Shine a light on Footscray Footscray’s annual Lantern Festival will light up Nicholson Street Mall this Saturday. The festival will feature Vietnamese dancing, cultural music, a lion dance, games and crafts, along with lantern making and the colourful lantern parade. Vietnamese Community of Australia Victorian Chapter vice-president Vivian Nguyen said the festival was a superb way for people to learn more about and enjoy Vietnamese culture and traditions. “With a growing number of second-generation Vietnamese Australians, this type of event is important to ensure we continue to cultivate and celebrate Vietnamese culture here in Australia and showcase it to the wider community,” she said. The Lantern Festival will be held from 2-8pm on Saturday. BRUCE, 3

Homemaker site for sale By Benjamin Millar A prime redevelopment site in Maribyrnong is on the market. The Highpoint Homemaker Centre is up for sale, drawing expectations that it could sell for up to a record-smashing $80 million. The 4.6-hectare site, owned by Highpoint’s owner GPT, is home to major retail chain stores including Spotlight, Rebel and Barbecues Galore. Agents linked with the Homemaker Centre sale are highlighting the site’s redevelopment potential, noting that buildings of up to 10

levels are permitted. Recent developments in the vicinity have been permitted to go even higher, setting a precedent for future projects. The sale comes as the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest building approvals data shows Footscray had Victoria’s third highest number of apartment, townhouse and unit building approvals in the 2017-18 financial year, behind only the CBD and Southbank. The Homemaker Centre sale is being jointly handled by CBRE and Stonebridge. CBRE national director Mark Wizel said being part of the Highpoint Activity Centre, which designates a preferred height limit of six

to 10 levels, would provide flexibility. “Core assets and centres with development upside continue to be highly sought after, as they provide either income security or flexibility for an owner,” he said. “Highpoint Homemaker Centre provides both security and long-term redevelopment potential, which will appeal to a wide buyer pool.” The site is a stone’s throw from the much smaller 19-21 White Street site, where Maribyrnong council has approved a 12-storey development that will replace two large warehouses. The $80 million project, approved

in March, will include 268 dwellings above two retail tenancies. Apartment projects of up to 18 levels are underway on adjacent Wests Road and thousands more dwellings have been flagged for the nearby former defence site. Star Weekly has previously reported residents in the vicinity pushing back against high-density residential projects, raising concerns about carparking, building heights, open space and infrastructure. Expressions of interest in the Highpoint Homemaker Centre site close on Thursday, October 25.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

OUT AND ABOUT

We know there are people in our City who selflessly give back to the community and their efforts are often not sufficiently recognised. Through Council’s 2019 Civic Awards program we wish to ensure those who deserve to be celebrated for their generosity are. There are seven Civic Award categories – each with the ultimate goal to recognise those individuals, businesses and organisations that make significant contributions in our community and that enrich the lives of others.

The categories include: Citizen of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Youth Leadership; Community Strengthening; Enterprise Maribyrnong, Active Maribyrnong and the Arts Award. Last year, the coveted Citizen of the Year was awarded to Sr Jeanne Dwyer, who 17 years ago established Joseph’s Corner, a registered charity and not-for-profit community organisation in Yarraville that provides free counselling for families affected by substance abuse. Every year we unearth very deserving award nominees who either live, work, study or have some other strong connection to the City of Maribyrnong. Having lived in the City for all of my life, I know we owe a lot of gratitude to the many wonderful people who are continually working towards making our community the best place to live in Melbourne. If you know a local hero or wish to find out more about the Civic Awards please visit our website for the latest information: maribyrnong.vic. gov.au/civicawards

In supporting the progress of the arts in Maribyrnong, Council were excited to have recently endorsed a 5 year Arts and Culture Strategy. The Strategy has a focus on continuing to enhance the wellbeing and cohesion of our multicultural community, as well as economic development in the municipality. crutches and confined to bed rest for months and have had to take extended leave from my job. “My concern is equally for the community – that dog and that walker are still out there and someone else could experience a similar situation.”

A Seabrook man is urging pet owners to be aware of snakes after his dog was fatally bitten by a tiger snake last week. Steve Koehler said he came home about 2.30pm on Tuesday and noticed the house was quiet. “I noticed it was a bit quiet but sometimes Spike is outside asleep,” he said. “Then my wife came home about an hour later and … noticed he was just laying there. “She said, ‘Come on Spiky, come on’, and he wasn’t moving. She went and touched him and lifted his head and then she came running in and said to me, ‘Steve, I think Spike’s dead’, and I said, ‘No, he can’t be’.” Mr Koehler said a dead tiger snake was lying next to Spike. A Yarraville woman says she is devastated after being hospitalised with a broken leg as a result of a dog attack. Christina Hickie said she was with her kelpie-cross Elvis when two off-lead dogs approached them at the Warmies dog park in Newport on Friday, August 24. Ms Hickie said one of the two dogs, who were with a male dog walker, then rushed at her. “They were really menacing and aggressive and they were snapping and snarling at him [my dog],” she said. “My dog was absolutely cowering … it escalated really, really quickly. “One of the dogs, in particular, was so menacing and aggressive – I was too scared to even approach. “I called out to the guy who was walking the dogs. I yelled out, ‘Is that dog aggressive’, and he said, ‘Nah’.” Ms Hickie said one of the dogs, which was medium-sized and had a distinctive brindle pattern, suddenly turned on her. “The next thing I knew, the brindle dog that was really menacing just ran straight at me and basically charged me and took out my leg,” she said. “I was upended and I just landed on the ground and the impact broke my leg. “I was rolling around on the ground and then I was in absolute fear of my life that the dog was going to maul me. I had my hands over my head trying to protect my head and my face. “I was screaming for help and people came to my aid … it’s those people that I’m really hoping will come forward.” While the dog walker provided his details, witnesses are being sought as part of an ongoing investigation by Hobsons Bay council. Ms Hickie said that after the attack, a man and woman carried her to a second man’s car,

