Charlie Hebdo attack ignites local debate on free speech, highlights religious prejudice Timeline

In the wake of the polarizing Charlie Hebdo attacks, students and community members have reacted differently to the details surrounding the incident.

The attacks, instigated by Muslim militants, were a reaction to political cartoons published by the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, which depicted the Prophet Muhammad.

Thasin Sardar, the outreach coordinator for community relations for The Islamic Society of Greater Lansing, said many people misinterpret these acts of terrorism as Muslim acts.

“Terrorism has no religion,” Sardar said. “The media has unfairly portrayed the entire faith group. The media should call terrorists what they are, and make no connection with a specific faith.

“We are very worried about the repercussions of this because the media unfortunately has been irresponsible for the actions of few vigilantes,” Sardar added.

For some students, drawing the line between free speech and racism is a tough one.

Hendricks said she knows only a small percent of those who are Muslim are extremist, but many people falsely believe the Muslim faith and terrorism go hand in hand.

Even beyond students, the events surrounding Charlie Hebdo affect alumni as well.

“The Paris events did not directly affect me but they did push me to ensure I am a positive influence on those

around me,” alumna Dua Aldasouqi said in an email. “They remind me that evil exists and can manifest in many forms and we must make sure we are a positive force and cause for change.”

Echoing what others said, Aldasouqi agreed media coverage of the attacks have not been accurate in the portrayal of Muslims.

For Aldasouqi, Charlie Hebdo crossed the line of what she would consider an appropriate use of free speech.

“I believe the cartoons were in poor taste considering the very charged political situation in France including a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment,” she said. “I find them offensive in the same way that I would find anti-American cartoons offensive or cartoons insulting my parents or myself. I also equally believe that violence is not the solution.”

In celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., MSU students and faculty held a leadership conference named in his honor Monday in the Union Ballroom.

MSU community members and high school students who attend low-income or at-risk schools were invited.

Alumna Dakota Riehl graduated from MSU’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities and is now the public relations chair of the conference.

Riehl said the point of the

conference was to bring a sense of activism to campus, share ideas on inclusive groups and create dynamic communities.

“We’re really passionate about bringing students who might not have the information or supplies they need to go to college,” Riehl said.

At the conference, students were informed of what applying to MSU entails. They also attended workshops focusing on social injustice in America.

Many workshops were led by students and campus organizations, such as the MSU Black Student Alliance.

our leaders on campus to show what their goals are and display their leadership,” Riehl said. “I want everyone to know that these are incredibly passionate and successful students who are working to make MSU an inclusive and better community.”

Before participants departed for the march, keynote speaker and Vice President of the Office of Student Affairs and Services Denise Maybank shared words of wisdom to students and faculty. President of MSU’s Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and journalism senior Tyler Clifford, also spoke about why students should continue to march.

“Let love drive you, because life isn’t about you,” Clifford said. “Life is in fact about how you affect everyone around you.”

Beaumont Tower. The march featured special guest Henry James Thomas, who was one of the original Freedom Riders in 1961.

“We had an integrated movement, whites of good will stood with us,” Thomas said during the march. “I really would love to see more of the white students joining you as well.”

He also shared an experience where himself and other riders were held on a bus and were almost burned alive by members of the Ku Klux Klan. The flames ignited the fuel tank at back of the bus and blew the doors out, allowing the riders to escape.

“I’m so happy that you don’t have to fight those battles now, but the ones I’ve told you about, you have to fight them,” Thomas said. “We’ve come a long way, but as the good doctor said, ‘not quite enough.’”

MSU professor’s letter to black students resonated across US, academia The open letter was signed by more than 1,100 black faculty members in an emotional display of solidarity

As the semester drew to a close last fall, student activity on campus did just the opposite. From protests led by the MSU Black Student Alliance in response to the killing of Michael Brown, which shut down Grand River Avenue, to the MSU-facilitated “After Ferguson Town Hall,” creative writing professor Rae Paris watched it all unfold.

She thought the town hall was “wonderful,” but as a black faculty member, was troubled by certain aspects of the event, where white students told stories that “needed more complication and nuance.”

“At the same time, a young black student came into my office and broke down. It won’t be the first time, it won’t be the last,” Paris said. “I was thinking about him and just thinking about the stories that we all talk about with each other.”

