to and more and more people are just looking for a comfy bed and a Netflix account.

Although there’s nothing wrong with an occasional 7-hour marathon of your favorite shows, I think that there’s a problem when it becomes an average Friday night.

After struggling through high school with curfews and overprotective parents, is now really the time to be laying in bed every night like some kind of hermit? We’ve waited our entire lives to get to experience the freedom we have now, and I don’t want to waste it by clicking “next episode” for hours on end every weekend.

Now, don’t get me wrong. My computer is my most prized possession and Netflix is starting to become more of a necessity as opposed to a

luxury. But I think there is a time and a place for a classic “Gilmore Girls” binge session, and I’m not so sure that a Friday night at one of the most fun schools in the world is it.

But trust me, I get it. Sometimes we need a break from the excessive drinking and the nights that end at 3:30 a.m. On a cold and rainy Sunday, curling up with a fuzzy blanket and some hot chocolate in front of my computer sounds like the perfect way to avoid my responsibilities.

I think part of the problem with the idea behind “The Netflix Binge” is that it takes away from the social interaction of college. Yes, sometimes you just need to be alone with your thoughts or with “Bob’s Burgers” for hours on end, but it shouldn’t become a routine. Maybe invite some friends to watch with, and introduce each other to new shows or movies. There are ways to make a night of staying in a social experience instead of isolating yourself.

Of course, there are problems with going out every single weekend too. Drinking nights away and spending the next morning hunched over a toilet isn’t much fun either.

But what do I know? Just because someone’s idea of a fun night means taking shots of tequila and someone else’s is marathoning through “Game of Thrones” on HBO doesn’t mean that one is better than the other.

I think that the key is moderation. Don’t drink yourself into a coma, but don’t become an antisocial couch potato either.

Students to gather at Beaumont Tower at 3 p.m. tomorrow in protest of police brutality Students will gather at Beaumont Tower at 3 p.m. on Wednesday as part of a national day of protest against police brutality.

The protest was in part brought on by the killing of Michael Brown, a black teen from Ferguson, Mo., who was killed by a white police officer earlier this year.

Protests are also being held in Ferguson, Palestine and Hong Kong.

Lansing resident Crystal Gause, who organized the Facebook event and the protest, said she hopes to keep the momentum going in the

fight against police brutality.

“I don’t want to make it sound like this issue is just for people of color, because it’s a humanity issue,” Gause said. “But we want to show support to the citizens and students who are people of color and are fighting oppression, and stand with them.”

Gause is also working with jazz studies junior Duncan Tarr, a member of MSU Students United, and the MSU Black Student Alliance to organize the protest.

When it comes to trying to get out of a parking ticket, criminal justice senior and parking enforcement employee Joe Sears has seen it all.

From printing off impostor lot permits, to placing old parking tickets on the windshield of a car, to vehemently arguing with parking staff or police officers, Sears has dealt with irate customers throughout the nearly four years he has been with the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety’s parking services division.

Despite all this, Sears said he loves his job.

And his favorite part? Dealing with customers.

“I like the interactions with the customers,” Sears said. “It’s a very customer service–oriented job. We try to interact with people in a positive way, we try to help them, but we obviously have a service to provide to the people who are paying to park on campus. The faculty and staff or students with permits who pay to park, we have to make sure they have the ability to do so.”

“What this job comes down to is customer service,” Mazur said. “I know people laugh when we say that. ... If you’ve only gotten a parking ticket you might not see that customer service aspect of it.”

Although not many criminal justice students work in parking services, Sears said the experiences he has gained through the department are priceless.

“It’s a lot of interacting with a lot of officers and different things here at the department,” Sears said. “I definitely have a better understanding of this type of a department on a college campus, and I’m hoping I’ll work here as an officer in the future.”

Police swarm area after shot fired in argument Friday

East Lansing police responded to a shots fired call on Ann Street between late Friday night and early Saturday morning, taking four suspects into custody after the tense scene ended close to 1 a.m.

East Lansing police Lt. Steve Gonzales said police confirmed a round was fired in what police believe to be a heated argument.

The car the suspects were in was

stopped by police and the suspects were apprehended by police with guns drawn.

At least five police cars were parked behind the red Mercury sedan on Abbot Street. Additional police cars were blocking off the road from Burcham Drive to Oakhill Avenue and side streets were similarly inaccessible because of police.