Petrol price review call

Bike park is the top pick

By Goya Dmytryshchak As petrol prices rose to a historic high of almost $1.70 a litre last week, a peak motoring lobby group is urging people to shop around. But an Altona Meadows resident is campaiging for cheaper petrol locally. Diana Grima, who has petitioned her local Coles Express for a petrol price review, said she would prefer to fill up close to home and support local businesses. She has been comparing the supermarket chain’s petrol prices with those of independent retailers and noticed higher prices across the board. “I think they’re doing it because they can and – guess what – it’s school holidays,” Ms Grima said. “We’re busy mothers or fathers or guardians – we don’t have time to go [further]. “I’ve got a baby, I’m working. Do you think I want to go out of my way? “That’s my family time. I’d like to support local – I’m not going to give up.” RACV public policy general manager Bryce Prosser said fuel was essential for many people so rises put household budgets under pressure. “In many cases, people living in outer suburbs have fewer choices when it comes to public transport so the only option they have is a car,” he said. “The petrol price hike will be an added burden for people facing cost-of-living pressures. “The price cycle is so volatile, it’s almost impossible to predict. “RACV’s advice for motorists is to shop around and use our fuel watch website to find the best value in their area or along their journey. discount voucher received when spending a minimum $30 in Coles supermarkets, customers can also save 10 cents per litre by spending a minimum $20 in Coles Express stores,” the spokesperson said. “The discounts can be used separately or combined.”

A $200,000 bike park will be built in West Footscray after attracting the most community votes from the area in the state government’s Pick My Project scheme. The first of its kind in Victoria, the park at Hansen Reserve will feature wide paths and riding challenges including hills, curves and bridges. The project – proposed by BikeWest to help children learn safe riding skills – received the highest level of funding available through the $30 million Pick My Project initiative. Announcing the funding at Hansen Reserve on Tuesday, Premier Daniel Andrews said 237 projects would receive funding ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 after more than 95,000 Victorians cast votes for their favourite local projects. “This is all about giving local communities a say over local projects, projects that benefit their local community where they have direct input,” he said. “Here it’s going to support a really unique facility so that local kids can learn how to ride their bikes safely.” BikeWest spokeswoman Megan Bridger-Darling said the group was excited. “We’re just a little group that started six months ago,” she said. “We’ve had overwhelming support from the community.” Benjamin Millar

Food truck recipe for residents By Benjamin Millar Plans are cooking for Maribyrnong’s first permanent food truck park. A permit application has been lodged for a site on Williamson Road in Maribyrnong to host a bar and seven food trucks, serving food and drinks for up to 400 people at a time. Plans for the 1960-square-metre site show seating areas, a shipping container converted into a bar and room for seven food trucks. The premises would operate 6-11pm on Thursday evenings and 10am-11pm Friday to Sunday, hosting occasional live music and the screening of major sports events. Food trucks have visited various locations around Maribyrnong for a number of years, particularly Coulson Gardens and Yarraville Gardens, but their numbers have dwindled since a permit system was introduced by Maribyrnong council in 2014. A proposal for a food truck park at the Dream Factory in Footscray was rejected in 2016 after the site was deemed to be too close to the Coode Island major hazard facility. A temporary park opened on a development site in Kingsville last summer, but if approved the new proposal would be the first long-term permanent site. A town planning report lodged with the application suggests the proposal would improve the area’s overall amenity for people working and living nearby by providing “an alternative area for people to meet and socialise”. The site has 11 carparking spaces, a shortfall of 58 spaces on planning requirements. A traffic report concluded the shortfall would only generate “a low impact” given a large number of on-street and public parking spaces in the vicinity.

Taking epilepsy in her stride Laverton’s Rozzini Kotsakis had her first epileptic seizure seven years ago during the birth of her son. “I had my very first seizure in the delivery suite,” she said. “I passed out while I was on the table and I was rushed for an emergency C-section and then I woke up in the middle of the night and Michael was born.” On Sunday, October 21, her family will join the inaugural Walk for Epilepsy at Princes Park in Carlton to raise awareness and funds for the Epilepsy Foundation. More than 60,000 Victorians are living with epilepsy, a disorder of brain function that involves recurring seizures. About 60 Victorians die each year as a result of their epilepsy, making it one of the top five causes of avoidable death among people aged 5-29. “I had another episode a couple of months after the birth,” Ms Kotsakis said. Finally, the seizures were able to be controlled through medication and lifestyle. “I’ve only had probably a handful of seizures all up and that was while I was trying to get the right dosage of medication for my body,” Ms Kotsakis said. Millions seized in raids By Benjamin Millar A gold gun and a $480,000 Lamborghini were among assets valued at $12 million seized in Australian Federal Police drug raids across Melbourne’s west. Five men have been charged after AFP investigators carried out 11 searches across nine suburbs in late September. An operation that began in May culminated in raids on properties in Yarraville, Footscray, Maidstone, Maribyrnong, St Albans, Delahey, Sunshine North, Truganina and Aberfeldie. The AFP seized a new silver Lamborghini Huracan sports car, a silver Mercedes Benz, firearms and cash. Officers also seized 4.175 kilograms of methamphetamine and 2.5 kilograms of heroin valued at more than $4.3 million, along with more than $200,000 in cash and encrypted phones. The AFP said members of the targeted drug syndicate were suspected of owning or controlling about $12 million in assets subject to seizure under the Proceeds of Crime Act. AFP state manager Amanda Kates said the operation sent a clear message to those “seeking to wreak havoc on our community with life-threatening illicit drugs”. “Not only could you spend your life behind bars, all your belongings including your house, car, and anything else used in the commission of a crime, or bought with the proceeds of crime, can be seized to satisfy Australia’s proceeds of crime and confiscation regime,” Commander Kates said A 33-year-old Maidstone man and a 33-year-old Footscray man have each been charged with two counts of trafficking a commercial quantity of a controlled drug. A 32-year-old Maribyrnong man and a 33-year-old Delahey man were charged with

one count each of trafficking in a commercial quantity of a controlled drug. A 33-year-old Truganina man has been charged with dealing in the proceeds of crime.

