Tips from the U.P.: How to avoid the worst crimes against winter

East Lansing has finally received a much anticipated “real winter.” By “real winter,” I mean that the temperatures have at last dropped below freezing and a few inches of snow have successfully stuck to the ground for longer than a 24-hour period.

Now that “real winter” is upon us, it’s becoming painfully obvious how illequipped most of us are in dealing with our yearly descent into cold and darkness. Even for those who have lived in Michigan their entire lives, many still haven’t mastered how to deal with the inevitable Arctic-like conditions that

are so characteristic of our great state.

As someone who spent the majority of her life in the Upper Peninsula, I can say with certainty that there are a number of crimes against winter that people constantly commit.

Living in Marquette, practically the U.P.’s capital city, has ingrained within me a very distinct set of behaviors I adopt whenever the cold comes and the snow falls. I become hyperaware to the ways the people around me violate those behaviors. Some of these mistakes are dangerous, and all of them evoke in me a feeling of shame and maybe even a little bit of schadenfreude.

Automobile-related faux pas seem to be the easiest crimes to commit.

There is an astounding lack of snow tires in the Lower Peninsula. This is made more dangerous by the fact that many cars lack four-wheel drive.

It doesn’t help that the majority of both Upper and Lower Michigan drivers magically forget how to drive as

soon as snow and/or ice first coats the road. Training and previous experience don’t exist — there is only sliding and overcorrection.

The car itself may not even be the problem. Drivers (and the decisions they make) can be the most dangerous component of a vehicle. They seem to forget that clearing a small little square of the windshield before setting off on their trip isn’t quite the same as having a full range of sight. You see them hunched over the steering wheel, peering through maybe a square foot of clear glass surrounded by frost and snow on all sides.

If the windows are frosted over, it’s highly unusual to spot a driver successfully using the defrost system. Instead of pressing a button to solve their troubles, many unfortunates turn their heat up to the point where the frost melts, but the windows fog up and diminish their visibility even more severely. Constantly wiping at the inside of the windshield with the back of a coat

sleeve is the preferred method of dealing with this nuisance, though the area will inevitably fog up again once the driver’s hand has returned to the frigid steering wheel.

But drivers aren’t the only ones who choose the worst solutions to easy problems. There are students tramping through campus wearing sneakers in the dead of winter, cursing their wet cotton socks. It’s apparently a surprise that sneakers aren’t waterproof and that once cotton is wet, it stays wet.

There are those who wear rain boots in the winter, which is almost OK. You might be waterproof, but your feet are still going to freeze if you haven’t layered up on wool socks.

Then there are the guys who wear basketball shorts in the middle of a blizzard. You know who I’m talking about. The guys who are apparently so determined to assert their masculinity that they brave the possibility of frostbite to do so.

There are different degrees to this

type of person. On one end of the spectrum, you have the guy in shorts who has appropriately also layered on a parka and boots. On the other, you have the guy who tromps through the snow to class with sneakers, a hoodie and shorts. That’s it. Maybe, if the temperature dips below zero, they might add a hat. Maybe.

To be sure, it’s exasperating to see these behaviors repeated winter after winter. It’s especially aggravating when the mistakes are made consciously by friends who you have chastised again and again for not clearing their entire windshield before driving or not owning a pair of waterproof shoes.

Many Michiganders simply don’t learn the winter code of conduct without finding themselves in a situation where they’ve totaled a car or risked frostbite. We don’t live in a very forgiving part of the country during the winter, and it would be greatly beneficial for us all to play it safe before we regret not doing so in the first place.

Students will now have another off-campus housing option to consider as they make arrangements for the next school year.

Kincaid Henry Building Group and The Element 903 have partnered up to construct a new mixed-use student housing project at 903 E. Grand River Ave., directly across from the Bogue Street entrance to campus and McDon-

ald’s, near the MSU law and business schools.

“Location is huge,” property director Jon Foster said.

