Eid festival returns

Excitement is in the air as Sunshine Mosque gears up to host its annual Ramazan Eid Festival, promising a day filled with joy and celebration for the entire community.

The festival boasts an array of attractions, including amusement rides for kids and adults, games, and more than 30 pop-up stalls showcasing traditional Turkish food, clothing, candles, and toys.

Event organiser and president of Sunshine Mosque Youth, Yusuf Mustafa, said the festivities will also include roaming character mascots, face painting, henna artistry, an animal farm, a jumping castle, and treats such as coffee and fairy floss.

Having been a tradition for more than two decades, Mr Mustafa said he anticipates about 4000 attendees throughout the day.

“This is one of our biggest Eid festivals we’ve ever had, hosted by the Sunshine Mosque and Sunshine Mosque Youth,” he said. “The festival is open to everyone, it’s for the whole community, all races and religions.”

Attendees can look forward to cultural showcases, including a Turkish Ottoman marching band, folk dancing, and performances by local schools.

The Ramazan Eid festival will take place on Sunday, April 28, from 10am-4pm at 618 Ballarat Road, Ardeer.

Sports funding secured

It was touch and go for KSC when at a council meeting on March 19, council officers recommended that the $550,000 funding promise made in principle last year for the club’s expansion of the social club rooms should not go ahead due to financial risk.

However, KSC president Hayden Kelly said the club was “more than happy” after a final

decisionwasreachedatthemostrecentcouncil meeting on April 16, for council to provide the $550,000 funding towards the project.

“It’s only taken us seven years since we first started talking to council,” Mr Kelly said.

The $550,00 funding follows from the allocation of $150,000 from council, along with a $700,000 contribution from the state government, to upgrade the kitchen and toilets at KSC.

Mr Kelly said funding from the state government and council will allow the club to bring it’s facilities “up to standard”.

“Currently we haven’t got enough space to

accommodate all our members. Our toilets and kitchen are third world country stuff, so this funding will help us accommodate our members and hopefully attract more participants as we go forward, and continue to grow year on year,” he said.

Councillor Maria Kerr said council’s investment in the club will benefit the community.

“… I want to acknowledge all the work that went into this project. It just shows you that when sports clubs, the state government, and council all work together we can really deliver some great infrastructure for

Brimbank,” she said.

Council will provide KSC with funding of $550,000 in 2024-25, subject to the club-appointedbuildersuccessfullycompleting a corporate scorecard report.

Previously, council cited concerns of a cost blowoutfortheproject, andnoteda“significant risk” to council if KSC is unable to afford the delivery of the project within its $2.65 million budget.

As part of it’s funding commitment, council will require KSC guarantors to provide bank guarantees of $650,000 prior to the commencement of construction.

$58m Brimbank works program

Brimbank residents can expect an average rate rise of 2.75 per cent and more than $58 million worth of improvements in the municipality under Brimbank council’s proposed 2024-25 budget.

During a meeting on April 16, council announced a proposed operating budget of $263.2 million to fund 76 diverse services for the community, which includes a capital works program of $58.7 million to provide upgrades to a range of infrastructure and facilities in the municipality.

The proposed capital works budget includes $27.9 million for roads and drainage upgrades; $5.2 million for playgrounds, parks and gardens; $2.1 million on walking and cycling paths; $18.8 million on improvements to community facilities including sports and early learning facilities; $0.9 million on assets including $800,000 for library books; and $3.8 million for the cyclical replacement of plant and vehicle fleet.

Next financial year council proposes to spend an increased amount of $17.6 million, on parks and trees across the municipality as well as $4.6 million towards environmental

sustainability and conservation, $10.7 million for road maintenance and cleansing services, $3.4 million on statutory planning and, $2.6 million for animal management across Brimbank.

Council said the state government’s introduction of a cap on rate increases in 2016-17hassinceposed“significantchallenges” to the way services and infrastructure are funded and delivered. Council said the cap for 2024-25 has been set at 2.75 per cent, and is set “well below” the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Kealba landfill court delay

TheEnvironmentProtectionAuthority’s (EPA) criminal prosecution case against Barro Group and its directors, which was scheduled for court on April 15, has been adjourned to May 28.

The Barro Group was banned from operating its landfill site in Kealba early last year due to failures to address its odour problems.

The Barro Group has had its licence suspended since September, 2021, due to the landfill causing odour impacts locally.

The decision meant Barro could no longer accept waste at the landfill.

EPA Victoria said the decision to cancel the licence followed assessment of information Barro Group provided in response to a show cause notice issued by EPA on October 28, 2022.

As reported by Star Weekly , underground fires have been burning at the site for more than three years, with Barro missing several deadlines to put the fires out.

EPA Victoria said it continues to receive very few odour reports and did not detect any odour during its most recent inspection in March.

EPA Victoria said it will continue to inspect the site and provide these email updates monthly to keep residents informed.

Residents are urged to use the EPA’s dedicated hotline for residents to report odour.

“Everyone who participates will get a tribute card. We encourage people to wear the tribute card on their back so as you’re walking and running you’re able to reflect on the tribute of the person in front of you.”

Green Gully upgrade scrapped

The final buzzer has once again sounded on the future of long-awaited upgrades to Green Gully Reserve.

At a meeting on April 16, Brimbank council again deliberated on the ‘Green Gully reserve northern precinct enhancement plan’ and determined not to proceed with the planned sports facilities at the site.

Over the last four financial years, council has spent more than $2 million on the project. In 2022, council extended the project timeline by an additional 12 months, with a revised completion date of June, 2025.

Councillor Maria Kerr said she was “appalled” by the decision.

“Tonight the biggest losers are in the north of Brimbank. The residents of Keilor Downs, the residents of Kealba, the residents of Keilor,

the residents of Sydenham … it seems to me we’re always being put last on this council, ” she said.

“I’m very disappointed because we have spent $2 million of ratepayers money and we haven’t been able to deliver anything for that money.”

Cr Bruce Lancashire said there was a growing need for sports facilities in Brimbank as the population continues to grow.

“Wehaveseensportingfacilityaftersporting facility cancelled, and proposals that really we don’t expect to ever see, proposed which will not compensate for these losses,” he said.

“[This] is just a real step backwards from ‘community first’, and a real step backwards in terms of sporting facilities. This is a dreadful loss – a dreadful shame.”

Upgrades to the site were set to include a range of facilities that were recommended for

inclusion to provide additional sporting and recreational opportunities for the Brimbank community.

Proposedfacilitiesincludedaseniorsizeoval to cater for numerous sports, a multi-purpose pavilion with two change rooms, sports lighting, coaches boxes, high ball protection fencing, 100 space car parking, a picnic and playground area, pathway network, as well as a road extension (McRae Boulevard).

Council said it has determined the project to betoocostlyandtoocomplexafteritdiscovered Aboriginal artefacts at the site which could potentiallyblowthecostestimateoftheproject from $16.15 million to $17.70 million

Council noted there may be some future community use of the site, which can be referred to council’s ‘creating better parks open space and playground policy and plan’ for consideration.

A ‘global celebration’ in St Albans

Locals are invited to immerse themselves in a celebration of cultural diversity as the Buddhist of the West Cultural Diversity Festival returns to the St Albans Community Centre on April 27.

The festival, dedicated to commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of Buddha, brings together Buddhist masters from various traditions, including Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana, to create a day of blessings for people across the globe.

Event representative Victor Kon said the event aims to welcome people from all walks of life.

