On-campus smoking ban met with mixed reception, muddled clarity

Hopefully, next year’s incoming freshmen weren’t the type in high school to sneak off during lunch to smoke cigarettes in the woods. They might be in for a shock when reported to the Department of Student Life’s Conflict Resolution Services for lighting up, or even vaping, anywhere on campus.

Though MSU’s move to ban smoking on campus over the summer, to be implemented at the start of 2016’s fall semester, falls in line with a gradual trend at other major universities, doubts still remain on the data used to justify the ban, as well as how it will be enforced.

THE BAN On June 17, the MSU Board of Trustees decided after a short discussion to ban tobacco products and e-cigarettes on campus, effective next year.

“To ‘smoke’ means inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying any lighted or heated tobacco or plant product intended for inhalation, whether natural or synthetic,” the policy reads. “To ‘smoke’ also includes the use with any such tobacco or plant product of a pipe or hookah; of any electronic smoking device which creates, in any manner, an aerosol or vapor, in any form; or of any other oral smoking device.”

as well.

The next step for MSU administrators is figuring out how the policy will be implemented, along with educational programs throughout the next year.

“What’s going on now is the task force, all the different subcommittees are meeting as we start to look through different ways we can continue to roll out an educational campaign on all of this,” MSU spokesperson Jason Cody said.

By the start of the spring semester, those on campus will start to see the beginning phases of the policy rolled out in preparation for the final ban on Aug. 15, 2016, including an updated website with more information. MSU will also remove the

cement ashtrays throughout campus, Cody said, though a cost estimate is not yet available.

ENFORCEMENT Though a common misconception on campus sees the new policy being enforced by police officers, the reality is far less dramatic. MSU police, though responsible for enforcing all university ordinances, will not necessarily be aggressively enforcing it beyond informing an offending individual to put the cigarette out.

For example, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said, people who smoke in Spartan Stadium are asked to stop, but could be kicked out if they refuse.

“This policy isn’t being implemented with enforcement being the top priority,” Cody told The State News in June. “This is more of, kind of an educational transition.”

If need be, an offending student can be referred to the Department of Student Life’s Conflict Resolution Services for further review. Cody said he doubted whether an offending

Other smokefree schools like the University of Michigan, are more integrated into the surrounding city, making it much easier for smokers to leave campus for a smoke break.

Others see it as an image boost for the university, without any real effort to enforce it.

“They barely enforce the 25-foot policy,” philosophy senior Dilyn Corner said. “I’ve had one person talk to me in the last four years. If they didn’t want us to smoke within 25 feet of the building why would they put all the cigarette (ashtrays) right next to the doors?”

Fisheries and wildlife sophomore Natalie Spratt said she could understand the current 25-foot policy for people living on the lower floors of a residence hall so smoke wouldn’t travel into a room, however living on the second floor she hasn’t ever had an issue.

She also said she would advocate for designated smoking areas, especially for people living on campus.

“You can’t just ban it on the entire campus, people aren’t just going to not smoke,” Spratt said.

“I’m going to be living in a dorm at least for spring of next year, like I’ll stop smoking around buildings, with people having classes, but I’m not going to stop smoking around my dorm because I live there and I’ve decided to smoke.”

A new church has been built for MSU students, called Element Church, and is located in Kellogg Center auditorium.

“I wanted to have a new life giving church in the city that can reach people,” lead and founding pastor Scott Hayes said.

“We just want to see lives changed through the connection with Jesus.”

For a large percentage of the student body, there is no way to get to church. Many churches in East Lansing are off-campus and not within walking distance — the location of Element Church was strategically chosen to accommodate those who do not have access to a car.

“I love that it is on campus now,” packaging sophomore Becca Uebele said. “It is so accessible to bring friends and invite people, and you get to

sleep in a little bit longer.”

Hayes and the other leaders of the church said they are friends and fans of the churches in the city and admire what they are doing. However, they believe that new churches reach new people.

“Reaching new people requires new methods,” Hayes said. “We thought that we needed to be a church that was using new methods to reach new groups of people.”

