Successful vaccine event was brought to citizens of Roma from Popular Pharmacy of Rio Grande City and 400+ persons were able to get vaccinated. We want to give special thanks to Popular Pharmacy for providing this service in Roma together with personnel from DSHS and nurses from Dr. Mussett’s clinic. Also, special appreciation goes to St. Louis Angels EMS, Roma Police Department, Roma Fire Department, City of Roma Public Works Department and staff for always playing an important roll at all City events.

Texas Delta Theta Meets, Discusses Projects Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed getting together for an in-person meeting after many months of meeting via Zoom.

Pictured are the sorority sisters who were able to gather and discuss past and future projects of the organization and to enjoy a delicious meal served by Caterer Jesse Pena.

The group took part in the annual Starr County Council of BSP fundraiser which benefited the Starr County Youth Fair, STARR of Hope, and the Rio Grande City Public Library. Plans were made to gather items needed for STARR of Hope, such as clothes, diapers, and cleaning materials. Members

The Starr County Groundwater Conservation District (District) will hold a public hearing on proposed amendments to the District’s management plan on April 16, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the Starr County Courthouse Annex Conference Room located at 100 N. FM 3167, Rio Grande City, Texas 78582. All interested parties are invited to attend and are encouraged to provide input, and may do so orally or in written form.

The proposed amendments to the management plan incorporate the updated Desired Future Conditions and Modeled Available Groundwater information developed from the work of the Texas Water Development Board, groundwater conservation districts and other stakeholders within Groundwater Management Area 16, and amend certain management objectives and performance standards. Following this hearing, the District will, in coordination with surface water management entities on a regional basis, complete the management plan to address the management goals statutorily required in Section 36.1071 of the Texas Water Code.

A copy of the proposed amendments to Management Plan will be available 20 days before the hearing at the District’s office at 100 N. FM 3167, Suite 207, Rio Grande City, Texas 78582, and on the District’s web site at www.scgcd.org.

The District is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Dr. Orfanos received his medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico and completed an externship with the Cardiothoracic Association in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dr. Orfanos also completed general surgery residency training at Michigan State University College of Medicine, where he was named chief resident. Dr. Orfanos conducted a postdoctoral fellowship in vascular surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Obituary

Humberto Diaz

01/08/1940 † 03/16/2021 Humberto Diaz, age 81, passed away on March 16, 2021 at McAllen Medical Center. He was born on January 8, 1940

in Tamaulipas, Mexico; son of Lauro and Silvestre Diaz.

He survived by his wife Melida Diaz, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

He was caring, giving and had a great sense of humor. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time at his ranch with his family.

He loved wearing his cowboy hat and boots, no matter the occasion.

He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed the simple things in life.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

Schools Can Win Up to $2,500 During WoodmenLife’s America Is…Video Contest WoodmenLife is sponsoring patriotism in elementary school and school representatives across This year’s theme is “America, its fifth “America Is…” Video students and show pride in their the nation have the opportunity to the Beautiful,” and classrooms Contest, which aims to foster school and community. Students win up to $2,500 for their school. in grades K through eighth can submit original, up-to-60-second videos illustrating the contest theme. Students featured in video entries must be wearing masks or other appropriate facial coverings, per CDC COVID-19 guidelines, to be eligible.

After such a unique year in 2020, WoodmenLife wants to provide a way for students to showcase their creativity and help give back to their schools at the same time. All elementary school classroom teachers, band directors, coaches, principals, and

school-affiliated organizations are eligible to participate.

Videos can be submitted between March 15 and April 5 through the WoodmenLife corporate Facebook page. Voting for the winners will then take place April 7 through 12 on the same page, and the top three entries will be announced on April 15.
