I recently had the incredible opportunity to spend a week at STARS as part of Shepherd Center’s Recreational Therapy program and with financial support from the Kelly Brush Foundation. Being 42 years post-injury today this was a dream come true for me as I had always wanted to participate in one of these adaptive programs in the beautiful landscapes of Colorado.

From the moment I arrived, thousands of miles away from my usual surroundings, it felt like "home." The accessibility was beyond perfect. Unlike the usual challenges I face when checking into a hotel with supposedly accessible rooms, everything was meticulously designed to cater to my specific needs. The ranch went above and beyond, ensuring every aspect of accessibility was considered. This level of thoughtfulness and attention to detail truly made a difference in my experience. This trip presented me with the opportunity to conquer new challenges and embrace exhilarating experiences. For the first time since my injury, I ventured to the top of a mountain in a gondola witnessing breathtaking views that filled me with awe and gratitude. Additionally, I indulged in the joy of grooming a horse and then riding him, an activity I hadn't experienced in years. The empowering feeling of reconnecting with this passion and conquering new heights left an indelible mark on my heart.

In summary, my time at STARS was a transformative experience. It fulfilled a lifelong dream, provided a sense of belonging and allowed me to rediscover the thrill of new adventures. This trip will forever hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the resilience and joy that can be found in embracing life's possibilities.