Police want public help

Police are appealing for public assistance to identify a man who sexually assaulted a woman in St Albans in December.

Police have been told a 66-year-old St Albans woman was playing with her grandson on a nature strip at the intersection of Alfrieda Street and Craigielea Avenue about 2.50pm when an unknown male approached them.

The male asked the woman for cigarettes and she replied multiple times that she did not have any.

The woman walked away with her grandson then the male approached her from behind and sexually assaulted her whilst making crude comments.

The woman shouted at the male before he walked off on Craiglea Avenue then up Collins Street, before doubling back down Collins Street and walking back down Craigielea Avenue towards View Street.

“We decided to create a multicultural event so that it involves everyone and it is not confined to religion to celebrate Buddhism.

“This event is open to everyone and not confined through religion. The ultimate message is non-discrimination and that everyone is equal to each other.”

The festival will feature a showcase of live performancesfromdiverseculturaltraditions, including Indian, Thai, and Filipino cultural dances, as well as the captivating lion dance.

A highlight of the event is the traditional almsgiving ceremony, where Buddhist

Community centre accessible parking decision deferred

Brimbank councillor Maria Kerr said she was not “satisfied” with council’s proposed recommendations to address a lack of accessible parking at the front of the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre (BCCC).

Cr Kerr is a member of the Brimbank Disability Advisory Committee which hosts regular meetings at the BCCC and said there are “never enough” accessible parking spots available.

Currently, there are three parking bays at the entrance of the BCCC with one dedicated to accessible parking.

Last year, Cr Kerr raised a notice of motion

for the re-designation of the car parks to be accessible car parks

“Itisofutmostimportancethatpeoplewith disability have sufficient, accessible parking and that other members of the community respect those designated parking bays,” Cr Kerr said at the time.

The report came back to council at the most recent meeting on April 16, where council officers recommended option C, the third of three options presented for consideration.

Option C recommended that the existing parking bays along Hampshire Road, comprising of one accessible bay and two short term parking bays, remain as they are,

with enforcement to ensure appropriate use.

Councilsaidthecurrentparkingconditions allow for short-term parking for members of the community to access the BCCC and library while also providing a parking space for someone with a disability. Holders of a disabled parking permit are permitted to park for longer periods within the short-term parking bays.

However Cr Kerr took issue with the recommendation as option C did not include any modifications to the two short term parkingbaysandquestionedhowthesewould be able to be used by people with disability.

“ … the other recommendations [Options

A and B] say that those parkings are not fit for purpose to be accessible car parks so why would people that have a disability be able to use option C?” she asked.

A council officer said that while some people with wheelchair needs and larger vehicles would not be able to use the standard car parks, people who hold disability permits for other mobility reasons would be able to use the spaces.

Cr Kerr opted to defer the decision to the next council meeting and further explore options.

Joy at school upgrades

Sunshine Heights Primary School (SHPS) is one of 67 public schools across the state which will share in a pool of funding to build and upgrade infrastructure within the school grounds.

The latest round of the federal government’s schools upgrade fund will award $499,851 to SHPS that will be put towards the refurbishment of the school’s student toilets.

The federal government said it prioritised public schools with the “greatest need”, including schools with high numbers of students from a low-socio economic background, First Nations students, and students with disability.

The latest round of funding was open to all public schools and applications closed in February.

Schools submitted their projects to their relevant state and territory education departments which made recommendations to the federal government.

Sunshine Heights Primary School acting principal Anthony Atkinson said there was a “clear need” for the school to upgrade their student toilets.

“Our principal David Cocks was heavily involved in securing this funding and the schoolcommunityworkedreallyhardtolobby for the government to support the school and help us meet a need that’s been clear for quite a while that our toilets need an upgrade,” Mr Atkinson said.

“Itwasverymuchateameffortdrivenbyour parents who were really active in expressing their desire to have the school considered and it has led to a really great result for the school. We are very excited to refurbish the toilets and make it better for the children.”

Pesutto and Libs woo the west

At this rate, Victorian opposition leader John Pesutto will know his way around Watton Street better than Spring Street. It was down Werribee’s main drag on Thursday, April 11, that the Liberal party leader walked and talked shop with shoppers and shop owners, while a phalanx of advisers and colleagues hovered nearby.

Earlier in the day, the alternative premier visited a number of local sporting clubs and businesses where he addressed functions, posed for photos and provided a sympathetic ear to their concerns while accusing the state Labor government of taking them for granted.

Justfourdayslaterhewasbackagain, butthis time with the whole shadow cabinet in tow for a meeting at the Wyndham Park Community Centre on Monday, April 15.

The meeting featured presentations from localbusiness, communityandcouncilfigures, before a meet and greet session over lunch and a press conference where Mr Pesutto once again bagged the government for their neglect of Wyndham and the west, a message he said he’d heard during his ‘many’ visits to Wyndham in recent months.

Many visits?

A reminder: Wyndham and the broader north-west of Melbourne is an area where the Liberals hold precisely zero lower house seats, either state or federal.

The last Liberal to represent the state seat of Werribee left office when Dick Hamer was premier and in any case, the next state election is still the best part of three years away.

So why then are the Liberals regularly beating a path over the West Gate Bridge, through roadworks and traffic jams, to a place that has for decades been an electoral desert?

“I would argue that the most important reason to be out is to hear from locals about their priorities,” said Mr Pesutto when asked this question by Star Weekly following Monday’s shadow cabinet meeting.

“We understand fully that areas like Werribee are being neglected and we don’t think that’s fair or right,” he said, highlighting public transport, particularly the multi-billion suburban rail loop being built in Melbourne’s east, butwhichisn’tduetoreachWyndhamfor decades, if ever, as a prime example.

“Our concern with projects like that and blowouts on other projects is that it’s starving areas of like Werribee vital funds that they need to cater for growth. There’s enormous growth in areas like Werribee, far outstripping the growth that you’re getting in the inner suburbs. So it’s about doing what’s right and about how do we develop our state fairly.“

‘Fairness’, ‘neglect,’ ’being taken for granted’ – Mr Pesutto uttered these words and phrases almost as often as ‘and’ and ‘the’ during our conversation.

It was no accident.

The sense that voters in Melbourne’s rapidly growingouternorth-westfeeltakenforgranted by a Labor government who accept their votes but ignore their needs, is palpable and the opposition have clearly sniffed an opportunity.

A cynic might argue that they also have no other choice.

Out of office for all but four years of the 21st century and seeing their own heartland in the eastern and bayside suburbs eaten away by Labor, the Greens and the teal independents federally, theLiberalPartyhastomakeinroads into the outer north-west in order to survive, with even Mr Pesutto conceding that it hasn’t just been the ALP who have neglected the area.

“It’s because our party structure in terms of our membership hasn’t traditionally been strong out here,” he explained of why his party had performed so poorly in the area.

It’s a point backed up by Wyndham GP and former independent candidate for the state seats of Werribee and Point Cook, Dr Joe Garra.

“They (the Liberal Party) have their little branches and they just put up a candidate and you go ‘who’s this person?’ no one knows the candidate usually and then the candidate disappears once the election is over,” said Dr Garra of the Liberal’s lacklustre recent campaigns.

“I think it’s pleasing that they’re making a concerted effort to be seen locally and listen to people.”

Dr Garra was one of the people the Liberals listened to on Monday when he addressed shadow cabinet about issues affecting the health system in Wyndham such as the GP payroll tax.

