Breakfast ‘should be extended,’ students say

With the scramble of early morning routines, some students are frustrated by how early breakfast foods are taken off the shelves in dining halls.

“Statistically, breakfast is shown as the most important meal of the day because it makes the brain strong and ready to be active during the day,” marketing sophomore Christopher Raxton said.

“If you don’t eat breakfast you will less likely be productive and ready to learn.”

Most dining halls end breakfast at 10 a.m. according to the Eat at State website.

“That is just terrible,” Raxton said. “It’s an inconvenience. I think breakfast should be extended to at least 12 p.m. or 1 p.m.”

Raxton is only one of many dissatisfied students.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” broadcast journalism sophomore Roxie Elliot, said. “When I get up I don’t have time to sit down for breakfast. My earliest class is at 10:20 a.m. so if I wanted to comeback for breakfast I can’t.”

In certain cases, students forsake breakfast because they do not want to be late to class.

“One time I had to leave the line and couldn’t get breakfast because I had class,” biochemistry

sophomore Kelly Feger said.

Missing breakfast can negatively affect students’ health as well.

“Now I’m still hungry because I haven’t eaten and I have to go to another class,” Elliot said. “I always have a headache when I don’t eat breakfast, but whenever I go to the café breakfast is over.”

Raxton said he wished more convenient options were available.

“Most times you have to sit down and eat, I want to grab food and go,” he said.

Even on the weekends students are not able to wake up before the waffles, sausages and other breakfast foods are put away.

“Fridays and Saturdays people stay out late and have fun with friends,” Raxton said. “They tend not to get up as early.”

Akers hall is the only cafeteria that serves breakfast until 2 p.m. everyday of the week.

“I feel that it’s unfair because people over there get to eat more breakfast for longer, while we get to eat pizza,” electrical engineering Jeremiah Grant sophomore said.

Living in Brody neighborhood, Grant said he eats breakfast once a week.

“Sometimes I’m more tired in classes and go throughout the day hungry,” said Grant. “Breakfast ends too quickly.”

completely different position,” Bennett said.

Bennett, who hails from the northern metro Dallas area, said youth soccer has a large presence in Texas. However, there are few Division 1 men’s soccer teams in the state, and Bennett knew he would have to look elsewhere to continue playing soccer in college.

He knew he wanted to play in a competitive conference for a competitive school. After taking his first visit to MSU, it was love at first sight.

“When I came up here I really loved the whole program, the coaching staff, and even before that,” Bennett said. “And before I even came up here, I knew I wanted to play in a competitive conference and obviously knowing that the Big Ten, Michigan State was a good school, a good soccer conference, they made my decision pretty easy when they started recruiting me.”

Bennett’s athletic ability immediately stood out to Rensing, but it was the quieter aspects of his game that sealed the deal from a recruiting standpoint.

“He wasn’t arrogant or cocky, but I could tell he believed in what he was doing and was confident in what he did,” Rensing said. “He had good temperament, never got too rattled after a mistake, never got too fired up after a big play. I thought he had a really good even keel, and I think it’s really good for my goalies to have that. Because you’re the last line of defense and if you can have that calming presence for the players in front of you, that’s huge.”

Bennett has continued to develop his mental understanding of the game, and Rensing said he has improve leaps and bounds in that respect.

“To really become an elite goalkeeper, you have to understand the nuances of the soccer,” Rensing said. “When he first started playing goal, I thought he was a little behind. ... He’s becoming a better reader of the game and a communicator.”

Records at MSU Winningest goalkeeper in MSU history All-time shutout record

ONE OF THE BEST Rensing won’t name who he thinks the best goalkeeper to ever play at MSU is, but Bennett is certainly in the discussion.

On Sept. 4, Bennett became the winningest goalkeeper of all time at MSU with a 4-0 shutout over Niagara. Prior to the start of the season, he was No. 6 all-time on the career saves list, No. 3 on the save percentage list, and is on top of the career shutout list.

With most of his senior year in front of him, Bennett is far from finished.

“It’s really exciting to watch because Zach, you know, has put the work into it,” Rensing said. “He’s similar to Fatai (Alashe). In order to do well, you have to have talent. You also have to be willing to put the time in, not just during the season, but after practice, over the summer.”

Bennett’s experience at the net has helped put the Spartans in a position to succeed. He admits maintaining his trademark focus for 90 minutes each game is a challenge, but he understands if he lets his mind drift for even a couple seconds during a game, it could swing the course of the season.

