Prescribed Burning Workshop Hemp for horses? Tarleton researcher investigating benefits

A Prescribed Burning Workshop is being planned by the Phillips County Conservation District, Rooks County Conservation District, and the Smith County Conservation District.

Topics to be covered are; reasons for burning, wildlife and prescribed burning, local and state regulations, fire weather, safety, liability, use of burning contractors, planning and conducting a burn.

The workshop is going to be held at the Phillips County 4H building north of Phillipsburg on Wednesday March the 4th. The workshop will start at 9:30 A.M. with registration and

end about 3:00 P.M. A lunch will be served on site for a small fee. A grant from the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts will the cost of the workshop notebooks to be given out. We are still working on getting sponsors for the refreshments and the lunch. There will be a $5.00 registration fee that can be paid that morning if you tell us you are coming by the 28th of February.

K-State, industry experts outline criteria for buying bulls For cattle producers, bull sale season has arrived. Prospective buyers are flipping through the sale catalogs and studying the pedigree information, performance data and bull pictures trying to determine where they want to make their investment.

As genomic advancements have progressed, cattle producers have more information than ever before to help with their selections. But for some, all that data can be overwhelming and make it difficult to know what information they should prioritize.

Experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute addressed data-driven bull selection during a recent podcast to help cattle producers sort through the data.

Dan Moser, president of Angus Genetics, Inc., joined the Kansas State team and offered the following advice.

Genetic Priorities on Data “Focus first on the economic indexes,”

Moser said. He explained that an index is a number that combines trait EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences, which are an estimate of the animal’s genetic merit for a given trait compared to other animals) weighted by their economic impact.

K-State beef extension specialist Bob Weaber cautioned buyers to align with the right index for their operation.

“One of the biggest mistakes producers make with indexes is that they select bulls on one index, but raise the calves under a different scenario,” Weaber said.

Moser explained it further by citing the terminal index. “Think about it as a steer index because it combines growth and carcass traits, but does not include maternal traits such as calving ease and cow longevity,” he said.

not be a benefit to selecting on the terminal index because the cow/calf producer isn’t getting paid a premium on the calves While studying the data is an important part of the buying process, Weaber recommends producers do a visual inspection of the cattle.

“While we are improving EPDs and indexes, it is still important to look at the cattle for structural issues so you know that the bulls are sound and will be able to service cows for a long time,” he said.

The experts also agreed that there is some data that producers can discard.

“Don’t focus on the actual weights and measures because those have already been included in the EPDs,” Moser said. Weaber added that the buyer needs to confirm with the seedstock operator that all of the actual data has been turned into their respective breed association so that the purchaser is assured of accurate data.

“I advise commercial buyers to extend that review of data to the dams of the bulls in consider-

ation,” Moser said. “If you are going to base your selections on indexes and EPDs, which you should, then you also need to be working with seedstock producers who are the complete recorders and submitters of the data.”

Bull-to-Cow Ratio As producers plan for their upcoming bull purchases, it is advisable that they know what the breeding demands of that sire will be. Age of the bull, terrain, length of the breeding season are just some factors for consideration when trying to estimate that number according to veterinarian Bob Larson.

“The national average is one mature bull for every 30 cows,” Larson said.

Weaber added that yearling bulls will not be able to breed as many cows in season as mature bulls.

“Figure out how many months old the bull is at turnout and then follow the rule of one cow per bull for each month of his age,” he said.

Larson also stressed the importance of watching the bulls closely during

Moser added that it is also a good idea for the prospective buyer to visit the ranch of the seedstock supplier outside of the sale day.

“Seedstock producers have high value animals.

As the buyer you want to make sure they raise cattle in a similar way to how you do,” he said.

Larson added that commercial customers should consider the services provided by the seedstock operator when making that purchase.

“A lot of breeders provide transportation services but some will provide even more like helping you market your feeder calves and providing connections with others in the cattle chain,” he said.