Paris and her colleagues agreed a statement needed to be made. Something that encapsulated the unique bond many black faculty and students share, in part due to being part of an underrepresented population in predominantly white institutions.

Out of that came “An Open Letter of Love to Black Students: #BlackLivesMatter,” a post on her blog, Black Space. The letter is filled with emotional language, expressing the desire of black faculty to see black students succeed, in an environment where black student retention rates are significantly lower than those of their white peers.

“In our mostly white classrooms we work with some of you, you who tell us other professors don’t see, don’t hear you,” the letter read. “You, who come to our offices with stories of erasure that make you break down. They don’t see me, you say. They don’t hear me. We know and don’t know how to hold your tears.”

Paris first read the letter aloud during a Black Student Alliance-led march on Dec. 6, as protesters gathered under Beaumont Tower. She then posted the letter online Dec. 8, with the conclusion “We see you. We hear you. We love you,” and an invitation for other black faculty to sign the letter.

Shortly after, history professor and Paris’ colleague Jessica Marie Johnson passed the letter along to blogs, publications, online activists and other academics, where the letter spread like wildfire.

“Within two hours, I think we had 200 names,” Johnson said.

Since then, the letter has gained more than 1,100 signatures, a list of black faculty members at universities in every corner of the U.S. and even in other countries. Thirty-six faculty members at MSU signed the letter. Every school in the Big Ten is represented, along with the entire Ivy League.

Paris said the letter speaks to the experience of black students and faculty on a fundamental level, which helped it resonate so widely.

“It’s connected to these struggles that have been happening for a very long time,” Paris said.

She hopes the letter inspires more serious dialogue within academic institutions.

“I hope that departments have real conversations that go beyond ‘we value diversity,’” Paris said.

LETTER: Students deserve to choose their graduation speaker Typically graduation is set for fulfilled dreams, new beginnings and inspiring send-offs.

But MSU’s most recent graduation was shrouded with controversy.

The tension was not for poor graduation rates or foreboding job markets, rather the man on the podium speaking to MSU graduates.

December commencement speaker George Will was criticized for his position on sexual assault in a column in The Washington Post this past June.

A lthough the universit y scheduled Will to speak at commencement before the column, President Simon upheld his position as speaker against protest from student organizations including ASMSU. If the administration is willing to bet — and pay $47,500 — on their own public perception and student loyalty on

one speaker, then why not let students choose the speaker?

As a student who is going to pack into the Breslin Center dressed in green robes in four months, I want a say in who will have the last instructional words in my Spartan career.

Here’s my vote: Sam Raimi.

The director of the cult classic Evil Dead series and original Spider-Man trilogy grew up in Detroit and went to MSU for two years. Raimi is a discreet yet powerful figure in both special effects and niche storytelling.

He has no Tw it ter and chooses his projects carefully, spending most of the time behind the scenes as a producer where he has inf luenced 50 films and TV series, according to the Internet Movie Database.

During his time in East Lansing, Raimi started a film club in order to screen his Super-8

films on campus for $1.50. He would sit in the audience to see and hear the reactions from his work.

“And they just didn’t like them,” Raimi said in a recent interview on the Nerdist Podcast. “But eventually we cut out literally all the parts that didn’t work and we’d end up with shorts that had a joke here that worked, they’d like a little piece of action, and they liked ending.”

I want to hear how Raimi has persevered through the unknown and penniless years of his 20s to create some of the most influential works in the superhero and horror genres.

He never earned his degree, so give him an honorary one.

I’d rather hear from a former Spartan that I can identify with than an outsider whose opinions alienate us.

Despite “The Interview,” conditions in North Korea are no laughing matter

Ever since the release date for “The Interview” was announced last year, North Korea has been featured prominently in the news. When news broke about the Sony hack, it was almost impossible to find a media outlet that didn’t have something to say about “the hermit kingdom.”

Jokes and political cartoons at the expense of the country have followed, with the recent Golden Globes parody by Margaret Cho as a North Korean general only adding fuel to the fire.

But let’s be clear on something: North Korea is not a joke.

Kim Jong-un’s babyish face and constant threats of terrorism against the United States often cause the Western world to imagine him as a comical toddler having a temper tantrum.

This image is perpetuated frequently by political cartoonists who overemphasize Kim’s chubby cheeks. While such images may seem harmless to those of us who view North Korea from the outside, they are incredibly damaging to our perception of the country as a whole.