Investigations are continuing and additional arrests are expected. The four men charged with trafficking have been remanded in custody to appear in court on February 4.

Four years for robbery attacks A former Australian Schoolboy soccer player has been sentenced to four years in prison after trying to rob a Footscray restaurant with a syringe and later robbing a man of his car and cash. Albert Gavazovski, 45, was jailed for a minimum two and a half years after pleading guilty to one charge of robbery and of attempted armed robbery. The County Court last month heard the Altona Meadows man entered Poon’s Chinese restaurant on Barkly Street in Footscray about 9.30pm on April 20 last year, holding a syringe. He attempted to open the cash register before being accosted by restaurant owner Mr Kit So. The court heard Gavazovski pointed the syringe at Mr So and said: “Open the register and give me money or I will stab you.” On April 28 last year, Gavazovski climbed into the car of Hieu-Hanh Tran, saying that he had a knife and would cut Mr Tran’s throat if he didn’t do what he was told. He demanded money and took $370 from Mr Tran before forcing him to drive to Yarraville, repeatedly warning him to “do what I say or I cut your neck.” Gavazovski released Mr Tran near Williamstown Road, demanding his credit card and PIN. Gavazovski was last month sentenced to four years imprisonment, with a minimum period of two years and six months before he is eligible for parole. Benjamin Millar

The Victorian Government is removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Aviation Road, Laverton.

From its unassuming clinker-brick facade, there is little to suggest what lies behind the door of one of Altona’s quirkiest houses. The Temple of Mood at 27 Bell Avenue, which is listed for auction, boasts a totally unique style. It opens into a castle-style Grand Hall with iron chandeliers. There’s an Alice in Wonderland kitchen, complete with cast iron hot pink oven; a Moroccan-style master bedroom and main bathroom; an Enchanted Forest bedroom; a steampunk games room; a Harry Potter toilet; and an outdoor tiki bar and spa. Vendors Luke and Annabel have tailored every detail to their tastes and they hope to find a buyer who will love the house as much as they do. “It was already quite idiosyncratic,” Luke said. “The couple that we bought the place from were a German pirate and a Filipino princess, which is only a very slightly exaggerated description of them … as they said about the house, it’s a house of love, it’s a house that they love and it’s for people who love each other. “It’s never been a very ordinary house – it’s always been spectacular.” Luke said that before choosing Barlow McEwan Tribe, other real estate agents had almost uniformly advised them to tear everything down and make the house “bland”. Barlow McEwan Tribe’s Angus Scott-Walker said it was one of the more quirky houses he had come across in his life. “This particular one has got so many themes in it,” he said. “It’s going to attract a buyer who likes originality, and admittedly the current owners

have put their personality into the property. But it would be somebody that, if they don’t like everything, they can modify and alter what they would like to, just as Luke and Annabel did originally when they bought this house. It’s a great property for entertaining.” The price guide is $950,000-$1.045 million. The house is listed for auction on Sunday, October 21, at 1.30pm.

Seabrook, Altona selling at a trot Properties in Altona and Seabrook are selling quicker than this time last year, the latest Days on Market data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria shows. Properties in Seabrook sold 35 days faster this August compared with 2017 while those in Altona were on the market for 16 fewer days. In Seabrook, properties sold within 49 days this year and in Altona, within 32 days. REIV chief executive Gil King said Melbourne’s south west was becoming increasingly popular. “Properties are being snapped up in Altona and Seabrook much quicker than they were this time last year,” he said. “Both suburbs offer close proximity to the beach, Melbourne and Geelong CBDs and airports, and are well serviced with public recreational spaces. “The median house price in Altona has doubled in the past decade from $500,000 in June 2008 to more than $1 million in June 2018. “Homes in Seabrook are more affordable, with the median sitting at $580,000 in June 2016 compared with $348,000 in June 2008.” There was not a large enough sample of sales to establish a median for 2017 or 2018. Mr King said the 2016 data revealed higher property values in Altona may be contributing to lower home ownership in the suburb compared with Seabrook. “In Altona, 33 per cent of people own or have a mortgage on their home while 53 per cent rent,” he said. “Seabrook has a much higher proportion of home owners at 80 per cent, and 18.6 per cent of renters. “The median weekly rent in Altona has increased from $315 in June 2008 to $450 in June 2018, in Seabrook, it has gone from $300 to $383.” Goya Dmtryshchak

Teaching blocks a winner for VU By Benjamin Millar Victoria University’s teaching block model has been recognised with a state government education award. VU’s model of teaching subjects one at a time in intensive four-week blocks last week won the Excellence in International Education – University category of the Victorian International Education Awards. VU international director Bronte Neyland said the award win was recognition for the hard work put in by staff in the new First Year College and also reflected dramatically

improved results obtained by international students. “This award would not have been possible without the passion and commitment from these talented individuals,” she said. International student Akeisha Sandhu said being in small classes for four-week stretches helped in making friends and building connections with teachers. “Students are far better able to get to grips with a subject because we deep-dive into it, rather than jump from one to the other from morning to afternoon and day to day,” she said. The award came just days after more than

three in four VU staff voted not to accept management’s proposed new enterprise bargaining agreement. Of 1574 staff who took part in the vote, 77 per cent voted to reject the offer. National Tertiary Education Union VU branch president Paul Adams said VU management had sought to water down important rights such as job security, intellectual freedom and protection against arbitrary dismissal. “This comprehensive defeat shows that management’s attempt to impose this EBA on the workforce has completely failed,” he said.

“Their EBA was one of the worst proposals tabled by a university anywhere in this most recent round of bargaining.” A VU spokeswoman said intellectual freedom would be preserved and all protections against arbitrary dismissal would remain. “The best form of job security is belonging to a secure and sustainable organisation, and that’s what the proposed offer aims to ensure,” she said. “The university is currently surveying staff to elicit their feedback as to how we could reshape the proposed offer in line with their priorities, where possible, and within the existing financial envelope.”

