Starr County has and will always be my home. My parents always taught me the value of an education and service. My wife and I are proud parents to four beautiful daughters, Cassandra, Elliana, Katherine, and Sophia.

I currently serve as Chief Anesthesiologist and provide my expertise in the Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, GI Lab, ER, Inpatient, and Covid Unit.

I am running for Hospital Board because I believe my commitment to providing excellent patient care extends to making decisions for the future of Starr County Memorial Hospital.

As a region we remain underserved in our specialty care. I firmly want to be a part of making decisions and bring to our community the services we so much need and deserve. I want to assure you that along with the SCMH Administration and Medical Care Professionals, we will continue to work together to

improve the care of Starr County.

Congressman Cuellar secures FY2022 funds for community projects in Rio Grande Valley Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $2,392,763 in federal funding for the Starr County Courthouse Renovation Project. The funds, included in the FY2022 omnibus appropriations legislation, will support the renovation and restoration of a critical community project in the Rio Grande Valley.

More specifically, the funds

will support the renovation and restoration of the historical Starr County Courthouse by undertaking needed repairs to include roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, hazardous material abatement, and ADA accessibility. These repairs will address safety issues and enable the courthouse to continue providing essential services to the County.

Roma High Students Selected CW4 Adrian Peña Retires from the for State VASE Art Competition United States Army Serving 25 years Congratulations to the 10 Roma High Schools students selected to show work at the VASE State Art Competition in San Marcos in late April! This year Roma High School submitted a total of 80 artworks to the competition, of which 60 earned a medal for a perfect score.

Of those that submitted pieces, 10 students not only earned the perfect score, but qualified to show at state: Diana Barrientos, Solimar Benavides, Casey Cabriales, Ximena Carrillo, Santiago De La Rosa, Yarelli Paola Garcia, Jasmin Ortiz, Michelle Ramirez, Coral Suarez, and Isabella Rios.

“The Art Department wants to thank all art teachers, parents and administrators that helped in the success of our students,” said Yesenia Toscano, art teacher.

“This year was very challenging, but our students’ desire to succeed was stronger than ever. We are so proud of all our students and wish those showing at the state the best of luck!”

Each year more than 28,000

entries participate in VASE and out of that, around 1,700 works advance to the state event. Out of the state winners, only 150 receive the gold seal medallion, which is the highest ranking award

Adrian possesses a comprehensive background in strategic planning, executive leadership, risk management, and process improvement.

Adrian has been recognized for strategic project development and management for support of domestic and global mission requirements in more than 20 countries spanning 6 continents.

Adrian Peña’s Army duty assignments include: Iraq, Korea, Japan, Germany, Hawaii, Colorado, Arizona, Maryland, Texas and Virginia. Currently Adrian serves as the Senior Network Program Manager for the Army Futures Command

in Fort Eustis, Virginia, where he assists in developing the Army’s concepts, determining its requirements, and integrating the future force through experimentation and exercises.

Roma ISD Earns Recognition for Financial Transparency Efforts from Texas Comptroller Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Roma ISD is the latest local government entity to achieve specific transparency goals through the Comptroller’s Transparency Stars Program.

Roma ISD earned a star in the area of Traditional Finances, which recognizes entities for their outstanding efforts in making their spending and revenue information available. Transparency Stars recognizes local government entities that provide easy online access to important financial data.

“By providing meaningful financial data in addition to visual tools and analysis of its revenues and expenditures, Roma ISD has shown a true commitment to Texas taxpayers.

This effort achieves the goals set by my office’s Transparency Stars Program,” Hegar said. “I am pleased to award Roma ISD a star for its accomplishments.”

The Comptroller’s office launched the Transparency Stars Program in March 2016 to recognize cities, counties, and school districts making important strides to greater government transparency. Local government entities can apply for stars in the areas of traditional finances,

contracts and procurement, economic development, public pensions, and debt obligations.

The problem, she said, is these devices promote loneliness and isolation, while hindering meaningful social interactions.

To help people unplug and connect, TMA launched a new initiative, Turn It Off Today, to encourage families to pledge to take a break from electronic devices. The program aims to reduce the amount of time people – especially children and adolescents – spend looking at their screens.

“We must remember that face-to-face interactions (offline interactions) and strong social ties are associated with greater life satisfaction and overall well-being than online interactions,” said Dr. Attaya, whose TMA council launched the initiative statewide.

Previously, Dr. Attaya and her fellow physicians and alliance members at the Lubbock County Medical Society and the Lubbock County Medical Society Alliance created Turn It Off Today in 2019 for area families to adopt; TMA’s

program replicates that.

The program’s goal is to encourage families to swap time spent watching movies, playing video games, or scrolling through social media with “green time” (time outdoors). Dr. Attaya recommends families instead try walking, hiking, biking, and other sports, adding “studies have shown that being outside promotes physical activity, attention restoration, stress reduction, improved memory and sleep, and even healthier cortisol levels.”

Other activities to consider include playing board games, doing arts and crafts, creating an indoor garden, cooking/baking together, playing music, reading, or learning a new hobby.

Turn It Off Today one example is switching off phones, computers, tablets, or other devices a few hours every day. Another example calls for simply disengaging phone alerts, which draw people’s attention to the device. Setting time limits on apps and removing electronic devices from the bedroom will also help reduce

screen time.

Children and adolescents spend at least four hours daily on leisurebased screen time (and up to nine hours total screen time per day).

Too much screen time can lead to depression and anxiety, developmental delays, sleep deprivation, thoughts of suicide, lack of focus, and obesity. Staring at screens more than an hour each day also is tied to less curiosity, lower self-control, less emotional stability, and less ability to complete tasks. People can even experience physical changes in the brain such as “grey matter volume loss.”

The program recognizes that abandoning technology entirely is not practical. It aims to educate families on the detrimental side effects of too much screen time while developing a plan to help limit use.

“Taking a break from technology, participating in nonscreen activities, and socially engaging face to face will improve our overall emotional and physical well-being,” said Dr. Attaya.

Local Blood Centers Ensure Supply Is Meeting Need

Texas physicians are calling for the public to donate blood to shore up supply and ensure blood and blood product needs here are met - while some areas of the country have experienced shortages.

“During these challenging times, no patient - be they a transplant or surgical patient, an accident victim, or an individual with sickle cell disease - can wait until their blood transfusion is convenient,” said William S. Crews Jr., MD, chair of the Texas Medical Association Subcommittee on Transfusion and Transplantation.

“We urge our fellow Texans to roll up their sleeves and donate now, and plan to do so regularly.”

Dallas-Fort Worth area said while blood donations are needed right now and always, the current situation is not as critical as some areas of the country. That’s because the regional blood centers in our state help Texans sufficiently meet fellow Texans’ needs.

Blood donations nationwide decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting some areas of the U.S. to curtail some medical procedures like elective surgeries.

“Although we are experiencing some blood supply shortages, we’re definitely not at the crisis level of telling hospitals, ‘I’m sorry, I know you were expecting 50 units of blood. Tomorrow, we’re only going to maybe give you 30 units,’” he said, describing

That’s because in the Lone Star State, the focus is on collecting local blood and keeping it local as much as possible.

“In Texas, we have a strong network of those community blood centers,” he said. So as some national organizations and others in parts of the country sounded an urgent alarm earlier this year for donations, Texas was better off.

That status only remains positive if people donate, Dr. Crews said, he and his fellow TMA committee members urge people to donate.