ButwhiletheLiberalsaremakingmoreofan efforttolistentotheconcernsofpeoplesuchas Dr Garra, there’s still scepticism as to whether voters in Wyndham and neighbouring areas will listen to them.

Among them is pollster and former Labor strategist, Kos Samaras.

Mr Samaras said while the frustration among outer suburban voters with Labor was real, that didn’t mean the Liberals would necessarily benefit.

“There’s no real strong evidence to suggest that voter is being converted to the coalition,” hesaid, addingthiswaspartofanationaltrend of outer-suburban voters moving away from the two major parties.

“This is largely driven by what we define as millennialsandGenZ,whocomefromdiverse backgrounds. This is a complete move away from the major party system and hence, the Liberal Party is not going to capitalise on these defections.”

Rather, Mr Samaras predicts the biggest threat to Labor in the north-west, both at a state and federal level, will come in the form of well known and well funded independents.

“I suspect these communities are looking for an alternative. Sometimes that alternative manifests itself as a well known independent like we saw in the Sydney seat of Fowler (ex

Liberal turned independent, Dai Le won the seat from Labor at the 2022 federal election) and sometimes like what we saw in the state seat of Werribee in 2018.”

The independent candidate on that occasion was none other than Dr Garra, who gave long-time incumbent and state treasurer, Tim Pallas, a fright by securing almost 20 per cent of the vote and pushing the Liberals down to third.

But after contesting the neighbouring seat of Point Cook in 2022, something he now concedes was a mistake, Dr Garra saw his vote go backwards, as did other independents such as Melton candidate Dr Ian Birchnall.

“A lot of people seem to go back to minor parties rather than independents,” reflected Dr Garra on the difficulties facing independent candidates at a state level.

What all sides agree on is that there is an anti-Labor vote to be had, it’s just a matter of whether the Liberals can secure it . Afterall, the party has taken other outer suburban seats off the ALP, particularly in Melbourne’s south-east and Sydney’s west, so why not Melbourne’s north west too?

Mr Samaras said there are some key differences, particularly among migrant communities, that work against the Liberal Party in places like Wyndham, Melton and Craigieburn.

“If you think about the Indian-Australian community, for example, those Indian Australians living in Sydney are more likely to have supported the Liberal Party in the past versusthoselivinginMelbourne,”MrSamaras said, somethingheattributestohouseandland packages in these areas, being significantly cheaperthanequivalentplacesinSydney’swest

such as Camden.

“We got migrants who couldn’t afford the $1 million homes and hence were more likely to vote for Labor.”

Another hurdle for the Coalition is that for allthefrustrationandvoterfatiguewithLabor, the party still has deep roots and a formidable campaign infrastructure in Melbourne’s north-west. It won’t be surrendering it to anyone without a fight.

“The only time the Liberals pay attention to Melbourne’s western suburbs is when they’re cutting funding, closing schools and hospitals and going to war with workers,” was the typically combative response from Mr Pallas to the opposition stepping on his turf.

The government provided Star Weekly with blizzard of figures to counter the argument they are neglecting the west, including $1.5 billion for the new Footscray Hospital: $650 million to upgrade the Melton train line; nearly $700 million for upgraded roads and intersections across the west, $32 million for West Gate Bridge maintenance works; 50 new early learning centres; scores of new and upgradedschoolsanddozensof levelcrossings from Melton to Newport being removed.

Expect those and other figures to be repeated ad-nauseam between now and next state election in November 2026, when Labor will seek to win a fourth term in office while maintaining its hegemony on the north-west.

There’s no guarantee that Mr Pesutto will even make it to that election as Liberal leader, but when asked if the party will run a stronger campaign in places like Wyndham, with better candidates, more volunteers and more corflutes, he was unequivocal.

“You bet.”

‘Icon’: Les Twentyman honoured

Victoria has said its final goodbye to Les Twentyman, a “true son of the west” and a champion for youth across the state.

Family, friends, political leaders and the public gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday, April 16, to bid a final farewell to Les who died in late March at age 76.

By his own words, Les described himself as a “well-known troublemaker” and “mad stirrer” from the west.

And as his younger brother Garry took to the podium to deliver his tribute, it was clear that Les had always marched to the beat of his own drum.

“It was very handy being brought up in Braybrook [and] having a brother that was three years older than me. Because he could actually tell me all the things that you could actually get away with, and those that wouldn’t work. And it saved me a hell of a lot ofheartache, andwemanagedtogetthrough,” Garry said.

“Les was one of the first inmates at Braybrook High School back in 1960 … the teachers quite frankly thought they were in control of the school – but I’m quite sure Les was. Les and his cronies basically went to school to fill in time between social events and sporting events.”

Les’ sister Sandra shared stories of the Twentyman household where the five children were raised in Braybrook.

Their parents ran a fruit shop on South Road and Sandra said they did everything they could to put food on the table.

“We found out at a very early age that pride was a useless emotion when you were poor,” she said.

“... [He was] darkly funny, fiercely honest and always playing down the enormous difference he made.”

and the people whose lives were changed and helped by Les could fill that mighty ground several times over,” he said.

Premier Jacinta Allan addressed the service as she remembered Les and the lives changed by his work.

“We all know Les was a man with a big heart and his absence leaves an even bigger hole,” she said.

“... Les was put to work on a paper round as soon as his legs were long enough to reach a pedal on his second hand bike created from scraps from the Sunshine tip – my father’s favourite playground.”

Maribyrnong MP and close friend of Les, Bill Shorten, said Les’ life changed the course of many others.

Hydroelectricity boost

A new 400 kilowatt hydroelectricity plant is powering Melbourne Water’s operations at St Albans Reservoir, which is said to help provide clean, low-cost energy and reduce cost of living pressures for Victorians.

The St Albans plant is Melbourne Water’s 16th hydroelectric infrastructure asset. It joins the recently completed 315kW Upper Yarra, Yarra Valley Conduit hydroelectricity plant. A 990kW hydropower plant at O’Shannassy Reservoir is about to begin construction and will be completed in 2025.

Melbourne Water technical specialist Ian Royston said the hydroelectric power stations harness a natural, sustainable and reliable source of energy, rather than letting it go to waste.

“Flow through the St Albans plant is 55 megalitres per day, that’s equivalent to almost 23 Olympic-sized swimming pools and spins

the turbine at about 1350 revolutions per minute,” he said.

Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is one of the world’s oldest and largest forms of renewable energy.

Melbourne Water said it generates hydroelectricity throughout its water supply network, playing a role in helping to decarbonise the Victorian electricity grid.

Using gravity, water moves from major storage reservoirs at higher ground to smaller, lower reservoirs. As water approaches through the pipelines, this pressure is channelled through hydroelectric turbines.

The turbine blades rotate a shaft, which drives an electrical generator converting the motion into electricity. The electricity is used on site to power the reservoir’s operations and excess is fed back into the power grid, helping to reduce operating and customer costs.

Million dollar VU boost

Victoria University’s (VU) Sunshine campus hasreceiveda$1.5milliongrantforcutting-edge machines to support the establishment of the Western Melbourne Precinct for Advanced Manufacturing Training.

The grant is part of the $21.8 million tranche two of the TAFE Technology Fund. Both tranches deliver $50 million to TAFES across the country to upgrade and expand their facilities, such as laboratories, workshops, new equipment and simulated learning environments.

‘‘ Removing fees have clearly played a key role in encouraging people from all backgrounds back into training ’’ - Daniel Mulino

Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor said this technology is vital to support skills training for advanced manufacturing and engineering jobs and a future made in Australia.