The living complex features two bedroom apartments, each with its own private walk-in closet, European kitchen and full bath.

Foster said The Element 903 will also offer three different packages — a silver, platinum and gold suite, with the silver suite costing $750 a bed.

“Each room is over 1,000 square feet

with granite countertops, 9-foot ceiling and natural light in every room, which is pretty ... unique,” Foster said.

The complex will also be pet friendly, but residents will be limited to one small pet per unit and are not allowed to have “large animals.”

A microwave, dishwasher, stove and oven, washer and dryer, a common area, hard surface flooring and a 24-hour emergency service are other included amenities.

Optional amenities include furni-

ture, trash removal, Internet service and underground parking.

The Element 903 offers year leases and a parent or guardian does not need to be present when the lease is signed.

International students will need their passport and I-20 to sign the lease.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held in October and The Element 903 is now taking applications for fall 2015.

ASMSU lobbies for repeal of keg tag law to make student parties safer

The Associated Students of Michigan State University have announced an effort to make MSU parties safer — by making it easier for students to buy kegs.

ASMSU would like to encourage state legislators this year to repeal the Michigan keg tag law, which requires consumers to register their beer keg purchases with the place of business — a state-issued tag is clipped to the keg and police are able to track its location through the address the purchaser recorded.

The law was created so law enforcement could hold the purchaser accountable if caught providing beer for minors.

Not everyone believes the law is beneficial, though, and ASMSU believes it is negatively affecting students.

ister their kegs, which has made hard liquor more available,” President of ASMSU James Conwell said.

ASMSU believes this increase in availability has created a more dangerous environment for new students attending parties who may not be familiar with alcohol percentages and over-consumption.

Conwell, however, did not have any hard numbers to reinforce whether the keg tag law has increased hard liquor sales. He said ASMSU is looking into data on the topic, but argued that beer is “generally safer to drink.”

“I wouldn’t register a keg even if I was 21, that’s just too much hassle,” prenursing sophomore Hannah Ryba said.

Although the process of registering a keg in store is fairly quick and easy, it requires personal information and holds the purchaser completely accountable.

“You have to give your state ID number,

address and name in order to register the keg,” Spencer Rowe of Jonna’s 2 Go convenience store said. “I would be a little hesitant too, just because I don’t like giving out information like that.”

Although there is no data available on hard liquor sales in East Lansing, at Jonna’s 2 go at least vodka consumption is particularly high.

“I do know that this store sells the most Burnett’s (brand vodka) in the state,” Rowe said.

But this doesn’t mean that East Lansing police are driving around campus on weekends just to find houses where kegs have been registered.

“I was at a keg party last night and there were underage students. The cops came because of noise and just made us pour everything out,” Tiffany Garcia, a nutritional sciences senior said.

Newly renovated Akers dining hall opens after much anticipation Rounding off an expansive renovation campaign launched by Residential and Hospitality Services, Akers dining hall opened this weekend after students living in the hall went without a dining hall or Sparty’s last semester

About 2,100 students were given a warm welcome Sunday evening when the newly renovated Akers dining hall, The Edge, opened for the first time since construction began in May 2014.

The Edge at Akers is the last of seven major renovations since the 2009 RHS Dining Master Plan including Brody Square, Riverwalk Market in Owen Hall, Holden Dining Hall, South Pointe at Case Hall, the Vista at Shaw and Heritage Commons at Landon, Communications Manager of Culinary Services in the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services Jenna Brown said.

“The dining master plan has been an integral part of upgrading the on-campus dining experience,” Communications Manager Kat Cooper said. “This final largescale renovation provides parity to students on the east side of campus, but overall, the plan has given students the variety and flexibility they need to be academically successful.”

The renovations also included the installation of fire alarms in every residence hall room, renovated lounges on each floor and an increased accessibility for stu-

dents with disabilities by installing elevators that open directly to the dining halls.

“The past five years has been a time of renewal for RHS,” Cooper said. “We’ve invested significantly in our residence halls and dining halls in order to help them meet the needs of current and future Spartans.”

