‘Fifty Shades’ makes light of an appalling, abusive relationship

Almost everyone has an opinion on E L James’ erotic book-turned-movie, “Fifty Shades of Grey.” While a large population of women are enamored by the film, proclaiming they want to find their own Christian Grey, a large number of people from within the BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism and masochism) community are outraged by the story, claiming it portrays an unrealistic — and more importantly, unsafe — BDSM relationship.

I have yet to see the movie. I am hesitant to give my money to a film that so blatantly attempts to pass off an abusive relationship as a functional and healthy BDSM one, and I worry for those who watch the film and

believe the behaviors in it are acceptable and safe.

There are myriad reasons why the lifestyle portrayed in “Fifty Shades of Grey” is closer to an abusive relationship than a BDSM one. Christian Grey frequently toes the line between bondage and abuse — he ignores safe words, forces Anastasia to have sex with him when it’s clear she does not want to and stalks her excessively.

Another flaw in the film’s logic is grounding the root of Grey’s unique lifestyle in some kind of childhood trauma. Grey’s mother was physically abusive, and as a result, he claims he is unable to love or to engage in “vanilla sex.”

While abuse can impact a person’s emotional capacity and cause emotional problems, most people involved in BDSM relationships do not claim they are incapable of loving. In order to engage in a BDSM relationship, partners must exhibit an immense amount of trust, respect and love for each other.

None of these things are present in “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Rather than trusting and respecting Christian,

Anastasia is afraid and intrigued by him, and while she is frequently frightened and upset by their relationship, she stays with him due to some delusion that she will be able to fix him.

This idea of trying to fix a violent, broken partner is a textbook example of relationship abuse, and moviegoers are led to believe that it is OK. It’s like because Christian is so mesmerized

by Anastasia, somehow his bizarre, abusive behavior becomes excusable.

Domestic violence is not something to be made light of, and by portraying and glorifying it in this film we allow the vicious cycle to continue.

Women in abusive relationships need to be encouraged and empowered to escape them, rather than being confused and tricked into believing that these abusive tendencies can be passed off as a simple sexual preference.

An actual BDSM relationship is loving, consensual and pleasurable for all parties involved. While some naive viewers have been captivated by Christian, his lack of respect for Anastasia isn’t kinky, hot or amusing — it’s downright abusive.

East Neighborhood is underrated, and it’s only getting better

What happened to East Neighborhood? What happened to it being the butt of jokes of the residential buildings on campus? What happened to the notion that East Neighborhood is for the “outcasts” of campus?

While it may take time for these thoughts to completely vanish from the minds of students, I truly believe that East Neighborhood, like Brody Neighborhood, might just have created its own awesome identity.

For starters, the dining scene in East Neighborhood has experienced a huge boost in quality. The new Akers dining hall, which was completed earlier this school year, is absolutely amazing. The dining hall is a tremendous upgrade from the one in Akers last year and has generated interest

from students all over campus.

What strikes me most about the dining hall is that the environment has a Brody cafeteria-type feel to it.

The hall has an entirely new look, and that unique look — I believe — will turn out to be an appealing asset to East Neighborhood. Not to mention Holmes Hall, which is technically in River Trail but sits right next to East Neighborhood, is still open for business and remains one of the top dining options on campus.

Another factor that gives East Neighborhood a special

feel is the open space sitting across the street.

R ight across f rom East Neighborhood’s backyard is a huge, open field that sits behind the Wharton Center parking structure and IM Sports-East.

While living in East Neighborhood last year as a freshman, some of my best memories of college so far have taken place on that field.

I vividly remember spending hours playing full-length football and ultimate frisbee games, and making good friends while doing it. Not to

equipment, and that is what edges IM Sports-West out over IM Sports-East. If the gym equipment in IM Sports-East were upgraded and the workout room expanded, the facility would undoubtedly create a new benefit for living in East Neighborhood.