“TAFEs must be equipped to deliver the training to the standards expected by industry andstudents–andtheTAFETechnologyFund does this by ensuring campus infrastructure is world class,” he said.

The technology fund investment builds on opportunities created through the fee-free TAFE initiative in an effort to respond to skills shortages in Australia.

More than 48,500 Victorian students enrolled in fee-free TAFE last year, including over 14,000 in dual sector providers like Victoria University.

Chelsea Valentine, who with her partner

has the care of five children, is completing a certificate II at VU’s Sunshine campus in preparation for a plumbing apprenticeship.

“I love the work. It’s hands on and practical and I really enjoy problem solving,” Ms Valentine said.

“But there’s no way I could have done any retraining if it weren’t for the free courses.”

It was a similar story with Dave Lancaster, a former truck driver and now mature-age student studying IT and cybersecurity.

“I have always been really interested in computers and to have this chance to learn skillsinanareawherethereareplentyofjobsis

fantastic. I am so grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

Fraser MP Dr Daniel Mulino said it was clear that fee-free TAFE courses have been life-changing for so many people.

“Removing fees have clearly played a key role in encouraging people from all backgrounds back into training, and into areas where there is a high demand for workers,” he said.

“Moreover, Victoria University has long had innovative programs to attract and retain young people who have traditionally faced barrierstotertiaryeducationsoVUisaworthy recipient of this grant.”

Keilor quarry fined for leak

The operator of a Keilor quarry has been fined $9616 by the Environment ProtectionAuthority(EPA)afteritfound industrial wastewater flowing down a hillside towards Arundel Creek and the Maribyrnong River.

The property on Annadale Road, Keilor, is also the subject of EPA regulatory notices ordering the occupier, Disposabin Pty Ltd, to introduce planned dust management measures and implement controls to prevent the discharging of wastewater or stormwater containing waste from the premises.

An EPA officer inspected the site on January 26, in response to a report from a member of the public and found liquid discharging down an embankment towardsthecreek, nearAnnandaleRoad.

The water was being pumped out of a dam on the premises and onto the hillside. The EPA officer took wastewater samples which contained elevated levels of copper, iron, lead, nickel and zinc.

EPA northern metropolitan regional manager Chloe Bernett said wastewater is not just water.

“The quarry is used for the extraction of clay, shale, sand and gravel, and the wastewater from the drilling process contains mud and minerals including a variety of metals at higher than normal levels,” Ms Bernett said.

“It is not only industrial waste under the law, but also a hazard to the natural environment and people’s health and shouldnotbeallowedtoflowintoacreek or river.”

With Anzac Day falling this week, Australians in towns, suburbs and cities around the nation will pay tribute to our brave servicemen and women, past and present, and honour their sacrifices.

It is a day when we remember those who gave their lives so we could live freely and peacefully. The Anzac spirit – courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice – that was forged in the fire of Gallipoli in 1915 lives on today and shall never be forgotten.

Lest we forget.

There are many dedicated and passionate people in our community who make an enormous difference to the lives of others. Council wants to recognise and celebrate them with our annual Community Achievement Awards, but we need your help.

This is your chance to nominate someone you believe has made our community an even better place to live. Nominations close at 5pm, Sunday 5 May 2024. Visit melton.vic.gov.au/ CommunityAchievementAwards for details.

As Australia’s fastest growing municipality, investment in our public services and infrastructure is more important than ever before.

By 2051, more than 440,142 people will call the City of Melton home. Because we’re experiencing such rapid growth, our City needs further investment in public transport and road infrastructure, local jobs and health services to create intergenerational improvement.

With the release of the State budget next month, we’re hoping to see further investment to support our growing region.

Reconfigurations of the bus network and new train stations at Mt Atkinson, Thornhill Park and Calder Park Drive would get residents out of their cars onto public transport.

Investment in the Plumpton Aquatic and Leisure Centre and the Cobblebank Community Services Hub would accommodate much needed allied health and community service needs.

While looking to the future of our community, it’s also important we commemorate the past.

Anzac Day pays tribute to our brave armed forces veterans who have given their all in the pursuit of freedom, peace and democracy. Council is proud to support our RSL sub-branches in holding Anzac Day events.

We also pay tribute to Allan Godfrey, one of our last World War II veterans who passed away in March aged 100. A much loved and respected member of our community, and we will miss him dearly. Rest in peace Allan and thank-you for your service.

A week dedicated to careers

Brimbank council is calling on all jobseekers as it prepares to host a range of events to mark National Careers Week in May.

National Careers Week will run from Monday, May 13, to Sunday, May 19, with jobseekers encouraged to turn up and get the tools and confidence they need to find the job they’re after.

The main event for the week is the Brimbank Local Jobs Showcase, where council will work to match local people with local jobs on the spot.

The Brimbank Local Jobs Showcase will

be held on Wednesday, May 15, from 2-6pm at Brimbank Learning Futures (Visy Cares Hub), 80b Harvester Road, Sunshine.

Attendees can discover local employment opportunities, meet employers and business owners and kick-start their journey to success.

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said the events and activities during National Careers Week across Brimbank are designed to help locals find employment.

“Employment is essential for good life outcomes and Brimbank council is

Scouts out and about

Scouts from Caroline Springs, Keilor Downs and Deer Park descended on Government House last week, where they were invited to camp on the vista lawn at the home of the governor-general David Hurley.

More than 1400 scouts across Australia, ranging from five through to 25-years-old, spent the week based on the lush government property with excursions to explore the natural surroundings and hone in their practical skills.

Among the scouts was Scarlett from the 1st Deer Park Scout Group, who shared her highlights of the camp from what she called the “Governor-Generals backyard”.

“[We did] paddling, archery, water watch, [and] some people have done dot painting and badge trading,” Scarlett shared.

From the tents to the bathrooms, Scarlett said everything at the campsite was “cool”.

“The tents are really cool because they can fit up to eight people and the campsite is really

big … I went mountain biking, it was my first time and I rode 10 kilometres,” she said.

“We also saw kangaroos and one of the kangaroos had a joey with them.”

According to data collected by Resilient Youth Australia in partnership with Scouts Australia, the focus on outdoor education delivered through the scouting experience provides significant wellbeing benefits to young people.

The study found scouts indicated a healthier mental state than non-scouting peers of the same age.

Speaking before the scouts arrival, governor general Hurley said he was pleased to welcome the large cohort.

“I am delighted that the grounds of Government House will be the backdrop for so many scouts from across Australia to come together, immerse themselves in team-building activities and forge lifelong friendships,” he said.

committed to help people in our community find and secure meaningful work,” Cr Rasic said.

“This year we have a new event which links local jobs with local people, including businesses like Civik People, a social enterprise focus on creating jobs for refugees and humanitarian migrants, and JBS Australia- one of the largest manufacturers in Brimbank, and Home Instead are looking to recruit people into paid carer giver roles.

“Brimbank has one of Melbourne’s highest jobless rates, which is why council is focused

on building pathways to employment with jobsrighthereinourcity. So,ifyou’relooking for work or looking for workers, please reach out and come along to some of our events during National Careers Week.”

The week will involve a range of free jobseeker events including, ‘Setting Yourself Up For Success’, ‘Resume Help’, ‘Success Lab: Youth Interview Skills Workshop’, ‘Responsible Service of Alcohol Course’, ‘Intersectional Human Library’, and ‘Young Makers Cricut Build and Bond’.