Overall students and faculty are pleased with the makeover in East Neighborhood.

“I like the variety,” supply chain freshmen Michelle Rogowski said. “It’s really convenient (how close everything is, especially in East Neighborhood).”

Chef Jason Strotheide describes how the simple change of a typical dining hall ambiance can refresh the attitudes of students.

“The Edge pushes the envelope of food service... meeting the needs of every diet,” he said.

Cellular neuroscience senior Michelle Boyd missed the opportunity to enjoy the newly renovated facilities. Now living in University Village Apartments, Boyd lived in Akers when there was no dining options in the hall.

“I’m glad they’re getting renovated for future students,” she said.

which previously had no dining hall or Sparty’s — more options, as well as adding to the neighborhood overall.

“We believe that the renovations will increases their culinary options and improve East Neighborhood,” Complex Dining Service Manager of East Neighborhood Brenda Nelson said.

The Edge has six food stations featuring different cuisines: The Pit serves smoker-style meats, vegetable entrees and grill items; Tandoori highlights authentic Indian and global cuisine; Sticks & Noodles plates stir-fry and Asian cuisine; Stacks serves subs and deli sandwiches along with Slices which offers pizza and pasta bakes; Sprinkles ends the meal with dessert.

Looking forward, Spartans should still expect to see and hear construction around campus.

“Our next big project will be the redevelopment of the Spartan Village Apartments on the former Michigan State Police Post on the corner of Harrison and Kalamazoo,” Cooper said. “Pending Board of Trustee approval to proceed in June, we anticipate new apartments for student families and single students to open on this site and sometime around 2017.”

Following the marches and protests regarding the events in Ferguson, Missouri,last semester, social relations and policy junior Jocelyn Hines returned to Muskegon, Michigan, determined to bring the same urgency for change to her hometown.

He r work b ega n whe n she approached the pastor of her church, Rev. Anita McCants of Phillip Chapel AME Church, to put together a reclamation march.

Local churches brainstormed to come up with issues they would address during the march, which showed through their signs, embla-

zoned with messages such as “reclaim our families,” “black lives matter” and “breathe life into our city.”

Hines’ motivation to spearhead the Muskegon community’s mobilization about these issues was inspired

by MSU rallies, the high murder rates in the Muskegon area and similar outrage in Cleveland, Ohio, and Staten Island, New York, following the violence and racial tension in Ferguson.

“We need more dialogue around the community,” Hines said. “I thought it would be great to do a march in my own community. I love the city and it has been given a bad reputation and it was time to take charge.”

Social media and letters to local churches helped spread Hines’ pur-

pose. She hoped to gain feedback on other issues affecting residents. Her church held a meeting to decide where the march would go, what neighborhoods they would target and what main concerns would be addressed.

The reclamation march took place Saturday. Participants weaved in and out of residential areas and through intersections and corner stores, guided by police officers, and ended in a rally.

“It created a lot of excitement,” Hines said. “(Residents) didn’t really think we were going to do it with the weather, but we were determined to do it.”

This marks the first of many events to come. Hines said she hopes her church continues to lead more

marches and resource fairs — anything to continue the conversation. “(We’re) just trying to support other people trying to support their cities,” Hines said.

Her church now plans for these events to be monthly. Hines hopes to stay involved when she is home from college over breaks, but hopes her church continues without her. The goal is to get young people involved with their community, according to Hines.

“I’m excited for future events, hoping more people and churches participate and taking in to the next level and make change in government officials and police to create excitement in the city,” Hines said.

It’s been 17 games, and the men’s basketball team still can’t make its mind up.

At times this season, the Spartans have looked like one of the better teams in the country.

They certainly did last week against Indiana, using their rebounding prowess and superior athleticism to bully the Hoosiers at Breslin Center, 70-50.

But other times this season, the Spartans have struggled to the point to where critics have questioned if the team will even qualify for an NCAA Tournament berth.