I know that East Neighborhood still might not be the most popular place to live on campus, but I truly believe the neighborhood has the potential to become one of the more popular neighborhoods that we have here at MSU. It may take time, but if in five to 10 years down the road East Neighborhood is the new “spot” on campus, I would not be surprised at all.

As MSU gears up to rid campus of tobacco with the help of the newly formed tobacco-free task force, international students are reflecting on what that could mean for them.

At last week’s ASMSU meeting, Asian Pacific American Students Organization representative Kyle Parent brought up points from his constituents who feel ostracized on campus. He expressed concern for the possible tobacco ban on campus and its possible effect on Asian international students.

In 2013 The State News reported MSU enrolled 4,283 Chinese students, 563 Korean students, and 276 Indian international students, which are all countries that have far more permissive regulations when it comes to tobacco.

“I think that smoking in a lot of Asian countries is looked at very differently than how it is looked at in the U.S.,” Director of MSU Asian Studies Center Siddharth Chandra said. “We (the U.S.) have regulated tobacco more firmly than a lot of countries in Asia, and so I think the prevalence of smoking is much higher in a country like China.”

Nearly half of adult males smoke tobacco in China, he said.

It is obvious smoking is a public health concern around the world and still contributes to the death of an estimated 443,000 Americans every year according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But Asian international students who enroll at MSU face significant differences in people’s views of tobacco when they arrive in East Lansing, and this can contribute to a feeling of exclusion and

negativity.

“Certainly a feeling like (Asian students) are judged. ... In the U.S. smoking is more stigmatized and we think more negatively at smoking, which isn’t really the case in Asia, and that cultural change can sometimes create a feeling of discomfort among Asian students,” Chandra said.

And some Asian students are feeling that discomfort.

“Most of my friends just stay with other international students, and we really only come to campus for class, but I don’t think people like us when we are smoking,” finance junior Dongze Wang said.

The tobacco task force at MSU, headed by the University Physician’s Office, has not created a tobacco ban on campus yet, but is currently working on a plan to transition MSU to a tobacco-free campus as early as this summer.

“My only concern is that I would have to go off campus and somewhere far away just to smoke,” freshman Chinese international student David Wang said. “I feel like it’s taking away our right. ... It’s only bad for the people who smoke.”

Although some Asian international students are concerned about the possible tobacco ban effects, Chandra believes the university is taking them into consideration during this process.

“I think the university administration is very aware of the contribution our Asian students add to the culture and the intellectual life at the university,” he said. “I think as the number of international students has grown, the university has also grown to embrace what it sees as its responsibility to ensure that Asian students are as much ... a part of our student body as anyone else from anywhere in the world.”

Now in his senior year studying jazz, Olin Clark wrote several jazz nonets featuring himself and his closest friends for his senior recital

Jazz studies senior Olin Clark has been playing and writing music since he first received a guitar for his 13th birthday. Though he admittedly, had no idea what he was doing at the time, Clark has since gone from writing beginner’s music for guitar to writing full nonet jazz pieces.

Sunday night he performed his senior recital in Hart Recital Hall to an audience of about 70 people, comprised mainly of teachers, family and classmates. Applause thundered through the crowd after each song and even after each particularly pleasing instance of sound, which was also occasionally accompanied by cheers.

Some of the music, Clark said, he

had been writing for years. And for each piece of the nonet, he had a specific person in mind.

“I knew the sound I wanted,” he said. “Like, I wanted to hear my friend Derrick (Newbold) on sax, so I wrote the music to fit that.”

The recital was filled with typical and not-so-typical jazz pieces — the first half contained covers of songs written by different composers, while the latter half was all Clark’s work.

“The songs are about experiences and things I’ve learned,” he said, including a song about spirit possession and one about his late grandfather.

As for the future, Clark’s plans are still unclear. While, ideally, he would like to live in New York City and play music, he thinks he’ll be spending some more time in the Lansing area

before moving away. Though music education might be in his future, Clark said right now he just wants to “get out there and play.”