Green wedge plan ‘doesn’t cut it’

The state government has been criticised for its plan to protect Melbourne’s green wedge areas, with an expert saying it fails to respond to the major threats.

On March 18, the state government unveiled its green wedge and agricultural land action plan, which it said outlines a focus on preserving green wedges and agricultural land on Melbourne’s outskirts.

Greenwedgesaredefinedasnon-urbanareas of metropolitan Melbourne that lie outside the urban growth boundary. There are 12 green wedgeareasacross17municipalities,including Hume, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melton, Whittlesea and Wyndham, which form a ring around the city.

Retired environment and planning professor

Michael Buxton said the plan completely fails to protect the green wedges from the threats that face it.

“The [plan] fails to deliver on its acceptance of the need for stronger planning controls to protect the rural land uses of green wedges,” he said.

“This means that the [plan] fails to do what it promised – prevent the further loss of the values of green wedges to incompatible development.”

Mr Buxton said the plan is full of general statements that don’t constitute commitment.

“They don’t clearly state in any measurable way what actions they’re going to take, instead they water down [the] commitments but using vagueterms…suchas‘encourage’,‘strengthen’, ‘better direct’.

“These are undefined, subject to

interpretation and unable to be measured or their effectiveness assessed. After six years of investigation, an action plan which defers action to future undefined measures is hardly adequate.”

Inthefirstactionoftheplan, thegovernment said it will prepare and apply a new planning scheme overlay to protect the Werribee and Bacchus Marsh irrigation districts.

The government said they are the two most significant recycled water precincts in Melbourne’s peri-urban area, which together constitute approximately 3000 hectares of land in Melbourne’s west.

Mr Buxton said while the government does say it is going to bring in a new planning overlay, it doesn’t explain what the overlay is going to do.

“They’re very careful not to state that the

Sunshine joins life saving program

St John Ambulance Victoria (SJAV) is expanding its ’Defib in Your Street Program’ into its third suburb – Sunshine – in a bid to increase cardiac arrest survival rates.

Incidents of sudden cardiac arrest now sits at almost 8000 per year in Victoria alone, an increase of 20 per cent in just five years.

With a 5 per cent survival rate, SJAV is on a mission to raise that rate to 15 per cent, which couldsaveanother780livesperyearinVictoria.

The 3020 postcode includes the suburbs of Sunshine North, Sunshine West and Albion. SJAV reports that there is not one defibrillator available 24-7 in the entire postcode, despite appearing in the top 10 list of suburbs with the most cardiac arrests in a five year period, recording 229 from 2018-23.

And if people needed any further encouragement on the importance of learning CPR, Leanne Conway spoke movingly about the night in 2020 that her husband Andy experiencedaparticularlyseverecardiacarrest.

For 26 minutes, Leanne and her daughter Renee performed CPR on Andy, ensuring he stayed alive until the paramedics arrived and were able to stabilise him.

“I am only alive to tell this story because my family knows CPR,” Andy said.

Leanne said she had performed CPR a few times, once following a road accident and another time when a person began choking when dining in a restaurant. Both people are alive because Leanne knew CPR. Her message couldn’t be clearer.

“PleaselearnCPR.Youneverknowwhenyou might need it, but if you are prepared you will save a life.”

SJAV is calling for Sunshine residents to participate in the program by signing up for free CPR training or hosting a defibrillator. Locals can head to www.defibinyourstreet. org.au to find out more on how to participate.

overlay will be tough,” he said. “It avoids mandatorymeasuresexceptforthepreparation of one overlay, two prohibitions and one other mandatory measure.

“The government’s job is to protect the green wedges. This is a critical time for its future, if something isn’t done they will certainly be lost. It won’t take long.”

A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson said department experts developed the plan in consultation with councils, the agriculture sector, and the Green Wedge Coalition.

“We’ve already enshrined protections into the planning and environment act and set up agriculture Victoria’s planning and advisory service and we’re now working with councils and authorities to deliver several more actions this year,” the spokesperson said.

Have your say on village

Brimbank council is seeking community feedback on two concept design options for Glengala Village.

Council said both of the design options provide improvements to create a safer street environment, an attractive neighbourhoodhubwithlotsofgreenery, and more space for locals to walk, shop and gather.

Option one includes a pedestrian priority crossing point at the centre of the village, whereas option two does not include a central crossing point.

Currently, Glengala Village has 22 on-street car parking spaces. The proposed designs provide 19 on-street car parking spaces for option one, and 22 on-street car parking spaces for option two.

Council will host an in-person chat on Saturday, May 11, from 10am-noon, in front of Australia Post on Glengala Road, Sunshine West, for residents to discuss the options and provide feedback to council.

Consultation is now open for the community to provide feedback on their preferred design option up until Sunday, May 19.

Council said it plans to begin the upgrade works during the 2026-27 financial year, with design and timing subject to service authority approval and council budget.

Winners all-round at Oyiti Cup

Everyone was a winner at the second annual Oyiti Foundation Cup held in Dandenong on April 12-13.

That’s how Oyiti Foundation for Multicultural Youth head Nyibil Amum described the buzz of 200 players vying for trophies at the Hoops 24-7 centre.

The aim was to promote young people’s mentalhealth.Tobringyoungpeopletogether and urge them to help one another.

Mental health professionals, Victoria Police and youth workers were also on hand to connect at the event.

Amum described the second staging of the event as “spectacular” – which had swelled to 25 teams from as far as NSW and masses of volunteers.

Amum said he had to limit the number of teams due to the small venue. It was hoped to stagethetournamentinthebiggerDandenong Stadium next year.

“The message is whoever comes is a winner. Rather than spending that time at home, they were spending time with other young people, keeping fully engaged with organisations.

“We’re looking forward to keeping the conversations going.”

In attendance was the Sunshine-based Longhorns Basketball Club. Club president Manyang Berberi said the players had a great time at the school holiday event.

“Thetournamentwasabeautifulcommunity event focussed on youth engagement,” he said.

“Longhorns has been a great club in the western suburbs and the players had a great time. We even had our under-16s and under-18s teams make it to the grand final as runners up.”

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number from 1 to 9 must appear in: each of the nine vertical columns, each of the nine horizontal rows and each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes. Remember, no number can occur more than once in any row, column or box.

Using the nine letters in the grid, how many words of four letters or more can you list? The centre letter must be included and each letter may only be used once. No colloquial or foreign words. No capitalised nouns, apostrophes or plural nouns ending in “s”.

MG4 XPower Hatch –

is it hot or not?

As we began this review of the MG4 XPower the company announced that it was switching to national driveway pricing for its entire fleet.

In the case of the MG4 range the new driveaway prices replace the previous manufacturer’s RRP and equate to savings of around $3000 to $5000.

The fully-electric MG4 was added to the MG range midway through 2023.

Unlike the ZS and HS EVs which are modified versions of the respective petrol vehicles, MG4 is a dedicated EV and the first to use the innovative Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that will underpin a new generation of MGs.

MSP features rear-wheel drive, 50:50 weight distribution and thin battery technology.

MG4 comes in a choice of five variants: Excite 51 kWh, Excite 64 kWh, Essence 64 kWh, Essence 64 kWh, Essence 77 kWh Long Range and XPower 64 kWh.

The first four models have a single, rear-mounted motor, while XPower – the one we’re reviewing here – adds a front motor for all-wheel drive.

Driveaway prices now range from $39,990 fortheRWDExcite51kWhthroughto$59,990 for the high-performance AWD XPower.

