Doreen’s Anthony De Marco is heading for a slow-cooking showdown when he competes in the Meatstock BBQ Wars next month. Mr De Marco, with the help of his wife Megan, will be competing for the title of Melbourne’s barbecuing champion during the Meatstock Festival at Melbourne Showgrounds. Mr De Marco, who will be competing under the name Heat Check Barbecue, said he was looking forward to showcasing his skills. He said his barbecue speciality is pit beans, while brisket is his favourite to cook, noting his barbecuing skills have come a long way from his early days. “My favourite memory would be my first time using a smoker. I cooked pulled pork, was constantly hovering over it, mucking around trying to get the temperature right, and throwing hickory chips on the charcoal like an over-eager aunty throwing confetti at a wedding. Council stoush escalates By Laura Michell Whittlesea council has accused former councillor Ricky Kirkham of attempting to undermine its staff and operations in the days following his resignation from council. Mr Kirkham announced his resignation on social media last week, just hours before the council was due to meet to appoint a new acting chief executive. In a Facebook post, Mr Kirkham said the current circumstances at council had made it “impossible” for him to discharge his obligations “to hold council accountable”. “Since my election to council, I worked hard to expose anomalies that could amount to
fraud or corruption,” Mr Kirkham said. In a statement, the council’s acting chief executive Kelvin Spiller said: “Since his resignation on Monday 17 February, Mr Kirkham has made public comments that reflect negatively on the City of Whittlesea in an attempt to undermine current staff and the organisation’s operations. “In relation to Mr Kirkham’s allegation, we are not aware of any incident of this nature currently under investigation.” As revealed by Star Weekly, Mr Kirkham was due to face a councillor conduct panel prior to his resignation. The Local Government Inspectorate had made an application for a councillor conduct
panel “to make a finding of serious misconduct against Mr Kirkham”. The circumstances surrounding the inspectorate’s application is confidential. Mr Spiller said the council believed this was only the second time in its history that the inspectorate had launched an investigation into a councillor for serious misconduct. The councillor conduct panel process has been discontinued following Mr Kirkham’s resignation. Mr Kirkham said he could not comment on the panel hearing. He said he resigned because he refused to put himself in a situation where his accountability and responsibility to ratepayers “exposes me
to allegations of misconduct for simply doing my job”. It comes as Mr Spiller confirmed the council was involved in a number of confidential matters and investigations with Fair Work Australia, WorkSafe, the Local Government Inspectorate and the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC). A IBAC spokesperson said: “For legal and operational reasons, IBAC generally does not comment on whether we have a complaint or investigation before us.” Meanwhile, council last week appointed a new acting chief executive, former Manningham council boss Joe Carbone, for up to 12 months.

Peak hour closure unauthorised By Laura Michell The developer behind roadworks causing “mayhem� on Mickleham Road did not have permission to reduce the road to one lane during the morning peak earlier this month, the Department of Transport has revealed. The roadworks on Mickleham Road at Lemonwood Drive and Hillview Road are being carried out on behalf of the Pask Group – the developer of the Maples estate. The works include the installation of new traffic lights and are expected to be completed
by the middle of the year. On February 7, Mickleham Road was reduced to one lane during the morning peak as a result of the roadworks. Hume councillor Joseph Haweil said the lane closure created a “nightmareâ€? situation for motorists and questioned why the works were not being done in off-peak times. He said it took him 34 minutes to drive one kilometre from his home to the exit of the Greenvale Gardens estate. “It is completely unacceptable to close a key arterial road ‌ and turn it into a one-lane
road during key times when tens of thousands of people are using the road. It is a recipe for mayhem.â€? Mayor Carly Moore described the situation on Mickleham Road as “out of controlâ€?, adding it took her children one hour and 15 minutes to travel from Craigieburn to Aitken College on February 7. A Department of Transport spokesperson said the developer did not have the necessary approvals to close lanes on Mickleham Road. “The department ‌ has issued the developer involved with a warning to ensure
that this doesn’t happen again,� a department spokesperson said. “Our surveillance officers will conduct more frequent site visits to make sure the developer adheres to the conditions of the permit.� The Pask Group was contacted for comment. Meanwhile, Hume council has called on the state government to duplicate Sunbury Road between the airport and Oaklands Road to reduce congestion. Cr Jack Medcraft said congestion had increased recently as motorists desperate to avoid Mickleham Road were opting to use Sunbury Road instead.