His mother and grandmother, who provided home-cooked Lebanese and Syrian food for the post-recital reception, have been incredibly supportive of Clark throughout his music career and watched his recital from the front row.

At the conclusion of the recital, his family was among the first to be thanked, but Clark said he felt particularly grateful for all of the hard work his friends did to learn his difficult music and emphasized how thankful he was for them and being able to play with such talented musicians.

“It’s really cool to do something like this with friends,” he said. “And all I had to do was pay them with a pizza.”

As the men’s basketball team prepares for a March run, the team’s big three must have take on even more prominent roles than they have had so far this season.

Branden Dawson, Travis Trice and last Saturday’s hero Denzel Valentine will have to step up even more if MSU is going to go into the NCAA Tournament on a run or back into March Madness.

Branden Dawson The senior forward is playing at an All-Big Ten level right now, averaging 11.9 points and 10 rebounds per game. He’s the only player in the league averaging a double-double, and he’s coming off of an incredible stat line against Ohio State — 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and five blocks.

Head coach Tom Izzo thought Dawson started off slow, but by halftime, he was locked in.

“BJ (Dawson) wasn’t himself the first couple minutes,” Izzo said. “I told him I thought he was not running very hard, not working very hard. But boy is it fun to see him not argue and then do some-

thing and then go into halftime, say ‘I got you, coach. I knew what I was doing.’”

Dawson, a 44.4 percent free throw shooter this season, made two critical free throws down the stretch in Saturday’s win. It was a result of the dedication Dawson has put into his game and the hours spent in the practice gym, Izzo said. “(At) 11:30 every day, you want to see Dawson.

He’s got a class in there,” Izzo said. “It’s so fun when you’re on guys hard, like everybody claims I am, and then when you see — I mean, I could just do nothing but smile when Dawson made his free throws.”

Travis Trice For two straight games, senior guard Travis Trice has come off the bench. In those two games, MSU has picked up important conference victories, and Trice has been solid.

As the second half wound down on Saturday, Trice was right in the thick of things.

“I told him, I put the ball in his hand but it can’t be for a jacked three, and he took that one to the hole,” Izzo said. “It was almost like somebody was looking

down, and it just all went like it was supposed to go.”

The play Izzo was referring to came with 1:16 left in the game. Trice attacked the basket, and despite some contact, he found a way to get his layup to drop. The senior finished the game with nine points and five assists.

Like he was with Dawson, Izzo was impressed with Trice’s performance.

“Your seniors, your upperclassmen gotta play well to have a great season,” Izzo said. “Boy at the right time, they did.”

Denzel Valentine After a 33-point blowout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, junior guard Denzel Valentine said that he didn’t think he needed to be the “go-to guy.” As long as he made the right pass or shot, MSU would be fine.

Valentine hit one of the biggest shots of his Spartan career Saturday, a game-winning three to lift MSU to an crucial win. His tune has changed a bit, saying that he wanted the ball in his hands. Taking and making shots like his game-winner is why he wanted to be at MSU, he said.

Izzo wanted nobody other than Valentine to have the ball in the closing minutes. It’s a privilege that he’s earned, Izzo said.

“Unless he has a broken arm, that’s the decision,” Izzo said.

“And if the whole world knows it, I really don’t care. So, be prepared for him. Because he just can do different things. You always want it in a guy’s hand that can either make a great pass, make a shot or make a free throw when he gets fouled. He’s earned the right.”

Mix It Up! Dance Club provides aspiring dancers with no-pressure dance environment

When Katie Yekin and Caitlin Karram met their freshman year, both girls knew they wanted to continue practicing dance, as each had an extensive background in the art form.

The two friends decided to take matters into their own hands and create a dance team where they could make their own rules and lead the practices themselves.

Three years later, that dream is a reality as special education senior Yekin and education senior Karram have establishing a team of 12 for their Mix It Up! Dance Club.