Close losses against some of the premier programs in college basketball — Kansas, Notre Dame,

Duke — and a loss against a then 2-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference team — Texas Southern — will do that.

Head coach Tom Izzo recognized this team as a team in transition prior to the start of the season.

The departure of Gary Harris and Adreian Payne, former All-Big Ten honorees and first round picks in the 2014 NBA draft, left this year’s team without a bonafide star. Senior forward Branden Dawson, who has had a fantastic season, comes closest to filling that role.

At 12-5 overall, the Spartans have shown the ability to score, defend and rebound adequately enough to be seen as a Big Ten contender. But executing these tasks night in and night out has been the biggest issue.

And this, according to Izzo, is what separates

MSU from the premier teams in the nation.

“It’s not a Michigan State thing, it’s not a Northwestern thing, it’s not a Kentucky thing, it’s a winners thing,” Izzo said. “Winners have to play and compete. We have times we don’t compete the same way and we’ve gotta change some of that.”

Trice and Valentine give the Spartans shooting and playmaking the rest of the roster mostly lacks.

sible for 56.2 percent of MSU’s assist production.

What Trice and Valentine give MSU offensively, Dawson gives them defensively. The heart and soul of the Spartans, Dawson is averaging 11.3 points per game and leads the team with 9.5 rebounds per game.

“Branden makes our jobs a lot easier,” Trice said.

“He’s one of those special guys where his play makes it easier for everybody else on the court, whether it’s rebounding, blocking shots, getting the rebounding and hitting the outlet quick and then beating everybody else down the court.”

The Spartans have struggled to stay healthy.

Freshman guard Javon Bess missed 10 games with a foot injury, Dawson missed three games because of illness and a fractured wrist and sophomore guard Alvin Ellis III missed six games with a sprained ankle. Valentine, junior forward Matt Costello and Trice have also played games less than 100 percent due to illness.

As a result, Izzo is still tinkering with his rotation.

“For us to be great, Trice, Valentine and Dawson have to play pretty damn good every game, but I don’t think that’s any different than last year,”Izzo said. “The difference was, as I told my team, the role players last year were the Trices and Valentines. Right now, we don’t have as good of role players only because of the injury stuff we have gone through with them.”

Searching for consistency The Spartans have been competitive in nearly every game this season. Yet, the losses have piled up.

MSU has faltered down the stretch in key games throughout the season, most recently against thenNo. 12 Maryland in double overtime Dec. 30.

A trend in each loss is an inability to execute plays late in the game, allowing the other team to steal the win.

“I think it’s really just mental for us right now,” Dawson said after the 68-66 loss to Maryland.

“We had the lead toward the end. We have to play smarter, that’s what coach Izzo talks about. Just playing smarter. Knowing how many fouls a guy has and just playing smart.”

Part of the issue can be chalked up to inexperience, as three freshmen and a transfer adjust to the Big Ten grind. The development of the freshmen trio of Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr., Marvin Clark Jr. and Javon Bess could make or break the season.

When MSU is firing on all cylinders, the end result can be exhilarating. Three-pointers are launched with impunity, and the Spartans use their defense to create fast break opportunities.

The half court offense has been a work in progress, but MSU’s ability to run has been very effective thus far.

“In basketball, big defensive plays can lead to an instant turnover,” Izzo said. “A missed shot, if you defend it well, is like a turnover, and you get your running game going out of it. Our guys just can’t figure out that that’s good. They don’t have to run plays. They don’t have to take any time. We can get a shot off in five seconds. I’d be the happiest guy in America if we did that all year long.

But, we do have some issues with our substitution patterns.”

MSU struggled to put away Northwestern on Sunday, but finally managed to do so after a couple of fast break opportunities led to easy points in overtime. The 84-77 win was MSU’s first over-

“With every bad, you learn something, and hopefully you get good at it,” Izzo said. “I think we’ll improve from this but I’d like to see a steady (improvement) — it doesn’t have to be monumental.”