Richard Shaull, the executive pastor of Element Church, said he is all about seeing people’s lives change.

“I think we live in a time and culture where there are so many things demanding our attention so much so that there are a lot of great churches in our city,” Shaull said. “But to reach the next generation we need to communicate the message in different ways and use different methods.”

Shaull said he believes

the number of students within their church home is growing daily. He said he has been impressed with the response Element Church has gotten from the student body.

“The main thing I love about Element Church is that they are available and want to get you involved,” Uebele said.

“Their main mission is to show God’s love to people in East Lansing.

They exemplify that pretty well.”

Students who do attend say they love the atmosphere of the church.

“I love how they love God and love people,” education sophomore Caitlyn Buell said. “I love the people there and how they represent Christ.”

Two years ago, MSU’s Residence Education and Housing Services began to offer laundry services in the dorms as a part of students’ room and board packages. This year, they have made some changes to the services hoping to make it even easier.

The largest change the REHS has made to the laundry services this year is the disabling of card readers located in laundry rooms.

In years past, students would have to swipe their ID cards to prove their dorm residency in order to use the washers and dryers. However, this year REHS decided to disable card the readers in the residence halls in order to keep costs down, Kat Cooper, director of communications of REHS said.

Disabling card readers though raises the issue of off-campus students and even non MSU students coming into the dorms to utilize the laundry rooms.

“We do have some concerns about off-campus residents using the rooms at the expense of our on-campus residents as some some laundry rooms are accessible to the public,” Cooper said. “We have the ability to check in on the rooms to ensure they are being used properly by on-campus residents.”

Cooper said MSU began offering free laundry services in order to help MSU students, and it has been sustained based on upgrades they have made to their laundry facilities, and the adjustments in other

areas of their budget they made to absorb the cost.

“We have worked directly with our vendor to upgrade all of the washers and dryers to be energy efficient and reduce our water consumption per load.” Cooper said.

“Which reduces costs and enhances our efforts to be Spartan green.”

Athletic training sophomore Kristina Lewis, said she has noticed a bit of a dropoff in the cleanliness of the laundry rooms this year compared to years past.

“Last year, it was definitely a lot cleaner. There was always a cleaning lady downstairs making sure the laundry room was well-kept but, this year, there are always clothes laying around,” Lewis said.

Cooper said REHS’s staff and facility team works very hard to maintain a clean and accessible laundry room for students.

“Our REHS facility team cleans the laundry rooms every day, seven days per week,” Cooper said. “Additionally, our teams have increased the rounds during the afternoon

and evening of the laundry rooms to maintain the cleanliness of rooms.”

Mechanical engineering sophomore Kimberly Boyne, also said she has noticed the laundry rooms have not been exceptionally well maintained thus far this year.

“If you accidently drop something on the ground that is already clean, it’s annoying because of how dirty the laundry rooms are,” said Boyne.

Cooper added the REHS facility team cannot tend to the room nonstop, so they have asked resident assistants to encourage residents to clean up after themselves in order to keep the facilities in order.

This can lead to a longer wait time for some, as less operational machines are available.

“One dryer has been out of order in North Case for three weeks and it makes me frustrated because it is taking up my time waiting for an open dryer,” Racine said.

Cooper said they have been working to make sure all of the washers and driers in the dorms are functioning, but with increasing number of students, leading to increased usage, problems such as broken or overused driers can arise.

“This past summer we worked directly with our vendor to replace dryers in many of our residence halls,” Cooper said. “This fall, we have also noticed an increase in the usage of washers and dryers compared to last fall.”

The amount of things that an academic advisor can assist you with are endless. Jessica Mestre, an academic advisor for the Communications Department, said academic advisors can build balanced schedules, track progress in requirements, offer ideas for complementing a major with a minor or an additional major and learn about campus offerings.

However, not all students are aware of the services academic advisors have to offer for them. Below, we have compiled a list of things students can go to their academic advisors for help with.

The 2016 presidential race is starting to heat up as next fall’s election gets closer. Most of the candidates running have well funded media campaigns, but in order to better inform the student body on campus, the MSU College Democrats, among other student groups, have taken the initiative to involve students in politics.