Cheers to The Patron One of Footscray’s favourite founding fathers is being immortalised with his own brew. Brewery Hop Nation is teaming up with the Footscray Historical Society to release a new beer paying tribute to James Cuming, one of the area’s most important late 19th century figures. Dubbed ‘The Patron’, the mid-strenth session ale will be launched next week to coincide with the Society’s 50-year Jubilee celebration. Hop Nation co-owner Sam Hambour said the idea was to create a beer that resonated with the proud history of the area. “We ended up basing it on a character called James Cuming,” he said. “A patron is someone who used to take care of the community and get involved in the area – he hung around and helped out at a time where a lot of the guys who made money in the area would move out to a wealthier area.”

Cuming founded Cuming, Smith and Company, one of Australia’s first producers of fertilisers. He donated to almost every charitable institution in Footscray and Yarraville, as well as serving as chairman of Footscray Court, president of Footscray Football Club and mayor when Footscray was proclaimed a city in 1891. Mr Hambour said the collaboration had been a great way to learn more about the area’s history and characters such as Cuming. The Patron will be launched at the brewery on October 13 and served at the Footscray Historical Society’s Jubilee celebrations on October 21. “We are going to set up a stall for the Historical Society at the launch and we are sponsoring the jubilee,” Mr Hambour said. Council push for court support By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is urging ratepayers to join its push for the state government to contribute $9 million for the Altona Sports Centre expansion as part of the council’s 10 Victorian election priorities. The council is undertaking an $18.5 million four-court extension of the centre at Altona Meadows. Home to more than 30 clubs and 6400-plus registered players, the centre currently has six indoor basketball/netball courts and two outdoor netball courts.

Centre manager Glenn Wright said sometimes more than 80 teams a week were having byes and new teams were being turned away. “Everyone gets to miss a game every second or third week,” he said. “They can’t play regularly because we’ve just got no space. “If you can’t fit people in, they’ll go somewhere else. Basketball Victoria worked out that nearly 800 players from Hobsons Bay are playing in other municipalities.” Based on registrations in 2016, 54 per cent of basketballers and 44 per cent of netballers at the centre were Hobsons Bay residents.

Most remaining players came from adjoining municipalities, including 35 per cent from Wyndham and 10 per cent from Maribyrnong. Other top 10 priorities are more boat ramp funding, $20 million for sports infrastructure, more money for foreshore infrastructure, accelerating the Metro 2 rail tunnel, improved public transport, regional trails funding, climate resilience and carbon emissions reduction funding, a Newport Headspace centre and on and off ramps on the West Gate Tunnel at Grieve Parade and Dohertys Road. Sports on a winner The state government has announced $250,000 funding towards a $1 million project at Newport’s Digman Reserve that will benefit local cricket and soccer clubs. The money will be used to redevelop the eastern playing field and install floodlights, enabling the home ground of Gellibrand Cricket Club to be used by Barnstoneworth United Football Club in winter. Gellibrand’s president Lee Smart said that work to smooth out the field would benefit cricket as much as soccer. “It will make the ground more suitable to play cricket on because at the moment it’s quite rough and it undulates a lot,” he said. The government also announced $239,745 funding towards a $479,490 lighting upgrade at Yarraville’s Angliss Reserve, allowing more use by Footscray Lacrosse Club and further training opportunities for neighbouring

Yarraville Glory Soccer Club. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the money was provided through the community sports infrastructure fund. “Congratulations to our local councils and clubs – this boost will go a long way to supporting the growing number of people keen to get involved in local sport,” he said. “It’s a great example of how we’re making sport and recreation more accessible, welcoming and inclusive for locals in Melbourne’s west. “These are wonderful projects that will be delivered in partnership with our local councils.” Goya Dmytryshchak Gellibrand Cricket Club president Lee Smart with club players. (Joe Mastroianni)

Look forward to no more trucks on local roads. We’re building a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge. It will slash congestion and allow Victorians to get moving again. The West Gate Tunnel Project will: • widen the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes • provide direct access from the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne • create 6,000 jobs.

He met the woman he’d later marry, Hedwig, on the boat to Australia and the two enjoyed life together in Footscray before she passed away 10 years ago. However, life hasn’t always been easy for Mr Smolen. When Nazi Germany occupied his country, Mr Smolen joined the resistance. After the Gestapo discovered his allegiance he spent about three years in the infamous concentration camp Auschwitz. Mr Smolen said he joined the resistance for the love of his country. Prison for violent crime spree By Goya Dmytryshchak A Noble Park man has been sentenced to five years and two months jail for an armed robbery spree, including at McDonald’s restaurants in Altona Meadows and Laverton North where he terrorised staff with a hammer. The man, now 19, pleaded guilty in the County Court to 11 charges. The court heard that in the early hours of December 12, 2016, the man and three co-offenders armed with a firearm, machete and hammer committed five armed robberies and an attempted armed robbery.

In one robbery, the man and two co-offenders entered Laverton North McDonald’s about 3am, robbing staff and grabbing about $1500 from the tills. An accomplice stood over staff holding a firearm while the man ran to the office area where a female staff member was. He raised the hammer above his head and yelled, “Where is the money, where is the safe, open the safe, open the safe”. He stole her handbag before moving to the drive-through window register and threatening the attendant with a hammer while demanding he open the register.

The man returned to the office where he filled his bag with more coins, telling the female worker to “shut the f… up”. In the robbery at Altona Meadows McDonald’s on February 8, 2017, the man and three unknown co-offenders forced their way into the restaurant about 3.45am. He confronted three workers with the hammer and demanded money and mobile phones. A male co-offender punched the male worker in the face and dragged him by the hair to the front counter to open the tills. They left with cash, car keys, a wallet, handbag and phones.

The man was arrested at Noble Park the same day. The court heard he had a record stretching back to 2015 for robbery, car theft, handling stolen goods, property damage, assault, affray, cannabis possession, committing an indictable offence while on bail and other offences, but had no prior convictions and had avoided jail. The court heard in the victim statements that many were unable to sleep, had anxiety, difficulty working at night and, in some cases, were unable to work for various periods of time. The man will be eligible for parole after serving two and a half years jail.