Hey baby, this boom keeps growing The baby boom in Hume and Whittlesea is continuing, with new data revealing more than 7000 babies were born across the two municipalities in 2018. Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that Hume and Whittlesea had the third and fourth highest birth rates in the state in 2018. According to the ABS, 3818 babies were born to parents living in Hume, while 3425 babies were born to Whittlesea parents. Casey had the state’s highest birth rate, with 5427 babies born, followed by Wyndham with
4878 births. The birth rate in Hume rose 25 per cent between 2012 and 2018. In 2012, 3059 babies were born in Hume. Whittlesea’s birth rate rose by 18 per cent during the same period, up from 2915 births in 2012. Northern Hospital’s chief nursing and midwifery officer, Debra Bourne said the hospital was managing the baby boom through “careful planning�. “Maternity care is an important element of Northern Health’s services to our community, with many young families moving to
Melbourne’s growing north,â€? she said. “We are ‌ determining services required to ensure we meet the needs of women, babies and families. This includes all aspects of parenthood through pregnancy, birth and ongoing support needed when at home. “[This year] is the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife and I’m very proud of the wonderful work of our nurses and midwives who care for mothers and babies in the north.â€?
Concerns have been raised about illegal duck hunting occurring at the Jacana Wetlands. Hume councillor Geoff Porter said he received a phone call from a resident earlier this month who was concerned she had witnessed duck hunting while walking along the Gladstone Park side of the Moonee Ponds Creek. Cr Porter said the resident reported seeing two dogs coming out of the water with something in their mouths and what looked like a pile of dead ducks near two men. Cr Porter reported the incident to Broadmeadows police and has asked Hume council to write to Melbourne Water, who manage the area, so it can investigate. In Victoria, duck hunting is only permitted in certain locations during duck hunting season, which typically begins in mid-late March. According to the Game Management Authority, hunting is not permitted at any time in Melbourne Water catchment areas. “This is disgraceful,â€? Cr Porter said. “It is just staggering what some people think they can do.â€? Cr Karen Sherry said duck hunting was “not onâ€?. Melbourne Water’s north west region team leader, Ben English, said the organisation had been advised of reports of duck hunting occurring at the wetlands. “We will inspect the site ‌ and liaise with relevant authorities if necessary,â€? he said. Security high as tensions rise By Laura Michell Tensions between Whittlesea’s Macedonian and Greek communities has resulted in security guards being hired for council meetings. Security staff were on hand for the council’s meeting earlier this month, with at least five guards patrolling outside the council chamber. A group of Macedonian residents attended the meeting, gathering outside the council chamber with a flag bearing the Vergina Sun symbol prior to the start of the meeting. The group said they were attending the
meeting in support of mayor Emilia Lisa Sterjova, who came under fire from sections of the Greek community late last year after posting a photo to Facebook showing her dancing with a flag featuring the symbol. The Vergina Sun was the subject of controversy when it was used on the national flag of the newly-independent Republic of Macedonia in the 1990s. The symbol is considered to be part of Greek culture. The flag was changed in the mid-1990s. In December, a large number of people from the Greek and Macedonian communities

- Dean Jenkins attended the council meeting, where a protest had been planned. A man in his 20s was allegedly assaulted at a restaurant in South Morang following the meeting. Council spokesman Dean Jenkins said the council hired security for its February 4 meeting after it became aware there may be a
large crowd planning to attend the meeting. “Council engaged security staff to ensure the meeting could run smoothly,” he said. “We will liaise with police on a case-by-case basis as to what security is required for any future meetings.” Cr Lawrie Cox said the presence of security at council meetings was directly related to the alleged assault after the December council meeting. “We can’t just look away,” he said. “We should condemn any violence associated with it.”