It bears repeating that North Korea is a very different world than the one we are familiar with in the United States. This is not a country where comedic jabs at government officials are taken with a grain of salt. This is a country where hundreds of thousands of citizens died of starvation in the 1990s because of a famine caused by an inept government.

North Korea has the worst track record of national human rights abuses in the entire world.

Public executions for petty crimes, internment and re-education camps, arbitrary prison sentences and malnutrition are fears every North Korean citizen faces.

There is no freedom of speech, press or religion. North Korean citizens do not have the choice of viewing a cheap comedy made at the expense of their leader, because if caught doing so, a prison sentence — or worse — awaits them.

In December, the United Nations convened to review these human rights abuses for the first time in history. This decision also marked the first time the U.N. looked into human rights abuses of any specific country. Several North Korean prison camp survivors and former guards were present to share their nightmarish stories with the council. North Korean officials were notably absent from this meeting.

And "The Interview” takes into consideration none of these factors.

If Seth Rogen cared for more than tasteless humor and money, perhaps he would use his fame and international influence to draw attention to these abuses and look for ways to help North Koreans who suffer at the expense of his success. Instead, the $15 million dollars in online sales during the opening week alone has gone quietly into his and his friends’ pockets, while their lips have remained sealed on the raging controversy the film has created.

Some defendants of the film have claimed that “The Interview” is merely a modern example of Charlie Chaplin’s famous political parody “The Great Dictator.” These claims are erroneous.

Unlike Rogen, Chaplin regretted making the film and said in his 1964 autobiography, “Had I known of the actual horrors of the German concentration camps, I could not have made ‘The Great Dictator;’ I could not have made fun of the homicidal insanity of the Nazis.”

Perhaps, if the world focused on the atrocities in North Korea instead of laughing at cheap jokes, Rogen would feel the same way.

He knew he had to do something, but he didn’t know what.

After journalism senior Tyler Clifford heard there would be no indictment in the Eric Garner case, he was inspired to act on campus. Clifford is president of Zeta Delta, MSU’s chapter Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. and is also involved with NAACP. “I thought it was important to let people know that something needs to change,” Clifford said.

“That there is something that we can do in East Lansing to make sure something like that doesn’t happen here. That was just the start of it.”

Early last December, after what they believed were displays of injustice and police brutality against black males in America, some MSU students took action.

Students went as far as physically lying down in traffic on Grand River Avenue, holding die-ins at the Main Library, and protesting and marching on campus. Whether silent or chanting, these 6

students were determined to be heard.

Clifford said the sole purpose of the marches was to bring awareness of these issues around campus. They wanted to create a voice for the voiceless.

Electrical engineering senior Keyon Clinton said the first thing that comes to mind when he hears “Black Lives Matter” is concern on a local level, pertaining to East Lansing. But he said he does believe that it extends to a national level.

“On a higher level with America, in terms of black human rights and being able to express ourselves through our own culture without being judged or criticized because it’s different from other cultures,” Clinton said.

Importance on campus Activism within a university’s student body isn’t something new.

“The majority of the great leaders we read about were college students,” Clinton said. “It’s up to us as leaders to understand we hold the power to create change, but we have (to be) conTuesday, JANUA rY 2 0, 2 01 5

gruent with our efforts.”

After die-ins in the Main Library during finals week and lie-ins on Grand River Avenue during a basketball game, some people may have felt the protests were an inconvenience because of the huge public disturbances to studying and driving.

“In order to be successful in a protest and create change, you have to inconvenience others,” Clifford said.

These events relate back to the famous Oklahoma City and Greensboro sit-ins that were held by activists in the 1960s. Sit-ins were a tactic used by nonviolent students against segregation.

“Student mobilization and activism have always been prevalent in collegiate spaces,” journalism senior and Black Student Alliance president Rashad Timmons said. “Those things have always propelled the social, political and academic sphere of universities.”

Receiving the message For some people, when they hear or see the message “Black Lives Matter” they may think these

words are synonymous with “Only Black Lives Matter.”

Clinton said this is the wrong approach.

“There’s never been anywhere in history ... just one race benefiting from a revolution. The only way we can rise and unite and create solidarity is if we come together and do it as one.”

