The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant Program required six weeks of instruction from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Grulla High School. On July 12, 2019, the adult students enrolled in the program tested and with great pride Mr. Fernando Godino the RGC- VO-TECH Director announced that 100 % of the adults passed.

The test was approximately 2 hours. The ACE (After School Centers On Education) family engagement specialist, Mrs. Maribel Villarreal hosted a celebration party and provided daily support and tutoring to the adult students. Congratulations to all, on behalf of the RGCCISD and ACE Administration, Grulla High School Administration and staff and RGCCISD School board.

Whether you’re in need of notebooks, rulers or running shoes, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is reminding shoppers they can save money on those and other items during the state’s sales tax holiday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-11.

The law exempts sales tax on qualified items – such as clothing, footwear, school supplies and

backpacks – priced below $100, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

“As Texas families begin the process of replacing their beach towels with lunch boxes, the sales tax holiday is the perfect opportunity to save some money on supplies families need before the school bell rings,” Hegar said. “As a father of three, I know how these expenses

can add up.”

Apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free are listed on the Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Shoppers this year will save an estimated $102.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday.

Texas’ sales tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.

Roma High Students Complete CNA Program

Starr County Judge Eloy Vera presented the keys to a brand new home to Mrs. Esther Vidal of Salineno, TX who was the recipient of a grant through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA). Mrs. Vidal’s home was in dire need of repair and after her application was approved, an evaluation of the home indicated that it was too deteriorated for rehab and the plans began for a new home.

This grant is based on eligibility in order to qualify and Mrs. Vidal met all of the necessary criteria. Starr County Federal Programs Personnel worked closely with her to ensure that the home was built as per grant specifications. Congratulations Mrs. Vidal!

Benjamin “Bennie” Garcia

March 30, 1966 † July 22, 2019 Rio Grande City, Texas --Benjamin Garcia 53, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019 at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen Tx. Benjamin was born in Mission, Tx and raised in Rio Grande City.

He started working with his father in construction at only 6 yrs old. He loved spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, woodwork, and working on his property.

Benjamin was a member of the graduating class of 1984. He enlisted in the Army where he served for 9 years. His service took him to Korea, Honduras, and Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm. He was Honorably Discharged in 1992 as an E5 Sergeant. He attained a bachelor degree in Agricultural Science. He worked in refineries as a trained welder and then continued his education in Occupational Health and Safety (OHST). He loved his work as a Safety Supervisor in Industrial Construction.

Benjamin is preceded in death by his grandparents; stepson, Roberto E. Guevara of Zapata, TX. Benjamin is survived by his wife, Rachel R. Garcia; parents, George & Maria G. Garcia Jr.; sister, Sylvia (Kino) Vela; sons, Alex M. (Michaela) Garcia and Eric M. (Patricia) Valdez; nieces, Savannah (Noe) Garcia and Violet Vela; daughters-in-law, Marizol Guevara and Michaela Garcia; grandchildren, Roberto A. Guevara, Roslyn M. Guevara, Aria R. Grulla High School ACE Students Earn Phlebotomy & Carlos Noel Garza Receive Scholarship Certified Medical Administrative Assistant Certificates! from The Pee Wee Sewing Club Grulla High School students attending the ACE (After School Centers on Education) Program in the Career and Technical Education Building were glowing with Gator pride.

These students did not have to go to summer school or have to attend for STAAR re-testing.

They were very dedicated individuals who made the commitment, not only for themselves but their school.

They caught the bus early M-Thursday for six weeks for three hours a day. Once they – ACE Family engagement earned their required hours they specialist for their support and took the Health department encouragement for the students.

Phlebotomy and Certified Congratulations to all, on Medical Administrative Assistant tests. The students all earned their license as high school students through the ACE program.

The class was taught by Ms. Maribel Zamora, with assistance from Mrs. Tessa Vargas. The Department of Health test was administered by Mr. Fernando Godino.

Rep. Cuellar Fights to Expand and Protect the Integrity of SNAP

Congressman Helps to Address grant will go to creating innovative Hunger on College Campuses strategies to hinder the misuse and Congressman Henry Cuellar abuse of SNAP in Texas.

(TX-28) announced an award of nearly $337,000 to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to improve the state agency’s Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) recipient fraud prevention, detection and investigation efforts.

The funding comes through the Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) SNAP Fraud Framework grant program.

Additionally, Congressman Cuellar has joined Representative Al Lawson’s (FL-5) bill, the College Student Hunger Act of 2019, as an original cosponsor.

The measure will support students who experience food insecurity by expanding the eligibility criteria and removing barriers for SNAP. The Congressman’s efforts to expand and protect SNAP funding follow the Administration’s announcement that it will seek to eliminate state flexibility in SNAP; a policy change which would slash food assistance for at least 3 million people and jeopardize access to free school meals for 500,000 low-income students.

“SNAP plays a critical role in the battle against hunger for people across Texas and throughout the country. However, SNAP cannot achieve its primary purpose of helping individuals afford a basic meal without maintaining program integrity,” said Congressman Cuellar. “This grant will help the state of Texas create new ideas and technologies that improve program operations in order to more effectively serve eligible children, students, seniors, and families.”

“No college student should have to choose between buying textbooks and going hungry,” Congressman Cuellar continued.

“Our nation is better served when our students are focusing on their studies instead of where their next meal will come from. I thank Rep. Lawson for introducing this legislation, providing a muchneeded expansion to SNAP, and ensuring students have the support they need in college.”

“This program is a lifeline for millions of American, including more than 48,000 households in the 28th District of Texas. As members of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, my colleagues and I have the responsibility to allocate funding for SNAP and other critical federal programs, not the Administration.”

Yesterday, in the morning when it wasn’t so hot and while my dog Pal was out to do her duty and do a little exploring, I sat beside my RV to observe what wildlife might come by.

As I’ve told you, I have 5 “bird baths” and they were the main attractions.

A cardinal came along to take a long bath followed by a white tipped dove to have a drink. It’s interesting that some birds, such as doves, can suck water, like we do through a straw, while others take a mouthful and then have to tilt

their head back to drink.

A western cotton-tail rabbit came by and took a very long drink. They apparently have to lap it up with their little tongue which is a slow process. A whitewinged dove eventually scared it off. Rabbits are very fidgety and any movement nearby sends them running.

The highlight of the day was the arrival of a 6 foot indigo snake. It slithered in from between some large flower pots in my garden. How it knew the ground level bird bath was there I don’t know but it headed straight for it. It took a long drink and then curled part of its body in the water and as it left carefully drew all of its body through the water.

The cooling must have felt great.

I should mention that I’m always happy to see an indigo snake. Not only are they not venomous and eat rats and mice but one of their favorite foods is rattlesnakes. They’re wonderful to have around.

So, a reptile, mammal and some birds stopped by for some water in the few minutes I sat watching.

My request to you from a few weeks ago is becoming even more important. Put a ground level dish of water in your yard! Use any wide, shallow dish. The predicted weather for

the next week is lots of sun and temperatures above 100 degrees.

Wildlife needs water as we do.

You can enjoy the antics of the wild things and feel good about the kindness you’ve done for other species.