Fun headlines festival Craigieburn Anzac Park will be the place to be this Saturday for the Craigieburn Festival. The annual event will feature carnival rides, roving entertainers and free kids’ activities including face-painting, a circus workshop, puppet activities and an animal farm. There will also be live music throughout the day from a variety of musicians including Byron Bay singer and songwriter Kyle Lionhart, who will headline the event. Other performers include Viktoria K, InSync Entertainment and Denzil Para. Several food trucks, including Curly Suds, Little Waffle Empire, and Airport Ice Cream, will be in attendance. An active zone will be set up featuring Upfield Soccer Club, Craigieburn Little Athletics, Hume Bombers Football Club and Fernwood Fitness, while there will also be stalls from community groups such as Banksia Gardens and Second Chance Animal Rescue.
The festival will conclude with fireworks, which will follow the CFA Torchlight Parade. The parade, which is now in its 75th year, will take place at 8.45pm and will include representatives from Craigieburn CFA, the SES, police and Ambulance Victoria. A new public space will be created at the High Street entrance of Thomastown Primary School, footpaths replaced and pedestrian crossings raised as part of a $3.2 million Thomastown Urban Streetscape Improvement Project. Doors, hearts open Thomastown Mosque will open its doors to the wider community next month. The Station Street Mosque is one of 28 mosques and Islamic centres across the state to take part in the Islamic Council of Victoria’s (ICV) mosque open day. The open day will mark the first anniversary of the Christchurch mosque shootings. ICV president Mohamed Mohideen said the day aimed to break down misconceptions about Islam and strengthen community spirit. “Last year, the ICV and mosque communities received an influx of calls about whether we were still prepared to open our doors and hearts just days after such a tragedy. We were graciously inundated with visitors coming into our mosques to stand in solidarity with us,” he
said. “In Islam, we are encouraged to respond to anger with kindness, fear with love and we know that being proactive is more powerful than being reactive. “Come in and share in our cultural heritage.” Thomastown Mosque spokesman Remzi Unal said the mosque hopes to build better relationships with neighbours by taking part in the day. He said the open day would include guided mosque tours, a speech from a relative of one of the Christchurch victims, and Turkish food. A shared path is being built at Huskisson Recreation Reserve in Lalor. The path is the first stage of the Huskisson Recreation Reserve Masterplan which was adopted by Whittlesea council last year. The 700-metre path will provide a safe pedestrian and cycling link between residential Lalor and the Epping shopping precinct.

‘New Epping’ gets green light By Laura Michell Plans for a housing and employment precinct on the site of a former landfill and quarry in Epping are a step closer, after Whittlesea council adopted an amendment to its planning scheme to allow the development to proceed. Developer Riverlee is planning a $1.2 billion mixed-use community for the 51-hectare site on Cooper Street, next to Northern Hospital. In May 2017, the council wrote to Planning Minister Richard Wynne requesting to amend its planning scheme to enable the project to go
ahead. Mr Wynne gave the council permission to alter its planning scheme in December 2017, and submissions on the proposed amendment were heard at an independent panel hearing in 2018. The panel approved the amendment, subject to an environmental audit, which took place in December 2019 and found the site was “suitable” for the project. The council will now submit the planning scheme amendment to Mr Wynne for final approval, allowing a development plan to be
created for the precinct. Dubbed “new Epping” the development includes medium to high density housing, a private hospital, as well as commercial and office sites. Cr Lawrie Cox said council should be proud of the development. “One of the major benefits, of course, that this council should be proud of, is that it is going to facilitate one of the largest affordable housing projects,” he said. Cr Norm Kelly said it was a great development for the city, adding that his previous concerns
about the presence of methane on the site had been addressed. Riverlee development director David Lee previously told Star Weekly the development is expected to create 3100 jobs during construction and 3700 ongoing jobs. “The population of Melbourne’s northern growth corridor is expected to almost double in the next 15 years to accommodate over 1.1 million people. “With this growth comes the critical need for a host of new services and infrastructure,” he said.