Styling

While the MG ZS and HS models follow the predictable and functional SUV styling, MG4 is easily the most attractive vehicle we’ve seen yet from the Chinese carmaker.

A sleek profile is topped by a two-tone roof and there is an active intake grille shutter – no need for an ugly radiator intrusion up front.

It rides on 18-inch alloys with aerodynamic covers, with LED rear lights, distinctive rear centre light bar and a twin-aero rear spoiler.

There is no specific badging to distinguish the XPower from the rest of the MG4 range, apart from the name being shown on the tinny orange brake calliper covers.

XPower also gets re-tuned suspension for

25 percent extra stiffness, beefier anti-roll bars front and rear, re-calibrated steering and torque vectoring.

Interior

There’slittleinsidetheXPowertodistinguishit from the rest of the MG4 range.

Only the inclusion of a Track Mode feature activated from the touchscreen allows the driver to check lap and stage times, giving a clue to its performance alter ego.

The aforementioned Modular Scalable Platform creates good cabin and storage space, bearing in mind that it’s a compact hatchback and slightly smaller than Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30 and Mazda3.

The two-level boot floor caters for 363 litres withtherearseatsinplaceand1177litreswhen folded.

Infotainment

Infotainment features across the MG4 range include a 10.25-inch multifunction colour touchscreen, configurable 7.0-inch LCD digital instrument cluster, four-speaker audio, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB and FM Radio, multi-function steering wheel controls and three USB ports.

XPower adds satellite navigation with voice control and EV trip planning, 360-degree parking cameras, six-speaker premium audio with sound field calibration, and wireless smartphone charging.

The MG iSmart system integrates car, internet and communication enhanced by voice activation and remote-control features on XPower and Essence models.

Powertrain

XPower is the only MG4 variant to have electricmotorsforboththefrontandrearaxles to provide the benefit of all-wheel drive.

All others have rear-mounted motors powered by either 51 kWh (Excite), 64 kWh (Excite or Essence) or 77 kWh (Essence Long Range) batteries.

The dual-motor, all-wheel drive MG4

XPower uses the mid-range 64 kWh battery to produce 320kW (150 kW from the front motor and 170 kW from the rear).

This, together with 600Nm of torque, makes it the most powerful production MG in Australia to date, capable of 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Range is listed at 385km on the WLTP cycle. Not surprisingly that will drop down under aggressive driving.

There are four regenerative braking levels down to one-pedal mode.

Safety

MG4 received the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating when tested last year.

Standard features include six airbags, enhanced ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist, and electronic stability program, reversing camera, hill start assist with auto hold, automatic door unlocking and a collapsible steering column.

Also, standard is the MG Pilot advanced driver assistance system which adds lane keep assist and departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergencybraking, trafficjamassist, intelligent headlight control, speed assistance system and driver inattention alert.

Unfortunately, MG has followed the growing trend to switch various controls to the touchscreen, including the most commonly-used audio and air conditioning.

While it might suit the stylists it takes far too much of the driver’s attention away from the road ahead.

Interestingly, there’s a move underway in Europe where Euro NCAP are planning to deduct points where certain functions are not easily accessible via physical knobs and/or buttons.

Let’s hope that Australia’s ANCAP assessors follow that lead.

ready to set off in the MG4 is that there’s no starter button or ignition key.

Rather, the car is ready to go within a few seconds of the driver sitting down and once the ‘Ready’ light shows on the driver information screen, it’s simply a case of moving a circular knob from ‘P’ to either ‘D’ or “R’.

One of the most appealing features of all electric vehicles is the instant acceleration that can see them leap ahead of the traffic from standstill.

The MG4 XPower raises the bar even further withitsstunning3.8-second0-100km/hsprint.

The jury’s still out on whether the XPower meets the hot hatch pub test.

While it clearly ticks most of the boxes in terms of its spectacular acceleration and speed, it doesn’t provide the same driver input and feedback as its petrol-powered rivals.

For a start there’s no manual gearbox – well, no gearbox at all – which is such an important ingredient for the driving enthusiast.

Likewise, while silent running is a positive feature for most EV buyers, the XPower misses out on the characteristic hot hatch engine sound track.

Ride and handling, although very good, lacks the feel of established hot hatches nor is it as balanced through corners.

Summing up

Ever since the first of the new Chinese MGs arrived here in 2018, we’ve found ourselves cringing a bit when cornered by devotees of the classic British sportscars that carried that iconic badge for decades.

Notanymore…becausetheMG4ingeneral, and the XPower in particular, can hold their own in any company.

With prices breaking through the key $40k barrier and range over 400km, depending on thevariant, theyopentheEVmarkettoawhole new customer base.

At just under $60k the XPower offers almost supercar performance at a fraction of the price.

But does it qualify as a hot hatch? We’d say no – not enough driving enjoyment.

Warriors made to pay the price

The Western Warriors will go back to basics after the most disappointing performance of their short history in the Victorian Netball League championship.

After falling just short against an undefeated Boroondara Express in the previous round, the Warriors were full of confidence heading into their match against the Bendigo Strikers on Wednesday night.

The Warriors though had no answers for the Strikers who had a comfortable 60-45 win.

Warriors coach Kim Bailey was left shellshocked following the performance.

“It was really disappointing after such a good game the week before and losing by only a goal,” she said. “To come out and put that on the court is a bit perplexing. I don’t know what happened.”

Bailey said the Strikers had been on a bit of a roll and that they had played really well. The two sides are the two new teams in the championship competition this year.

She said they had done their homework and it paid off.

“They took our goalers and midcourters out of the game,” she said. “Milly Brock had a good game and we couldn’t stop her.”

Bailey said after a slow start that they had managed to get the margin back to six goals at half time.

The focus was to level the score heading into the final quarter, but they weren’t able to do that.

She said that in a number of the key areas, the Strikers were on top.

“We had 34 negative turnovers, they only had 24,” she said.

“They had 15 intercepts to our six, they were telling things. They had more opportunities.

“We normally shoot in the 90s, we shot at 78 percent.Wecouldnotgetitinefficientlytoour shooters.”

Kim Borger shot 21 goals for the Warriors, well down on her normal impact.

Bailey said Akira McCormack gave them something different in the circle, but it came too late.

Bailey said they would take a lot out of the game and there were things that they would still need to work on.

“Good teams have sustained good games together,” she said. “We need to do that, we need to be more consistent.

“Hopefully that was just an abnormally. Nothing we did worked.”

Despite the loss, the Warriors, who are in ninth spot, sit four points outside the top four.

ItwasatoughnightfortheWarriorsunder-23 sidethatledallnightagainsttheStrikersbefore losing 54-53.

Bailey said they had costly turnovers at the wrong times. She said the group needs to get into a winning mindset.

The Falcons next match against the Hawks will be their first at Cobblebank Stadium in Melton on Sunday.

Bailey said they were hoping to get a big crowd out to watch them on their home court.

As well as the under-23s and championship side, there will be an exhibition game beforehand.

The action starts at 11.30am.

Reds started strongly under new coach Batur

New Sydenham Park coach Milan Batur can’t complain in the early part of the FV state league 1 north-west season.

Batur replaced Goran Lozanovski as the Reds coach, after the former coach accepted a role to return to National Premier League side Altona Magic.

The Reds sit on top the ladder after three rounds, with two wins and a draw.

Batur said it had been a good start to the season.

“It’s still fairly early days, but for me right now I can’t complain,” he said. “I’ve kept the majority of the team together.