The MSU College Democrats are one of many youth branches of the democratic party under the Michigan Federation of Democrats, the official college outreach arm for the Michigan Democratic party.

Alex Noffsinger, MSU College Democrats party relations director, said he believes the overall mission for the MSU College Democrats is to promote the democratic party’s egalitarian principles and values to educate people about not only the party itself, but civic engagement as well.

With events such as fundraisers, voter registration and collaborations with other student groups such as Spartans for Hillary and MSU Students for Bernie Sanders, the MSU College Democrats are working towards informing and getting the campus community active in the 2016 presidential race.

According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, about 12.3 million people under the age of 30 voted democrat in the 2012 election which helped President Obama win electoral votes in several different states.

Although the MSU College Democrats are swayed toward the left,­they are not claiming their support for a certain candidate until after the democratic presidential primary.

Eggerding said only half of people aged 19-­29 actually voted in the last election but 67 percent of youth participants voted democrat versus the 30 percent republicans earned.

“They’re (student branches) important to the parties because it gets youth involved,” MSU College Democrats treasurer Brianna Carmona said. “Candidates have us to speak for them, to volunteer for them, etc. It’s also good for the party because we are the youth, which is a very important group of voters.”

Interested students can go to the MSU College Democrats’ bi-weely meetings on Monday at 8:30 p.m. in 335A Case Hall to join the organization or learn more information on the slew of democratic candidates and the party itself.

NAVIGATORS Mestre said academic advisors help students find their optimal route to achieve their academic goals. This might include helping a student schedule their classes to ensure they stay on track to graduate when they want without taking any unnecessary classes. In addition, advisors can help students make sure they find the right major or program for them.

“We help students choose the most effective route, identify interests, accommodate for detours, recover from roadblocks and ensure they are taking all necessary steps to reach the destination,” Mestre said.

INTERNSHIP ASSISTANCE Academic advisors can explain various ways to students in which they can earn credits towards graduation through an internship experience.

Advisors can explain and help students through the application process, assist them in how to find internship opportunities, and even find places for students to go to get assistance with their resumes.

CONNECTIONS Advisors are able to help students “draw connections between learning inside and outside the classroom as well as connecting students with resources and people,” Mestre said.

In addition, advisors are able to connect students with other faculty members and offices across campus for assistance in anything they may need — since students might not know every resource MSU offers.

ONLINE RESOURCES Advisors are able to inform students of various online tools at students’ disposal. Everything from help with schedule builder to finding counseling resources or tutoring options for a wide variety of classes online and any other online resources a student might need.

UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY DIVISION This service provides academic advising primarily for freshman and sophomores and it is the primary advising unit for undecided students, according to the Advising website.

These neighborhood advisors can assist students with “making sure the classes a student may be taking are in line with the student’s major,” Pauline Tobias, UUD Lead Academic Advisor, said.

Crew to host only home meet of year

This weekend at Grand River Park in Lansing, the MSU Women’s Crew Team and MSU Men’s Crew Club will host their annual Head of the 10

Grand Regatta, the only home rowing competition of the fall season besides two upcoming novice competitions.

On Oct. 10, the Women’s Crew Team will host a high school competition between area schools. The next day, the

Kunzi’s physical presence isn’t the only thing that has his friends singing his praises. Victoria Curtis is a criminal justice junior and a cadet captain for the AFROTC. Kunzi and Curtis joined the AFROTC together freshman year, and have become good friends.

“He is probably my closest friend in (Air Force) ROTC,” Curtis said. “I think he definitely pushes everyone to do their best, and he pushes himself as well.”

Taylor was also vocal about Kunzi’s friendship and his willingness to help others.

“Grant is a real nice guy. He’s the first one to help you out if you have a question about some

schoolwork or anything,” Taylor said. “He’s also probably one of the more dedicated guys I know in terms of classwork.“ Kunzi may not be able to make every water polo practice, but he is there for every game, and is a key contributor to the team.

