What’s in your garden?

Your mind is a garden, Your thoughts are the seeds.

You can grow flowers or You can grow weeds.

In 4-H, we spend a lot of time working on and talking about growth in our youth.

Growth in community service, growth in critical thinking, growth in making good decisions.

Providing opportunities to learn by doing is an important goal of 4-H. Learning includes new skills, improving on existing skills, and evaluating our success or failures to adjust for the next learning opportunity.

We believe it’s always the perfect time to celebrate successes.

Some are big successes such as accomplishing a Key Award, which is the highest achievement recognition awarded to a 4-H member.

It may involve smaller – but just as relevant – successes: • Was a 4-H member able to look a judge in the eye and talk about their project this year?

• Did a recipe that they have practiced over and over pay

off in a trip to the State Fair or was it time to reevaluate and work on a different recipe?

• Did a 4-H member discover that a project really wasn’t their focus, even if the rest of their family is involved with it?

• Did they step up and take on a role in their club? Did they make new friends at camp or an activity?

These are all important successes to celebrate!

We aren’t going to be successful at everything we do every time.

Learning to gracefully and graciously listen and learn to improve is an important life skill. It starts with an example set by adults and is the reason that volunteers are such an important part of 4-H. As adults, are we examples of setting priorities, working hard, and listening fairly when given feedback? Do we set an example of perseverance when things don’t go as smoothly as we’d like? Do we set an example of work ethic to be better tomorrow or an example of cutting corners with a singular focus to win?

ture for young people to be successful: Strong work ethic will always be in vogue.

As an employer myself, I will always hire a team member with a strong work ethic over a worker without one.

I’ll always hire a person with self-discipline over a person without it. I’ll always hire a person with a passionate attitude for our mission vs. a person without it. Grit will always be great.

Work ethic supplies a person with a tenacity they’ll need to complete a not-so-glitzy task. It provides a worker with a sense of responsibility they need to feel a sense of “ownership” on the job, serving over and above what the job description demanded.

Work ethic offers the energy needed to finish what we start, just because it needs to be done, not because we want to post a pic on Instagram.

What seeds are we growing in our own life?

What seeds are we nurturing in the heads, hearts and hands of the young people around us? Hopefully, we have planted some flowers and not weeds!

Hansen Museum 5K Run/2 Mile Walk The Hansen Museum is pleased to announce its 6th Annual 5K Run/2 Mile Fun Walk, held in conjunction with the 47th Annual Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at the Hansen Museum in Logan, KS. Entry fees are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth 15 years old and younger.

All fees will be donated to Phillips County Hospice Services.

Check-in and t-shirt pick up starts at 7:00 a.m. on the corner of Douglas Street and Main Street in front of the Museum. The 5K run will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the 2-mile walk to follow at 8:15 a.m. Paid registrations received by August 3rd will receive a free t-shirt. USDA Offers Targeted Farm Loan Funding for Underserved Groups, Beginning Farmers The USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds producers that FSA offers targeted farm ownership and farm operating loans to assist underserved applicants as well as beginning farmers and ranchers.

USDA defines underserved applicants as a group whose members have been subjected to racial, ethnic, or gender prejudice because of their identity as members of the group without regard to their individual qualities.

For farm loan program purposes, targeted underserved groups are women, African Americans, American Indians

Underserved or beginning farmers and ranchers who cannot obtain commercial credit from a bank can apply for either FSA direct loans or guaranteed loans. Direct loans are made to applicants by FSA. Guaranteed loans are made by lending institutions who arrange for FSA to guarantee the loan.

FSA can guarantee up to 95 percent of the loss of principal and interest on a loan. The FSA guarantee allows lenders to make agricultural credit available to producers who do

not meet the lender's normal underwriting criteria.

The direct and guaranteed loan program provides for two types of loans: farm ownership loans and farm operating loans. In addition to customary farm operating and ownership loans, FSA now offers Microloans through the direct loan program. The focus of Microloans is on the financing needs of small, beginning farmer, niche and non-traditional farm operations.

Microloans are available for both ownership and operating finance needs. To learn more about microloans, visit

To qualify as a beginning producer, the individual or entity must meet the eligibility requirements outlined for direct or guaranteed loans. Additionally, individuals and all entity members must have operated a farm for less than 10 years. Applicants must materially or substantially participate in the operation.

Controlling Flies on Pastured Cattle There are many insecRachael Boyle Phillips-Rooks District Extension Agent ticide control methods available to manage horn Agriculture and Natural Resources There are many fly control options and strategies available to livestock producers to help manage the three fly species that economically impact grazing cattle; the horn fly, face fly and stable fly.

Horn flies are small in size, approximately 3/16” in length and are usually found on the backs, sides and poll area of cattle. During a warm summer afternoon, they can be found on the belly region of cattle. Horn flies, both male and females flies, acquire more than 30 blood meals per day. Horn fly feeding causes irritation, blood loss, decreased grazing efficacy, reduced weight gains, and diminished milk production in mother cows. Economic losses associated with horn flies are estimated at more than $1 billion dollars annually in the United States. Studies conducted in the U.S. and Canada have shown that horn flies can cause weight gain loss in cattle, and calf weaning weights can be negatively impacted from 4 – 15 percent.

The economic injury level (EIL) for horn flies is 200 flies per animal.

