First Eagle Scouts in More than 20 Years

On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Boy Scout Troop 93 conferred the rank of Eagle Scout upon 3 of its members: Juan Jesus “JJ” Garza, Omar S. Mendoza, and Juan “LJ” Rocha, Jr.

The Eagle Scout rank is the highest rank in the Scouting America AKA Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program. It is a symbol of a Scout’s leadership skills, dedication, and commitment to serving their community. The Eagle Scout rank has been earned by over 2.5 million youth, but only four percent of Scouts have earned it since its inception in 1911. The process is lengthy and highly respected. The Eagle Scout rank carries with it special significance not only in Scouting but also in school, business, and the community.

Scouts must earn at least 21 merit badges before earning the Eagle Scout rank. President Gerald Ford is the only U.S. President who is also an Eagle Scout. An integral part of earning the Eagle rank is the

Eagle Service Project, in which the youth must plan, develop, and lead a service project for either a school, community, or religious organization. Omar Mendoza’s service project at the Fordyce Nature and Hiking Trail consists of a covered bench area, wayfinding sign, and sightseeing informational placards for the public and was created in partnership with the City of Rio Grande City.

LJ Rocha’s service project, the Rosary Garden Project, is a large-scale and complete rosary garden adjacent to the Grotto in Rio Grande City meant for public use, created in partnerships with Immaculate Conception Parish, Cofradia of Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Knights of Columbus, along with numerous individuals who generously donated time and treasure.

Jesus “JJ” Garza’s service project involved designing and building a series of wheelchair accessible raised flower beds to allow special needs individuals to enjoy the numerous benefits of outdoor gardening and was built at Nuevos Horizontes in conjunction with Order of the Alhambra El Cid Caravan #106.

Maria Luisa Garza Uribe, also known as “Bebita” by her family, was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 18, 2024, in Zapata, Texas, surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was 80 years old.

Maria Luisa, born on August 25, 1943, in Rio Grande City, Texas, to Lazaro Garza and Guadalupe Olivarez de Garza, led a life filled with love, faith, and dedication. On June 12, 1971, she embarked on a new chapter of her life, uniting in marriage with the love of her life, Omar David Uribe, at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City, Texas. Their love story was blessed with the arrival of their firstborn, Maria Cristina, in March 1974. Their joy multiplied on their 5th wedding anniversary as they welcomed their second daughter, Maria Teresa, into their loving home.

Maria Luisa’s commitment to education was unwavering. She dedicated three years to Pan American University before earning her degree in Education from Texas A&I in Laredo. Her passion for teaching shone through her 30-year career as

an elementary school teacher for Zapata County ISD and Rio Grande City CISD. Her teaching style, rooted in love and a genuine thirst for knowledge, left an indelible mark on her students; many remember her as an exceptional teacher and beacon of love, safety, and stability.

Maria Luisa’s artistic spirit was a source of joy in her life. She took immense pride in instilling a love of dance, particularly Flamenco and Mexican Folklorico, in her daughters. Despite the distance, she happily commuted from San Ygnacio to Laredo 2-3 times per week to take her daughters to dance classes as they were growing up, a testament to her dedication to instilling a love for the arts in her daughters. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched her daughters and granddaughters dance, a reflection of her cultural passion for song and dance, ensuring the beautiful legacy she left for her beloved daughters’ families. Her love for music was evident in her harmonious duets with her husband, who played the guitar as she sang along every chance they got, especially at family gatherings.

Maria Luisa will always be loved and remembered for her kind and gentle heart and unwavering faith in God. It is with this unwavering faith that she was able to overcome breast cancer at 48 years old. Her love for life and unique ability to make everyone feel special captured her essence. Her strong family values guided her throughout her life and inspired the many people she met along the way.

Maria Luisa is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Humberto Garza (+Selenia), Lazaro Garza, and Heron Garza (+Adeline), and her sisters Estela Ward (+Bill) and Maura Garza.

Brothers-in-law, Joel Uribe (Dene Lulu), Luis Angel Uribe, and Rene Uribe (Olga Maria).

