Underage drinking and alcohol Underage drinking and alcohol misuse are significant public health problems, and they exact an enormous toll on the lives of students on school campuses across the United States. According to a national survey, almost 53% of full-time college students ages 18 to 22 drank alcohol in the past month and about 33% engaged in binge drinking during that same time frame.

As many parents are preparing to send off their young adults to school, it is important to have honest and open conversations about and around alcohol responsibility. Since parents are the leading influence on their kids’ decision to drink or not drink, these conversations must happen early and often.

When conversations around

alcohol go up, underage drinking rates go down.

Underage drinking isn’t harmless fun.

School-aged children are going through a critical period of physical and emotional growth. Kids who drink during this time can suffer real damage—exposing their developing brains, lives, and mental health to serious, even deadly, consequences. Help the kids in your life understand the risks of underage drinking by getting the facts for yourself.

Politiqueras - New Laws Can Result in a Felony Conviction

By Toni Trevino For many decades, female campaign workers, known as “politiqueras,” have determined who wins elections in South Texas. Although there have been some male campaign workers, “politiqueros,” the vast majority of the campaign workers in South Texas are female. These women are very influential in their communities and manage to earn a large amount of money for their families during campaign season. It is not uncommon for a politiquera to earn between $500 and $1000 per week for their work.

Better yet, politiqueras are paid in cash, so no wages are reported to the government and no taxes are collected. The politiquera’s work begins before the period to request a mail-in ballot. They begin visiting the homes of their neighbors and

friends, typically the elderly or disabled.

They offer to help them fill out an “Application for Ballot By Mail” and may even mail the application for them.

A list is maintained of all of the voters they visit and the date when the “Application for Ballot By Mail” is mailed to the Election Administrator. In the past, some politiqueras had affiliates who worked in the elections office who would let them know when the ballots were being mailed to the voters. Once the ballot arrives at the voter’s residence, the politiquera “assists” the voter to fill out the ballot. Of course, the assistance typically results in the voter either marking the ballot for the candidate who hired the politiquera or the politiquera filling in the ballot herself making sure to mark the ballot for her candidate.

Sometimes, the politiquera mails the ballot back to the elections office herself. All of this activity is carefully documented so the candidate knows exactly how many votes he or she has before the ballots even make it back to

the elections office and long before a vote is officially counted. The documentation also helps to know which voters have been contacted and which are still available to vote. If asked what the candidate is paying, the politiquera will typically say that the candidate is just paying for gas or providing their lunch, when in fact, they are paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for their work during a campaign season.

If you are a politiquera or campaign worker, a new law that you may be unaware of may lead to your arrest and felony conviction.

As part of Senate Bill 1, the Texas legislature enacted Section 276.015 of the Texas Election Code which defines “[v]ote harvesting services” as “in-person interaction with one or more voters, in the physical presence of an official ballot or a ballot voted by mail, intended to deliver votes for a specific candidate or measure.” As of December 2, 2021, it is against the law in Texas, either “directly or through a third party,” to knowingly provide or offer “to provide vote

harvesting services in exchange for compensation or other benefit”.

Simply being in possession of a mail-in ballot or official carrier envelope in connection with vote harvesting is illegal. In other words, if a paid politiquera is in the presence of a mail-in ballot with a voter, to encourage or assist the voter to fill out the ballot, she is committing a third degree felony.

A third degree felony is punishable by imprisonment for 2 to 10 years and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Politiqueras, please do not allow candidates or their supporters to convince you to work as you have in the past. Doing so could result in a felony conviction, a lengthy prison sentence, a huge fine, and time away from your family. Keep in mind that the new law also makes it illegal for anyone to recruit you to engage in vote harvesting services in exchange for compensation or other benefit “reasonably regarded as a gain or advantage, including a promise or offer of employment, a political favor, or an official act of discretion,” to you or to a person whose welfare is of interest to you.

As Fire Prevention Week TM approaches, the City of Rio Grande City Fire Department reminds residents that “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.™” The City of Rio Grande City Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFP A®)-to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week TM (FPW), October 9-15, 2022. This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape ™”, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes ( or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds.

Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFP A. The City of Rio Grande City Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme.

“It’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different,” said (Your name, title).

home where everyone should meet.

•Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.

Keep Kids Safe Around Water Constant supervision around water helps prevent child drownings With thousands of families spending their weekend enjoying swimming pools, lakes and beaches, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) urges parents and caregivers to keep constant watch on kids when they’re around water, especially young children.

Currently seventy percent of drowning reports in Texas are children under the age of 5.

Parents and other adults need to be vigilant about watching kids around water, both indoors and outdoors, while also having fun and enjoying being active and together as a family. As it only takes a moment for a tragedy to occur. Already this year there have been 66 reports of child water fatalities.

Most child drownings occur in backyard or apartment swimming pools. Children also drown in ponds, rivers, lakes, coastal waters, creeks, bathtubs, and anywhere there is water.

don’t attract a small child.

•Don’t assume young children will use good judgment and caution around water.

Kingsville students walked the RIO GRANDE CITY Bachelor of Science - Alonso stage Friday, Aug. 5, during Armendariz Summer Commencement at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

Grulla High School Starr County Youth Coalition Held Their First Meeting

The Grulla High School Starr County Youth Coalition held their first meeting on Thursday, August 18, 2022. Their mission is to help reduce substance abuse through a commitment to the design and delivery of comprehensive prevention services. Coalition members play an active role in developing community efforts to prevent drug and alcohol abuse by partnering with the Coalition on initiatives ranging from prevention education and awareness to the development of drug-free alternative activities.

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD hosted their Tailgate Party on Friday, September 2, 2022, to honor the first home game of the season for the Rio Rattlers. Members of the community were treated to free food and music. Our Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Adolfo Pena Jr., as well as some of our School Board of Trustees, enjoyed talking to attendees and helped the central office staff and several campuses give out food and drinks. We would like to thank the entire RGCGISD family for making this event such a success!
