Dangers of social media still overlooked by many

Did last night really happen without an Instagram post? In our generation, probably not.

I’ve learned through the experiences of others to be safe on social media.

A friend of mine worked for a cheerleading camp last summer, where she constantly worked with young girls. Even though her social media page was set on private, somehow her boss stumbled upon her account.

In a meeting at practice, her boss addressed all the coaches about inappropriate interactions on social media, then my friend was confronted. If a superior goes through this much trouble for a part-time summer job, just think about what measures a CEO would take to research his or her future employees.

When you finally graduate from college and apply for your first grown-up job, those photos might come back to haunt you. While the witty tweets may get a lot of likes among your friends and retweets from the popular @msupartystories, it may backfire when a future employer looks up your accounts. They could grill you about it in your

interview or choose another candidate for the job.

Students might not think about the long-term effect of inappropriate posts on social media.

It might seem harmless, such as posting a photo after a rager at your fraternity house. But the photo with a red solo cup in your hand and the beer pong table in the background may be better off kept to yourself. Students who willingly post photos featuring drugs or underage drinking are documenting their illegal actions.

Pro tip: set the beer down before the photo is snapped.

With the world of technology continuously advancing, it’s no suprise that new media poses a threat to its users. Until the medium has existed for a while, it’s hard for users — including students — to realize its lasting effects.

Since the beginning of the school year, Yik Yak has emerged to cause some problems on our campus. It appears that Yik Yak posts are anonymous, but site administrators and law enforcement can and will track you if it comes to extreme cases.

Just last week, a link shared on Yik Yak by an individual in the East Lansing showed an explicit video possibly featuring a male from the fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha.

Last Thursday, a former freshman Spartan pleaded guilty to an act of terrorism for posting a shooting threat on Yik Yak. No matter if he planned to follow through with it or if he was just joking, severe consequences followed.

Be smart, Spartans. And post responsibly.

If you ask a college student what they do in the morning, you will get a wide array of answers.

But many will say that somewhere between hitting the snooze button for five extra minutes of sleep and rushing out the door, they check their emails.

Unfortunately for MSU students, this might not have been possible during the first week or so of the new semester.

It seems like every year it is the same cycle — the first and last week of the semester, a bunch of important MSU sites start crashing.

With professors relying on technology more and more, this leaves students extremely vulnerable to these sites going down.

Everything students need to succeed is online. When these servers are flooded, all their resources are (temporarily) lost. That means no access to Angel, Desire2Learn, WeBWork, LON-CAPA or email.

It is very disheartening when I am trying to print lecture notes off before class and D2L won’t open.

Friends of mine have also voiced frustration that they couldn’t do their homework over the weekend because of crashes.

Last semester I couldn’t access my final exam study guides because of servers crashing. In retrospect, I was lucky. Some students had online finals that wouldn’t load.

If these sites crash when we need them most, why not name them something more accurate?

How about “e-fail?” If my “Desire2Learn” is being impeded by this software, how much of an “Angel” is it to me?

I don’t understand how this can be such a consistent problem. It is common sense that the servers will be overwhelmed with so many users accessing them in such a sort span of time. Isn’t there a way to plan for that overload and still have the sites operate?

Look, I don’t want to surf these sites. They could load like dial-up and I would be happy.

What makes me unhappy is when I try to enter my login information for 30 minutes before my email finally opens. Then I have to stop from pulling my hair out when I click an unread email and I get sent back to the login screen.

I just feel like something could — and needs to — be planned in advance to avoid this frustration.

There are plenty of stressful things happening to students throughout the semester. Do we really need to add logging into our own school accounts to the list?

News Bus overcrowding proves tedious for students hoping to avoid snow With the influx of students riding CATA buses on campus, delays and packed buses are becoming an everyday issue for students hoping to avoid slush and ice on the way to classes

It’s no surprise that as the temperature drops, so does the amount of students who are willing to walk to their classes.

