Save Energy at Your Small Business Small businesses in the U.S. spend a collective $60 billion on energy each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program.

Employers and small business owners want to run their operations as efficiently as possible, and businesses have significant potential to save energy. Here are some ideas for increasing the energy efficiency of your workplace with upgrades or behavioral changes.

•Consider an energy audit. You can hire a professional to assess energy use or check out online options. An expert can identify areas of weakness and suggest solutions.

•Get employees involved.

Without their cooperation, you might not see any changes.

Educate them on how to save energy and encourage them to cut down on energy costs. Incentivize changes by rewarding energyefficient behavior with gift cards or time off.

•Time for a tune up. Tune up your heating, ventilating and air conditioning system, just as you would your system at home.

Regular maintenance will help it run more efficiently.

•Change or clean your HVAC filters. Dirty filters cost more to

The website includes a search function that matches TDLRissued occupational licenses with the military training and experiences of servicemembers and veterans who want to transition their military occupations to the civilian world.

The search identifies occupations that the servicemember or veteran would be qualified for, either immediately or through additional education and training.

Also included in the website are important resources to assist servicemembers and veterans who want to pursue an entirely new career after military service.

occupational licenses in other states can apply to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for: •Option 1: a standard license using reciprocity. If a military spouse currently holds an occupational license in another state that has substantially equivalent license requirements or has a reciprocity agreement with Texas, TDLR will issue a standard Texas license that may be renewed on expiration. This option requires successfully passing a criminal history background check.

•Option 2: a three-year license. Provides a spouse with a three-year license to work in Texas, based on their out-ofstate license. Spouses must pass a criminal history background check to apply using this method, but there is no application fee and no examination. The license is not renewable, and after it expires, the military spouse must apply and meet standard Texas licensing requirements.

•Option 3: a three-year letter of authorization.

Provides a spouse with a three-year authorization letter to work in Texas, based on their out-of-state license. There is no application fee, no examination, and no criminal history background check. The authorization letter is not renewable. After three years, the military spouse must apply and meet standard Texas licensing requirements. The authorization is invalidated if the military spouse’s partner leaves military service, is no longer stationed in Texas, or the couple divorces.

More women farming, ranching in Texas

By Gary Joiner, Publisher The 2017 Census of Agriculture revealed some interesting information about Texas farmers and ranchers.

Texas has the most farms of any state in the country. About 250,000.

Who’s running those farms is changing. The 2017 census points to a huge increase in the number of women who are farming and ranching.

The difference in the five years between census counts was over 18,000 women. In comparison, the number of male farmers and ranchers increased by 5,000 during the same period.

The recent ag census did a better job of capturing who is farming and ranching. In previous years, respondents were only allowed to enter information on the principal operator of the farm. The question did not allow entering others who were equally involved in decision-making and management of the farm. The change in approach is good.

And a great percentage of women in agriculture are active advocates and leaders. A recent American Farm Bureau Federation online survey revealed 75% of respondents are leaders at the local level, 50% are leaders at the state level and 26% are leaders at the national level.

Texas agriculture is changing.

It will be interesting to see what the next Census of Agriculture in 2022 reveals.