Yearling cattle can also be affected by the horn fly; other studies have shown yearling weights can be reduced by as much as 18 percent.

fly numbers. Back rubbers and dust bags are an effective way to reduce horn fly numbers if cattle are forced to use them. Insecticide ear tags and strips are a convenient method of horn fly control. However, many horn fly populations exhibit a degree of resistance to the pyrethroid class of insecticides. Therefore, it’s recommended to rotate insecticide classes. Animal sprays and pour-on products will provide 7-21 days of control and will need to be re-applied throughout the fly season. Oral larvicides prevent fly larvae from developing into adults. An important factor when using an oral larvicide is insuring steady consumption. An additional complicating issue using an oral larvicide is horn fly migration from neighboring untreated herds, which can mask the effectiveness of an oral larvicide. The Vet Gun™ applies an individual capsule of insecticide to an animal and can provide control between 21 and 35 days.

The face fly is a non-biting fly that feeds on animal secretions, nectar and dung liquids. The adult female face flies clustering around an animal’s eyes, mouth and muzzle, can cause extreme annoyance. Face flies will also feed on blood and other secretions around wounds caused by mechanical damage or other injury. Face fly adults closely resemble

house flies except they are slightly larger and darker than the house fly. Face flies are present throughout the summer but populations usually peak in late July and August. Face flies are most numerous along waterways, areas with abundant rainfall, canyon floors with trees and shaded vegetation, and on irrigated pastures.

Female face fly feeding causes damage to eye tissues, increases susceptibility to eye pathogens such as Pinkeye. Pinkeye is a highly contagious inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva of cattle.

Controlling face flies is essential in reducing most pinkeye problems.

Achieving adequate face fly control can be difficult because of their habit of feeding around the face and the significant time they spend off the animal.

Control is maximized when the cattle receive daily insecticide applications by either dust bags, oilers, sprays, or an insecticide impregnated ear tag/strip.

Ear tags/strips should be applied at the label recommended rate. Both cows and calves must be treated if control is to be achieved.

Pinkeye vaccines are available and should be considered if face flies and pinkeye have been a recurring problem. Currently, commercial and autogenous pinkeye vaccines are available; please check with your local veterinarian about the use of these products in your area.

Stable flies are serious pests of feedlots and dairies and of pasture cattle. The stable fly is a blood feeder, mainly feeding on the front legs of cattle, staying on the animal long enough to complete a blood meal.

Their bites are very painful; cattle will often react by stomping their legs, bunching at pasture corners, or stand in water to avoid being bitten.

Stable flies cause similar weight gain losses to both pasture and confinement cattle. University of Nebraska research, recorded a reduction in average daily gain of 0.44 lbs. per head with animals that received no insecticide treatment compared to animals that received a treatment. The economic threshold of 5 flies per leg is often exceeded in pastures.

The potential for adequate heat unit accumulation to allow the sorghum to reach maturity; and 3. Availability of adequate water either from stored soil moisture, rainfall, irrigation, or from a combination of any of the three.

The length of the growing season and heat unit accumulation are interrelated and will determine if sorghum will reach maturity prior to a killing freeze. No one wants to put time and resources into a crop and then see an early freeze or other adverse weather eliminate or greatly re-

Fortunately, growers can select a hybrid with a maturity rating that best fits their situation. Hybrids vary from 95 to 125 days in the time it takes from emergence to reaching physiological maturity.

Most medium-early to medium maturity hybrids are going to need 100 to 110 days under good growing conditions with adequate heat unit accumulation to reach maturity. To determine what maturity of sorghum to plant, count the number of days from the anticipated planting date to the average first freeze date.

I prefer to be conservative and subtract another 10 days. For example, for a June 25 planting date and an average first freeze of Oct. 20, there are 117 days. Subtract 10 days and the effective growing season is 107 days. Choose a hybrid that will mature in this length of time. If only

Seeding rate should also be increased by 20 percent over earlier planted sorghum. This is because tillering will be less due to warmer soil temperatures for later planted sorghum.

In addition, if planted in to heavy wheat residue, a higher seeding rate is often needed due to straw interference with good seed to soil contact.

Yields are typically less with late planted sorghum.

Depending on how late the sorghum is planted, yield reduction will generally range from 10 to 30% less compared to an optimum planting date. This should be taken into account when determining the amount of N to apply following wheat. Consider applying a starter fertilizer of N + P and then apply additional N approximately 20 to 25 days after the sorghum has emerged.

Farm Households Report Off-Farm Jobs offer More Stable Income

New data from the Department of Agriculture shows nearly half of all family farmers and their spouses reported having a job off the farm in 2018. USDA’s Economic Research Service reports the majority of households, regardless of farm size, say they work off the farm because it is more lucrative than farm work,

provides more reliable income, and may offer health and retirement benefits.

Among small family farms, those with annual gross cash farm income under $350,000, about 88 percent reported working off the farm because it was more reliable and 75 percent because it was more lucrative.

Among large-scale farm households, those with

annual gross cash farm income of $1 million or more, about 72 percent reported working off the farm because it was more reliable and 51 percent because it was more lucrative. About 40 percent of all principal operators or their spouses who work off the farm listed farm-related financial stress as a reason for having a job off the farm.

Bayer Announces Roundup and Dicamba Litigation Settlements Bayer Wednesday announced a series of agreements that will substantially resolve major outstanding Monsanto litigation. The announcement includes a settlement on U.S. Roundup product liability litigation, dicamba drift litigation and PCB water litigation.