Trike back in safe hands about the trike on Bike Vault. Her post was shared almost 2000 times, and the trike was eventually found five weeks later at a second-hand store in Melton. “It’s hard to know why it was shared so many times, but I’m guessing because it’s a customised trike for someone with a disability – that would’ve touched a chord with a lot of people. “Not being able to ride made me miss it too much. “The trike enables me, obviously, to get out and participate. “I used to ride a lot prior to my stroke and what I’ve missed the most since the stroke is the ability to get out and enjoy the outdoors.” Ms Forber is back on the road again after recently being reunited with her trike.

(Dennis Manktelow)

For more than a decade, Kerrie Forber couldn’t enjoy the outdoors. A stroke when she was 28-years-old left her paralysed on the left side of her body, which affected her mobility and dexterity. After years of research and saving, the Braybrook woman bought a trike five years ago and had it custom-fit – it was her ticket back to independence. However, on July 30, she was grounded again when the $5000 trike was stolen for a second time from the underground carpark of her apartment. There had also been two other attempts to steal it. “It was like looking for a needle in a haystack,” Ms Forber said.“Where do you start to look?” Ms Forber said she was “totally reliant” on the public’s goodwill to recover the trike. She reached out to the online world, posting

MY PLACE Friends of Cruickshank Park chairperson Michael Worth loves the “little urban oasis” of the park, pledging to do everything he can to help the park and Stony Creek return to full health following a recent warehouse fire. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Yarraville?

began a Junior Park Rangers program so the young children in the area get a sense of doing something for the park.

My wife and I came to Yarraville over 30 years ago from the south eastern suburbs, initially because of the cheap house prices, but we soon grew to love the diverse community and the local spirit. We also loved the proximity to the city and with the freeways nearby the easy access to so many parts of Victoria. I have been involved with various community groups over this time, including seven years on the Yarraville Festival Committee and over 15 years as a member of The Lions Club of Footscray. We have lived in four different houses around the Yarraville Village and Kingsville, but we currently live in what we consider our best location, abutting Cruickshank Park.

What has been the impact of the recent fire on the park? Unfortunately the recent fire in Brooklyn has had a catastrophic impact on the creek. The contamination of the water has basically killed all living things in the creek, sadly including the frog population that had been building up in the last few years. There has also been a huge impact on the creek banks and vegetation in the creek. This damage has also seen a huge drop in people using the park. What are the next steps for its recovery?

We are so fortunate to have this wonderful local asset at our doorstep and we love its natural plantings and established trees and Stony Creek as it runs through the park. It is a wonderful way to start the day, taking a walk in the park with Trevor our Labrador, and we feel so lucky to have made our home alongside this little urban oasis. Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time? We love seeing a movie at The Sun, market shopping and eating in Footscray, and we love all the cafes, bars and eateries in the Yarraville and Seddon villages. A glass of wine at Barkley Johnson or early dinner at Café Terroni or

What can you tell us about the Friends of Cruickshank Park?

We have been involved in FOCP for 10 years, joining a few months after we moved to this area, and for the last two years I have been the chairperson. We became involved to help maintain and improve the park as it is such a wonderful asset and we like to help give back to the community where we can. The Friends of Cruickshank Park is a small group of locals that liaise with Maribyrnong council and Melbourne Water on ways to help keep Cruickshank Park looking its best. We try to be the eyes and ears of the park and a voice for its many users.

In conjunction with the council, Friends of Stony Creek, Melbourne Water and the EPA are discussing plans to clean up the creek and its banks using the most environmentally friendly means possible, but also in a way that does the best job possible. This will take a while, possibly up to five years. It will also be a very costly exercise financially and we will be working to ensure adequate funds are allocated to the clean-up and recovery process. All of the groups and agencies are upset by the devastation this fire has caused and we have all pledged to give it our all until the creek is returned to full health. All of the friends groups are also working together with a determination to ensure an incident like this can never again occur in Stony Creek or in any other Melbourne metropolitan waterway.

In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool.2

WILLIAMSTOWN 102 Bayview Street, 3016

WILLIAMSTOWN NORTH 115 Park Crescent, 3016

Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000 Auction: October 13 at 1.30pm

Gunn & Co: 9397 5555 Price: $1.15 million – $1.25 million Auction: October 27 at 2.30pm

Price: $1.4 million – $1.5 million

Within a 10-minute stroll of Williamstown Beach and five of several good schools, this house – built when they were made to last – is very well maintained but would respond beautifully to an update. Perhaps the block size and location will prompt a rebuild or multi-development, STCA, because the potential is there. The house has four fitted bedrooms, main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry running along the south side; the main bedroom has a walk-in robe and en suite. A carpeted lounge-dining room links with an expansive cork-floored meals room and, through bifolds, a family room. The big kitchen has stacks of timber cupboards and all mod-cons. Included are ducted heating, split-system, manicured lawn areas, established gardens and a large garage accessed from the rear lane.

On about 790 square metres, in a sought-after pocket, this house is ripe for full renovation – or it can be knocked down to start again or use the site to develop, STCA. Opposite a large park, the block has a 14.33-metre frontage, measures 17.68-metres along the back and is about 50 metres deep. If the house remains, there’s abundant room to drop in a pool. The house has three bedrooms (one with robe), a large lounge room, a basic but functional kitchen abutting a meals area, a bathroom and laundry. A shed in the backyard serves as a lock-up garage, and off-street parking is not an issue. Close to schools, shops and transport, the property is all about what it can become.

Price: $1.35 million – $1.45 million

In a great spot – Cherry Lake five minutes by foot, WG Cresser Reserve a bit further and the station three minutes by bike – this beautifully kept classic brick veneer is loaded with appeal for a family wanting to further enhance great bones. The block of about 535 square metres has subdivision potential, STCA, while rent would be about $450 a week. There are three fitted bedrooms sharing separate toilet and a recently revamped bathroom with a walk-in shower. A carpeted, spacious lounge room has a gas heater set in a brick surround, as well as double doors to the meals area and kitchen. White cabinetry, dishwasher and electric appliances are in the bright kitchen. A large sunroom accesses a rear covered pergola that faces concrete paving and pretty cottage gardens. Included are evaporative cooling, polished floorboards and a carport behind gates.