“We are essentially a dance club for girls who want to dance without the competitive edge,” Yekin said. “We don’t compete. We just perform for fun and essentially dance for fun.”

Having a good time while learning new things seems to be the club’s motto. During tryouts, which occur at the beginning of each fall and spring semester, they welcome everyone — even those who have never set foot on a dance floor.

It’s the idea of accepting almost everyone into their group that persuaded many of the members, including biolog y senior Abby

Crampton, to join.

“I just ended up really liking it. I like how we are a low-time commitment club,” Crampton said. “I still get to dance, and I don’t know what I would do if I had to stop.”

To determine which dances they best fit into, a second tryout is held in the spring where Karram and Yekin reassess each member’s skill and place them accordingly.

Ultimately, once placed in a group, the team members have the opportunity to choose which group routines they would like to perform in addition to performing smaller group dances, such as duets.

“My favorite part is probably the point when you choreograph the team and it’s completely finished,” Yekin said. “When you spend so much time choreographing a piece and thinking about how it’s going to work and then watching it all happen and it looking sort of like you wanted it to, is really cool.”

The club practices Mondays and Thursdays each week 7-9 p.m. in 204 Natural Science Building.

It’s during these four hours a week the club practices nailing the choreography for upcoming performances.

looking at performing at Relay for Life and Dance Marathon. Also, at the end of every year we have a recital where we do all the routines that we worked on all year.”

Yekin said one of the things that makes Mix It Up! special is what the new members can bring to the group, such as new tricks.

“It’s very cool to see how all of our different cultures and all of our different studio upbringings or dance team upbringings come together to make one team,” she said.

Psychology freshman Hanhan Xie is one of the few international students in the group and said joining Mix It Up! has helped her make the transition moving from China to America.

“By joining this club I can meet more American friends, and I can learn more about the American culture,” Xie said. “I have improved my dance skill and my English.”

Currently, it’s $70 to join the dance club the first year, but then every year thereafter the cost is reduced to $40.

“We have all become like a really cool and cohesive group,” Yekin said.

“For people (who) haven’t danced, we would like them to become dancers and like dancing and be in love with it.”

Spring semester means a lot of things for college students, including new classes, frigid temperatures and more exams. An added layer of stress for many is the search for a place to live for the upcoming academic year. Thankfully, there are a number of online resources available to those who are making the move off campus.

SpartanSpaces.com This housing search engine provides a wide variety of search options to aid in the quest for the perfect apartment. There are options for more than 50 different amenities and for almost any pet you can think of.

This site is particularly strong in subleases, though a number of standard apartment rentals are available as well. Each listing even shows a pie chart of typical tenants, giving potential renters a good idea of what sort of environment they would be getting into.

Craigslist A favorite for some, Craigslist is the go-to website for finding cheap items. There are long lists of houses and apartments for rent, sometimes very cheap, but the novelty of this resource is fading with more and more news reports of “Craigslist killers” who take advantage of potential buyers. When going to visit a potential apartment or meet with a subleaser, make sure to bring a friend or two along.

“Free and For Sale” Facebook Group Amidst the numerous posts about clothing and electronics for sale by students are advertisements for subleases and other rental opportunities. This can be a preferable resource for many potential renters because they can message the person they’re interested in talking to directly and can even see a profile photo of who exactly they’re dealing with, reducing the potentially off-putting anonymity associated with similar sites.

MSU’s Off-Campus Housing Search This website is moderated by the university, so many of the listings come directly from the apartment companies in the Lansing area. A great benefit of this search engine are the pictures — they’re gorgeous. If they are provided by the apartment complexes, that is, which also can leave potential renters wondering if they’re only advertising the best they have instead of their usual apartment space. Nevertheless, this site is a good resource for those who want to be put directly in contact with apartment complexes and their renting offices.