“It’s honestly just experience, playing so many games for Michigan State and even before that, of learning that no matter what, no matter how little action you’ve got all game, no matter how little time you have left in the game, no matter when you’re about to get to or whatever title you’re about to get to, you have to focus get that and think about the play that’s ahead of you,” Bennett said.

Students battle balancing work and classes of managers around that are not willing to work with the kids.�

Angela Terranova, a social work junior, said she feels obligated to work. “Having a relaxed job helps,� she said. “I can do homework while I’m at work. It does conflict with certain clubs that I want to join.

But, otherwise, I don’t feel stressed. I feel like I have to work going here.�

Claire Nordentoft, a no preference freshman, said she prefers not having a job. “I personally don’t have one (a job), especially since I’m a freshman, it would take up too much time between activities and schoolwork,� Nordentoft said. “It’s a great way to have spending money, but overall I think I would rather get school work done over a job.�

Kenzie O’Brien, a business freshman, said she does have plans to get a job in the future. “I think it’s a great way for them to make money and be able to support themselves throughout college,� O’Brien said. “But, for me, as a freshman, I am trying to settle and get used to school and get into a routine before I get a job.�

Josh Milem, a physics junior, said feels that work can get in the way. “It’s not really distracting, per say,� Milem said. “It messes with due dates a lot though. You really have to plan your time strategically.�

With tuition on the rise, many students are forced to find a job while in college, but balancing school work with a job is not always an easy task.

According to The Impact of Student Employment, an Inside Higher Ed article, “As tuitions have risen and more and more undergraduates are enrolling later in life, nearly half of all full-time students and 80 percent of part time students work.�

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, is currently under construction on campus and will compliment an already juggernaut physics program at MSU. The graduate nuclear physics program at MSU is ranked first in the nation by U.S. News World and Report and is being recognized by more than those in the scientific community.

tion site of the FRIB this week as a part of his campaign to ensure that Congress continues to fund long term scientific research.

So far, the $730 million project is being completely funded

by The Department of Energy Office of Science, Michigan State University, and the State of Michigan.

Peters is a leading member of the Space and Science Senate committee and said he sees MSU’s FRIB facility as pivotal for long term research.

The facility is estimated to be completed in 2022, but it

studies,� Sanchez said. “The only free time that I have is usually spent studying. So, in my opinion, it is distracting to have a job while in college.�

Allie Gehle, a zoology sophomore, said she knows the struggle of working while attending college. “When I am not attending classes, I work as a stay at home mom,� she said. “When I am done with my job, I still have my job — I still have homework to do. I have to do my homework and care for my daughter at the same time.�

Meghan Scullion, general manager of Pita Pit, shared her thoughts on college students working while being focused on their studies. “If you have a good manager who works with you, and if you can find a good balance of the two (working and classes), it will help you multi-task in the long run,� Scullion said. “There are a lot

During Peters’ tour this week, Chris Thronson, Deputy Director of Conventional Facilities, explained how the facility works in layman’s terms.

The site will be 35 feet below ground and will showcase miles of complex wiring and piping for the experiments, he said.

Thronson explained a lin-

ear accelerator launches particles at a wall, the particle explodes, and MSU scientists study the remnants for rare isotopes.

Thronson said these rare isotopes, Carbon-12 being a common one, only last for a few minutes, so scientists must record quickly.

These studies at FRIB are catalysts for practical, societal benefits as well.

Community Volunteers for International Programs (CVIP) has various programs to offer for international students, but one of their programs could be cut due to the closing of Spartan Village.

The CVIP developed their Lending Center in 1961, which is a place for MSU’s international students and scholars to go to borrow household items so they do not have to buy them.

According to Stacey Bieler, CVIP’s president for the last two years, the Lending Center started out with lending coats to those that did not have them. As the years went on, the Lending Center transformed into a center that helps MSU’s international students.

“MSU has the VIPP (Visiting International Professional Program) which is scholars coming from, generally, China and Korea and the thought of them having to buy everything to only stay here for a year is the purpose of the Lending Center,” Bieler said.

According to the CVIP’s website, the Lending Center lends food preparation items, table linens, bedroom linens, bath linens, tableware, cookware and miscellaneous items such as lamps.

“We get a lot of donations but, our supply is down right now,” Lending Center volunteer Ericka Larson said. “It has been a great service to the students and they appreciate it so much.”