Inspiration on display Craigieburn artists will be showcasing their talents at the annual Craigieburn Art Show this weekend. The show, which is in its 30th year, features exhibitions from members of the Craigieburn Art Group, as well as demonstrations from local artists Rex Amos, Jo Brookshaw and Ian Harker. The show raises money for the Craigieburn SES. Ammer Esher, who will have three paintings on display, said he hoped his work inspired others to get in touch with their creative side. Esher, who was an art teacher in Iraq, said he started painting at a young age and went on to study art at university. He has been a member of the Craigieburn Art Group for about eight months. “I like painting portraits; I don’t know why, but I do,” he said.

New links for old tram A retired W-Class tram will be given a second life in Lalor. Links Community Group is one of more than 100 organisations across Victoria to receive one of the iconic W-Class trams, which were being stored at the Newport tram workshops in various states of disrepair. The state government ran an expression of interest process in 2018, allowing community groups to apply for a tram. More than 1500 applications were received for 134 trams. The Links Community Group received its tram on February 17. Group co-ordinator Matthew Odgers said the plan was to transform the tram into a
community space to be used by small groups in the area. “How that will exactly be done will be determined over the next year as we run ‘Transforming Lalor’ – a series of kitchen table conversations in which Lalor as a community will get to decide how to develop and run the space,” he said. “By the end, we will have a clear vision for the future of the tram – shaped by the strengths, needs and desires of the community.” Mr Odgers said he hoped the community would embrace the space and view the tram as an icon of Lalor. SPORT Bulls looking to regain confidence under new coach Bundoora is hoping to regain some confidence in the Northern Football League Women’s competition. After a division 3 premiership in their first year, the Bulls struggled in division 1 last year and were winless. The Bulls are hoping to be graded into division 2 this year and they can start to rebuild the side. New Bulls coach Amy Callaway said last year had been a tough one for the group. “We always thought it would be a struggle and pleaded to be in division 2,” she said. “They [the league] had other ideas and a few girls have left as they were disillusioned. “Hopefully this year we can be in division 2 and hopefully rebuild and get a few wins on the board and get the confidence back.” Callaway has been part of the Bulls’ women’s program since it started three seasons ago.
She said she was keen to step up into the coaching role when Gary Moorcroft stepped down after two seasons in charge. “My dad played football at Bundoora and I’ve been around the club since I was a kid. It’s such a great football club and once Gary stepped down I thought I might put my hand up to coach the girls. “My dad also coaches at the club and I look up to him.” Callaway previously coached Diamond Creek’s women’s reserves side and helped out with Auskick in Yarrambat. She said having had Moorcroft, a Bulls club legend and AFL premiership player, as coach had been fantastic for the group. “I have big shoes to fill and he’s given me a lead into this role. He’s always there.” Callaway, who will continue to play this season, has also played 100 games of football,
making her one of the most experienced players in the Bulls line-up. She said there had been some good numbers at training, but they were looking to add a few more players to the group. Anyone of any ability is welcome to come down with their youngster player 16. “We started training back at the end of October and we got a good couple of months leading into Christmas,” Callaway said. “We started back at the end of January and the numbers have been good. “We’ve been learning more drills and the skill level has picked up since the start of October.” Callaway said the focus for the side this season was rebuilding and looking at the long-term future of the club. Briefs Cricket It’s heartache for Plenty Valley and Australian fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck, who has been ruled out of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tournament. Vlaeminck, who was recently named Australian young cricketer of the year, has suffered a stress fractures in her right foot. She was officially ruled out of the tournament on Thursday and was replaced by Molly Strano. The World Cup started on Friday night.
Basketball Craigieburn’s Ezi Magbegor has been named the Women’s National Basketball League Betty Watson Australian Youth Player of the Year. Magbegor was the runaway winner on 38 votes, 10 clear of Bendigo Spirit’s Shyla Heal. Magbegor averaged 13 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the regular season for the Melbourne Boomers. The award replaces the rookie of the year award, and now recognises the best players 23-years-old or younger. Magbegor won the rookie award for the 2017-18 season.

