For the seventh consecutive year, the Roma Middle School Symphonic Winds Band, directed

by Corey L. Graves, has been selected as a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors Project. The project is funded by The Foundation for Music Education.

The Mark of Excellence Project

recognizes and awards outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras from across the United States. A unique competitive environment is created which allows ensembles to compare their performance quality to other outstanding groups from across the country. The

ensemble submits a CD recording of their ensemble from the current school year. The world-renowned adjudicators listen to the entries and provide detailed recorded comments and brief written comments. The top ensembles are recognized as National Winners.

Lieutenant Colonel Melinda (Lopez) Latting recently got promoted to LTC in a September 3rd, 2019 in a ceremony at the Heroes Hall – The Pentagon, Alexandria, Va. LTC Latting is from Rio Grande City, TX, daughter of Juan and Mary BrownLopez. She is an alum from Rio Grande City High School, Class of 1996. In 2000, she graduated from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences. Major Latting received her commission as a Chemical Officer from Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Georgia in 2002. She is a graduate of the Chemical Officer Basic and Advanced Courses. She earned a Masters of Science in Environmental Management from Webster University, St Louis, MO in 2007.

Mindy as she is known by her family and friends has a vast background in assignments all over the United States and the World. Lieutenant Colonel Latting’s operational assignments

include Assistant Operations Officer, 296 Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Stryker Brigade, Fort Lewis, Washington, deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom; Joint Response Team Leader and Executive Officer, 22nd Chemical Battalion, Edgewood, Maryland.

She also served as the Nashville Recruiting Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer for the 3rd Recruiting Brigade, Nashville, Tennessee.

The certification visits are held

randomly (Officials are never notified of inspection date) and the certification is based on inspecting all aspects of the center such as; cleanliness, functionality and review of operational records.

RGCCISD Received “Obesity Prevention Program in the Independent School Districts” Grant

RMS Lunch Bunch Book Club “Spread Kindness”

Members of the Ringgold Middle School Lunch Bunch Book Club have been working on a “Spread Kindness” activity during their meetings. Students are painting and decorating kindness rocks to be placed around Rio Grande City for the enjoyment of our community.

RGCCISD received the “Obesity Prevention Program in the Independent School Districts” grant, which was made available

by The Texas Department of State Health Services and the Community-based Border Health Initiatives of the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission. This grant is being used to promote health awareness, nutrition, and physical fitness among the RGCCISD elementary students.

The goal is to promote healthy long term living lifestyles.

A committee composed of the Elementary Coaching Staff named the grant “Living La Vida Healthy.” The coaching staff performed dietary education by using “My Plate” program as well as the physical fitness strategies.

Mr. Calixto Seca, and Ms.

Edith de la Fuente, DSHS Representatives from Laredo, Texas played a key role in the authorization of this grant.

McAllen ISD to host its first Dyslexia Conference Parents can increase their knowledge about Dyslexia and learn strategies for home and school at the McAllen ISD inaugural Dyslexia Conference on Saturday, Oct. 19, at McAllen High School.

This free event will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. McAllen High is at 2021 La Vista Ave.

Dyslexia, also known as reading disorder, is characterized by trouble with reading despite normal intelligence. Different people are affected to varying degrees.

Their problems may include difficulties in spelling words, reading quickly, writing words, “sounding out” words in the

head, pronouncing words when reading aloud and understanding what they are reading. Often, these difficulties are first noticed at school. The difficulties are involuntary and people with this disorder have a normal desire to learn.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. McAllen ISD will hold a variety of break-out sessions.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. German Corso – a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Dr. Corso will share his knowledge of ADHD and behavioral disorders that can accompany Dyslexia.

Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi began their new club year with a meeting at the home of Chapter Treasurer Alma Gloria T. Gonzalez, seated center. Extension Officer Josie Guerra, far right, seated, distributed the new Chapter Yearbooks, featuring the Beta Sigma Phi 2019-20 theme, Power of the Dream.

Mrs. Guerra presented the first program of the year, on Olive Lee Waller Hinojosa. Programs for the 2019-20 chapter year will feature influential women in the history of Starr County. Several guests were welcomed at the meeting, Melissa H. Garcia, daughter of member Elda Hinojosa, Irma Peña, inactive member of the chapter, and Mary Guzman, sister of Josie Guerra, who served as photographer.