International students view the Lending Center as a valuable resource for them, here at MSU. “It is very good, especially for first year students,” graduate student Thien Le said. “I saved a lot of money lending. My first year here was hard because the

“It has been a great service to the students and they appreciate it so much,” Larson said.

The Lending Center allowed international students to save money by not having to buy certain items for only a couple of years.

“I want to find something good for my family,” said Bins Nguyen, husband of graduate horticulture student Dediep Nguyen. “It helps me save money. It is very good for use. Students don’t have a lot of money for brand new stuff so they can come here for used items.”

Groundbreaking for the new Spartan Village took place earlier this month, and student family units are set to be complete by fall 2016, with the rest being finished in 2017.

The old Spartan Village was known for housing a large international student population due to being one of the best priced places to live.

OTHER PROGRAMS THE CVIP OFFERS CVIP has an annual event called The Global Festival.

Which offers the chance for the Greater Lansing community the chance to explore cultures from around the world., according to the CVIP’s website.

According to Bieler, this event gives international students the opportunity to share their country’s traditions and customs as well as what to expect if you were to visit. The Global Festival usually hosts 3000 - 5000 people.

This year’s Global Festival will be on Sunday, November 22, from 12 - 5 p.m. in the MSU Union.

At The Global Festival, the World Gift Shop is open for business. “The gift shop is used to raise money for various scholarships for international students,” Bieler said. “International items are sold in order to raise money for scholarships for international students and spouses who attend MSU classes.”

“Anything from small trinkets to lovely vases to Japanese dolls to pottery can be found in the World Gift Shop,” Bieler said. “It really depends on what is given to us. We are in the process of accepting donations right now.”

The CVIP also offers other programs, such as; the International Speakers program (I SPEAK) and a Volunteer English Tutoring Program to provide free English conversation practice for MSU’s international students and scholars and their adult family members.

MSU students can become volunteers for any of these programs.

“We need volunteers,” Bieler said. “The website is the gateway to volunteering. Our website is cvip.isp.msu. edu.”

MSU men’s soccer looking to put offensive struggles behind them

Following a 4-0 loss to No. 14 ranked Notre Dame on Tuesday, the men’s soccer team has now fallen to 3-3-1 on the season, and for the third consecutive game, the Spartans failed to score a goal.

Through seven games this season the Spartans have scored only six goals, four of which coming in a shutout victory against Niagara on Sept. 4.

Since that game, the Spartans have only scored one goal in four contests. Albeit the Spartans have played three consecutive games against opponents ranked higher than them (No. 1 ranked Creighton, No. 4 ranked Maryland and No. 14 ranked Notre Dame), it’s safe to say the offense needs to step it up.

Even with goals coming at a premium, the offense took another step back on Tuesday when a ball bounced off sophomore defender Brad Centala and rolled past senior goalkeeper Zach Bennett for an own goal, which put the icing on the cake that would be a 4-0 loss against Notre Dame.

Thus far on the season, the Spartans have been able to compete with some of the top teams in the nation. Losing 1-0 to No. 1 ranked Creighton and tying No. 4 ranked Maryland 0-0 proves the antidote for this problem lies in key offensive pieces stepping up.

In order for the Spartans to be a threat come tournament time, they will need contributions from all key offensive pieces.

Players such as senior midfielder Jason Stacy, junior midfielder Dewey Lewis, sophomore midfielder Ken Krolicki and freshmen forwards Ryan Sierakowski and DeJuan Jones will need to step up.

The Spartans are hoping moving forward and scoring won’t be an issue, as the regular season schedule is slated to become easier.

“You get beat 4-0 and you don’t really want to think about it anyways,” senior goalkeeper Bennett told the media following Tuesday’s loss against Notre Dame. “You try to grab on to the fact that it’s early in the Big Ten season. We’re fine in the Big Ten, which is one of

our main goals.

“A tie with Maryland isn’t the worst result, and so if we can get back on track with Rutgers, from that standpoint we’ll be fine.”

An improved Spartan offense would complement the already potent defense and make for a lethal combination. Five of the seven games this season have been decided by one goal or fewer, and in those games the Spartans are 2-2-1.

“It could be a lot worse.

We’re not happy with where we are right now but if we look at ourselves, correct our errors, and get back to working hard, we’re going to be alright.”

It’s going to be important for the Spartans to find offense and find it quick. Four of the next six games for MSU are Big Ten Conference games, with three of those teams (Penn State, Wisconsin and Rutgers) ahead of MSU in the Big Ten standings.