Dressed for success, this residence oozes a style that lives up to its wonderful location: Williamstown Beach and High School are within a four-minute stroll and Dennis Reserve is at the end of the street. The four fitted bedrooms are up top, the large main with a luxe en suite. The matching main bathroom, with the addition of a freestanding tub, has a gorgeous floating vanity, walk-in shower and designer toilet. The downstairs expansive living hub, anchored by lovely floorboards, incorporates a fab kitchen. An entertainers’ and cooks’ delight, this has seamless charcoal cabinetry, an island bench topped with stone and timber, a walk-in pantry and the full suite of Miele appliances. A partially covered north-facing deck out back looks out to lush turf and perimeter plantings, and there’s a fire pit area with wooden seating.

NEWPORT 43 Elphin Street, 3015 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000

Price: $2.15 million - $2.25 million

This beautiful Victorian has been so well renovated you’ll be hard-pressed to fault it. Built with family at front-of-mind, every best-practice style and structural choice you could think of has been employed resulting in the wow factor, yet it still oozes that contemporary Australian, understated feel. A wide hall with super high, square-set ceilings look chic right off the bat. The main bedroom to the right is just the right size, with grey carpeting, a good-sized walk-in robe and impressive en suite with bathing zone encompassing a huge frameless shower with a free standing

plunge bath installed next to it in a clever design trick. Simple additions such as the 2pac floating cabinets keep it all understated; it all feels very easy to live in. The study is gorgeous with a generous fireplace and bespoke timber desk and matching floating shelf that run the length of the wall. Under the stairs find a cleverly concealed powder room, blending the contemporary perfectly with modern finishes set against a white matte pressed metal feature honouring the house’s original period. The open-plan kitchen, dining and

lounge areas that follow are everything you’d want. A big thick stone kitchen bench with a modern in-set aluminium twin sink and seating for the whole family complements white 2pac storage as well as a huge butler’s pantry with enough room for every appliance and so much more. The laundry is standout too, with rear access to the concrete aggregate drive for three cars and the single remote-access garage. The media room is carpeted and large. Out the back is an in-ground pool with frameless glass safety fence with a patch

of lawn to the side. Up the wide timber stairs with glass balustrade find two more carpeted bedrooms with contemporary flat-fronted built-in robes, a main bathroom which is child-friendly as well as a third living area which would make a great children’s retreat. Sure to impress, this property is set on a pretty street in the heart of Newport, bay side of Melbourne Road and close to schools and the train. Samantha Freestone

A survey shows that more Australians think cosmetic renovations will get the best price for a property, rather than waiting for the market to peak. It also revealed that millennials and baby-boomer vendors have very different views on property sales. The findings, in a survey of 1000 Australian adults commissioned by www. localagentfinder.com.au, also compared ‘staging’ a house with furnishings, agent skills, and setting the right reserve price. More property owners (31 per cent) saw cosmetic renovations as key to a good sales price, compared with just 25 per cent who believed selling during the peak of the property cycle was the best tactic. Within the survey group, a greater proportion of millennials – 39 per cent – saw cosmetic renovations as key, while only 22 per cent of baby boomers agreed. Respondents over 60 were more likely to choose selling at the peak of the property cycle as the best tactic. Executive officer of the well-known online real estate website Matt McCann says vendors in the over-60s age bracket have usually held onto their properties through a couple of market cycles, so their perception is probably based on what they have witnessed over the years. “Millennials haven’t lived through many cycles but have seen how renovations have translated into sales success through television shows and in the media, which may indicate why they believe that renovations are more likely to secure a top price,” he said. “It also motivates them to buy what they can afford, because they know they can give something a modern update and use their profits to move up a price bracket on their next purchase.” Results in the survey show choosing the right reserve ranked as a low concern.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds no problems at Houston’s Keilor Park, home of the Star Weekly office, is on the edge of a sprawling area of inter-connected industrial estates hugging Melbourne Airport. Around here, there appears to be a tradies-style cafe on almost every block. Good food? Way more sparse. That is why the opening of a bona fide barbecue joint just around the corner from our office – a two-minute walk, no need to get in the car – seemed so surreal. Still does. Houston’s Barbecue is located in the premises of Fury and Son Brewing Company. And it’s open only on Fridays. Initial visits left very mixed impressions. For example, brisket burgers and beef hot dogs that were OK – but not really nailing it. I can sympathise. This is a new operation – a very unique one, operating in an unusual (to say the least) location. Some fine-tuning, tweaking and settling-in time has definitely been in order. I returned a couple of weeks ago – and was mightily impressed. The menu has been constantly revised. But the introduction of substantial – and, yes, pricier – platters has seen Houston’s Barbecue reach new heights. A platter of brisket and smoked sausage was superb. Two hunka-chunka slices of wonderful spicy-crusted brisket. An excellent cheesy,

HOUSTON’S BARBECUE Address: 46 Concorde Drive, Keilor Park Phone: 0434 434 303 greasy smoked sausage. Just the right amount of good coleslaw and pickles. And – oh, yes – none of that brioche nonsense; instead, two slices of perfect white, sliced bread in true barbecue joint fashion. Entirely delicious – and worth every cent of the $18 I paid. Returning a week later, I have an even better time. For CTS purposes, I am happy to splash out in a way I hope doesn’t become too much of a weekly habit! The beef short rib conglomeration costs $25 and it’s a doozy. The chips are just OK. Slaw and pickles as previously enjoyed. And I would’ve appreciated that white, sliced bread again. But forget all that – what about the meat? My single, hefty rib is amazingly good. Less fatty than many barbecue beef ribs I have eaten, it’s meat is tender, plentiful and heavenly. The spicy crust might be too salty for some tastes, but I love that as well. As for doubts about the commercial viability of the singular location and one-day-a-week opening hours, I couldn’t be happier to observe that Houston’s Barbecue is a hit. In industrial Keilor Park. How about that?