Clinton is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He said he is trying to pursue what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. proposed to us — all races coming together.

“I think sometimes these movements are a disadvantage because we’re speaking out of rage and emotion as opposed to logic and rationality,” Clinton said. “So once we learn to approach our issues and concerns in a positive reinforcement than we can understand that we need allies to help us reach those goals. And with their culture we have to accept them as much as we want them to accept us.”

Clinton also said that from his viewpoint, it is more difficult for the movement of Black

Lives Matter to be understood on campus then at home.

Hailing from his hometown of Detroit, Clinton said everyone is going through the same struggle, as opposed to MSU where it is a very diverse community. That diversity is great, he said, but it can have its pros and cons.

“Some of the cons being other students don’t understand the privilege they have just by being Caucasian or another race,” Clinton said. “Some prejudices that we have to deal with and the adversity we have to overcome to get just as far.”

“Also, when you look at (the) administration and who holds the power and how much they are listening to the students and actually having their hands-on as opposed to just listening.

I think that’s why it’s a bit harder,” he said.

The point of the letter was to build solidarity with the nationwide concern for what is happening with regard to the hardships young black students, and black males in particular, face.

“It’s very unfortunate that we have to write letters like this once in a while to draw attention to the fact that black lives matter and African lives matter — all lives matter,” Ogundimu said.

“All human rights matter, we shouldn’t have to draw attention to these problems.”

Ogundimu also said people of all races and origins should step up to show support for the Black Lives Matter cause.

“It shouldn’t just be black people signing letters today, it should be everybody,” Ogundimu

said. “We should all demonstrate this kind of solidarity and sensitivity. So it really pains me when I see this kind of division.”

Ogundimu also said it’s unfortunate that a law enforcement and judicial process we all count on to ensure that justice is rendered might instill fear in some situations.

“Any one of us can be victims and that’s unfortunate,” Ogundimu said. “It shouldn’t happen in America, but that’s why we have to draw attention to these issues by writing a letter that raises these concerns.”

Moving forward Sociology and journalism senior Kenya Abbott Jr. is a part of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and involved in the department of African American and African studies. Abbott said the movements on campus are a source of information.

Abbott added she would like for students from many other movements to consolidate.

“Something I would like to see is a proactive stance of students,” Abbott said. “One thing that I do notice is a lot of students fighting for something or some type of social justice issue that matters to them. From an MSU perspective I would like to see students coming together and showing how these different issues affect all the same thing.”

meetings would set a foundation of understanding for each to understand the other’s perspective.

Clinton said he is in the process of making connections with an organization in Lansing that holds town hall meetings so they and MSU students can all be inclusive with each other. He said that town hall meetings would be held with

every black organization on campus. That way it won’t be held by a specific organization, but instead, by the student body.

“Not only am I trying to bring the MSU students together, but the Lansing community as well because they have multiple resources that we can benefit from and vise versa,” Clinton said.

Swallowing her nerves, Lyman Briggs sophomore Jaliyah Turner belted out a rendition of “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele to a hushed audience of about 100 people Saturday night as part of the annual “Speaking Like King” poetry slam held at the International Center.

The University Activities Board and Project 60/50 hosted the poetry slam, which consisted of poetry by the New York based poetry performance group Mayhem Poets, during which students had the opportunity to take the stage for an open mic between sets.

Addressing racia l stereot y pes, self-discovery and life’s anguishes, The Mayhem Poets look to open a dialogue they believe is too often closeted.

“We will throw some thoughts out there to open up the floor for discussion and try to live as examples of breaks in that stereotype, if there is one that exists,” Mayhem Poets member Mikumari Caiyhe said.

In an attempt to disprove the stereotype that poetry is often uneventful, Mayhem Poets member Mason Granger said he believes the group’s exciting performance helps to make the experience an engaging one.

“The fact that we’re doing what we

do and saying what we say in the style, and multiple styles, that we do use in one show is like showing poetry doesn’t have to be one thing, it can be that with a twist,” Granger said. “By doing it we don’t have to directly address we’re breaking stereotypes with our style.”

The event not only featured The Mayhem Poets, but opened the floor to students willing to share their voices.

Surprised that it was an open mic, sophomore Jaliyah Turner was quick to put her name on the list.

“I love poetry... It’s just something that gets my attention instantly,” Turner said. “I didn’t know there would be an open mic part of the poetry slam.