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of almost 53 years, Omar David; her daughter, Maria Cristina Uribe-Short and her husband Travis Short; her daughter, Maria Teresa Uribe Rubio and her husband Ernesto Rubio; and four grandchildren: Melissa Maria Short, Cristian James Short, Alexia Maria Short, and David Gilberto Rubio. She is also survived by her sisters Maria Graciela Lopez (+Encarnacion) and Isaura “Chawa” de la Cruz (Israel), brothers Arturo Garza (+Frances), Hector Garza (+Bertha), and Javier Garza (Lilia), sisters-in-law, Elvira Garza, Maria Del Refugio Garza, Maria del Carmen Uribe, Alma U. Perez (+Jose Javier Perez), and brother-in-law, Jorge Uribe (Irma), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

The Uribe family is forever grateful to Erika Hernandez, Guillermina Hernandez, and Felipa Angeles for their devotion and for providing her with the utmost care.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rose Garden Funeral Home in Zapata, Texas. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 26, 2024, from 6:00- 9:00 PM, with the rosary taking place at 7:00 PM. The funeral mass will occur on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Zapata, Texas. Father Amador Garza will officiate the funeral mass. The interment will occur at the Uribe Cemetary in San Ygnacio, Texas.

Pallbearers are David Garza, Jorge Gonzalez, Jaime Eduardo Hinojosa, Jose Alberto Hinojosa, Edgardo Perez, Ryan Rubio, Cristian James Short, and Alfonso Uribe.

Deseo estar contigo y todos mis seres queridos en la gracia perpetua. Gracias por tu misericordia para conmigo y los míos.

Asthma affects a person’s ability to breathe

Did you know?

Asthma affects a person’s ability to breathe. The National Institutes of Health says asthma is a chronic condition that inflames and narrows the airways in the lungs.

Asthma can develop when a person has a severe respiratory infection as a child, or if one has an allergic condition.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says around 8 percent of Americans have asthma, a figure that equates to roughly 24.9 million adults and children.

Across Canada, asthma affects the lives of more than 3.8 million Canadians, and is the third most common chronic disease, says Asthma Canada.

Avoiding asthma triggers can help to reduce the frequency of attacks. Inhaled medication can control asthma and allow people with asthma to lead normal, active lives, says the World Health Organization.

IRS to host a special Community Assistance Visit in Roma - May 21-23

As part of an expanding effort to reach underserved communities, the Internal Revenue Service announced a special event in Roma, Texas, to help local taxpayers.

During this Community Assistance Visit, the IRS will set up a temporary Taxpayer Assistance Center to give taxpayers from the Roma commuity an opportunity to meet face-to-face with IRS assistors.

This is part of a larger effort underway to transform the IRS and improve service to taxpayers as part of the new Strategic Operating Plan and funding made available through the Inflation Reduction Act.

For the Roma event, the IRS is partnering with the local Roma Community Center to host the event at 502 6th St. from Tuesday, May 21 through Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Roma was selected, in part, based on its distance to the closest permanent IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. The nearest

center is 84 miles away in Harlingen, Texas. To make an appointment during the three-day event, persons may call 615-250-5324. However, taxpayers can also walk in to receive assistance. To get help, taxpayers must bring current state or government issued photo identification and any relevant letters or notices they received from the IRS, plus any requested documents.

The IRS also welcomes tax professionals, lawyers and preparers and their clients to work account-related issues.

During the Community Assistance Visit, taxpayers can meet one-on-one with IRS assistors to receive these services:

• Account inquiries (help with letters, notices and levies on wages or bank account)

• Adjustments (changes to tax account information or payments)

• Basic tax law assistance (answers related to individual

Federal Tax Returns)

• Payment arrangements. Because this is a temporary location, IRS assistors cannot accept payments of any kind.

844-545-5640 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., to make an appointment to visit a nearby TAC. Contact Your Local Office has information for IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers.

Taxpayers are encouraged to make payments online.

• Authentication of taxpayer identities as part of the Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP),

• Transcripts and tax forms (order only), and

• Information on IRS.gov resources and tools

Professional foreign language interpretation will be available in many languages through an over-the-phone translation service. For deaf or hard of hearing individuals who need sign language interpreter services, IRS staff will schedule appointments for a later date. Alternatively, these individuals can call TTY/TDD 800-8294059 to make an appointment.

Taxpayers who would like to speak with an IRS assistor face-to-face but cannot attend the Roma event, should call