The second meeting of the year was hosted by Vice-president Vangie Anderson at the home of Caterer Jesse Peña. A program on Ethel Fifield Brooks was given by Chapter President Tissa Peterson, seated second from right, who presided during both business sessions. Plans were made for several autumn service projects.

Roque Guerra Jr. Elementary students wore green attire to show support. “Let’s stand together and never let no one stand alone and prevent isolation.”. Social isolation is when someone feels left out, lonely, or invisible. Let’s change this! No one ever needs to feel isolated or alone again.

Wild Things in the City --- part 1 (This is the first of a series of articles with suggestions about how to bring a bit of “experiencing nature” into the city.)

One really great way to enhance your home’s natural environment is by attracting butterflies. October is the peak season for butterflies here in the Valley.

Butterflies are attracted to two different kinds of plants: nectar plants and host plants. Flowers of nectar plants feed adult butterflies and the leaves of host plants feed butterfly caterpillars. Both are necessary.

Nectar producing flowers will attract nearly any species of butterfly. Top rated species include: milkweeds, marigolds, asters, coneflowers and blue mistflowers. There are several blue mistflower species which bloom at different times of the year but all attract butterflies;

one is especially suitable for October. Most flowering plants you grow in your yard will be attractive to butterflies but some are better than others.

Host plants are those plants upon which butterflies lay their eggs and on whose leaves the hatched caterpillars dine. Unlike nectar plants, h o s t plants a r e specific for one or a very few butterfly species. When you plant a host plant you’ll attract a specific species of butterfly.

The wonderful thing about gardening for butterflies is that it both attracts beautiful butterflies and adds beautiful flowers for you to enjoy. It’s a minimally demanding activity asking only for some watering and perhaps some fertilizing. If properly selected the plants don’t attract insect pests and rodents.

Pregnant? Make Sure You’re Vaccinated to Protect Yourself, Baby From Disease The bottom line: Vaccinations before and during pregnancy are important to protect both mother and baby. Three vaccinations are recommended: flu, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis), and MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella).

These vaccinations help prevent the baby from being born with birth defects or worse, reports the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Texas Medicine magazine. They also help expectant moms avoid diseases that can be more serious during pregnancy when the immune system is weakened.

Moms-to-be want to do all they can to make sure their babies arrive healthy, and vaccinations before and during pregnancy help ensure that. Vaccinations to prevent flu, whooping cough, and rubella are needed to protect baby and mom.

“All women should get two vaccines during pregnancy – the flu and Tdap – and one vaccine before getting pregnant – the measles-mumps-rubella [MMR] vaccine,” said TMA member Kimberly Carter, MD, an Austin obstetriciangynecologist. Some pregnant women might need additional vaccinations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Tdap protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis.

When a woman is considering pregnancy, she should check with her doctor to make sure her measles-mumps-rubella vaccination is up to date. Rubella, also called German measles, can cause serious health problems for baby, including heart disease and spina bifida. The disease also can cause blindness, deafness, and autism or other intellectual disabilities.

“Fortunately, the MMR shot protects against rubella, plus measles,” said Dr. Carter.

“Pregnant women with measles

can have severe complications, such as pneumonia, that can send them to the hospital.” This extra protection is particularly important now, when measles outbreaks are occurring nationwide, she added.

Measles also can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight, and preterm delivery, or mom might pass measles on to her newborn, said Dr. Carter.

Flu during pregnancy also can result in preterm labor and birth. That’s why doctors recommend the flu shot for all pregnant women – for its benefits to mom’s and baby’s health.

“Your immune system changes during pregnancy, increasing

your risk of illness, such as flu,” Dr. Carter said. “You’re more likely to be hospitalized if you get the flu during pregnancy, and you even have a higher risk of dying from the flu.”

When a vaccinated new mom breastfeeds, she passes on protection against flu to baby.

And that’s important because babies can’t get a flu shot until they are 6 months old.

Another vaccination, Tdap, protects baby from whooping cough (pertussis). “You get the shot while pregnant, and pass its benefits on to your baby,” said Dr. Carter.

“That’s important because some unprotected babies die from

There’s so much to think about when you’re pregnant, said Dr. Carter. “Getting vaccinated eliminates the risk of preventable disease, and sets baby on a course of good health.”