“I’ve bought in a few younger kids and a few experienced heads as well, but we have a very similar line up to last season.”

Batur said there’s always going to be changes at this level but said after finishing second

last season, they knew they didn’t have a bad squad.

“We filled some spots that we thought we needed to with some quality,” he said. “We will see how it goes.”

Batur said it had been different to what he expected stepping up into the senior coaching role having been an assistant coach for the past three seasons.

In 2022, the side finished third one spot outside promotion. In 2023, they finished in second spot but midway through the season, FootballVictoriadecidedonlyoneteamwould be promoted, meaning they missed out again.

Batur said he was enjoying the challenge so far and couldn’t complain.

With the side continuing on what it’s done in the past couple of seasons, Batur said he had kept a lot of the same things in place.

“I wanted to bring a little bit of me into the role,” he said. “I have changed the whole way thatwe’veplayed, butboughtinmyphilosophy on how i think the way we should play

“It comes down to the players and they have done a good job, which makes it a little easier.”

The Reds were back in action on Saturday againstBrimbankStallionsinroundfour, after deadline.

The Stallions were in ninth spot after three rounds.

“It’s a little bit of a rivalry,” Batur said before the match.

“We were a little disappointing to drop points in our last home game. We had a draw and we want to instil that we don’t want to drop points at home.”

Falcons roll over Waves

The City West Falcons took the rolling sub to a new level as they did a demolition job against the Peninsula Waves on Wednesday night in the Victorian Netball League championship.

Facing a winless Waves side, the Falcons had more than a win in their focus as they entered the match.

Coach Marg Lind had hinted in the lead up that she would throw the combinations around and get everyone plenty of court time and she did exactly that.

Midway through the first quarter, the Falcons made five rolling subs at the same time and it was a sign of things to come.

Every player played at least 22 minutes as the Falcons rotated heavily in every quarter.

While it prevented them from pushing towards the 100 goal barrier, the Falcons still came away with an 85-34 win.

Lind said they were happy with what they got out of the game.

“It was a bit of a test because we did roll a lot,” she said. “Our goal tonight was to get everyone on and make sure everyone got exposure in a few different positions.

“I think when you do throw as many subs, it’s really hard to maintain discipline and momentum, but that was the theme of the night to be disciplined.

“We probably achieved, because we scored a pretty tidy sum.”

Lind said despite the number of changes they made, they were happy with the pace that they played at.

She said the goaling combination of Shimona Jok and Jane Cook did a few nice things together.

Cook, the competition’s leading goal scorer last season, spent time in defence late in the game as a tall defender.

Other changes included Sussu Liai and Gena Ogier both spending time in centre.

Lind said they were still trying to find Ogier’s best position.

“I’m not certain where her position is because she came from basketball, but before that she was a bit of defence, bit of goals.”

Defensively, Melissa Oloamanu had a strong game as she continues her return from an ACL injury.

Lind said she thinks Oloamanu still has plenty of growth to go. She said she was also impressed with Lucia Fauonuku did a good job on the circle edge as they tried some different things defensively.

The win takes the Falcons to 5-1.

Lind said while they’re happy, they’re not content.

“Istillthinkourteamhasgotalotofgrowth not satisfied with where we’re at. I think we’ve probably out of all the clubs have got a bit more scope to go.

“I don’t think we’re near where we need to be.”

The Falcons under-23 suffered a one goal

loss to the Waves, 41-40. It was the Falcons second loss for the season.

Lind said it was a terrible game of netball.

“I think there were 34 errors from our end,

Devils ready for challenge

Keilor Park is up for the challenge in the Essendon District Football League women’s division 1 competition.

The Devils have reformed their women’s team after not having one since 2019 and have jumped straight into the second tier.

Devils coach Luke Baker said they were really excited for the season ahead.

“We’ve been building a team from scratch and it has taken a while,” he said. “It looks promising and it’s been really good.

“It’s always tough to start with no players but we got on the recruitment wagon and have gotten a few players.

“We love the group that we have.”

Baker said they had a mixture of players, who have played before, players from other sports and new players completely.

He said the average age of the group is 20 or 21 and is hoping they can be together for a long time.

Barker, who said he was looking forward to watching them play, said they felt that they were good enough to be in division 1.

Alltheothernewteamshavestartedin division 2.

“We had a look at things and the girls that we were trying to bring down,” he said. “We recruited for specific roles and were really happy with the girls we managed to get.

“The group wants to test itself straight away.

“It’s my first time in the EDFL and I did a bit of research and think that we have a pretty strong team.”

Baker said there had been plenty of support across the club for the program and everything was tracking in the right direction.

The Devils started their season with a loss to Airport West, 10.10 (70)-2.2 (14).

Nyanthier Malual, Alexandra Kilty and Laycee Eustace were named their best.

The Devils were back in action on SaturdayinroundtwoagainstGreenvale, after deadline.

Clubs calling for changes to the WFL structure

A Western Football League coach is among those calling for changes to be made to the competition structure, or risk losing clubs and players.

In the off season, the league moved from three divisions to two divisions. The top division increased to nine teams, while division 2 has 14 teams after Glen Orden failed to get a team up.

Concerns about blowouts in the scores were circulating before the season started and they were validated in round one.

Sunshine beat North Sunshine by 252 points, while Albion and Newport also had 100 point wins, while Braybrook won by 92 points.

A coach of a division 2 side, who didn’t want to be named, is calling on the league to make changes now.

“Had they listened to the people, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said. “When you

have the top teams in division 2 that could comfortably beat some division 1 teams, it’s hard.

“Multiple clubs want it to be changed and it needs to be fixed before it is too late.”

The coach said that they believed that it needed to return to three divisions or if it was too hard in terms of fixturing, keep the same fixture but play two different finals series, with a finals series for the bottom seven sides.

The coach said if changes weren’t made it would have a massive impact on the competition. He said other clubs shared the same view and wanted changes.

“People are leaving straight away,” he said. “Some teams struggled to field teams in round one.

“Tarneit was calling out for players and it’s only round one.

“We will see senior teams forfeit this season.”

The coach said he was expecting 400-plus losses during the season and that fans would turn away from turning up if they knew they were expecting big losses.

“The WFL has to act and respond to this before it’s too late,” he said. “They will kill the participation of people in sport.”

Sunshine coach Ben Chapman said after his side’s big win against North Sunshine, that top teams from division 2 should not be playing the low teams from division 3 so early in the season.

Meanwhile a petition has been set up by one fan who has accused the league of deliberately forcing lower category recreational clubs to extinction.

“The heartless decision to take away the third division in 2024 will shut the doors for multiple clubs,” the petition said.

The WFL said it wouldn’t be commenting at this stage.

Solid start for Thunder

An undermanned Keilor Thunder has had a solid start ot the National Basketball League 1 South season.

The Thunder were sitting 2-2 after the first two rounds, with two round three matches scheduled for the weekend, after deadline.

Thunder coach Liam Glsscott said it had been a solid start to the season.

“Obviously it’s been a tough start to our season without a couple of our bigs, however to be 2-2 is pretty good.

“We only had nine guys on Thursday night and the boys ran out of legs, while Kilsyth played some better basketball on both ends of the court.

“We were able to bounce back against Geelong on Sunday which was good. They have a lot of experienced players.”

After not playing any midweek games last season, the Thunder had two in round two. Glascott said they always knew it would be difficult with the number of matches they had.

“Four in 10 days to start the season,” he said. “It was more of an NBL schedule, it was something different.

