Cedar Village relatively calm after Final Four loss

The stage was set for potentially massive revelries in East Lansing on Saturday night, but MSU’s crushing loss to Duke University in Indianapolis dampened the spirits of students.

East Lansing bars opened their doors early in the afternoon as students and fans gathered outside to enjoy the NCAA Final Four game against Duke.

Peppino’s, Harper’s Restaurant & Brewpub, Buffalo Wild Wings and Dublin Square Irish Pub were all packed around game time as fans turned out in huge numbers to cheer on the basketball team.

The doors to the Breslin Center opened at 5 p.m. to allow students and fans from the greater East Lansing area to watch the game on the big screen.

Following the 81-61 loss in the Final Four, groups of students began to gather on opposing street corners and chant back and forth but stayed relatively calm under significant police surveillance. The energy was significantly lower than last weekend’s celebration following MSU’s win over Louisville.

In Cedar Village, officers wore riot gear and rode horses, but nearly outnumbered students on the streets minutes after the game ended. Even before the game, one building had been fenced off and floodlights were erected, but never used.

The cost of the preventative measures and large police presence are currently not known.

East Lansing police announced the arrest of seven people for disorderly conduct following MSU’s loss, several of them in Cedar Village.

The violations “consisted of wrongfully propelling objects at police and others in the area.”

Objects thrown included lemons and avocados.

Police estimated the size of the crowd in the area at about 100-125 people. In a statement, East Lansing police chief Juli Liebler said she was “glad

that the majority of Spartan fans chose to celebrate responsibly.”

The general attitude of residents in Cedar Village reflected irritation with the heavy police and media presence, with students yelling out their windows for police to “go home” and “nothing is going to happen.”

The picture was starkly different in Lexington, Kentucky, where the end to Kentucky’s perfect season brought about 1,500 students into the streets, resulting in more than 30 arrests, according to police there.

Former MSU student Lucas Gerding said although the police presence put a damper on mass excitement, celebrators turned out and partied as much as they could.

“Win or lose, fans will always do what they do, which is get wild,” Gerding said.

Neuroscience sophomore Joey Leider said he expected a small turnout in the event of a loss, but said he cherished the positivity and school spirit of the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight celebrations the weekend prior.

“When we lose, spirits are down, no one wants to celebrate,” Leider said. “With the loss, this is kind of what I expected — more police than students.”

Most of the serious action took place outside of Cedar Village, as police responded to at least three couches on fire. The first was reported on Evergreen Avenue and Forest Road, and officers were on the scene within a few minutes and quickly dousing the flames.

By 9:20 p.m., students were beginning to slowly head home and file out of the area. Police followed suit and the area was relatively empty by 10 p.m.

Police scanners continued to buzz throughout the night, but the streets of East Lansing remained for the most part silent.

Despite Saturday night’s door-slamming end to MSU’s season, the team’s tournament run may be remembered as a fairy tale.

As the Spartans shift their focus to next season, it looks like the 2015-16 group will inhabit a different form, possibly resembling that of a DC Comics book.

Batman and Robin will be expected to run the show, according to head coach Tom Izzo. That is, junior guard Denzel Valentine and freshman guard Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn, will be the leaders of the team as it pursues a return to the Final Four.

As a senior, it will be Valentine’s team next year, Izzo said, but Nairn will most likely be second-in-command. They’re both on a mission to win the title next season and the recent loss to Duke only fuels Nairn’s fire.

“It’s life,” Nairn said. “You gotta be able to take the hits. This is a major blow for me. I’m sure it’s a major blow for everybody on the team, but you know the type of person I am, the type of human being I am; I thrive off things like this.

“I can promise you; I can promise my teammates every single day, I’m gonna give it everything I got to win a national championship.”

man ever to start at the point guard position in the Final Four and the fourth to start an NCAA tournament game for the program.

Before the season, Draymond Green and Mateen Cleaves were impressed by Nairn’s leadership abilities.

“He’s not caught up in stats,” Cleaves said. “He just does whatever he has to to help this team win.

I do think he’s on track to be in that conversation when you talk about some of the best leaders at Michigan State.”