Gonzales said the bullet hit a house but no one was injured. After responding to the call at 11:30 p.m., police located a vehicle with four potential suspects inside. The department is still working

Gonzales said no MSU students appear to be involved in the incident.

MSU students did witness the incident, however, and chemical engineering Aditya Voruganti was one of them. After exiting an apartment building, Voruganti said he turned the corner and saw officers with guns drawn at a car and took four people out in handcuffs. The whole ordeal lasted about 45 minutes and included a K-9 unit sweep of the area.

Four months into his term as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, John Baker is making impressions and making technology and renovations a priority.

Baker plans to renovate the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Large and Small Animal Clinic buildings, as well as mentor and instill new values into students and faculty.

The Board of Trustees appointed Baker to his position as dean of the college June 20.

“I think Mr. Baker can bring something, kind of a new face that can represent … new changes that he is willing to bring to the college and represent a good face for the college as a whole,” said Chad Britten, a senior veterinary medical student.

Britten said Baker brings a chance for change within the college. Specifically, Britten expects ren-

ovations and new technology, which are key components of Baker’s plan for the veterinary school.

Britten said changes are currently being made to the hospital, including a new emergency room and construction projects.

He said the college is “bringing a new look to the hospital and providing and updating our hospital (to show) the public that we are updating our hospital as far as bringing in new technology and showing that we are keeping our services up to date.”

Among the services that the college provides to students are hands-on opportunities in the animal hospital.

The large and small animal clinics also provide care for community members’ pets.

Biology junior Lucy Grogan said she has taken her horse to the large animal clinic in the past.

Undergraduate students will not get to have a direct say in ASMSU’s next president.

Although the ad-hoc election subcommittee headed by public policy senior Evan Schrage met to discuss the possibility of allowing any ASMSU tax-paying undergraduate student to vote on the president of the organization, a bill proposing just that was shot down during last week’s meeting of the policy committee.

Schrage noted that the ad-hoc election committee had lost the interest of members, as no one showed up to the most recent meeting, and moved forward with a bill to change the election process.

The bill was seconded by supply chain management sophomore Pranav Julakanti but met severe opposition from all other members of ASMSU. Vice President for Governmental Affairs KC Perlberg expressed concerns that changing the entire election process so quickly with one bill was “too severe.”

Schrage listed the goals behind a more direct election as “increasing voter turnout” and “opening the organization up to students.”

In the past, ASMSU general assembly college representative elections turnout rates peaked at 13 percent of tax paying students. However, last year’s election saw just 8 percent of students voting.

ASMSU members like social relations and policy junior Colin Wiebrecht fear that students “don’t take (ASMSU) seriously.”

Other trepidations to the bill included concerns about campaign spending and the vote turning into a “popularity contest.”

Members feared that a popularly elected president might be disconnected from the general assembly and student diversity groups that have important representation within ASMSU. Ultimately, Schrage’s bill proposing the changes to the election process was shot down and failed to pass on to the general assembly. When it comes time for the next ASMSU presidential election in the spring, only elected voting members of the general assembly will have a say in who is the best candidate for the job.

By Sunday morning, nearly all signs of filming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” had vanished.

The semi trucks that had lined East Circle Drive for the past week were gone. The barricaded road and closed-off sidewalks surrounding the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum were opened back up by MSU police on Saturday evening, and north campus looked normal again.

All that was left, besides a few fences, moving trucks and the faux-grass barriers along Grand Tuesday, Octobe r 2 1 , 2 01 4

Though it took just a week for most of the set building and filming to complete, speculation surrounding the possibility of the movie coming to East Lansing had been swirling since the early parts of the year.

Director Zack Snyder had stopped by campus in January for a private tour of the museum, and rumors started flying.

But then things had gone silent. Other than a casting call that had been released in September, nothing official was known about the movie’s ties to the Lansing area.

Anticipation grew as more and more structures had begun to pop up around the Broad Art Museum. Film trucks and production equipment had surrounded the set, and MSU spokesman Jason Cody had confirmed that the museum would be closed for the week of Oct. 13 “as part of a rental for a private function.”

Though university officials were tight-lipped, it was widely known what the “private function” was for.

Then finally, a source close to the production of the film confirmed ”Batman v Superman” was coming to East Lansing.

But along with attention, filming also brought lots of traffic for both cars and class-goers. It was common to hear students walking around the art museum’s barricaded perimeter, voicing complaints about the detours they had to take to avoid police and MSU event staff shooing away those who got close to the set.