Rather than trekking across campus in the frigid climate, some students opt to ride the Capital Area Transportation Authority buses to class. While this increase in bus crowding can be irritating to students having to stand for the duration of their bus journey, it also causes frustration and anxiety among riders who depend on the buses to get them to class on time.

In her experience, kinesiology freshman Mallory Jackson said the buses become the most crowded at 9:30 a.m. and noon.

“Ever yone has 10:20 (a.m.) and 12:40 (p.m.) classes, and so they’re just packed,” Jackson said.

This overcrowding can cause students to be late to class because the buses won’t pick up passengers once they reach a certain capacity. No preference freshman Rachel Beck, who lives in Brody Neighborhood, shared the frustrations that come along with living on the outermost edges of campus when the buses are full.

“Everyone starts crowding around ... and it just drives by us,” Beck said.

While they understand the student’s frustrations, CATA bus drivers emphasized that while timeliness is important, safety is the No. 1 priority.

“I won’t let students on the bus past the yellow line (painted in the front of the bus). That’s a federal safety regulation,” said Tim, a bus driver who declined to give his last name.

He said that while crowding might be “slightly more severe in the winter, you can’t necessarily make that claim without examining data.”

Once students make it on to the crowded buses, the close quarters bring up a whole new round of issues.

... I’ve been worried that I’m not going to be able to get off of the bus in time, that they’ll shut the doors before I can get off,” Beck said.

Police use posters to spread emergency info With the recent shooting scares, MSU police hope posters in every classroom will help students and faculty feel more at ease if the need to use emergency procedures arises again

MSU police have worked with the Office of Planning and Budgets to put together a classroom emergency guidelines poster to better educate faculty and students on what to do in crisis situations in the classroom.

A false gunman scare in the spring semester of 2014 left some students and faculty questioning emergency protocol.

The process of putting the posters up in classrooms has already begun, so students and faculty can begin looking for the them during the next several months before the process is completed

by August 2015, said Barbara Kranz, Director of Facilities and Space Management and Assistant Director of the Office of Planning and Budgets.

“This has been a need to update what we currently use within our classrooms in a way that was more helpful, visible and combined some different postings into one place,” MSU police

Capt. Penny Fischer said in an email. “The impetus came from faculty comments about addresses for rooms/buildings, student comments about ‘what should we do if....’ And staff needs to document locations for IT support in the classroom, as well as occupancy requirements for fire codes.”

The development of the signs came from the support of the Safety and Security Committee, Kranz said, referring to a collection of organizations that meets to discuss safety and security at MSU that includes both the MSU police as well as the Office of Planning and Budgets.

Each poster will be mounted just inside the door of each classroom and the signs will hit several key points of what should be done in emergency situations. These include what to do in an active shooter situation, directions for how to secure in place, evacuation guidelines, seeking shelter guidelines and directions for what to do in the event of a hazardous material leak or spill.

“The first main part of these posters are they

are designed as a ‘road map’ to our likely emergencies. In this way, those coming from other parts of the country and the world can understand what we see to be the issues we face,” Fischer said. “Second, it provides to all a common operating picture of how to manage incidents outlined so we can work as a spartan team member. Third, it is something we can do well in advance of an emergency so that we can practice our response.”

Fischer said the posters will be helpful in providing walk-throughs of what to do in various emergency scenarios.

For many MSU students, the posters provide a sense of security, especially after the shooting scares and bomb threats the university has had the past few years.

“I think it is necessary because it gives everybody awareness to what’s going on and you can learn more about it and that way, you’re more aware if things happen,” biochemistry and molecular biology junior Meghan Kenne-

dy said. “Having those guidelines (would make me feel more safe) because if something did happen, everybody would know what to do.”

For professor of economics Lawrence Martin, although he says he’s yet to have a crisis in his teaching career, he believes having these posters in place will be a very helpful tool.

“I think it’s important to know what to do in a crisis before it happens rather than trying to figure out to do when it happens,” Martin said.

The process of determining the exact cost of the posters is still being finalized but the funding will come from the Safety and Security Committee, Kranz said. "(The posters) will serve the MSU community by providing some expectations and information to allow all community members the ability to know what is expected,” Fischer said.