Moser added: “Write a job description for your bull and then make sure is he qualified for the one you write.”

The 2020 World Pork Expo is back at the Iowa State Fairgrounds for its 32nd year. The expo will take place on June 3-5, providing pork professionals with three full days of education, innovation, and networking.

“We’re excited to welcome all members of the pork industry back to Des Moines after a brief hiatus in 2019,” said David Herring, NPPC president, and pork producer from Lillington, N.C. Out of an abundance of caution, the 2019 World Pork Expo was canceled due to reports of African Swine Fever (ASF) in China and other countries. Professionals in the pork industry worked together across the globe to understand the situation and evaluate risks presented with ASF. Since the outbreak of ASF in 2019, the United States has significantly stepped up biosecurity measures taken to prevent an outbreak in the United States. The 2020 Expo will have increased biosecurity onsite during the show. Additional changes to the 2020 World Pork Expo include the decision to relocate the live swine show to reduce an already negligible risk.

“Continuing to host the show for our more than 20,000 producers and pork professionals visiting across the states is extremely important to us,” said Herring. “Amidst the ASF, our pork industry continues to grow and it’s truly a testament to how strong the industry is in the U.S.” Registration will soon be available online for those who plan to attend the 2020 World Pork Expo June 3-5.

Livestock judges seek best traits Selecting the top breeding stock for a beef cattle herd means knowing what to look for in an animal.

That’s the goal in teaching students about livestock evaluation at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.

Breeding bulls and heifers scrutinized last Sunday at the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines were among an elite set of beef cattle, say two sophomores on the NCTA Livestock Judging Team.

Nebraskans Seth Racicky of Mason City and Camden Wilke of Columbus were among six Aggie students who compared traits in 10 classes of cattle, marked their judging cards 1-4 in placings, and later gave six sets of oral reasons to judges about those rankings.

“It was the best cattle we’ve seen all year, and the most elite cattle in certain classes,” said Racicky, whose specialty is dairy, and then beef cattle.

The sophomore animal science major was fourth in placings and 22nd overall individual at the contest.

Teammate Camden Wilke, also a sopho-

more in animal science, was eighth in placings and 25th overall.

Their favorite class to judge?

“The Maintainer heifers was the best class we saw,” Racicky said, quickly seconded by Wilke.

“It was a scenario (for reasons) where we had to pick a champion and reserve champion, and talk it like it was the champion drive of the breed show,” they explained of the four breeding heifers.

Age and size of the composite breed of yearlings varied as birthdates spanned January to April, 2019.

“They were elite cattle, brought to the Beef Expo by a family who raised them,” said Wilke, “Some of those were probably $20,000 heifers when they sold in the sale.”

Both students did well in placings while a teammate, Garrett Lapp of Adamsville, Ohio, proved the value of oral reasons.

Lapp was 12th in placings but “out-talked” Aggie teammates in reasons to gain an advantage and place 19th overall in the collegiate contest.

“Garrett caught up to us with his reason score,” Wilke said. “He’s really good at reasons.”

And for just cause.

live animals during judging workouts, the Aggies aggressively practice giving oral reasons each Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45 a.m.

Most students keep their note tablets handy from earlier competitions, or they rely on visuals in their head.

“I don’t take a lot of notes anymore but can see the classes from recall,” Racicky said.

Other teammates judging in Iowa were Maisie Kennicutt of Wallace, Matt Stichka of Mullen, and Emily Riley of Norton, Kansas.

When the Iowa contest was all said and done, the NCTA Aggie sophs were ninth high team overall, earning seventh in placings and 11th in reasons.

They’ll test their skills again this Saturday at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney, where they will be joined by their freshmen teammates.

Then, the next contest for the sophomore team will be March 11-18 at the Houston Livestock Show.

Both Racicky and Wilke plan to return to NCTA for a third year in 2020-2021 to add an agribusiness degree to their portfolio. They might also go on to UNL for a bachelor’s degree and future livestock judging.
