Kansas Chamber Releases Plan to Restart State Economy Safely The Kansas Chamber has released more than 40 recommendations gathered from the state's business community to help restart the state's economy as the COVID-19 pandemic begins to ease.

"The Kansas business community’s priority is ensuring its employees are safe and healthy while working to provide the much-needed support, services and products during this global crisis," said Chamber President and CEO Alan Cobb.

"At some point, possibly soon, the health crisis will subside to the point where business and society can begin to reopen.

To ensure Kansas is

ready, state and local government officials and business leaders should work together to develop specific health metrics and safety criteria, that when met, will give businesses, their employees and citizens confidence in the safety of their workplaces so we can begin to reopen the Kansas economy."

The Relief and Recovery Agenda reflects related health and economic data as well as input from chamber members and other business organizations from across the state, representing all industries and business sectors.

Cobb said the safety and health of Kansans should continue to be the priority as the state

begins to allow more Kansans to get back to work.

"Kansas needs to ensure the state's plan includes a process to move Kansas from criteria for “essential businesses” to a plan for “safe businesses” that allows all businesses to perform their functions in a manner completely safe for their employees, customers and society," said Cobb.

"The health status of geographic regions should be taken into consideration. There also should be specific protections for those most vulnerable based on age and/or health status."

The agenda includes short and long-term recommendations.

Most require either to

be enacted with an executive order by Governor Laura Kelly or require action by the Kansas Legislature.

"Kansas was one of the last states to fully recover from the 2008-09 recession," said Cobb. "The economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis will have long-term consequences.

It is the hope of the Kansas business community, our state will begin planning now so our state is leading the country's recovery efforts this time."

Coronavirus-Related Cattle Industry Losses Estimated at $13.6 Billion A study released recently estimates cattle industry losses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic will reach $13.6 billion. The study was commissioned by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and conducted by a team of agricultural economists.

The study shows cowcalf producers will see the largest impact, with COVID-19-related losses totaling an estimated $3.7 billion, or $111.91 per head for each mature breeding animal in the United States. Without offsetting relief payments, those losses could increase by $135.24 per mature breeding animal, for an additional impact

totaling $4.45 billion in the coming years.

Researchers who contributed to the study say the current situation is very fluid and uncertain, and additional damages are likely. NCBA hopes the results will assist USDA in determining how best to allocate CARES Act relief funds to cattle producers. NCBA CEO Colin Woodall says the study shows relief funds provided

by Congress were a good first step. However, "there remains a massive need for more funding to be allocated as soon as members of Congress reconvene."

“Bugs” That Eat Toilet Paper Rachael Boyle Phillips-Rooks District Extension Agent Agriculture and Natural Resources For those of you that have been stocking-up on the toilet paper during the COVID-19 crisis I have some bad news... there are insects (“bugs”) that will actually feed on toilet paper. Some insects actually have an affinity for toilet paper that may be related to the “softness,” which makes it easier for the insects to chew on the toilet paper sheets.

One of these insects is the silverfish, which is grayish-white, segmented, and approximately 3/4 inches long. Silverfish have two antennae that move back and forth in motion and there

are three long tails or bristles protruding from the back of the abdomen. In addition to silverfish, cockroaches, termites, and booklice may occasionally enjoy munching on toilet paper sheets. Silverfish will start feeding on the outer edges of the toilet paper and move inward. Most people keep their stockpile of toilet paper in the basement.

However, this is a prime environment for silverfish development and reproduction since, in general, basements are humid and damp. The higher the humidity, the faster silverfish will develop and reproduce.

Upended supply chains are straining to recalibrate to the dynamics of our presently slowed society that has wrecked our world.

I can’t imagine the agony of public health officials who face making unprecedented decisions. I can’t imagine the fear health care workers must have going to work every day. I can’t imagine the pain of hospitality workers who’ve lost their livelihoods are enduring. I can’t imagine the grief of families who’ve lost loved ones without being by their side and suffered the further indignity of not holding a funeral.

I can’t imagine what’s going through farmers’ minds with planting decisions looming.

of ranchers balancing keeping cattle and the daily cost to feed them versus selling at what amounts to fire sale prices. I can’t imagine the rage dairy producers feel when dumping milk.

While I can’t comprehend the situations so many find themselves in, I know we are all struggling to come to grips with enduring this crisis at a distance. I also know there are countless people who are still working behind the scenes to either mitigate the economic effects or end the pandemic.

I know this because I’ve seen it firsthand these past few weeks at Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB), where our mission is to strengthen agriculture and the lives of Kansans through advocacy, education and service.

In addition to KFB staff, county Farm Bureaus and members across the state have stepped up to provide educational resources and opportunities to parents

who’ve also become substitute teachers.

A partnership between KFB’s Foundation for Agriculture, county Farm Bureaus and Farm Bureau Financial Services has the ambitious goal of ending hunger in Kansas.

Our advocacy staffers are working with their counterparts at the American Farm Bureau Federation to ensure the U.S. Department of Agriculture understands the needs of Kansas farmers and ranchers as it crafts a relief program authorized in the CARES Act. Separately these may seem like small things, but they’re small things within our control.

That’s how we get past the confusion and gain clarity as we begin to rebuild a world forever changed.

White House Economic Revival Group Includes Ag Representatives The White House economic recovery group includes agriculture leaders.

Announced this week, the Great American Economic Revival Industry Groups will “chart the path forward toward a future of unparalleled American prosperity,” according to a White House press release.

The panel on agriculture includes American Farm Bureau Federa-

tion President Zippy Duvall, along with processor and packer representatives from Tyson Foods, Cargill, Archer-Daniels-Midland, and others.

The plan includes a separate food and beverage industry panel, as well.

There are 16 panels in all, representing most of the U.S. economic sectors.

Crop and livestock markets are plunging during the COVID-19 pandemic, with industry losses

worth billions of dollars.

The National Pork Producers Council called the pandemic a "financial disaster" for pork producers. The nation's hog farmers face a collective $5 billion loss for the remainder of the year, according to the organization. Nearly all agriculture sectors are requesting relief from the White House and the federal government to help farmers through the pandemic.

Consumer concerns remain high amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research by the Consumer Brands Association shows that for the sixth week, American attitudes have remained largely consistent, as 91 percent of Americans say they are generally concerned about the virus.

Preparedness also held steady from last week, with 76 percent of Americans reporting

they feel prepared for the coronavirus' impact on their life. As manufacturers ramp up production and grocery stores implement item limits to prevent overbuying, 55 percent of respondents reported seeing more availability and restocks of high-demand items. Access concerns over finding shelf-stable food and beverage items, as well as overthe-counter medicines, both dropped. The most