Not panicking yet MSU would like to be better than its current 12-5 record, but Izzo believes there’s still a chance the Spartans have a better season than he initially expected.

There are several more opportunities for a signature win this season, starting with No. 14 Maryland this weekend at College Park. MSU’s performance against Northwestern left a sour taste in the mouths of both players and coaches.

“We need to work our way back up,” Izzo said Sunday.

“I can’t think of a better game to try to do that in than

the Maryland game. Somebody told me they’re naming the court after Gary Williams, or they’re doing something there, so it should be a fun time.”

A three-game winning streak has solidified MSU’s place in the Big Ten standings, and a tournament berth now looks closer to a certainty. But the need to defeat a top-25 team remains pressing.

In order for MSU to take the next step, they will have to define their identity. It starts with consistent defense and rebounding.

“We’re gonna have to realize that our identity at Michigan State – or better yet, the identity of 95 percent of successful programs, Wisconsin, Duke, Kentucky, Arizona, just to name a few — you’ve got to defend, you’ve got to rebound,” Izzo said. “And then hopefully if you run, you score easier points.”

In the wake of student outrage toward George Will’s fall commencement speech, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon released a statement that addressed the concerns of students opposed to his appearance, and in a statement, announced a town hall meeting “as early as possible next semester to allow members of the campus community to share thoughts following this weekend’s commencement.”

Now, as students filter back onto campus and spring semester begins, it appears plans for the meeting have yet to be made. MSU spokesman Jason Cody said the Sexual Assault Task Force must first meet to determine a date for the meeting.

“The main priority is getting the task force assembled to schedule the meeting ... once this is done anyone who wants to attend can,” Cody said.

MSU students were furious last month at the university’s decision to invite Washington Post columnist George Will to speak at the fall commencement ceremony. Many

believed Will’s past comments on sexual assault on college campuses sparked controversy on a campus where sexual assault is already a pressing issue, following a federal investigation of the university’s Title IX compliance.

In a column that he wrote for the Washington post on June 6, 2014, Will wrote that universities are making victimhood into a “coveted status that confers privileges, (causing) victims (to) proliferate.”

These statements angered students who believed that by allowing Will to speak, the university was endorsing the statements.

Although Simon made it clear in her statement that the university does not endorse Will’s statements about sexual assault, students protested the decision to honor Will in various ways, including hosting sitins, signing petitions and even establishing an alternative graduation ceremony for graduating seniors who were survivors of sexual assault or opposed to Will’s presence at the ceremony.

Students remain dissatisfied that the university allowed Will to speak,

and believe that although the meeting is a nice effort, real success will be determined by whether or not it has lasting impacts to prevent something like this from happening again.

“At least they aren’t ignoring it, they’re doing something,” Emma Stark, a Japanese and Residential College in the Arts and Humanities sophomore said. “I don know if they’re necessarily acknowledging that they messed up, but maybe this is a gateway to prevent future mess-ups.”

Although Stark seemed optimistic about the impact that the meeting could have, other students were not impressed by the administration’s effort. Philosophy junior Dilyn Corner was unimpressed with Simon’s proposed resolution.

“I get that he was booked well before the statements were made, but I think that we should have looked into it more and I think that this town hall should have been held prior,” Corner said.

The task force is aiming to use the meeting as a jumping-off point for a larger campus-wide dialogue about the seriousness of sexual assault.

While most students kicked back by returning home over break, the MSU chapter of the Preprofessional Society for Health Careers of Alpha Epsilon Delta immersed themselves in a new culture while assisting at clinics all over the Dominican Republic.

Twenty-five students flew abroad from Dec. 13 to Dec.20 in the hope of finding new experiences and opportunities to give back to the less fortunate.

“The purpose of this trip is to provide free medical care to areas in the D.R. with barriers to accessing healthcare,” said Sasha Collins, genomics and molecular genetics senior and the group’s leader.