“In addition, it is a helpful reminder of what we each should do to be prepared for any emergency or disaster. I call it, ‘putting us all on the same page’ both literally and figuratively.”

The thought of MSU Basketball brings with it images of Tom Izzo and former legendary players such as Magic Johnson or Mateen Cleaves, or even of MSU’s 28 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Final Fours and two national championships.

But many fans may not immediately consider the actual cost of attending a game. The costs of going to a game starts to add up as soon as a fan buys their ticket.

The price of MSU basketball tickets on StubHub vary from game to game, with tickets as low as $4.05, which is the case with the game against Penn State, and as high as $742.28, which is the current price of an Ohio State game ticket.

Concession prices are another factor a fan must consider when attending a game. Some students have said the prices are too high.

Animal science junior Cooper Hasselbrink is a season ticket holder in The Izzone, and recalled spending a large chunk of change each game.

“I will sometimes get some snacks at the game,” Hasselbrink said.

“I haven’t gotten any this year, but I did a lot last year. Usually it was just a large drink and sometimes a pretzel. It was around five or eight bucks a game at least.”

Hasselbrink said he reconsidered the frequency at which he purchased concessions this year because of the price.

“I think (prices) are too high, and they definitely keep me from buying more. That’s the reason I haven’t been buying anything this year,” Hasselbrink said.

Athletic training senior Luke Klawiter used to have Izzone tickets and tried to save money by spending sparingly on concessions.

“Usually I would have snacks waiting in line. Occasionally I would buy a water or a pop if I needed the caffeine,” Klawiter said. “Once or twice I would buy nachos or hot dogs. If (concessions) were cheaper I’d be more likely to buy them more often, but I just try to save money overall by bringing snacks.”

Not all students are as concerned with concessions, however.

concessions, but this is not because of the prices.

“I don’t think (prices) are bad compared to other venues I’ve been to,” Valade said. “I rarely buy anything. Occasionally I will buy a drink.”

Athletic training senior Brad Weitzel is another former Izzone member who said the prices are reasonable compared to other sporting locations.

ASMSU makes strides at Big Ten Students Conference, looks to take concerns to D.C.

Delegates from ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, returned Sunday from the Association of Big Ten Students Conference held during the weekend at Northwestern University near Chicago.

Student governments from each Big Ten school met in the Windy City and built on the association’s growing relationship, working to define a legislative platform for the Big Ten’s lobbying trip to Washington, D.C. in April.

The Big Ten’s legislative platform includes giving schools the power to decide if they want stu-

dents involved in judiciary processes, repealing the student unit record ban allowing students to get a more accurate understanding of the value a school has, and supporting fully funding the Federal Pell Grant Program to make college more affordable for low-income families. The platform focuses on giving schools the liberty to decide on issues for themselves instead of the federal government mandating them.

“We obviously want there to be transparency in higher education, but when government gets involved we want to make sure that it’s very carefully done,” ASMSU Vice President of Governmental Affairs KC Perlberg said.

ASMSU’s bill to create a Big Ten committee

to provide feedback for President Obama’s proposed federal college rating system passed at the conference. Student government members from Iowa, Minnesota, Maryland, MSU and Ohio State will make up the committee and will work to provide a framework for rating colleges based on student needs in the conference.

“The reaction to it seemed very good,” said Perlberg, who introduced the bill. “It was one of the most substantive bills that the Big Ten passed this weekend, so I’m very pleased with that.”

Aside from voting on legislation for the upcoming lobbying trip, the conference allowed schools to improve relationships and strengthen their own student governments by learning from each we dne s day, January 2 1 , 2 01 5

other and sharing ideas.

“It’s very clear that now at the conference each Big Ten school is a stakeholder in ABTS and they really do care about the association moving forward and seeing where it can grow and lead to,” ASMSU Vice President of Academic Affairs and ABTS Executive Director Teresa Bitner said.

This was the first year all 14 student government presidents participated in the conference, a symbol of growing engagement in Big Ten student government affairs, Bitner said.

