Roma ISD Announces Raises, No Change to Insurance for 2018-2019 School Year During the Roma ISD E m p lo y e e Convocations in August, School Board President Raul P. Moreno Jr. announced that all Roma ISD employees will receive a raise for the new fiscal year, which began Sept. 1, 2018; the one-time check will be issued in October. “Our district runs on a small annual deficit, but we have a more than $27 million fund balance and believe our enrollment will stay steady so we are prepared to handle the small impact the raise will have on our future finances,” Moreno said. “Our district has a perfect score of 100 for our financial management as judged by TEA, so clearly our Finance Team is handling our money well and is providing great advice to us. The

school board leadership felt that everyone is working hard, which is proved by the A rating we earned from TEA for our academics from Sept. 2017 to May 2018, and that everyone deserves a raise.” Moreno also assured employees that Roma ISD will cover the increase of the employee-only portion of their BlueCross BlueShield of Texas Health Insurance. “Roma ISD is one of the few districts left that has the benefits and pays most of the cost of our employee insurance and we are committed to that benefit,” said Moreno. “It not only saves our faculty and staff a lot of money, but makes sure they get the medical care they need when they need it. It also helps our employees stay healthy and active because the plan offers a lot of wellness benefits.”

first responders in remembrance of September 11

South Texas College held 9/11 Remembrance Ceremonies at all of its campuses across Hidalgo and Starr Counties. The 9 a.m. Pecan Campus ceremony kicked off five events that took place throughout the day, Sept. 11, 2018. The theme for this year’s ceremony was “Honor and Respect the Blue Line”. STC organized ceremonies that served not only as solemn reminders of the events of 9/11, but also as a way to appreciate the work of law enforcement officers, firefighters, veterans, medical personnel, and first responders who put them themselves in Enjoy some photos from the harm’s way for the safety of Emma Vera Elementary School others. They saved lives while sacrificing their own lives. That’s what I would like everyone to remember on this day.” Addressing students, staff, and faculty at South Texas College’s Pecan Campus as a keynote speaker, Thirteenth Court of Appeals Justice Nora Longoria was among those who gathered to remember the events of Sept. 11, and conveyed her appreciation to those who sacrificed their lives. “It is so important that we remember the courage of those who put themselves in harm’s way for our country,” Longoria said. “When I think of the families who lost children, I can’t imagine how they have been able to persevere and go on every day, but they do. They are examples to us because we have seen them start charities and scholarship funds in memory of all the people they lost. “That is the true American Alejandra Tello Jocelyn Rodriguez Manager CSR spirit,” Longoria said. During the ceremony, a bell was rung in remembrance of key events that occurred on Sept. 11.

She informed the parents on the school’s participation in Title 1 Part A, explained the requirements of Title 1 Part A and explained the rights and opportunities as parents and families to be involved in their child’s learning and achievement. After the meeting, parents enjoyed some delicious pastries catered by the RGCCISD cafeteria staff and they also played Chalupa Bingo.

Did you know? A study authored by education and psychology experts in Australia suggests that kids are spending far more time looking at screens than the two hours recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Published in the journal BMC Public Health in early 2015, the study surveyed more than 2,600 Australian students between the ages of eight and 16 to determine how much screen-based media use, or SBMU, kids were averaging each day. SBMU included television viewing, computer usage and video game playing. The study determined that 45 percent of eight-year-olds and 80 percent of 16-year-olds were exceeding the recommended two hours of screen time per day.

Two Out Of Three Child Safety Seats Misused

With motor vehicle crashes still a leading cause of death among children, the Texas Department of Transportation is joining safety advocates statewide to remind parents of the importance of always buckling up their children. That means not only making sure they’re secured in their vehicle, but also avoiding the most common mistakes when it comes to child safety seats: failing to select the seat that is appropriate for the child’s age and size, and failing to correctly install it. As part of its September “Save Me with a Seat” campaign,

TxDOT is encouraging parents to sign up for a free child safety seat check-up at any of its 25 district offices located throughout Texas. “We want to help parents prevent the kind of tragedy no mother or father should have to endure,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “That’s why we’re making a special push this month to encourage parents and caregivers to have one of our certified technicians ensure they’re not only using the right seat for their child but also that it’s properly installed.” While most parents believe

their children are properly buckled up, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that 2 out of 3 safety seats are not used correctly. According to NHTSA, child safety seats in passenger cars reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers. In Texas, in 2017: ·408 children younger than 8 years old were seriously injured and 73 died in traffic crashes. ·411 children ages 8 to 12 were seriously injured and another 30 were killed.

To protect against injury, TxDOT recommends that all children under age 13 ride in the back seat, properly secured in a seat belt or safety seat. TxDOT’s free safety seat inspections are available weekdays throughout the year and take about 20 to 30 minutes. To schedule a seat check-up with a TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist, visit SaveMeWithaSeat.org and enter your ZIP code to find the