Bulldogs have become one of the go-to clubs to introduce hockey to people with disabilities. Footscray’s other main focus is its outreach program, with an emphasis on growing the

sport in Vietnam. With Footscray’s rich Vietnamese heritage, the Bulldogs provide sports administration skills, equipment and uniforms for the Ho Chi Minh City Hockey Association. Footscray’s junior program supports the West Welcome Wagon, donating food and other non-perishable items to asylum-seeking families living in Melbourne’s west. Some local players were also acknowledged for their starring roles on the field. Carly James, Olivia Colasurdo and Sarah Breen and Altona’s Danielle Schubach were named in the women’s premier league all-star team, while Footscray’s Casey Hammond and Altona’s Andrew Scanlon made the men’s premier league all-star team. Footscray’s Phil Merriman was named coach of the year in the men’s premier league. Lance Jenkinson

Young star is a major hit By Lance Jenkinson All roads lead to the United States for Newport Rams rising baseball star Nikau Pouaka-Grego. The ultimate dream for the young infielder is to make it to the Major League. He is so far on the right track to fulfilling that quest in what has been an impressive junior career. Pouaka-Grego represented Australia at the recent U15 Baseball World Cup in Panama. He is just 13 years old, playing against opponents who were more experienced and further ahead in their physical development. It did not deter Pouaka-Grego, who thrived on the big stage, featuring in some big wins with the Australian team over the likes of South Africa, China and Germany. It was an unforgettable experience for the enthusiastic youngster, who played at second base. “It was awesome,” he said. “I got to play against some of the top prospects from around the world and I got to see how other countries play baseball. “It’s an honour to represent my country. “You try to do everybody proud.” Pouaka-Grego’s success at second base was linked to building a good rapport with the shortstop. The pair of infielders were on the same wave length more often than not. “Me and our shortstop were close, we were tight,” he said. “It was easy to work out with each other on the field. “We pulled off some nice double plays and the game becomes easier when you’re up the middle with someone you can work with.” Pouaka-Grego had a fine tournament in the batters box. He finished with an average of .400 with four hits from 10 at bats, while also drawing an impressive five base on balls and had two stolen bases. “I hit pretty good,” Pouaka-Grego said. “I got a few hit by pitches and some walks, so I got on base a lot for the players behind me to drive me in.” The chance to work with some great coaches was another highlight for Pouaka-Grego. He learnt so much from head coach Andrew Kyle and his assistants Mark Pettitt, Brian Murphy and Grant Weir. “Everybody learnt something different about their own game,” Pouaka-Grego said. “We’ve got some new things we’ve got to improve on. “They were awesome to be around.” It was certainly not Pouaka-Grego’s first experience in the green and gold. The Williamstown High School student has featured in the under 12 national team in the past three world series played in the US.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ No surprises with the crowning of the best and fairest awards at Williamstown and Werribee VFL clubs last week. The Seagulls’ much decorated midfielder Michael Gibbons added a Gerry Callahan medal to his trophy cabinet, while Sam Collins confirmed his status as one of the best outside the AFL, winning the Bruce Montgomery trophy. Both should be in different colours in 2019 as they certainly warrant a spot on an AFL list. They won’t be the only state league players in the spotlight, with Werribee’s Josh Corbett highly regarded and almost certain to be picked up and Footscray’s Will Hayes emerging as a possible recruit. It is hard to gauge what AFL clubs are looking for but it is good to see the blinkers are off and VFL football is getting the respect it deserves as a strong competition developing players who are ready to go in the AFL. ■ The 2018 grand final did not turn out to be the fairytale ending to the season Brody Mihocek would have liked, but what a great year he had. The former Port Melbourne and Werribee VFL player got his opportunity and made the most of it, becoming a vital cog in the Collingwood tilt at the flag. In recent years Kane Lambert, Liam Picken and Dale Morris have tasted AFL premiership success after doing the hard yards at VFL level. Talk about the future of the VFL is always fuelled by the desire of the AFL clubs and their reserves agenda. Maybe it is time to look at it from a different perspective and take into account the role played by the five stand-alone VFL clubs and the players emerging there. ■ Football has a few presentation nights to finish the season, with the WRFL Barry Priest medal to be presented this week, but cricket and racing now take the spotlight. Werribee’s international horse centre will be the focus of a lot of attention, with the overseas horses again expected to be prominent in the big races of the spring. Werribee Football Club has a pre Cox Plate lunch at Chirnsides by the River @ Avalon Airport Oval featuring Matt Hill, Troy Corstens, Greg Carpenter and Brad Spicer on Thursday, October 25 (bookings on 9741 6688). The Werribee Racing Club will host the International Breakfast with the Stars on Thursday, November 1 with Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mick Kinnane and a racing panel (bookings on 97411800). While in the US, he has taken the chance to see seven major league baseball games, perhaps picturing himself on the field in the future. Last month, Pouaka-Grego strutted his stuff in front of the baseball talent scouts at a Major League Baseball invitational tournament in Lismore. “There was a bunch of scouts there and some ABL coaches,” Pouaka-Grego said. “It was good to showcase our skills and see how everybody else played.” Pouaka-Grego has his sights set on Victorian under-age representation in the short term, while further down the track he is keen to

secure a sporting scholarship at a college in the US. Pouaka-Grego is the October nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Pouaka-Grego will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sporting goals.