Warriors claim the title By Tara Murray Westmeadows has broken through for its first Victorian Turf Cricket Association Women’s T20 premiership. After being runners-up the first two seasons, it was third time lucky for the Warriors against Keilor on Sunday. Westmeadows was favourite heading into the game, having gone through the regular season undefeated, but was pushed by a young Keilor side. Warriors coach Danny Law said the premiership meant a lot to the playing group. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “Words can’t really describe it. “It’s surreal and three years in the making. We’ve put a few demons to bed, which is good.” The Warriors won the toss and elected to bat and had a solid start before a few wickets started to fall, putting them in trouble at 5-53. The two batted smartly and guided the team to 5-84. O’Donnell finished 27 not out, while Linton finished 11 not out. Law said the pair batted well and were the difference in the game. “We lost a few too many wickets, three of our five wickets were bowled on a good wicket, we played across the line too many times. “Kailey and Danielle, they kept their heads. The easy thing would have been to just go out there and slog away and go out. “We could have been bowled out for 60-odd on the board. They stayed composed and looked for the bad ball and knocked the singles around.” Law said despite thinking a score of more than 100 was par, he was confident that they could get the job done with some good bowling and fielding. The Warriors couldn’t have asked for a better start with the ball, taking a wicket in each of the first two overs. Keilor was soon in trouble at 6-13.
They fought back late in the innings, before being bowled out for 58 in the 14th over. “I thought the bowling was really on point at the start of the innings, before in the middle we probably bowled a few too many extras,” Law said. “We figured out it was best to bowl at the stumps and when we did that we got on top.” Danielle Linton was the standout with the ball, taking 4-12 off four overs. Natalie Linton and O’Donnell took two wickets each. O’Donnell, one of the younger players in the team, was named player of the match for her 27 not out and two wickets. Law said they weren’t surprised to see her pull out a big performance at a big time. “It’s not the first time she’s done it,” he said. “There’s been quite a few times this season she’s come in and knocked it around and she’s played with composure. “She’s done it on three or four ocassions this season and she’s only going to get better and better.”
The Northern Region T20 grand final was postponed due to wet weather. The final between Lalor Stars and North Eltham Wanderers was to be played last Tuesday at Eltham North Reserve, but was called off due to heavy rain during the day. The final is due to be played on Tuesday, February 25, at Eltham North Reserve.
NPL Hume City has made it two from two with victory against Green Gully on Friday night in the National Premier League. Hume opened the scoring in the first half through Josh Bingham in the 32nd minute. James Brown scored the sealer in the 65th minute, with Hume winning 2-0. Pingers lose a thriller and suffer second straight loss

Epping let slip a chance to return to the winners list in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s Barclay Shield. Having already secured a finals spot, the final few rounds for the Pingers is an opportunity to fine-tune a few things heading into finals. After dropping a rain interrupted game the round before, the Pingers lost a thriller to Lower Eltham on Saturday. For much of the game the Pingers were in control of the game, but they weren’t able to close it out. Pingers coach Jeff Hughes said the result was a little bit disappointing. “Certainly at one stage we were in control, but it went the wrong way,” he said. “We made a few bad decisions with the way we went about it chasing the total.” In a match that became a one-day game after day one last week was washed out, Lower Eltham batted first and made 131. Hughes said Lower Eltham started well, before the Pingers responded. “The first nine overs they were 0-55 or 0-56.