CribSpot Created by college students for college students, CribSpot offers a sleek website design that pairs listings with an interactive map of the renting location. However, like the MSU-moderated website, the majority of rental listings here appear to be commercial in nature. Those looking to sublease should turn to other resources.

New options for students looking for housing

Students looking to live off campus next school year will have the option of living in newly constructed buildings in a number of areas.

The Element 903 apartments The Element 903 complex is set to open Aug. 6, 2015, just in time for the start of fall semester. The complex is described as “luxury apartments” and is located directly across from the Bogue Street entrance to MSU. Three different packages are offered to prospective residents, property director Jon Foster said. They have the rooms ranked silver for $750, gold for $800 and platinum for $850.

“The difference is the amount of furnishing and the quality of the furnishings,” Foster said. “We have upgraded furnishings for our platinums, and also those units are on the top floor, which seems to be the most desirable floor.”

Each resident of The Element 903 signs their own lease and each unit consists of two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Trowbridge Village Trowbridge Village is set to conclude construc-

tion before the start of fall semester in the summer of 2015. The area was designed “to provide a high quality mixed-use commercial experience, which includes affordable housing options near the campus of Michigan State University.”

While its exact composition of shops is not yet finalized, the area is set to include a grocery store Fresh Thyme Market to replace Goodrich’s Shop-Rite.

River Caddis Development is the developing company overseeing the construction. Its president, Kevin McGraw, could not be reached before press time.

Other projects Other living spaces set to be available further in the future include the completely redone Garten Haus Apartments on Gunson Street, which in the past have been one-room cottages. They are set to be demolished in mid-August for a new series of three-story complexes to be completed between August and October of 2016, leasing manager Greg Bowe said.

DTN Management, which manages a number of complexes in the East Lansing area, recently scrapped plans to develop in the city’s Park District after a vote to sell city property failed.

Last summer was my first experience living on my own outside of the dorms. The amount of freedom I’d found in East Lansing during my freshman year was something I did not want to let go of once summer rolled around.

So when my friend told me she was subleasing her apartment for the summer while she went on a study abroad trip, everything felt as if it was falling into place. For the most part, everything did fall together perfectly for the summer, minus a few snags with a missing key that left me occasionally locked out.

However, there were a few things that made my summer sublease both lucky and survivable.

Besides the missing key, the only thing that had me on edge was my terror at the thought of moving into an apartment with three people I didn’t know very well, since socializing has never been a forte of mine.

I feared feeling like an intruder in someone else’s home, but that fear didn’t last longer than a day.

My new roommates were friendly and bubbly and made me feel at home with meals and binge-watching sessions of “Doctor Who” whenever I was at our Cedar Village apartment.

While my own subleasing experience was

pleasant, I’ve heard horror stories about subleases gone wrong and roommates barely being able to tolerate each other during the summer’s short, three-month span.

From tales of passive-aggressive sticky note messages to new roommates stealing — and later destroying — each other’s clothes, I feel like I lucked out with my own situation.

But in case you’re subleasing from a total stranger, you should make sure to try and spend some time with potential new roommates to make sure your personalities mesh. You don’t want to be trying to rip each other’s hair out by the end of the summer.

Other than getting to know potential roommates, subleasers and those looking to sublease their apartment for the summer should just try to be organized in their search.

Many of those looking to sublease are graduating in the spring and are already up to their ears in stress. If you’re looking to sublease your apartment, start posting in different Facebook groups to try and generate interest. Ask your co-workers, your friends and the friends of your friends if anyone is looking for a place to live.

Those looking for a place to stay over the summer, all you need to do is ask around, but start planning now so you’re not scrambling for a last-minute location that even CATA won’t pick you up at.

And once you have a potential subleaser or person to sublease from, communicate with them.

Introduce them to your roommates, let them know how rent, groceries and chores are divided and arm them with everything they need to know about living in your former home.

If all goes according to plan, your summer sublease shouldn’t end up a disaster.