This stretch of games could make or break a season for head coach Damon Rensing and the Spartans who are looking to return to the NCAA tournament. The quest for finding some offensive production starts Friday, with MSU set to take on Rutgers in a key conference match up. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Men’s basketball’s Marvin Clark out 6-8 weeks with foot injury

MSU basketball will be without sophomore forward Marvin Clark Jr. for six to eight weeks due to a foot injury, MSU athletics announced on Tuesday.

In the 2014-15 season, Clark opened the eyes of Spartan fans and set a record for most games played in by a freshman (39), tying with teammate and sophomore guard Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. Clark averaged 4.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 11.2 minutes per game last season, helping the Spartans to their first Final Four appearance since 2010.

Clark also started seven games last year for MSU, averaging 8.7 points and 3.4 rebounds

in those games.

He had back-to-back 15-point games in early season match-ups against Loyola Chicago and Santa Clara.

The Spartans first exhibition game of the season is just over six weeks away on Nov. 4 against Northern Michigan.

Roughly eight weeks away is a non-conference matchup against Kansas at The Champions Classic in Chicago.

Clark Jr. played high school basketball in Kansas along with Nairn for the Prep Team at Sunrise Christian Academy.

Other big men on the MSU basketball roster which remain healthy include senior Matt Costello, junior Gavin Schilling, senior Colby Wollenman, freshman Kenny Goins and freshman newcomer Deyonta Davis.

Five things to know about MSU’s week four foe: Central Michigan and linebackers coach Greg Colby was a graduate assistant at MSU from 1987-88 and then he returned as a defensive assistant from 1995-97.

Also, CMU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Morris Watts was an offensive coordinator at MSU from 1986-90 before returning to MSU the first time as an offensive coordinator from 1992-94.

Watts returned to MSU again as an offensive coordinator from 1999-02 and briefly served as the interim head coach at the end of the 2002 season.

PRECISION PASSING CMU’s junior quarterback Cooper Rush is having a great season early on. He is completing just over 70 percent of his passes with 90-of-128 passing for 983 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions through three games.

CMU edged MSU by a score of 29-27 in Spartan Stadium giving Dantonio a 2-1 record against the Chippewas as the head coach at MSU. “Yeah, I remember that date pretty vividly in 2009, so we brought it up,” Dantonio said.

CHANCE ON BIG STAGE AGAINST FAMILIAR FOES For the players from Michigan on both rosters this is an opportunity to play against familiar foes and friends.

Dantonio talked about what this game means to the fans and for Michigan.

“I think Central Michigan, Western fans would prefer to come to Michigan State,” Dantonio said. They’re going to come more. This is important to them as well. Players from those particular programs get excited about the opportunity to play here because it is in-state, because you’re competing against people you know.

“Same with us, we’re competing against people we know, our players know, they physically know them. So I think it’s good, you know, when games are a little bit more interesting.”

Column: Appreciate MSU football’s success Spartan fans have before them a unique opportunity.

For the first time since 1966, MSU football is ranked No. 2 in the country. You read that correctly, No. 2. It’s been nearly 50 years since the Spartans held a ranking higher than No. 3 and for the greater part of those nearly fifty years, the Spartans swam in mediocrity.

Though their record indicates 301-250-9 over those fifty seasons, the record has been skewed by the Mark Dantonio era. If you take out the past eight seasons under Dantonio, the record drops to 226-219-9, only seven games above five hundred. And that is exactly the reason you cannot pass this up.

The recent success of the football program

has not been seen since the 50s and 60s, or since many Spartan students’ grandparents were in college. Most of their parents and older siblings suffered through the agony of mediocre football seasons.

Our parents witnessed years without bowl games, Big Ten titles and even a competitive rivalry with Michigan — some things many of us now take for granted.

The chance to see this brand of football and success does not come around often but now there is an opportunity to revel in the success of MSU. Do not pass it up.

Win or lose, MSU Spartan spirit radiates throughout campus. However, the grumblings about a weak home schedule seem oddly out of place here.

The No. 2 football team takes the field on campus, but because they’re playing a weaker team the attendance will be down? This brand of football comes once in a generation and is

happening in your own backyard.

Leaving early or at halftime of a game is unacceptable and speaks to the character of those sports fans. Granted, MSU is great and will have a few games that become boring and end in a blowout.