We had a great fightback and took 10-80 in that period. “There was also some great fielding.” Josh Henkel was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-14. Similar to Lower Eltham’s innings, Epping started well with the bat before they were restricted. After being 0-40 and then 3-95, the Pingers fell short making 8-125. Andrew Licovski top scored with 38. Hughes said they backed themselves to turn their form around next week and then into finals. The Pingers sit third and that’s where they will finish the regular season. They will face Heidelberg in the first round of finals in a knockout semi final. Hughes said they were hopeful that Billy McKeown would return to the side in the next couple of weeks after a hamstring injury. Having already secured a finals spot in this grade for the first time, the Eagles take plenty of confidence into the finals series. Where they finish in that top four will be decided on the final day of the regular season with the top four sides all playing each other. The Eagles, who sit fourth, are playing ladder leaders Westmeadows in the final round. Eagles captain Chris Laffan said there was a really good crowd on day one of the match to watch the two sides that have built up a good relationship in recent years. Laffan was more than happy after day one, with his side making 227. “The runs are good especially since we got sent in,” Laffan said. “Wickets were hard to prepare because of the rain, but it ended up being a good batting deck. “We were none down at tea with Jordie [Dean] and Daniel English getting through some quality bowling. “It allowed Mick [Bury] and Josh [Eaton] to have a good hit at the end.” English top scored with 65, while Bury made 45 coming in at number eight. Laffan said their batting depth was one of the keys for the side. “We’ve got a fair few players who have sacrificed their games. They could have gone elsewhere and got some more opportunities with the bat and ball. “Everyone is on the same page. There’s the opportunity to play finals in this grade for the first time.” “We have an eye on winning a final and maybe even going further and winning a premiership.” Laffan said he was happy with their total, but knows that a win isn’t assured. He said Westmeadows is the best batting side in the competition. “We just have to make sure we field well and build up the pressure with the ball,” he said. “We pride ourselves on that. They have some key wickets at the top, especially CJ [Chinthaka Jaysinghe and Tarek [Moughanie].” Laffan said all top four sides would be using the final round to try and work each other out. Depending on results, the Eagles could face Westmeadows in the first week of finals. A win could also see them hosting a home final. In other matches, Greenvale Kangaroos will look to finish their season on a high. Already assured of finishing bottom and being relegated, the Kangaroos have only pride to play for in the final round against PEGS. On Saturday, the Kangaroos were bowled out

for 159 with Matthew Kent top scoring with 48. PEGS was 3-57 at stumps. In division 1 west, it was a crazy day between Tullamarine and Spotswood, with all 20 wickets falling. The Demons bowled Spotswood out for
just 68 with David Zahorodni taking 6-31. The total would prove to be enough with Tullamarine bowled out for just 31. In division 5, Jacana is 0-6 in reply to Gellibrand’s 209.
Eltham Wanderers. The Wanderers made 134 before bowling the Bulls out for 104. In the Money Shield, the fight for finals spots will continue into the final round. Bundoora United enters the final round in first position, but need a win to ensure a home final. The Bulldogs on Saturday beat Old Paradians. The Bulldogs made 4-198 with skipper Mathew Ross top scoring with 57. They then bowled the Wolves out for 139. Lalor Stars had a good win to put themselves in the box seat for a finals spot. Playing Research Eltham Collegians, the Stars made 9-168 with Wayne Dow top scoring with 37. The Stars then restricted the Collegians to 126. The Stars sit third, six points clear of fourth and fifth, who both have a better percentage. In other results, Mill Park lost to Eltham and Mernda was defeated by Montmorency. Tara Murray
United’s FFA campaign over Bundoora United’s FFA Cup campaign came to an end in the toughest possible way on Saturday. Facing Hampton Park United Sparrows in the second round of qualifying, it was a penalty shootout that would decide the winner after scores were locked at 2-2 at the end of regular time. The Sparrows won the match 4-2 on penalties. Speaking before the match, coach Con Kiriakopoulos said they had wanted to match their FFA Cup of last season, when they were knocked out in round two, having won three matches. He said the FFA Cup was about getting some minutes into the legs of players, with the focus on bigger things later in the season. After finishing second in FV state league 5 north last season, United is focused on going one step further and earning promotion. Kiriakopoulos said they wanted to keep going up the grades to build a pathway for the juniors coming through. “Last year we were very disappointed. We believed that we were the best team all year, but certain things didn’t go our way. “Hopefully we can get promoted this year. We’ve got a few new players who have strengthened the squad.” There’s been minimal changes to United’s list with just three departures and four additions. Among those who have joined the club, there’s a couple of players coming with state league 1 experience. United has added to all parts of the ground as they hope to achieve that goal of going one step further. Kiriakopoulos said one of the big focuses of the group was to bring the young players through. The under-18s train with the reserves side, at the same time and ground as the senior team. He said they had an abundance of juniors. “In our first game against Bacchus Marsh we had one player that was 16 that played the last 20 minutes. “We want to get the young kids coming through and we want to promote them. “We might call them over and give them a go with the senior side.” In other results, Broadmeadows Stars is through to round one after a big 7-1 win against Mitchell Rangers.