Beyond his team-first mentality, Nairn approaches life gleaming with positivity. His attitude is infectious, Izzo said. After a few regular season games this year, Nairn would sing in the locker room as media huddled around other players.

Other times, he’s been spotted singing aloud while walking through Bessey Hall.

“Every day’s a good day,” Izzo said. “That’s what he starts every practice with — ‘It’s a good day.’

For him, every day is a good day. I gotta learn from him because all my days aren’t good days.”

On one of Nairn’s sadder days as a Spartan, he was the first player to speak up in the locker room following the 20-point loss to Duke, Izzo said.

“They all made sure we said ‘let’s remember what it’s like to be here,’” Izzo said. “We’re gonna get back here again. I don’t know when, but we’re gonna get back here.”

It might sound absurd, given No. 7 seed MSU’s role as David in a Final Four filled with Goliaths. The other three teams — Duke, Wisconsin and Kentucky — were all No. 1 seeds and dominant regular season performers.

The Spartans expected to compete against a young, athletic and highly-skilled Duke team.

They expected their magical run to continue. But as head coach Tom Izzo said last Wednesday, there is no team of destiny.

“I feel bad because I didn’t think people got to see the team that has won 12 out of the last 15 games,” Izzo said. “Give Duke credit and give our seniors credit for getting us to a place that most people didn’t think we’d get to.”

After big games from the freshman duo Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow, Duke defeated the Spartans at Lucas Oil Stadium, 81-61, to advance to the National Championship round of the NCAA Tournament.

A loud, confident postseason run came to an abrupt end.

Izzo repeatedly said after the game he got everything he could out of this team, a team that was criticized for being untalented, undisciplined and primed for a first-round exit, assuming they even qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

“I got a lot out of a lot of teams over the years,” Izzo said. “This was squeezing blood out of a rock. This team gave me everything they had to give me. They

played through so many things.”

Senior guard Travis Trice said despite the surprise tournament run, he still believes MSU left something on the table in the final game. But given the disappointment the regular season brought, the senior can’t help but feel proud of his team.

“A lot of people counted us out, didn’t think we were going to be here, didn’t think we were going to be in the tournament,” Trice said. “I think that’s definitely a high point for this group. We wanted to win it all, so that’s disappointing. And for me personally, I’m done. But I’m just happy for this group, the way they competed this year.”

I’m happy. I’m proud of the way these guys responded all year.

They never quit.”

NEVER IN THE GAME Izzo pinned most of the blame for the loss Saturday night on himself.

It was a slopfest of a game.

Duke attempted 37 free throws, making 27 of them. They locked down defensively after MSU got off to an early 14-6 lead, holding the Spartans to 35 percent shooting the rest of the way.

Freshman forward Justise Winslow led the Blue Devils with 19 points and nine rebounds, and freshman center Jahlil Okafor added 18 points and six rebounds.

The Spartans battled foul trouble through most of the second half. Quick whistles and an

inability to limit penetration caused sophomore forward Gavin Schilling, junior guard Matt Costello and senior forward Branden Dawson to spend extended minutes on the bench.

“We did not play good. I give them a lot of credit, but I’m not giving them all. We’ve got to get that straight right now. I’m not giving them all.”

ent players through that span of time. Same coach.”

With the loss, Izzo is now 1-9 in his career against Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Junior guard Denzel Valentine shared a few words with his head coach wafter the loss.

“I just looked at him and said, ‘I’m going to get you here next year, coach,’” Valentine said.

“It was a heck of a run. I’m just mad we lost because of BJ (Dawson) and Trav, what they’ve been through, what we’ve been through as a team this season. We got to tip our hat off to Duke. They were the better team today.”

A VOW TO GET BACK Valentine vowed to bring the Spartans back to the Final Four next year. Izzo said to get there, the Spartans have some work to do. More importantly, he has some work to do.

“I have to get some players who can drive the ball and get fouled,” Izzo said. “We gotta do

a better job at recruiting.”

In recent years, that hasn’t been Izzo’s strong suit. The talent disparity was obvious on Saturday and MSU’s momentum didn’t stand a chance.

“Is that going to drive me?

Damn right it’s going to drive me,” Izzo said. “At the same time, the problem when you get this deep or when you schedule the way you do is that you play good people. And some of them are better than you.”