Also granted, the weather isn’t always fair but if MSU fans are supposed to be “the best fans in the country” — leaving at halftime doesn’t reflect that, no matter the circumstances.

The opportunity to see the No. 2 team in the land may not come again for another 50 years.

Though as long as Dantonio is at the helm, there is reason to believe otherwise.

However, the chance to witness a national championship in football happens only at a few schools a year — and out of the 127 FBS football teams, 126 finish the season without a national title.

MSU currently has an outstanding possibil-

ity to be the one team that can claim the title.

You have an opportunity to be a part of that and witness it on Saturdays this fall in Spartan Stadium — it’s an opportunity not afforded to many other schools.

It’s an opportunity many past Spartan fans didn’t receive when they called MSU home.

I’m almost certain a vast majority of the alumni, would trade places in a heart beat to be able to cheer on the No. 2 ranked Spartans as a student. If anything, do it for the alumni.

So Spartans, grab your sweatshirts emblazoned with the Spartan logo. Grab your gloves, your headgear, and your keys. Head down to Spartan Stadium and take a moment to realize the chance to see a product this good may never come again.

MSU has a very real shot at winning a national championship on a very large stage. Don’t take it for granted — realize the unique opportunity before you.

About a year ago, supply chain management senior Anton De Avila and finance senior Zak Northrup wanted to find a way to bridge the gap between students and community service.

They decided to create a new group known as Spartans Rebuilding Michigan.

Spartans Rebuilding Michigan is a flexible way for students to be involved in the community, build their resume and gain leadership experience.

“We connect students with non-profits and we also provide connection for them to help out with the community,” Northrup, the external president, said.

The club has grown to 100 members since its creation last spring. Some of the service events Spartans Rebuilding Michigan does include going to the Ronald McDonald House in Lansing, cooking dinner for the families there and a cleaning the house.

“It’s tremendously gratifying,” Northrup said.

“It’s great knowing that we’re doing something for the community and leaving our stamp on Michigan State.”

Spartans Rebuilding Michigan does a variety of community service activities such as working with Lansing food banks to help prepare meals.

Last year, the group collected more than 2000 articles of clothing for those in need during the winter.

“I love all the different volunteer opportunities,” Carla Boffa, hospitality business sophomore and Spartans Rebuilding Michigan member, said “It’s not just one life ‑ we’re expanding and touching a lot of people. It’s so easy to get passionate and get carried away.”

To keep his students engaged and awake, he skateboards around the class. The potential that he could wipe out at any moment is what he says keeps the students’ attention.

“It’s fun,” Ratan said. “It keeps their attention and it keeps me from getting bored too. The students watch me to make sure they don’t miss when I fall.”

The first time Ratan skateboarded in class was actually unplanned. About three years ago, Ratan said he happened to cruise to school and brought his board in class and as he was teaching, he stood on it and started rolling.

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, Ratan skateboards in his Understanding Media class. Ratan, often seen on the MSU campus story on Snapchat, glides from one side of the class to the other on his cruiser longboard.

“It keeps my eyes on him which helps a lot,” computer science sophomore Jordan Erfourth said. “I’d say he’s a great teacher. ... He tries to make it as exciting and interesting for the class as possible.”

Ratan has taught at MSU for four years. This year, he teaches three media and information classes but only skateboards in his undergraduate classes, “Understanding Media”

and “Science Fiction and Technology.”

Ratan said he started skateboarding later in life, when he was 29 years old. He said he does not consider himself a real skateboarder, though he uses his longboard for transportation regularly around campus.

“It’s definitely effective because it’s an 8:30 class and people are generally tired around this time but he’s just a great teacher and he has great ways to interact with the entire class even though it’s 350 people,” business freshman Riley VanPelt said.

Ratan’s main goal is for his students to become enthusiastic about learning. His methods of engaging the class, whether it’s rolling back and forth on a longboard or occasionally yelling while jumping up and down and flailing his arms, are unusual but effective.

“I don’t think it’s a distraction, it becomes natural for students,” Ratan said. “It definitely enhances their attention.”

Ratan said he’s extremely safe when skateboarding. He said he makes sure to go slow so there is nothing to worry about.

He said as long as students are watching him and not scrolling through Facebook or looking at Snapchat, they’re more likely to look at the slides he has up and pay attention.

“It’s a diversion from the boredom that’s inevitable for the students,” Ratan said. “It makes a better experience for me and them.”