“The dedication that other schools have put into coming and being present and also participating ... has certainly evolved,” Bitner said.

Spotlight Social media serves as a catalyzing force for news and movements Whether it’s an explicit video or a civil rights movement, social media has become a key tool in connecting different people across campus as well as the globe

In the end, it’s really just four lines.

Two horizontal, two vertical, slightly slanted and crossed together. That’s all a hashtag is, technically. But for today’s generation, the hashtag is so much more than four lines. It’s a conversation starter. It’s a way to break news and mobilize action.

And students are using social media for so much more than posting “Man Crush Mondays” or pictures of the antics from the night before.

“It’s a good way to let people know what’s going on in their community,” physics junior Kurt Hamel said.

It can also bring people together from all walks of life and all continents of the globe. Journalism professor Bonnie Bucqueroux said her YouTube channel and news blog have helped her reach out to readers across the globe.

“I’ve had connections with people around the world (whom) I would have had no other way (of knowing),” Bucqueroux said.

Movements Sites like Twitter — the main home of the ubiquitous hashtag — can be an effective medium to rally support for a common cause. #BlackLivesMatter is one movement that has gained widespread attention through social media.

“BlackLivesMatter did a very good job of raising awareness about some of the issues of over policing, militarized policing, racist policing (and) racial profiling,” Bucqueroux said.

According to Topsy.com, a Twitter analytics website, Twitter users tweeted the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter more than 6,000 times on Dec. 23, which was 20 days after a grand jury decided not to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner.

Since Christmas, #BlackLivesMatter hasn’t eclipsed more than 3,200 tweets per day, according to the website.

And for some students, social media isn’t capable of telling all sides of a story and create tension along racial lines when it comes to controversial topics.

“I think people my age use social media both positively and negatively,” journalism sophomore Kevyn Roberts said. “It’s always that one person who will take what you say out of context and try to argue with you … especially if it’s someone of the other race.”

Roberts said she has conversations about societal issues with her friends and family but prefers to leave her opinion off social media because people lack knowledge.

“I try not to just believe everything I read or pay to much attention to it,” Roberts said.

Hamel was just one of the many students to take a stand against fall commencement speaker George Will, who in a Washington Post column said being a campus rape survivor was a “coveted status” of “victimhood.”

Hamel said he posted a petition on the MSU events and parties page on Facebook and also linked to an event page for an alternate graduation ceremony.

“This is one of the big, first events like a pro-

test that I have ever seen on social media that I have acted in,” Hamel said, adding that he is more accustomed to seeing posts about music and parties.

Thanks in part to social media, students who did not support Will as a commencement speaker were able to have their own graduation.

In protest of George Will’s commencement speech, five students attended an alternate graduation and were recognized by 30 MSU faculty members, who shook the hands of the graduates.

Hashtags like #ItsOnYouMSU and #RespectSurvivors were a unifying mechanism which gave the movement and the protestors an identity.

“It helped a lot, it got the word out, it let people know what was going on,” Hamel said. “Otherwise people would have no idea.”

Other hashtags that have become popular include the #ItsOnUs campaign against sexual assault, and the female empowerment hashtag #yesallwomen, referring to a statement that all

women have been harassed by men at some point in their lives.

Prisoners of the moment Social media can be a good way to garner interest, but some say it might not be the most effective way to sustain interest.

“There are dramatic cases where there’s a lot of conversation, but does the conversation actually translate into action?” Bucqueroux said.

Constantly refreshing newsfeeds and timelines also have made it difficult for social media users to promote and focus on one issue.

“It’s always something smaller that has more spotlight than the bigger issues,” Roberts said. “I know for a while people didn’t even know about the stuff happening in Ferguson with Mike Brown, it was heart wrenching.”

Bucqueroux, who personally uses social media to promote societal issues, agreed that people can be fickle and lose interest quickly.

“It can be faddish sometimes. The hard part is translating that into coherent social action,” Bucqueroux said. “The way in which social action takes place is when people become educated and reach a critical mass on certain issues.”