“We are often the only healthcare the people in these barrios receive.”

The team broke up into even smaller groups before going to different barrios, which are communities in the Domin-

ican Republic, for clinical work. The first of the four groups is triage, which Collins said takes patient medical history.

The next group is shadowing. Students shadow the doctors to familiarize themselves with parasites and skin infections unique to the country. Collins said patients are treated for fresh wounds and infected bites and are introduced to health issues prevalent in that area.

The clinics draw large crowds which is why the third group, crowd control, is vital. Collins said the team uses that time to talk to patients in line and educate them about health.

The final group was pharmacy, where patients bring their prescription slips to be filled and labeled in Spanish with directions on how to take them. Each prescription is checked by a nurse and translator.

Each day began at 6:45 a.m. for breakfast and didn’t end until around midday. They attended to an average of 150

patients each workday. Collins said the team traveled up to two hours from their base in San Juan de la Maguana to get to each barrio.

The language barrier between two countries did act as a hurdle for the team.

However, translators made the language barrier less of a hindrance during their stay.

“We were lucky enough to have helpful doctors and translators that both translated and taught us the language,” neuroscience and human biology senior Megha Patel said.

While uncertainty is something to be expected when traveling to a foreign country, the students were welcomed by the citizens of the Dominican Republic and the patients they cared for during their stay.

“The atmosphere in the Dominican Republic is one of the reasons I have gone back three times. I absolutely love it,” human biology senior Lauren Cooke said.

While some love to travel, few people are willing to devote two years of their life to volunteering in a foreign country.

On Jan. 12, MSU alumna Jacqueline Mullen hopped on a plane to do exactly that — she will be traveling to Morocco to work with children as a Peace Corps youth development volunteer.

Peace Corps Midwest Regional Public Affairs Mullen Specialist Heather Mangan said Peace Corps is all about making a difference. Volunteers travel to different countries to help out those in need and then bring the traditions, lessons and information they learned back to their home in U.S. “(Volunteers) come out with advanced skills, a whole new perspective and new knowledge,” Mangan said.

Mullen, who studied comparative cultures and politics, said her love of traveling and learning inspired her to join Peace Corps.

“Peace Corps is the best option for me since it lets me use skills I have and they pay for everything,” she said.

Mangan said some benefits of joining Peace Corps include travel expenses being paid for, medical care and a monthly allowance to cover their funds during their stay. Furthermore, there are Fellows programs at various universities where volunteers can have their tuition reduced or covered because of their work with the organization.

It’s a great opportunity for people who love to travel, but still a massive undertaking nonetheless.

Mullen, who has participated in a couple of study abroad programs before, said she has never done anything quite like this.

“It’s a really big change to go somewhere and commit over two years of your life to something,” she said. “I feel nervous, I feel scared, I feel so many different (emotions). I basically feel everything.”

Mullen said she doesn’t expect to know very much, but she anticipates she will learn quickly. One of her main goals is to learn as much as possible in the first few months, which will be spent training in the language and culture of Morocco.

Her other goals include making as many friends as possible and potentially setting up a pen pal system between her old elementary school and the children she’ll be working with.

While not everyone can commit two years of their life to volunteering, Mullen said she believes it’s important for young adults to travel.

“I know Peace Corps isn’t for everyone,” she said. “It’s important for people to realize there’s a world outside their country.”

Sports Izzo disappointed after another rough finish, calls MSU a ‘pretty-boy team’ MSU managed to beat Northwestern in overtime on Sunday, picking up its third consecutive conference win. But Tom Izzo criticized the team’s rebounding, defense and shot choices and said the Wildcats deserved the win

The men’s basketball team picked up its third consecutive conference win Sunday against Northwestern, but Izzo was far from happy with MSU’s performance.

MSU (12-5 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) had an uneven effort against the Wildcats, coming up short through the first 40 minutes before defeating Northwestern 84-77 in overtime.

