On Sunday, June 11, Members of the Sorority Beta Sigma Phi, Texas Beta Eta Tau gathered at Jesse’s Enchanting Place to enjoy an afternoon Ladies Tea Party. The event was held to honor all past chapter Sweethearts and Debutantes over the years. Beta Sigma Phi was founded in Abilene, Kansas in 1931 and has been in Starr County since 1959. The chapter Texas Beta Eta Tau was established in 1996. “Beta”, “Sigma”, and “Phi” are the first letters of the Greek words for life, learning, and friendship.

Petra G. Gonzalez May 13, 1927 † June 22, 2023

Mrs. Petra G. Gonzalez , age 96, of Roma/Los Saenz, Texas, was called to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon, June 22, 2023.

She was born May 13, 1927, in Dr Arroyo, Nuevo León. The daughter of the late Juan and Celsa Gaytan. As a young girl Petra along with her family moved to the United States and resided in McAllen,Texas. She married the late Servando Gonzalez and moved to Los Saenz, Texas and lived there until her death.

Petra was a life long member of Sagrado Corazon de Jesus at Holy Family Church in Los Saenz, Texas, where she was an active member. Petra enjoyed teaching CCD classes and was an active member in her church where she served as a Eucharist Minister and Lecturer.

She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Petra is preceded in death by her husband, Servando Gonzalez Sr. and

her son, Fernando A. Gonzalez.

Petra is survived by her daughter Thelma Canales (Octavio) and son Servando Gonzalez Jr. Grandchildren; Analea Cavazos (Lauro), Rachel Canales (Jorge), Dana Canales, Marie Delilies Canales, Ricco A. González (Brenda), Andre A. González, Servando González Jr, & Marla Ann Ramos (Luis) and 13 great grandchildren.

Her siblings: Antonia Romero, Juan Gaytan Jr., Marina Melendez, Mercedes Zuniga, Paz Vasquez, Arturo Gaytan(†), Raul Gaytan(†), Guadalupe Gaytan(†), Hortencia Alcázar(†), Imelda Jiménez(†).

She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral service was held at Sanchez Funeral Home in Roma-Los Sáenz, Texas. Visitation was from 1pm to 8pm with Rosary at 6:00 pm. Funeral Mass officiated by Rev. Pablo Wilham, at 10:00am on Monday June 26, 2023, Holy Family Catholic Church was followed by a graveside service at The Los Sáenz Cemetery, Roma-Los Sáenz, Texas.

God’s Garden God looked around his garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, ‘Peace be thine.’ It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home.

We would like to thank all our friends, relatives, and neighbors for your support during our time of sorrow.

Your signs of love showed through your beautiful flowers, food, cards, and most important of all, your prayers. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s presence at the funeral home, rosary, and funeral services.

June is PTSD Awareness Month Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.

Anyone can develop PTSD at any age. According to the National Center for PTSD, about 7 out of every 100 people will experience PTSD in their lifetime.

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms may start within one month of a traumatic event, but sometimes symptoms may not appear until years after the event.

Symptoms can cause significant problems in social or work situations, in relationships, and can also interfere with the ability to go about normal daily tasks.

Symptoms are generally grouped into four types: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative

changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions.

This June, in observance of PTSD Awareness Month, we encourage our community to learn and talk about PTSD. Researching about PTSD’s causes, symptoms, and treatments will better equip you to help people in the future or even yourself.

PTSD can impact anyone who experiences, witnesses or has second-hand exposure to a traumatic event. Examples of traumatic events: Combat exposure, childhood physical abuse, sexual violence, physical assault, being threatened with a weapon, an accident.

Symptoms of PTSD can take months or years to appear.

Relatively few people who experience trauma will develop PTSD. PTSD can present very differently, depending on the person and type of trauma experienced.

The majority of PTSD cases will not resolve on their own.

UTRGV-Starr County Scientist Dioramas at Rio Grande City Library

The creation of the dioramas stems from the idea that many scientists are often unknown mainly because they may be Hispanic, African American, Asian or Women. These minority scientists are the focus of the dioramas for a UTRGV at Starr County course entitled, Teaching Science to Elementary Students.

Each university student was given a specific scientist to research enough information to create a diorama that would encourage young elementary students to think about science as a field of study.

Dr. Richard Irizarry provided a list of 28 scientists to the 28 students in the class, distributed on a random basis. The students need to understand the challenges and the contributions of these minority scientists to create an attractive diorama from a basic shoebox to display the talents and

the relative importance of the scientist.

Jocelynn Garza, the Cohort IX President, and a member of the class researched Dr. Helen Rodriguez - Trías who was the scientist assigned to her. Jocelynn stated, “I never heard of this scientist, let alone that she was a Latina doctor. I had no idea what to expect when I started researching this scientist. To me, a scientist is someone who wears a lab coat and conducts continuous experiments in a science lab or someone who
