Senators Seek Open Antitrust Investigation into Meatpackers Amid Plant Closures Two U.S. Senators seek an antitrust investigation into the meatpacking industry. Senators Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, and Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, asked the Federal Trade Commission to open the antitrust investigation Wednesday. They say the industry is currently dominated by just a handful of large, multinational firms that have

concentrated meat processing into fewer and fewer facilities, leaving America’s food supply chain vulnerable to disruptions. In the bipartisan letter, the Senators note that the closing of three pork plants because of COVID-19 has resulted in the shutdown of 15 percent of America’s pork production “at a time when stable supply chains have become more critical than

ever.” The Senators say the FTC has the power to “shed light on these growing competition and security problems.” Baldwin and Hawley say the FTC should ask probing questions about major meatpacking firms’ conduct, pricing, and contracting, as well as how their commitments to overseas interests impact the U.S. market and national security.

The survey was in the field from April 16 to 27, 2020. The 105 respondents weighed in on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, the industry, their companies, supply chain and manufacturing operations, their financial expectations, as well as the challenges they face and specific ways the federal government can keep equipment manufacturing strong and ensure the nation’s economic resilience.

The survey’s key find-

ings include: Nine out of 10 executives surveyed said that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the overall economy is very negative, while more than half said that the impact on the industry is equally bad.

Seven out of 10 executives surveyed have experienced a moderately negative impact on their supply chain, while a quarter said the impact has been very negative.

Four out of 10 executives surveyed expect the outlook for the next 30 days to get worse and said they plan to lower their financial outlook for the same period of time by more than 30 percent. The outlook for the rest of the year is better, but six out of 10 said they still plan to reduce their financial outlook by up to 30 percent.

Nine out of 10 executives surveyed cited a decline in demand for equipment as the primary impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their business.

Kansas Corn Thanks Congressman Marshall for Leadership on Biofuels Infrastructure Bill While the entire fuel industry, including ethanol producers are experiencing a sharp downturn due to the Coronavirus outbreak, Kansas First District Representative Roger Marshall is looking to the future to build additional biofuel infrastructure by cosponsoring the Clean Fuels

Deployment Act. The legislation would to incentivize the installation of fueling infrastructure for ethanol blends greater than 10 percent and biodiesel blends greater than 20 percent.

“Kansas corn producers appreciate Congressman Marshall’s continued leadership on ensuring

consumers have access to higher ethanol blends,” said KCGA President Brent Rogers, Hoxie.

“Data from Kansas proves that when consumers have access to higher blends at their fuel retailers, they will respond with increased purchases of these lower cost, cleaner burning blends. We look forward to working

with Dr. Marshall to advance this vital piece of legislation.”

According to the National Corn Growers Association, the bill authorizes $600 million over six years to help retailers offer higher ethanol blends, expand the geographic area selling ethanol blends, support biodiesel fuel markets, and accelerate the deployment of fueling infrastructure. The legislation will work alongside the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to accelerate the availability and growth of biofuels.

The Kansas Corn Commission continues to work with retailers across the state offering assistance for pumps and promotion of higher ethanol blends and this bill would complement those efforts. Norton County Community Foundation Awards $12,500 in April through the Emergency Grant Funding Program

Norton, Kansas, April 2020 – Norton County Community Foundation awarded $12,500 to five organizations in the month of April through the Emergency Grant Funding Program. This program was launched last month in order to respond to the short and long-term challenges that nonprofits and charitable organizations are facing due to COVID-19.

The April grantees are as follows:

Norton Theatre Association received $2,500 to support ongoing fixed expenses (i.e. salaries, utilities, insurance, etc.).

Norton Area Child Care Association (Sunshine Learning Center) received $2,500 to help cover the cost of an unexpected repair.

Valley Hope received $2,500 to purchase technology in order to provide online AA/ NA meetings.

City of Norton Travel & Tourism received $2,500 for advertising and personnel expenses.

Nex-Generation Round Up for Youth, Inc. received $2,500 to support building upkeep and costs of supplies/materials, which continue to

accrue despite the program being on hold due to COVID-19.

The Emergency Grant Funding program is still accepting applications, which are reviewed weekly. Qualifications include: Applicant must be a nonprofit or charitable organization serving Norton County.

Maximum request amount per application is $2,500.

Applicant must be able to prove that the new/ increased burden is related to COVID-19.

The application, along with other COVID-19 related information and resources, can be found on NCCF’s website: www.nortonccf. org/covid-19.

“Soil Tests” Getting ready to plant your garden? If you have not completed a soil test in the last couple years, now is a great time to check out the nutrient composition of your soil and make any amendments prior to planting. So, what’s the process for a test? It’s simple. You will begin by taking a representative sample of your garden. You can either use a soil probe (available at all our Twin

Creeks District offices) or a shovel. To avoid non-representative samples, take a series of samples throughout your garden in a “W” pattern.

Each sample should be 6 to 12 inches deep. Combine all your samples in a clean bucket, then mix thoroughly. Finally, remove just 1 pint to submit. If you have one area of your garden that is particularly troublesome, you may want to submit an additional sample from just that area.

Once you are ready to turn in your soil sample, give your local Twin Creeks District office a call and we will make arrangements for drop-off.

We will walk you through a quick one-page sheet to collect additional information about your garden that helps the laboratory make the best possible recommendations for your soil. Finally, we will send the sample off to our K-State Soil Testing Laboratory. The total cost per sample is around $20 for a standard test, and it takes about 2 weeks to receive your soil report back from the lab. The report will give you recommendations on any soil amendments needed as well as information on what fertilizers you should plan to use this year to help your garden grow to its peak production.