“It added 10 minutes onto my walks to class,” said journalism senior Rachel Droze, who lives above Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Grand River Avenue. “They wouldn’t allow you on the sidewalk, and you got swarmed by cops if you set foot over there.”

“You can’t get from Bessey through Berkey,” said professional writing senior Simon Zagata. “So, I had to go all the way around, which is kind of inconvenient when you’re on a tight schedule.”

It didn’t add an overwhelming amount of time to Zagata’s commute, but he was one of the many who ran into long detours during the week of filming.

“I was a couple minutes late (to work), so nothing big,” he said. “It was just more of a stress thing than anything.”

But it seems that, at least for a little while, a majority of students were willing to put up with the inconveniences to welcome Hollywood to campus.

“For a week, I think it’s really cool,” said economics and environmental sustainability junior Max Lippitt. “If it lasted for a month, it would be kind of annoying. But for a week, it’s good.”

Uniting people can be a difficult task, especially if it’s uniting two rival schools such as MSU and the University of Michigan. The rivalry was not an issue on Saturday night when both schools’ Muslim Students’ Association, or MSA, came together for a dinner at the Union.

This year’s MSU MSA President Mohammed Rathur said he thought the event would be easy to facilitate this year because his sister is the president of the U-M chapter.

"I mean, from all the time I’ve been here and from what I’ve known in the past MSA events that I’ve been to in high school, there really wasn’t one that was a collaborative event, especially with the U-M MSA,” Rathur said.

U-M MSA President Saher Rathur said the event is a way to build a community that reaches outside of the association at U-M and for different groups to get together and interact.

“I think this event goes to show that unity is really needed among Muslim groups within this state,” said Saher Rathur.

The event’s backdrop was the Muslim feast, Eid al-Adha, which is one of the major holidays in Islam.

“The whole basis of this holiday is for the history of our prophet Ibrahim who was going to sacrifice his son Ismail,” Mohammed Rathur said.

He said God sent Ibrahim, or Abraham, a sheep to sacrifice instead of Ismail, or Ishmael, disclaiming that it

was only a test of Abraham’s faith. To commemorate this event, Muslims sacrifice sheep and goat for Eid and distribute the meat to the poor.

This year, Muslims began observing the holiday on Oct. 4 and continued until the evening of Oct. 5.

Rathur said since the event is family oriented, they couldn’t hold it during the actual Eid weekend and also wanted to wait after most students were done with midterms.

Business junior Hauwa Abbas said during Eid, Muslims usually celebrate the end of an event. In this case, the celebration was for the end of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

Abbas said for her, this event made Eid more festive because it was bringing together Muslims from different places.

“Having somebody come all the way out from a different city … shows how amazing this event is and the union that we have because of that event,” Abbas said.

Addressing this union between Muslims was Michigan Muslim Community Council Dawood Zwink, the event speaker.

He said having a brother and sister be presidents of the association in different universities gave way to an event that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

Zwink said as part of the Michigan Muslim Community Council, he wants to make sure to plan more events of this nature, those that extend beyond competitive sports and challenge students in more ways in order to bring Muslims across Michigan closer together.

After a few years of impromptu gigs and experimenting in the local band scene with no clear vision for the future, Lansing-based band Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers are launching an album and a tour under their new record deal.

“In the very beginning, there weren’t any expectations and it was just a super fun time,” vocalist and guitarist Joe Hertler said. “Getting a record deal never really crossed our minds but the opportunity just kind of came along to work with something bigger.”

Before becoming the Rainbow Seekers, MSU alumni Kevin Pritchard and Rick Hale were in a different band when they met Hertler for the first time during a collaboration project.

The three musicians ended up crossing paths in 2010 at the Mitten Fest in Ypsilanti, where they spontaneously decided to collaborate again, this time including guitar player Ryan Hoger. After acquiring a manager and adding three more members, including MSU alumnus Aaron Stinson, Hertler said the band started to take their music more seriously.

“At that point, I think we all felt creatively fulfilled in the roles that we had,” he said.

“We love the communal aspect of music and I think all of us really see music as being the way we most effectively communicate.”

The band’s Facebook page refers to their sound as “psychedelic post-motown pop with a side of funk, folk and R&B.” Alumnus Pritchard said this diverse description is clear in their new album called “Terra Incognita,” which is expected to be released in November.