When I found out I decided to sign up last minute because I love singing.”

Aside from song covers, students took this opportunity to express their thoughts on religion, race and current issues. Pre-nursing sophomore Vincent Gannon-Piacentini was inspired to perform by a number of racial issues that have been highlighted in the news.

On stage, Gannon-Piacentini said he hoped to encourage others to keep an open mind and express themselves.

“Everyday events inspire me, just whatever is on my mind I like to put into writing,” Gannon-Piacentini said.

“Since racial conflict has been all over the news, it really made me think about it and write about it.”

Annual concert in honor of MLK sought to carry on his lessons A cappella group Take 6 performed at the MSU Auditorium on Sunday as part of the MSU College of Music’s annual “Jazz: Spirituals, Prayer and Protest Concert”

Heads were nodding, hands were clapping, arms were raised and shouts roared as College of Music Dean James Forger and jazz professor Rodney Whitaker approached the microphone to address contemporary issues in light of Martin Luther King Jr.‘s memory.

For the past 15 years, the MSU College of Music has hosted a concert for students and community alike in honor of King.

On Sunday in the Fairchild Theatre, the “Jazz: Spirituals, Prayer and Protest Concert” included highly acclaimed a cappella group Take 6.

The most awarded vocal group in history, Take 6 has been around since 1980. They attribute their success to faith, friendship, respect and love of music.

These are all qualities Forger said he hoped to inspire in the audience.

Forger said the Martin Luther King Jr. tribute concert began as a way to incorporate music more fully into the social fabric of the university.

“One of the best ways to do that was to use it as a vehicle to highlight and to celebrate the accomplishments, the struggles and the issues raised by the great Martin Luther King,” Forger said.

He said it is important for the university to continue doing the concert year after year because the issues that King raised are ever present. Forger said it is a small step in trying to correct a society that is still full of imperfections and troubles.

“We live in a world and in a country that is deeply divided on many issues, and it’s always a positive thing to address those issues and to think about them and try to do better in each successive year,” Forger said.

He said while the main purpose of the concert is to honor and celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., it also presents the opportunity for individual reflection on ways to make this a better life, a better university, a better country and a better world.

“I think there is a great and powerful connection between jazz music and some of the

struggles people have suffered over the years,” Forger said.

Forger said he is proud to see the students and faculty raise these issues in such an effective and artistic way.

“I’m very proud of my colleagues and the students who take an active role in working with the community together to try and develop some unity, and to try to in an artistic and powerful way address

some important issues which unfortunately still exist,” Forger said.

Biochemistry and molecular biology senior Betsy Mappilaparampil said the concert brought people together to honor a truly great man who left an amazing legacy.

“Whenever there is a gathering of people who share the same core beliefs, those people become united in a unique way,”

Mappilaparampil said.

She said the concert got her thinking about the civil rights issues that surfaced this year, and how change needs to arrive swiftly in the nation.

“To me, honoring Martin Luther King means to live life in the legacy that he left — that is, to treat every person humanely, no matter what race, gender or sexuality,” Mappilaparampil said.

Blue Man Group brings interactive performance to Wharton Center

Blue Man Group took over Wharton Center this past weekend, bringing with them a vibrant barrage of colors, bright lights and loud music.

Blue Man Group is comprised of three men painted blue along with various musical instruments and musicians.

The group perform various nonverbal skits, utilizing props such as gigantic tablets, paint balls and even Twinkies. Meanwhile, musicians play upbeat music in the background.

Not only is the show colorful and lively, it’s also interactive. Audience members are brought onstage at various times to participate in the skits.

One skit involved an audience member, who was given a thick paint suit and helmet to wear, getting painted backstage.

He was then hung upside down and gently pushed against a gigantic blank can-

vas in order to create a painting, which he was able to keep. Audience members were allowed to witness this process because of the many onstage screens.

There were also scenarios when attendees were encouraged to stand up and dance along to the tunes as the group’s various musicians played.

Terry Tungjunyatham, a Chapman stick and zither player in the group, said he was drawn to Blue Man Group by their unique approach to music.

“Even the way they play the instruments and how the music conveys certain messages and feelings is different from any other gig I’ve done,” he said.

Tungjunyatham said the band’s recent gigs have been very well-attended, so he expected a strong turnout at Wharton Center for their five shows.