Kunzi said he has been playing water polo since eighth grade, and it developed into a sport he is extremely passionate about.

Even though it did take him a while to find that niche, Kunzi has found a group of guys and teammates which share his interests, and it has led to some great friendships and competition.

“Graduating high school, it wasn’t a question as to whether

or not I was going to play water polo,” Kunzi said. “It was set in stone I was going to play water polo.”

When Kunzi joined the MSU club water polo team his freshman year, nerves may have been a factor, but he adjusted to his new team smoothly.

“We practice so much together, and for such an open group, it didn’t take long to get acclimated and figure out how things go around,” Kunzi said. “It’s just a blast. We have so much fun together.”

Men’s Crew Club will host a collegiate competition featuring more than 85 boats, club adviser James Perkins said in an email.

For the first time, the regatta will take place for two days this year. Previously, the high school and college events were both held on a single Sunday.

Perkins said the high school races have been moved to Saturday this year because of the increasing size of the event.

The name “Head of the Grand” refers to the Grand River, where the event will be held.

Many of the top collegiate rowing teams host regattas at local rivers. Perkins said the largest of these is the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, where the MSU Crew Club will compete later this season.

The regatta will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. At

approximately 1:30 p.m. each day, a medal ceremony will be held. The team with the highest point total on Sunday will be awarded the Head of the Grand trophy. All medals and trophies used for the competition are made locally.

Races will run on a west to east course roughly from the Waverly Road bridge to the bridge on Martin Luther King Blvd. Spectators who would like to view the contest can

DANTONIO UPSET RUTGERS Before Dantonio became the head coach at MSU, he was the head coach at Cincinnati. He played Rutgers twice during his three seasons there.

Dantonio went 1-1 against the Scarlet Knights but his win came

in the form of a 30-11 upset over a No. 7-ranked Rutgers team in 2006.

SPARTANS TRAVEL WELL MSU is 23-9 on the road in Big Ten games under Dantonio and 17-3 since 2010.

Students find their voice in a cappella group

For chemical engineering sophomore Brandon Bilinski, being a member of an a cappella group seems like an unusual activity.

But it just reinforces how anyone can join a co-ed a cappella group like State of Fifths.

Bilinski said he joined the Fifths the second semester of his freshman year. He said he decided to audition because he wanted to have more music in his life.

“I did a lot of music in high school and then coming here I wasn’t doing music,” Bilinski said. “I felt a little off-kilter, and then finally found something that could be my musical outlet.”

Marketing junior Joseph Wylie said he joined the group the first week of his freshman year.

“I went on YouTube and kind of saw some videos of the Fifths and thought that was the group for me,” Wylie said. “I was lucky enough to make it.”

Wylie said the group sings

modern and indie songs. He said the group looks for songs which amplifies the group’s sound, such as songs by The Head and the Heart.

Bilinksi said when looking for songs to perform, they try to be ahead of the curve and pick unique songs.

“Our goal as a group is to sing the songs you’re going to hear months later,” Bilinksi said.

In addition to performing around campus, the group tours around Traverse City for four days every winter and competes in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, or ICCA. The group has placed second at the Great Lakes Region semifinals for the past two years.

“This might be our year, though — third time’s the charm,” Wylie said. “It’s amazing that we’ve even gotten to semifinals. I think it’s a huge accomplishment.”

senior Meg Seifferly said she thinks their accomplishments are not the only thing that makes them special. She credits their fearlessness.

“The first thing that comes to my mind is that we don’t have a fear of taking risk,” Seifferly said.

“A lot of a capella groups now are into the stereotypical, Pitch Perfect style. State of Fifths tends to do riskier, darker music and that made us stand out at (ICCA) semifinals last year.”

Wylie and Bilinski said there is a lot to look forward to this year. In addition to recording a new CD, they said they look forward to new voices and people.

“We’re a really friendly group of people — that’s what I saw when I came to Michigan State,” Wylie said. “We’re really like a family, honestly.”

Bilinski said the thing he looks forward to most is the group’s potential.

“We grew so much last year, I’m excited to see how much more we can grow,” Bilinski said.