Bucqueroux pointed out the #BringBackOurGirls movement, which became popular on Facebook last April after nearly 300 female students were kidnapped from school in Nigeria.

phone and captured Penn’s comments. The video, which was about nine minutes long, showed Penn saying that Republicans “raped the country.”

The video went viral, and Penn was temporarily removed from his teaching duties, a decision many students supported after seeing the video.

The rant also drew national reaction from a number of news outlets.

“Whether it is on the far left or far right, the professor shouldn’t use his pulpit to spew that kind of hate,” Schrage previously told The State News.

Students took to social media during another incident when mathematics professor John McCarthy began yelling and reportedly stripped naked at the Engineering Building in October 2012.

The incident went viral on the social networking site Reddit, where a student posted a photo with the caption, “My math teacher just stripped naked during class and was arrested! Go MSU!” The pitfalls It’s relatively common but potentially frightening knowledge that what someone posts in the Internet could very well remain in cyber-

space forever.

Some social media apps have tried to adapt to this fear. Snapchat, for example, allows users to send photos or videos that only appear on the recipient’s screen for a chosen number of seconds before disappearing.

Media and information professor Charles Steinfield said this is an interesting concept.

He said it appeals to people because we like to be in control of our personal data.

“I think it actually reveals that people don’t like the fact that everything they do in a fun way is potentially going to come back and haunt them,” Steinfield previously told The State News.

Yik Yak is an app that is referred to by many as “anonymous Twitter,” in which postings can be shared with anyone in proximity, but with protected identity.

For some students, like arts and humanities freshman Aaron Sanford, the app is a good way for students to express themselves in college without fearing repercussions.

“Sometimes you want to talk about school, a

class or your job, but you can’t tweet about it because you can get in trouble, so you can just yak about it,” he previously told The State News.

But that anonymity doesn’t always protect users from criminal repercussions or scandal.

The MSU chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity was slammed with controversy after a post on the anonymous smart phone app Yik Yak alluding to a video of a woman performing oral sex on a man was circulated last week.

The fraternity has been accused on anonymous message boards online like Yik Yak of drugging the female in the video and filming the video non-consensually.

President of Pi Kappa Alpha Christopher Kojaian alleged the video originated at another university with the same acronym as MSU, and there are several other “MSUs” with their own chapters of the fraternity.

And on Nov. 24, a vague shooting threat prompted a lockdown for East Lansing Public Schools. The threat said “I’m gonna (gun emoji) the school at 12:15 p.m. today,” according to court records.

MSU police Capt. Penny Fischer previously told The State News that the entire ordeal lasted around 30 minutes from the time MSU received the threat and the time the suspect, later identified as former finance freshman Matthew Michael Mullen, 19, was apprehended. He eventually pled guilty.

But social media interaction doesn’t have to be negative.

During the bomb threat, The State News tweeted a request to its followers to keep track what buildings had gone under lockdown.

The response was overwhelming.

Dozens of students sent messages from their respective classroom buildings, some with photo attachments, keeping their fellow Spartans in the loop.

Social media has the ability to make the world smaller, but keeping the attention of the digital generation might pose a new problem.

“How do we take that next step and translate awareness into action? I think we don’t know yet,” Bucqueroux said. “That’s the missing piece in social media that we haven’t worked out yet.”

For many students involved with equestrian sports, the MSU Horsemen’s Association provides a chance to learn and grow alongside other riders.

“You really never stop learning.

You always have someone with a different experience to help solve the problem,” environmental economics junior Sara Savoia said.

Savoia, who was been showing horses since she was 12, participated in the MSU Horsemen’s Weekend hosted at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education last weekend. There, she continued her growth along with other riders.

The MSU Horsemen’s Association allows students with an equine background to learn about and become involved with Michigan’s horse industry. When the MSU Polo Club was developed, the Horsemen’s Association became an umbrella organization to and liaison between the Polo Club, MSU Equestrian Team, the MSU Horse Judging, and, in 2006, MSU Dressage.