“We’re essentially a combination of all the quality music that has come out of Michigan, blended into one genre that I don’t know how to explain,” he said.

With their new support from Bad Mascot Records, a division of Universal Music Group, Pritchard said the correct definition for their new opportunity is a “distribution deal” because they have more flexibility, creative control and ownership over their music than a typical record deal would allow.

“We get to be part of the professional network, which is really going to help us out,” Pritchard said. “We can tour cities that we have never played before with some credibility, and our record will get pushed through these channels that we didn’t have access to before.”

Once the album is officially released, the band plans on making music their primary focus as they set out on their first national tour beginning in February.

“We’re right at that edge of being able to jump off and hopefully support ourselves,” Hertler said. “Ultimately, we want to do what we love, make art and try to be as honest with it as we can. You know, you just cross your fingers as tight as you can and hope it works out.”

With the season slowly drawing to a close, the men’s soccer team (9-2-2 overall, 3-1-1 Big Ten) has picked the right time to get its offense going.

The MSU offense is finally playing at the same level as the defense that grabs most of the headlines for the Spartans.

The defense has led the Spartans to 10 shutouts in 13 total games, and the offense, which got off to a slow start this season, has scored 11 goals in its last five games, compared to only seven through the team’s first eight games. MSU has gone 4-10 in this five game stretch of increased offensive production.

A large part of the team’s recent offensive success can be attributed to increased chemistry amongst the team’s starters — a result of the team’s ability to finally get healthy. Junior midfielder Jay Chapman spent a few games at the beginning of the season hurt, and senior forward Adam Montague along with senior forward and midfielder Tim Kreutz both spent time out with injuries as well.

“Well, I think we’re healthy, so all these offensive players are playing four or five games together (in a row),” head coach Damon Rensing said. “With that I think guys are becoming more relaxed, there’s not as much pressure to score a goal because they feel like there are several guys who can do it now.”

The team has also been powered recently by the strong play of junior midfielder Jason Stacy. Stacy, the team’s current leader in total points with 14, finished the week with seven points.

Last Wednesday, Stacy scored five points, including an amazing goal which made the SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the night, coming in at No. 4. Stacy added another goal to his weekly total on Saturday.

The strong week by Stacy earned him Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week along with being named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week. "(The honor is) not just a credit to me, it’s a credit to my teammates and coaches,” Stacy said.

“Without them, obviously I can’t do what I do, I was lucky enough to be put in the position where I’m able to execute.”

Two games against struggling opponents afforded the volleyball team time to give some of its younger players minutes over the weekend.

“We had a lot players get out there,” head coach Cathy George said. “I thought it was great to see … what they were able to do.”

MSU (12-7 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) defeated Maryland (7-12 overall, 0-8 Big Ten), on Friday night and Rutgers (7-14 overall, 0-8 Big Ten), Saturday night in straight sets on the road.

“I think Maryland came charging at us a little bit,” George said. “It was important that we got some stops and we were able to put some points on the board at the end.”

It was the 10th straight loss for the Terrapins, who have not won a set since Oct. 5 against Purdue.

“With Rutgers we did some really nice things, but we also needed to be a little more high percentage across the board,” George said regarding her team’s 3-0 win. “We got to make sure that we’re taking good shots.”

The win marked the third straight sweep for MSU, who currently sits in seventh place in the Big Ten standings.

The Spartans used a total of 14 different players during the weekend’s games, including freshman outside hitter Holly Toliver, who has been working herself back from injury.

“We’re trying to work Holly back in slowly but surely as she regains her strength and her stamina.” George said. “She ran up a couple points at the serving line and was able to get herself … back into the groove.”

Toliver played in a combined three sets over the

weekend, totaling five kills and two digs.

“We look for her to continue to increase that strength and stamina over the course of the next couple of weeks,” George said.

Freshman defensive specialist Marissa Ratzenberger made her collegiate debut against Rutgers on Saturday night and contributed immediately.

Ratzenberger had four digs and a service ace while also serving on four straight MSU points.

Sophomore middle blocker Autumn Christenson and freshman middle blocker Megan Tompkins, who usually sit behind middle blockers freshman Alyssa Garvelink and senior Jazmine White, also got in on the action Saturday.