Footscray Hockey Club has taken out the prestigious Hockey Victoria community club of the year award. The Bulldogs beat out more than 60 clubs to take out the honour at Hockey Victoria’s night of nights last month. The award is for excellence in community development work. Footscray is a massive club with 620 players and 53 winter season teams, including teams ranging from under-6 to over 50s. Brendan Sheehan, who has been involved with the Bulldogs for more than 40 years, said the club was “well aware” of its responsibility to the community. Footscray has focused on three key areas as part of its inclusion and diversity charter. The Bulldogs run focus weekends, which promote men’s health, women in sport and anti-homophobia. Their hockey-for-all approach includes an access all abilities program and as a result the

From Keilor junior to AFL flag joy In only his 15th AFL game, Daniel Venables got to experience the exhilaration of winning an AFL premiership. The Keilor junior and Western Jets product had to pinch himself in the rooms after the West Coast Eagles’ win as it all felt a bit surreal. “It’s a dream come true,” Venables said. “No words can really explain it. It’s just an awesome feeling.” Venables shared a special moment out on the ground with teammate Liam Duggan. They were once teammates at the Western Jets and reunited when Venables was drafted in 2016. “I got a photo with him with both of us being from the Jetters,” Venables said. “It’s awesome for us two. I played a bit of juniors with him and now I’ve won an AFL flag with him.” What a day it was for the Western Jets’ program. Three Jets alumni featured on AFL grand final day, but there were both cheers and tears. The pain was all on Collingwood forward Will Hoskin-Elliott, inconsolable after his 100th AFL game was ruined by a late match-winning goal from West Coast’s Dom

Sheed. But Hoskin-Elliott, 25, did himself and the western suburbs proud on the big day. He finished with 18 disposals, five marks and a goal. It was a break-out year for Hoskin-Elliott, who recorded 42 goals for the season.

Premiership medal or not, Hoskin-Elliott will continue to be revered at his local club, North Sunshine. The day, however, belonged to Duggan, Venables and the Eagles’ 22.

Venables had a big finals series for West Coast, but was quiet in the grand final with just four possessions. When the final siren went, the stats mattered little as he had become an AFL premiership player. “I was on the bench at the final siren and we just started bolting on to the field,” he said. “We went pretty crazy. You play footy to win a flag and we’ve just won one.” After joyously celebrating with a “fair crew” of friends and family in the Eagles’ changerooms, Venables harked back to where it all began. “It was awesome growing up and playing all my junior footy at Keilor,” he said. “It’s a great program down there and there’s a fair crew of Keilor boys running around in the AFL. “I’d like to thank the Western Jets, Keilor and Essendon Grammar for the opportunities they gave me.” Venables was a finalist of the Don Deeble Rising Star award in 2016. Eagle spreads the joy By Lance Jenkinson Amid the euphoria of winning an AFL premiership with the West Coast Eagles, rebounding defender Liam Duggan allowed his mind to wander back to his long journey to the MCG to play on that last Saturday in September. Duggan fondly recalled his junior career, one that was filled with plenty of hype as he dominated for Bacchus Marsh in the juniors, Western Jets in the TAC Cup and as captain of the St Patrick’s College before being selected by the Eagles with pick 11 in the 2014 AFL National Draft. “They all had a huge influence on me,” said Duggan after the Eagles pipped Collingwood by five points in an epic 2018 AFL grand final. “I was lucky enough to go through with a good bunch of boys and lifelong mates and coaches.” Some kids struggle to adapt to life at an interstate club, but Duggan was considered almost a sure thing to make a smooth

transition. Now 21 and with 70 games under his belt, Duggan is showing all the leadership qualities he possessed at the Jets. In the course of the conversation, it would have been easy to conclude Duggan was a 200-game veteran. “I suppose I’ve taken on a little bit of a [leadership] role,” he said. “We’ve got such a young list now that at the age of 21, I’m almost middle of the range. “It’s great to have so many young boys around – and I’m still in that category, I think.” Duggan made the move to Perth a success with the blessing and support of his family. As soon as the Eagles’ song was sung with his teammates, Duggan made a hasty retreat to celebrate with his loved ones. He was all smiles as he embraced girlfriend Lauren, mum Neisha, dad James, younger brother Josh and other relatives. It was a moment Duggan will cherish forever. “This is for them standing right there,” he said, glancing to his premiership medal before looking over his left shoulder to his family.

“They’ve been there right from the start and I owe a lot to them. “They ride the highs and lows with you and they’ll definitely be riding this high with us. “It’s great to come back and play in front of them and enjoy it with them.” Duggan hardly put a foot wrong in the grand final, amassing 16 disposals, seven marks and three tackles. Only slight in stature, he is always willing to put his body on the line. His driving left foot out of the back half gains valuable metres for his team. With a defence blessed with aerial specialists such as Jeremy McGovern, Tom Barrass, Will Schofield and Shannon Hurn, Duggan is a crucial point of difference. “We’ve got a pretty special crew [in the defence], so I’m over the moon about doing it with them,” he said. “To do it with this bunch of boys we’ve got, it’s huge, it’s unbelievable. “I’m going to be on a high for a long time, I think.”

Daniel Venables described the stunning West Coast Eagles comeback to win the AFL grand final by five points over Collingwood as “crazy”. The young forward said the manner of the win, having to fight back from 29 points down early in the match, added an extra dimension to victory. “We were just happy to win,” Venables said. “It just makes it that much better having to come from behind today. “It’s just awesome, a good experience.” Young defender Liam Duggan paid tribute to West Coast’s resilience. When Collingwood banged on the opening five goals of the grand final, few would have predicted the Eagles to come back and win. As the game wore on, the Eagles got stronger and it was all to do with their ability to stay the course. “They jumped us at the start, that’s for sure,” Duggan said. “We were probably a bit rattly early on, but we kept pegging them back and got to the fourth quarter with scores level. “It’s a grand final and you’ve just got to hang in there.” Duggan felt like West Coast had all the momentum at three-quarter time. Even when Collingwood kicked the first two goals of the last quarter, the Eagles belief did not wane. “I felt like we had momentum, but we just couldn’t bloody get the score on the board,” Duggan said. “We got our opportunity in the last couple of minutes and we knew it might take that long to break them, but we did.” Then came the moment that will be talked about in the same reverence as Leo Barry’s mark, Matthew Scarlett’s toe poke and Tom Boyd’s long goal, the game sealing goal from West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed. Tight up on the boundary and with barely any daylight between the goal posts from the angle where Sheed was taking his set shot, the left footer went back with a sweetly timed drop punt and pierced the middle for the victory. “The iceman Dom Sheed gets one late and everyone erupts,” Duggan said with a big smile. “He’s gone the drop punt as well.” Lance Jenkinson