The event began Friday with an exhibition polo scrimmage with the MSU Polo Team. Saturday celebrat-

ed the Horsemen’s third annual used tack sale along with private clinics open to the public to watch, and Sunday the MSU Equestrian Team performed an intercollegiate horse show between 10 different schools.

Trainers and clinicians assist sponsorship for the MSU Horsemen’s Weekend by donating a variety of horses for use thought all events.

Clinicians cater to the needs of the different breeds and disciplines.

Every clinician teaches the equestrian how to solve different or the same problem in a unique way, Savoia said.

Psychology freshmen Megan Snoeyink appreciates the show as her favorite part of the weekend.

“We draw what horses we’re going to ride and do what the announcers say,” she said. “Because it’s Horsemen’s, it’s all based on the riders posture with shoulders back, chin up, looking good and polished.”

The intercollegiate horse show on Sunday begins with each horse rider, at random, drawing a horse to ride.

“With a wide variety of people donating their horses for the day, some horses might be million dollar perfectly trained and others not as much,” Savoia said. “You can’t buy your ride, you could have a bad

horse and be a really good rider, or be an inexperienced rider with a really great horse.”

Not being able to use your own horse levels the playing field,” she added.

Civil engineering senior Veronica Crawley utilizes her fourth year on the Horsemen’s team as assistant captain. “It causes me to be more organized and take charge to be prepared for other big events,” she said.

Journalism freshman Whitney Amelia-Pierce found a second home and family among the large community at MSU. “My team members are my family at MSU. I’ve made best friends, and I’m really excited to spend three more years with the girls on my team.”

Like any form of art expression, Horsemen’s Weekend is about learning and working on weaknesses.

“I came without a ton of show experience,” animal science senior Katherine Walker said after winning first place in her division. “I have improved a ton over the past three years in MSU Horsemen’s. It shows how far I’ve come and improved. I’m still working on getting my legs back and my positioning. Also being more confident and outgoing.”

The MSU Community Music School was filled with excited children as they banged on drums and blew trumpets.

Each child went through every instrument to find one that spoke directly to them.

The school invited Greater Lansing residents to their annual semester open house Sunday.

The school offers a variety of classes and experiences for children who wish to get involved with music.

Throughout the open house, young students took their turns playing different instruments as a part of the school’s “petting zoo.” Children were able to experience each of the sections of a band, from strings to percussion.

The school was founded in 1993 as a nonprofit outreach division for what was at the time MSU’s School of Music. The program has classes and lessons in virtually every instrument and other pro-

It’s been something head coach Suzy Merchant has talked about over and over again.

“They haven’t quit, not one game.”

In the past two press conferences Merchant has expressed how appreciative she is of her team’s hard work.

“It’s been punch after punch, injuries, the departure of Jasmine (Lumpkin). … This team stayed in every fight. It’s not like we lost and were embarrassed about it,” Merchant said.

The seven Spartans, who are healthy and able to be on the court to play, have been on court almost 40 minutes, the entire game’s length.

Sophomore guard Tori Jankoska is one of the players who is on the court almost the full game, if not the whole time.

“We do what we need to do, but coach doesn’t overload us with practices and we’re big on recovery,” Jankoska said.

Another player who has been key to keeping MSU in every game is redshirt sophomore forward Aerial Powers. She has scored double-figure points in all 18 games this season.

“We have to keep our weight up and stay consistent,” Powers said. “We’re not worried about the minutes … (we’ll) stay there until we get the W.” Five of the Spartans’ 12 players are injured or sick with the flu.

Due to those players’ incapability to be active, the team had to borrow senior Kelsey Kuipers from the volleyball team to keep MSU eligible to play. This extra “practice player,” according to Merchant, is just another “insurance policy” to keep the team from getting distracted.

“I hope I don’t need to call her number, not to be mean, but because she’s just a body,” Merchant said. “I say it because I believe wholeheartedly that team will never quit. They have a lot of heart and fight. They’re busting their butts to get through it.”

The men’s basketball team was completely outmatched against No. 13 Maryland Saturday in College Park, losing 75-59. On Monday, head coach Tom Izzo pinned part of the loss on the play of his vets — senior guard Travis Trice, junior guard Denzel Valentine and senior forward Branden Dawson.