Christenson and Tompkins combined for eight kills against Rutgers, one of which — by Tompkins — won the second set for MSU. “We want to improve our depth across the board as we go into the tail end of the conference season,” George said.

Credit Card Fraud An 18-year-old female student became the victim of credit card fraud when she left her card on the desk in her room in Case Hall, and returned to find it missing. The fraud, which occurred on Oct. 14, implicated three suspects, at least two of which are also students. Police do not have an estimate as to how much was charged to the card before it was returned to the victim.

Stalking A 21-year-old female student reported being stalked by a 23-year-old male student since

April of this year. The two used to date, but after calling it off, he refused to leave the victim alone.

The suspect denied any stalking accusations and the incident is still under investigation and will be turned over to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Phone Harassment A 18-year-old female student living in Hubbard Hall reported being threatened via text message by an unknown suspect on Oct. 10.

When police called the number, it appeared to be disconnected.

A second instance of phone harassment was experienced by a 47-year-old MSU employee who reported receiving calls from a recently terminated employee.

The harassment reportedly began in March.

Criminal Sexual Conduct A 17-year-old female student living in Hubbard Hall told police she was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance after a night of drinking on Oct. 13.

After reportedly having a few drinks at a nearby residence hall, the group of four returned to Hubbard Hall, where two of the friends left momentarily.

Within the short amount of time, the victim and the suspect, an 18-yearold male student, were alone, the alleged sexual assault occurred.

Police interviewed all witnesses and the suspect at the time of the reported assault.

The suspect denied any wrongdoing.

The incident is still under investigation.

Four takeaways from MSU football’s 56-17 road victory over Indiana on Saturday

No. 8 MSU flaunted its muscles on Saturday, reeling off 42 unanswered points to beat Indiana, 56-17, at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. MSU now turns its focus to Michigan this week, as the Wolverines travel to Spartan Stadium on Saturday. Before looking ahead to U-M, here are four takeaways from this past weekend.

The solid performance has temporarily quieted naysayers outside the program and eliminates some doubt in MSU’s second half troubles.

Closing out Indiana After back-to-back weeks of nearly blowing a substantial lead, MSU took care of business in the second half against Indiana.

MSU was able to reel off 42 consecutive points and used a stifling defensive effort in the second half to hold Indiana scoreless. Head coach Mark Dantonio said closing out opponents was something the team talked about this week and that he was pleased with the Spartans’ finish on Saturday.

Nick Hill emerging as weapon It was not senior Jeremy Langford who led the Spartans in rushing on Saturday, but another senior running back in Nick Hill, who racked up the most yards on the ground for MSU. Hill ran for 178 yards on 16 carries, including a 76-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Following the game, Hill said he was smiling as he hit the endzone on that late touchdown run because it finally sunk in that he had achieved his first 100-yard game as a Spartan.

“When I broke free I kind of had a semi-smile on my face as I (hit) the open field,” Hill said. “I had to make sure no one was around me but as I hit the endzone, I could feel a huge relief off my shoulders.”

downs on the season. The senior running back is developing into a productive second option in the backfield for MSU, which is something every team can use.

Pressure on QB key A lot of Saturday’s success against Indiana can be pointed to the defense, especially the front seven. MSU’s defense recorded four sacks against the Hoosiers and constantly put pressure on the freshman quarterback Zander Diamont.

The constant pressure out of MSU’s front seven resulted in only 11 passing yards against and stands as an area the Spartans will surely key in on this week.

Michigan ranks tied for 82nd in the nation in sacks against, averaging more than two sacks per game. MSU recorded seven sacks last year against U-M, and now against an even worse offensive line, expect defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi to dial up the heat on Saturday.

Rivalry week on banks of red cedar It’s finally here, the week that all college football fans in the state of Michigan look forward to every year. Well...maybe not so much for U-M fans and alumni as of late.

MSU and U-M will renew their annual rivalry this Saturday — kickoff at 3:30 p.m. — at Spartan Stadium with the Spartans looking to continue their recent success against the Wolverines. MSU has won five of the last six meetings and enters the week favored by as many as 17 points against U-M. U-M hasn’t scored a touchdown against MSU since Oct. 15, 2011, and will have its work cut out again this season. Regardless of the record, this game is a special one to everyone in the Spartan locker room from top to bottom.

“It’s always a great week,” Dantonio said after MSU’s victory over Indiana. “It’s a great week for college football, it’s a great week for our program and we’ve always embraced it.”