The Spartans led by as many as 11 in the second half, but Northwestern freshman forward Vic Law drained a 3-pointer with 3:05 remaining to tie the game at 68. MSU needed a pair of clutch free throws from junior forward Denzel Valentine to tie the game at 72 and force overtime.

Although the game ended up becoming MSU’s

first overtime win of the season, head coach Tom Izzo said Northwestern deserved to win.

“There hasn’t been many times in my career I’ve complained about shot selection and my team, we took a couple of ridiculous shots today,” Izzo said after the game on Sunday. “That was totally, to me it’s disrespectful. Not to me, not even to our players. I think it’s disrespectful to the other team. It’s like, ‘I can just do this.’

That team punched us in the mouth. That team deserved to win the game. We just won.”

MSU led the Wildcats by 14 early in the first half before allowing a Northwestern run that gave the Wildcats the lead with 3:22 left. The first half ended with the score tied at 40.

“We’ve been an incredible team at rebounding and defending for the 20 years I’ve been here. This team wanted to be a little more of a pretty-boy team and it’s cost us a couple times,”

“We defended and rebounded and we ran. We score points at ease. We’re up nine, we’re up 14, we’re playing well. Then I thought we decided to go one on one.”

Valentine interpreted Izzo’s description as MSU being a “pretty-boy team” to mean they played soft.

“At the end of the game we didn’t get the rebound when we needed to or play defense when we needed to,” Valentine said. “That’s what he means by that.”

We got the job done and we won, but we shouldn’t have been in this position anyway, so that’s why we’re so mad,” he said.

The Spartans have failed to finish games adequately several times this season, and Izzo managed to find a silver lining on Sunday. Three times this season, the men’s basketball team

came up short in overtime games. On Sunday, the Spartans managed a different outcome.

“We’re back in the Big Ten race and I’m going to look at it as we found a way to win,” Izzo said.

“We haven’t done that a lot this year.”

Solely looking at its record, MSU hockey (7-10-1 overall, 1-2-1 Big Ten) had a promising stretch of games during the holiday break. In four games played, the Spartans came back to campus boasting a 3-1 record over that stretch.

It is the one loss, however, that might stick with MSU the most moving forward, for better or worse. Following an offensive outburst in a 6-4 win over Clarkson on Dec. 14, MSU entered the Great Lakes Invitational looking to bring home its 13th GLI title.

Meeting for the third time of the season, MSU dispatched Ferris State in the first game by a score of 2-0 behind junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand’s 31-save shutout. Hildebrand, who was solid throughout the

tournament stopping 57-of-60 shots on goal, earned his first shutout of the season and fifth as a Spartan.

The win set up a meeting between the Spartans and Wolverines in the 50th annual GLI title game. The shorthanded U-M jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the game, and the Spartans could only cut the deficit in half, losing 2-1.

“I thought our conditioning was very strong,” head coach Tom Anastos said after playing two games in less than 24 hours. “As the game went on, we got even stronger. We had nervous energy at the beginning of the game which I thought negatively impacted us.”

Even after MSU settled down and started to play their game, U-M still made the Spartans work for every opportunity they got. Junior goaltender

Steve Racine was solid in the tournament. Racine stopped 31 of 32 shots against the Spartans and 71-of-73 in the tournament, earning him tournament MVP honors.

Also earning honors for the tournament was Spartan sophomore defenseman Rhett Holland, who was named to the all-tournament team after registering his first goal at MSU to go along with an assist in MSU’s two games.

“I didn’t even know it was an award until after (the game),” Holland said after the loss to U-M. “It’s nice to win but I’m still sick to my stomach that we’re sitting right here.”

Many of the Spartans felt a similar sentiment following the loss to one of their biggest rivals in one of college hockey’s biggest regular season tournaments.

of it,” junior captain Michael Ferrantino said. “Obviously, to come up short stings and I think that feeling is going to burn with us for a little bit.”