The Terrapins made a point to shut down Trice and Valentine, and they succeeded. Trice managed just five points on 2-of-8 shooting with an uncharacteristic four turnovers opposite of one assist. Valentine was better, posting nine points, five assists and six rebounds on 4-of-9 shooting.

Trice and Valentine have been MSU’s two most consistent scorers this season, but Maryland’s size was overwhelming. The guard duo saw very few open looks throughout the game, and MSU’s other shooters were unable to compensate.

“They have tremendous size and that bothered us,” Izzo said. “It bothered us. We talked about being ready to shoot. Trice and Valentine were not ready to shoot and you don’t get another second when there’s 6-foot-10 guys coming at you as perimeter players.”

Dawson’s shooting percentage could have potentially been north of 50 percent had he made the easy shots Maryland’s defense handed to him. That, coupled with MSU’s lack of

perimeter defense and inability to shut down freshman guard Melo Trimble and junior forward Jake Layman, prevented MSU from picking up its first win over a ranked opponent.

“You put those two things together that’s 10 points on the board in the first half so instead of being down four you’re down 10,” Izzo said.

“You’re exactly right. You don’t get to do that on the road. That’s a pretty good team. They got size, they got scorers, they got a point guard that came out of nowhere.”

Not counting Texas Southern, all of MSU’s losses this season have come against ranked teams with a combined record of 64-9. Izzo believes the Spartans have proven they are capable, but the need for a signature win remains pressing.

“I think we know we are good enough to play with some teams, but you have to have your best players play well,” Izzo said.

P resident Ba rac k Oba ma recently proposed, via online video, a nationwide plan that could make community college free “for those who work for it.”

His plan will make the first two years for students who maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average tuition-free.

While students currently enrolled in four-year universities might not be able to take advantage of this attempt to make higher education more accessible and affordable, MSU experts and students have equal compliments and concerns regarding the implications of the decision.

“I think it’s really cool that there is going to be a chance for people who want to work hard in school that can’t afford it to get the opportunity to do so,” O’Berski said. “I think the more people in school getting an education and pursuing their goals and dreams, the better.”

But the old saying rings true — there is no such thing as a free lunch.

The national average for the price of attending community college is more than $3,000 per academic year according to multiple reports. While the tuition will be free for students, someone is going to have to pay for it elsewhere.

The current proposal outlines the federal government will pay for 75 percent of the costs for community college and calls on the states to cover the remaining 25 percent.

Dean of the MSU College of Education Donald Heller wrote an article on Obama’s proposal in The Conversation, an online publication that solicits views

from collegiate experts on variety of topics, and noted some of his reservations about sourcing those dollars.

“We do know that the program is potentially very expensive,” Heller writes in the article. “While the White House estimates the cost at $60 billion over ten years (sic), an estimate by David Leonhardt of the New York Times puts the annual cost at $15 billion.”

Another aspect to consider is the recipients of the program.

The current program is unlike an academic scholarship in that it is accessible for everyone and is not awarded based on need or merit.

Heller also said that the funds should not be limited to community college students,

and should be accessible to students of four-year institutions.

“The country may, in fact, be better off if the $3,800 grant could be used for students attending four-year universities, as well as community colleges,” Heller wrote.

“There is definitive research showing that students who receive bachelor’s degrees receive much larger economic returns, on average, than do those earning associates degrees.”

Barbara Markle. the assistant dean for K-12 outreach in the MSU College of Education, had some similar concerns with the proposal.

“In theory, (the proposal) is a good first step toward higher education,” Markle said.

“Though it has to strongly consider going to people who have the credentials to go onward to higher education and be able to get jobs in places of value to the economy.”

The men’s basketball team has been no stranger to injuries this season. And after a season-ending setback suffered by a key player on a rival team, head coach Tom Izzo is re-evaluating his approach to summer training.

On Sunday, it was announced that Michigan junior guard Caris LeVert will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his left foot during Saturday’s win against Northwestern.

