Lydia Garza Saenz Honored at Roma High Cross Country Runners Bring South Texas District Meeting Home Top Prizes from Rio Hondo Meet Lydia Garza Saenz, charter member of the GFWC Florence J. Scott Woman’s Club and a federated clubwoman of GFWC Texas since 1966, was a recipient of the Melba Gafford Lifetime Service Award of South Texas District at the organization’s Fall Board Meeting held in Kingsville on October 1. District President Kathy Hajek, Chairman Linda Gerd and Melba Gafford, for whom the honor is named, proudly presented her pin.

Lydia has been serving the South Texas District for over twenty years, has served as a president of her club three times, and is a past president of the Rio Grande Valley Federation of Women’s Clubs and was honored as Outstanding Clubwoman at that level. She is also a District Outstanding Clubwoman/

Volunteer and District Life Member. She has served as a key member on the executive committee and as chairman of Texas Heritage Special Projects

and Outstanding Club Programs for many years. Members of her club were in attendance at the meeting and gifted her with a floral spray.

Congratulations to the Roma High School Mighty Gladiator Cross Country runners who placed at the Rio Hondo CC Invitational! Red Cross: Safely heat your home as colder weather sets in across the Texas Gulf Coast Region It’s time to turn the heat back on in cooler parts of the country and the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region urges families to safely heat their home to avoid home fires.

Heating equipment is the second leading causes of home fires, which typically rise during the colder months. The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign with community partners has saved at least 1,414 lives by educating families about fire safety, helping them create escape plans and installing free smoke alarms in high-risk areas across the country.

Across the Texas Gulf Coast Region, Red Cross volunteers and partners have installed 762 alarms and helped make 254 households safer during 2022 fiscal year.

“Colder temperatures often bring the increased risk of home heating fires, and we want everyone to stay safe by properly warming their home,” said Vanessa Valdez, Regional

On top of this fact, Texas is currently experiencing a high rate of flu activity according to the CDC.