Regardless of the finish, there was a sense of satisfaction from players and coaches after the

loss. The Spartans made the most of this season and next year the Spartans will see the contributions of West Virginia transfer guard Eron Harris, who sat this season out due to NCAA transfer regulations, and the addition of ESPN five-star recruit Deyonta Davis, a power forward from Muskegon.

“I told them, never forget this moment,” Dawson said. “Never forget this feeling. I know these guys are going to get better this summer, and they’re going to have an incredible team next year. We just told them don’t forget this feeling and make it back.”

Up until last season, every four-year player under Izzo had made a Final Four. When MSU lost to UConn in the Elite Eight last March, Keith Appling and Adreian Payne missed that opportunity.

Izzo learned from former MSU head coach Jud Heathcote to cherish these opportunities, because they aren’t promised.

MSU surpassed the odds to get there this year. Next year, expectations will be higher.

“I told them, never forget this moment. Never forget the feeling.

I know these guys are going to get better this summer.”

“There (are) certain opportunities to get so far, and you may never get back there,” Izzo said of the lesson he learned from Heathcote. “That drives you. You could be good. You could be real good. You could be great. Last year, we were great. We were good enough to win it all. And we didn’t even get there.”

Trice and Dawson renewed that streak this year. The future for Trice is currently unclear, but Izzo expects Dawson to test the NBA waters.

“Travis, he gave me his all,” Izzo said. “Believe it or not, Branden Dawson, a cool thing for me and him will be graduation and then getting to a place to play more basketball.”

This season will be considered a stepping stone for MSU. Izzo hasn’t been to the National Championship round since 2000.

That’s the next step, and he won’t quit until he reaches it.

“We’re on that never-ending chase to make sure. I’ve said to many of you, we have one more level to go,” Izzo said. “And I’m not leaving until I get to that one more level.”

Valentine shared a similar sentiment.

“We want to put ourselves in another bracket by winning the national championship,” Valentine said. “Next year, we’re going to be on a mission.”

No doubt the warm weather is fun, but does it hurt grades?

Spring in East Lansing is a double-edged sword.

Actually, no, it’s an awesome time of year. However, the one downside is the futile effort of maintaining focus on homework and tests, while outside the sun is shining and the air is warm.

It seems like the first and last months of the school year require double the amount of concentration to complete even the simplest of academic tasks, or to even attempt them altogether.

Here’s a thought that would make your GPA cringe in fear: What if it were warm all year long?

Yes, it seems impossible, but there are places where the weather isn’t subzero half of the year.

Could you imagine if we all went to Arizona State University or the University of Southern California? Forget studying — most of us would be spending all our time surfing or sunbathing.

But in East Lansing, it is a daily routine in the cold months to gripe about the weather. Phrases like ‘Why do I go to school in Michigan?’ and ‘I should have gone down south for college’ are among the ones I hear most often.

But if there were ever a way to twist the negative aspects of the brutal winter season into benefits, consider the difficulty of maintaining focus

toward schoolwork as the sunny days return to campus.

It’s much easier to study for exams and write essays when you look out the window and see nothing but blizzarding snow and ice.

I’m still baffled as to how students down south manage to deal with the consistently nice weather.

I can only speak for myself, but if I were enrolled at a university where the weather was more than 70 degrees for the majority of the year, my grades would probably sacrifice themselves for a tan.

We’re all so lucky we don’t have to face this kind of mental battle all year long. Okay, maybe not.

But it really could help out in the long run.

With approximately five months without legitimate distraction from weather, it’s easy to make the argument that going to a school with unpleasant weather for part of the year helps to legitimately keep students more focused.

Although, that kind of argument might drive students away from a school like MSU altogether.

Because sacrificing good weather for better focus isn’t the easiest decision to make.

So, with all of that in mind, it is certainly unfortunate timing that final exams come in the first week of May. It’s arguably one of the best weeks of the year, weather-wise, during both the fall and spring semesters.

Students are going to be tested not only by exams, but by all the distractions that come with the suddenly beautiful weather in East Lansing.

But then again, there’s no justifiable scenario to complain about the impending warm weather. So, try to do your best to keep your GPA up as temperatures do the same thing.