The injury comes eight months after LeVert suffered a stress fracture on the same foot.

Izzo said stress fractures, which result from overuse of a particular bone, were unheard of in his day. He said he might consider giving his players a break during the summer to recover from the grind of the season.

“This summer — boy, it’s scary to say this — but there might be a month off where I say, ‘You guys, I don’t want you here,’” Izzo 12

said. “‘I don’t want you working on your game.’ I have to figure this out. And I think all coaches do.”

College basketball players often have a lot of miles on their bodies as a result of rigorous Amateur Athletic Union schedules in high school. That, along with the fact that many athletes are not two-sport athletes, is a reason for the increase in stress fractures according to Izzo, who played basketball and football when he was a student at Northern Michigan.

“You played two sports,” Izzo said of the norm when he was in college. “You did other things. You didn’t use the same muscles.

You didn’t use the same bones, and you didn’t play at that rate. You played kickball in the grass. You think about a basketball player, even over a football player, the pounding on that every day.”

Bess missed a month with an injury to his right foot in October, and was known as a gym rat coming out of high school.

According to Izzo, Bess’ injury is not a result of lengthy practices, but the wearand-tear on his body.

“You read a story that a guy is working out morning, noon and night,” Izzo said. “I might give my guys a month off, then well, Izzo shouldn’t get paid for that month because nobody is working.”

Izzo acknowledges that there is no easy solution to figuring out the problem. But he vowed to come up with a solution. And the answer could be as simple as giving players rest.

“I am going to say, I don’t give a frick what they say anymore,” Izzo said. “I’m going to figure out what is right. I’m going to call coaches, and I’m going to figure it out, but we are. There has been an incredible number of these stress fracture (injuries).”

MSU basketball will try to get back to winning, and with a Wednesday night matchup against Penn State looming, the Spartans should have a great chance to do so.

Penn State (12-6 overall, 0-5 Big Ten) won 12 of its first 13 games, but since entering Big Ten play, the Nittany Lions have dropped five straight.

Head coach Tom Izzo said the game will begin an important stretch for MSU (12-6 overall, 3-2 Big Ten), and Penn State is not to be overlooked.

“A team that you all will think isn’t that good and understandably so if you look at their record,” Izzo said. “If you look through that or watch their games and see the number of games they lead in. It’s 35-33 at Wisconsin and all of sudden they are down 10 at Wisconsin.”

Penn State’s senior guard D.J. Newbill leads the Big Ten with 21.7 points per game, and Izzo called him the best scorer in the conference.

Penn State’s roster is veteran heavy, playing with five seniors and four juniors.

“They’ve got a pretty deep team and definitely an experienced starting five,” Izzo said.

“One that a couple of bad shots here or there or missed shots has been the difference when you’re losing at least three of those five Big Ten games. That will be a challenge because they will be hungry.”

MSU will hope to get senior guard Travis Trice more involved, after he scored just five points in his last outing against Maryland. Junior guard Denzel Valentine was also contained, finishing with nine points. The Terrapins minimized production from two of MSU’s most important offensive threats, but if Penn State tries to replicate that performance, Izzo isn’t worried.

“Every team in America is going to try and shut down the two or three best players,” Izzo said. “That’s no secret, we try to do the same thing.”

Offensively, MSU and Penn State are on different ends of the spectrum. Penn State features a 20-point scorer, but no one else on the team averages double digits. The Nittany Lions also rank 323rd in the nation and second to last in the Big Ten with just 9.8 assists per game.

MSU has three players averaging double figure points, and with 18.0 assists per game, the Spartans rank third in the nation and first in the Big Ten. Wednesday night’s 7 p.m. contest will mark the 400th men’s basketball game at Breslin Center, a number that Izzo has been a part of since the arena opened in 1989.

“We’ve had still one of the best home courts there is,” Izzo said. “But it has its moments when it goes up and down a little bit, probably some of that’s with the team, some of that’s not. But it’s been a great place to play. I still love the fact that the fans are right on top of you, where a lot of these places it’s not that way.”