Theatre design junior Cedrick Libut, who works at Wharton Center as a house supervisor, said 1,821 people were in attendance for Friday’s show.

“Blue Man Group’s really hip, it’s a fun show,” he said.

East Lansing resident Evan Tyler saw the show Friday and said he enjoyed it immensely, particularly the ending. He recommends people go out to see Blue Man Group whenever they have the opportunity to.

MSU alumna Deanna Obhas said there seemed to be an increase in not only student attendance, but family attendance as well.

“We usually have a little bit of an older crowd,” she said. “But I think for the show, a little more students and a lot more families.”

Obhas, who was working at Wharton Center when Blue Man Group performed a few years ago, said the show was a fun variety of performances.

“It’s a little bit of comedy, some of their music and then a nice little thing at the end, which I won’t ruin for anyone who’s going see it. But it’s a pretty fun show,” she said.

Now in his third season in the NBA, former Spartan Draymond “Day Day” Green has made his mark.

The 6-foot-7 forward from Saginaw, Michigan, has perhaps had as great a hand in the Golden State Warriors’ 32-6 start to the season as the star guard duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. His well-rounded game and ability to defend all five positions on the court has helped him become one of the most integral role players in the league.

His stat line isn’t too far off from what he averaged at MSU during his senior season from 2011 to 2012, when he posted 16.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks.

Izzo said he talks to Green regularly and poked fun at him when Green managed to pull down just one rebound in a win against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, calling it “un-Michigan State.”

Green has won fans and coaches over with his passion and leadership, Izzo said he believes Green will become the poster child for playing basketball the right way.

“He just has to continue on the pattern he’s on and I remind him of that every day,” Izzo said. “Don’t get too mad at an official or a coach sometimes. He’s just unbelievable and he stays up so much on our guys and with us. Day Day is a diamond in the rough, and I mean a diamond in a big rough. And he’s a special guy”

Sports MSU hockey falls to fourth in Big Ten standings after series with PSU

A series sweep continues to evade MSU hockey (7-11-2, 1-3-2 Big Ten) this season. After a dramatic shootout victory over Penn State on Friday night, the Nittany Lions handed the Spartans a 5-2 loss on Saturday.

“Disappointing,” head coach Tom Anastos said of the weekend. “We’ve got to play six periods of hockey and we didn’t play six periods of hockey. ” MSU fell back in the Big Ten standings after the weekend, now sitting in fourth place with seven points.

The Spartans will have another chance to make a move this weekend as they have a home-series with the fifth place Ohio State Buckeyes on the slate.

While Anastos wasn’t happy with MSU’s overall performance, some Spartans still managed to find individual success. Junior goaltender

Jake Hildebrand – a native of Butler, Pennsylvania – made 48 saves in the 2-2 tie Friday night. He also stopped all three shootout attempts, allowing senior forward Brent Darnell to secure the extra point with his shootout goal. Even after letting five goals get past him Saturday, Hildebrand still ended up with 35 saves.

The Nittany Lions (11-7-3, 5-2-1 Big Ten) currently sit at the top of the Big Ten standings with 16 points, in part due to averaging over 40 shots on goal per game. PSU’s top forward line of Casey Bailey, Taylor Holstrom and David Goodwin led the way throughout the weekend, combining for five goals and 11 points in two games.

“They were good,” Anastos said of the trio following Saturday’s game.

“They attacked the net hard and played with physicality. I’ll give them credit, they were good.”.

Although there were positives, they fell off rather quickly after that. However, the shortcomings of Saturday

helped to overshadow any successes of the tie Friday. “(Friday’s) game was a draw, and Saturday’s game they were dominated,” Anastos said. “We didn’t put up enough push back, and I’m not happy with that. I’m very disappointed in our effort.

“We got beat in every phase of the game (on Saturday). They dominated the game and they were the way better team,” he said.

Darnell’s five-game point streak came to an end Saturday, after generating an assist on junior forward Ryan Keller’s goal in the first game.

Junior forward and captain Michael Ferrantino added to his team-leading goal total Saturday, potting his ninth of the season late in the first period to give the Spartans their first and last lead of the game.

“From what we’ve seen so far, they kind of are what they were last year,” Ferrantino said before to the weekend series. “A little bit more skilled.”
