Beloved on earth, regretted still, remembered in the grace. It was hard to part with one so dear. We little thought the time was near. Farewell, dear one, your life is past. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Celebrates National Sleep Awareness Week, March 13-19, 2022 Texas A&M Agrilife Extension recognizes National Sleep Awareness Week, encouraging quality sleep as a means of improving general health and well-being. Increasing focus is being paid to sleep, as a lack of it has been shown to contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of diseases, like heart disease and stroke. “With regard to our personal wellness, we often hear about

the need for a good diet and an active lifestyle. “Adequate sleep is a third component of a healthy lifestyle that is often overlooked or underemphasized; getting the recommended eight hours is important. Our attempts to reduce weight, maintain peak performance at work, and communicate with others are all dependent on getting enough sleep.

Here are three recommended practices to help obtain the rest your body requires to function healthily. Stick to a schedule: Our brain determines our times for day and night depending on our sleep routine and sleep cycles. When we disrupt those time frames by significantly altering our sleeping patterns for a few days, we might spend the remainder of the week off our schedule. Limit caffeine intake: Those who consume four or more caffeinated drinks per day are more prone to sleeplessness, so be mindful of coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks, and their serving sizes. Exercise: Regular exercise throughout the week may help boost the production of the hormone melatonin, termed the “sleep hormone.” Simply ensure that your activity does not take place too close to bedtime, or it may have the opposite effect. Health care providers and health care professionals assist by assessing patients’ sleep habits, and discussing the importance of sleep. “It is important to assist in raising awareness by discussing sleep habits and by displaying patient education materials on sleep, sleep hygiene, and specific sleep disorders in waiting and exam rooms.

Que la armonía y justicia se lleve a cabo por medio de sus acciones. Pedimos por la gente de todas las naciones. Te pedimos que protejas a aquellos expuestos a los horrores de la guerra. More than a Border

Rio Grande vs Rio Bravo --- How the River Got Both its Names

by Faith Chua The Rio Grande River has been a nexus of a rich and diverse history of culture, politics, and trade. From its original human uses as a provider of water and fertile land suited for agriculture, its roles have diversified as the communities alongside it developed & evolved. The river, which starts in Colorado and flows all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico in Brownsville, Texas, is nowadays best known as one of the key delineators of the U.S.-Mexico border. Yet, in daily life & commerce, its bridges are what unites North America. To fully appreciate the river’s current role and how it evolved, it pays to take a look at its past, at the origin of the river’s name. While many in the United States & beyond know the river as the Rio Grande River, others call it by its original name: Rio Bravo. How did these two different names come about? The answer to that question lies a few hundred years ago. Back in 1582, a Spanish explorer, Juan de Oñate, established the first European settlement along the upper Rio Grande in what is now New Mexico. He initially called

the river “Rio Bravo del Norte,” or “Brave River of the North” in English. He chose the name Rio Bravo because, at the time, the river was fraught with strong currents and deep waters and flowed rapidly. At another milestone in history, the U.S.-Mexican War (and subsequently the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo) established a significant portion of the river as the official border between the U.S and Mexico. Many people, especially in Mexico, still refer to the river as Rio Bravo, whereas those on the U.S. side refer to the river as the Rio Grande, which translates to “Big River,” primarily due to the same reasons Juan de Oñate chose the name Rio Bravo. While over the past century the river’s magnificence has ebbed significantly due to the construction of dams to support the expansion of agriculture as well as flood control, making it a much tamer version of its former self, the river’s significance has grown. The river is so much more than a border, it is the coronary artery of the communities along is bank, and even communities far beyond them. It is the source of water, a recreation destination, the intersection of cultures, and the pathway of trade for tens of millions of people. With a history & significance that runs as long and as deep as the river itself, the Rio Grande River not only impacts its riverbanks but the world at large. The History of the Rio Grande

River and Its Significance to Rio South Texas The Rio Grande River is one of the longest rivers in the United States. Around 2,000 miles long, the River starts in Colorado and, via New Mexico and Texas, makes its way down to the Gulf of Mexico. While many know the Rio Grande River to serve as the border between Mexico and the United States since the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, the River’s history is even more illustrious. Several indigenous groups used the River long before the first European settlers, and in the 16th century, the name Río Bravo, the Spanish name for the Rio Grande, started appearing on Spanish maps. This was followed by mining and agriculture settlements well up into the 18th century. These settlements then paved the way for the cities that make up the Rio South Texas region. The Lower Rio Grande Valley, in particular, experienced a massive economic makeover in the 19th century. The ebbs & flows provided by the River evolved the economy from livestock herding to irrigation farming, which then dominated the area for 150 years and generated significant surplus yields. Thanks to the bi-national nature of the region and the Rio Grande River’s suitability for commercial use, this set the stage for Rio South Texas’ economic and trading significance in both the domestic and global markets. While agriculture still plays an important role, the Rio South Texas region experienced another evolution in the 20th century. North American

manufacturing companies, followed by international counterparts, made substantial investments along the River’s banks leveraging the Maquiladora Program, Foreign Trade Zones, and NAFTA. Today, Rio South Texas’ manufacturing environment allows companies to leverage USMCA, IMMEX, CTPAT, and the FTZs dotted throughout the region to transition their products seamlessly across the River between phases in the manufacturing process. This provides these companies a competitive advantage by leveraging the best of North American manufacturing quality at globally competitive prices. From the 1530s all the way to 2022, the Rio Grande River has been a catalyst for trade and commerce, making it one of the primary foundations of the rich and diverse multi-national business culture found in Rio South Texas. From being a nexus of two nations to its location at the heart of the North American supply chain, the River is an integral part of Rio South Texas’ unique blend of local history, regional collaboration, and global opportunity.