“Some teams had five games in the first couple of weeks.”

Glascott said they were starting to see some of their players get into the games and the season.

Trevor Lakes had 20 points against Geelong, while Cruz Beasley and Cooper Kirkman both came off the bench and provided a spark.

Jalen Gibbs has been leading the way for the Thunder, averaging 26.25 points per game the second most in the competition.

Glascott said they were hoping to get some reinforcements in the next month which will give them extra depth and height.

“One of our bigs is a college kid and he’ll arrive in mid May,” he said.

“Deng Acuoth who won a championship win the Knox Raiders it the other big. He’s currently in Lebanon and will play over there until the end of this month.

“The plan is to get him for his first game against Ballarat on May 4. We’re still working on another player who we’re waiting for them to put pen to paper.

“Three more pieces to come in to help us have a pretty good crack at it.”

The Thunder was at home on both Saturday and Sunday against the Casey Cavaliers and NW Tasmania, both after deadline.

Glascott said before the matches that both would be challenging.

“Casey have been up and down,“ he said. “They beat Sandringham who are one of the favoutires.”

NorthWesthavebeensimilartheystartyed with a big win in the first round and then

some large losing margins at the weekend.

The Thunder women, which were undefeated after two rounds, were also in

A league report released in September, said the WFL will work closely and provide club development staffing resources to those clubs that may need extra assistance as they move from division 3 into division 2 football.

“It is evident that youth football must be a key area of focus of the league for the future sustainability of clubs of the WRFL,” the report said.

“There are some clubs with no pathways from juniors to youth football at all, some that require strengthening of relationships between juniors and seniors and others that require assistance in recruiting and retaining players.

“There was an overwhelming amount of feedback that the grading for junior grades of football is currently not working as well as it could be.”

Lions add more stars

Reigning Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division premiers Deer Park haven’t wasted time bringing in reinforcements.

Fresh off their first senior division premiership, the Lions have added Coburg pair Aaron Ayre and Aaron Shellie.

Both played plenty of Victorian Premier Cricket for Essendon before joining Coburg, while Ayre also played three games for Victoria.

Lions coach Mick Andriadis is rapt to bring the pair across. They’ve signed for the next three seasons.

“I’ve been working on it for a while,” he said. “I’m glad to finally get it over the line.

“I think they just wanted to play in the VTCA. It’s looking stronger with all these players coming over like [Dean] Russ, [Dan] Sartori and now Matt Doric joining Yarraville Club.

“The better players want to come play with it being better cricket.”

Andriadis said he’s known Ayre since he was coach at Keilor when Ayre was a guest player for the T20 competition.

With Shellie his brother-in-law, he was able to get them to come across together.

“They’re not only good cricketers, but good people and good family guys.”

Andriadis said they were hoping to keep their premiership side together, but it’s still early in the piece.

He said a Deer Park junior in Lachlan Fitzgerald was returning to the club, while he hoped their was a spot for Nick Xavier, another young kid, in the top side.

“We’ll wait and see what it looks like,” he said. “There will be more depth which will be big.

“Things are looking good and hopefully we can defend our title.”

In scary news for opposition sides, Andriadis said they still have another one or two players on the radar.

“It’ll depend on points and budget,” he said. “A few more people might want to come to the club.

“Russ, Sartori and [Allan] Wise have a lot of contacts.”

Lakers ready for the challenge to go one better

The motivation remains high for Caroline Springs in the Western Football League women’s competition.

The Lakers fell agonisingly short in the division 1 grand final last year to Spotswood and having kept the core group of their side togetherwillagainbeupamongthefavourties.

Lakers coach Alex O’Shea said it was nice to have footy back.

“It’s a new competition with only one division which is nice, with different teams. We’re done from two teams to one as with women’sfootynumberswilldropoffattimes,” shesaid.“We’refocusingononewomen’steam and have a strong junior program throughout the club and years to come hopefully we can build up a second team again.

“We have a really strong under-18 team with six girls playing at the Western Jets.”

O’Shea said it had been nice to keep the core

group together so they can continue to keep the continuity of the group. She said they had made some changes off field as well to help build the program and remain strong.

“We’ve restructured the coaching team and bought in a few extra coaches, some line coaches and we’ve changed the outlook for the season and how we move forward,” she said.

“I have high expectations of the girls, but it’s good to remember that we need to have a good time and have fun and remember why we want to play footy.”

O’Shea said the playing group had plenty of motivation after falling just short last year.

She said many players trained together in the off season without the coaches.

On field, she said several girls have different roles this season and she was keen to see what they could do.

The Lakers started the season with a loss

to Werribee Centrals. O’Shea said they were beaten by a better opposition on the day.

“Wedon’twanttolose, butwetakealotfrom that and will build throughout the season. We can continue to correct those things that we need to work on.”

The Lakers got on the winners list on Saturday, beating Wyndhamvale. It was a big win for the Lakers, winning 13.17 (95)-0.2 (2).

Jactina Kondis kicked five goals for the Lakers in a best on ground performance. Kyah Tessari and Rebecca Marshall also had strong games. The Lakers face Yarraville-Seddon this Saturday in round three.

The Lakers men’s division 1 side also got its first win of the season on Saturday, beating Hoppers Crossing, 9.18 (72)-6.12 (48).

Bailey Raak kicked four goals for the Lakers and was named their best. The Lakers host Parkside this Saturday in round three.

Saints stay the course

St Albans was able to overcome some poor kicking in front of goal to seal its second win of the Essendon District Football League division 1 season.

The Saints were at home for the first time this year, facing Roxburgh Park which was coming off a win in the previous round.

The Saints made hard work of it, but did enough to win, 9.19 (73)-8.6 (54).

Saints coach Zammy Muhtari said to be 2-0 was a good start to the season.

“Obviously it’s a good start, but there’s still a lot of improvement to come,” he said.

“There’s still some personnel to bring back, but we’re happy at the moment.”

The Magpies had control early on the scoreboard, with the Saints not helping themselves.

The Saints kicked 1.7 in the first quarter to trail by 12 points.

They still struggled in front of goal in the second quarter, but were able to hit the front heading into the main break.

The scoring dried up in the third quarter, before the Saints kicked five goals to seal the win in the final quarter.

Muhtari said their goal kicking was frustrating and that bad kicking is bad football.

He said the Magpies also made them work hard for it.

“They pushed us all day,” he said. “Their work rate was really strong.

“Ourguyshadtoburrowinunderopposition pressure. We should have shut them out of the game earlier, but credit to Roxy.”

Muhtari said late in the game they started to execute a little bit better and were able to finally start to convert in front of goal which proved to be the difference.

Josh Carter and Mason Dipetta kicked two goals each for the Saints.

Muhtari said it was hard to pinpoint who was their best on the day.

“We want players to play a role,” he said.

“ Matthew Gundry had a solid game, while Bill Sam down back was good.”

The man of the day though was the skipper in Jack Sims, who played his 350th game for the club.

Muhtari said Sims deserved all the recognition that he got.

“From juniors through to seniors,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to see him come through the journey.

“His passion and dedication week in, week out. Not just to his teammates by the club and it’s a testament to him.

“He’sarealstrongdriveroftheclubculture.”

The Saints this week face Craigieburn, which had a bye at the weekend.

Muhtari said he was expecting another big challenge.

‘Craigieburn are always tough and very similar to Roxy with their effort and strong work rate.

“This year it’s a very strong competition and so many close results. It’s closer than last year.”