While a win would have helped launch the Spartans’ second half of the season, MSU still needs to learn from its experience moving forward.

“You have to learn lessons.

You learn lessons from success and you learn lessons from failure,” Anastos said. “We had a chance to win a little hardware (the MacInnes Trophy)

and we didn’t do enough to get that done.”

He said, “It’s all our conference schedule now, so there’s lots to play for. We know that we can compete with all the teams we’re playing with. We’re going to be in tough environments, but we’ve played that in our nonconference schedule and now we’ve played in the tournament format. From an experience perspective, we’ve gained lots ... we just left a little bit on the table that we didn’t want to leave.”

Spartans to watch going into the rest of the Big Ten season

Travis Trice — senior guard #20 Trice is a senior captain who is starting to take things into his own hands. As the floor general, he’s averaging a team-high 14.3 points and 6.1 assists per game, and he can knock down shots from NBA range if he needs to. On Jan. 8, he torched Iowa with seven 3-pointers and carried his team to an early, yet crucial Big Ten win. Trice has taken tremendous care of the ball en route to a 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Bryn Forbes — junior guard #5 Forbes is a sharpshooting junior transfer from Cleveland State. A high school teammate of Denzel Valentine, Forbes is shooting 46.8 percent from 3-point range this year. He is a terrific asset to have when teams matchup in a zone defensively, something teams across the Big Ten have toyed with this year. Defensively, Izzo would still like to see him improve. At times he is a liability on the court, and if he can sure up his defensive play, he will be an important factor in MSU’s 12

Denzel Valentine — junior guard #45 A captain, Valentine has been an all-around force on the floor. After spending much of the offseason working on his shot, his numbers have jumped significantly this year. His field goal percentage has jumped five percent (45.0) and his 3-point efficiency has increased almost 10 percent (46.2).

Although MSU’s roster has been faced with injuries and illnesses over the past two seasons, Valentine is the one constant, having started every game in that span. With that being said, Valentine has been under the weather recently, and against Northwestern, Izzo said that Valentine looked “out of it.”

Branden Dawson — senior guard/ forward #22 Dawson decided to pass on the NBA last season and come back for his senior year, and so far, we’ve seen flashes of a future pro. His authoritative dunks have livened crowds, his tenacious defense has already contained some of the Big Tuesday, JANUA RY 1 3, 2 01 5

Ten’s best players and his individual rebounding numbers are tops in the league. Dawson scored his 1,000th career point against Eastern Michigan but injured his left wrist in the same game.

He missed two games with the injury and has since been playing with a brace. According to Dawson, the brace will be off for this Saturday’s rematch with Maryland. As the season progresses, Dawson will need to improve at the free-throw line, where he is currently shooting just 37.5 percent.

Gavin Schilling — sophomore forward #34 Schilling’s athleticism and raw talent were evident throughout his freshman year, but this season he’s putting the pieces together. He looks much more comfortable on the court and has even developed a nice jump hook shot in the post. He is also second in the Big Ten in field goal percentage, shooting just under 68 percent.

One of MSU’s largest concerns this year is free throw shooting, and Schilling is contributing to this problem. The big man is shooting just 46.5 percent from the line.

Matt Costello — junior forward #10 Costello was a starter at the beginning of the season, but after getting into early foul trouble in games, Izzo decided to bring him off the bench.

Costello has embraced his role, and throughout December he scored in double figures in five straight games, including a career-high 17 points in a loss to Texas Southern. Izzo also said that Costello looked “out of it” against Northwestern and said that the junior would be tested for illness.

Marvin Clark Jr. — freshman forward #0 (not pictured) Izzo called Clark the strongest player on the team before the season, and at times his strength and athleticism have been on full display. In the upset loss to Texas Southern, Clark did not play in the second half because he wasn’t “dialed in” and lacked attentiveness, said Izzo. After the benching, he responded with 12 points in a victory against The Citadel. His minutes have been down since the Big Ten season began, but he is always a three-point threat on the floor.
