City of Roma awards Corporal Jose Rene Aguirre Jr. City of Roma Mayor Roberto Salinas awarded a certificate of appreciation to Marine Corporal, Jose Rene Aguirre Jr. in recognition for his participation in combat operations in the Country of Syria. Corporal Aguirre is the 21yr. old son of Mr. Jose Rene Aguirre and Mrs. Maria Guadalupe Serrano of Roma Texas. Corporal Aguirre Jr. is a 2014 Roma High School Graduate, which later in 2015 got enlisted in the Marines. He is part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) based out of California.
Starr County Campus Psychology Club Adopt-A-Highway Trash Pick-Up On Saturday, July 8, 2017, the Starr County Campus Psychology Club of South Texas College participated in its first ever AdoptA-Highway Trash Pick-Up from 8:00am-12:00pm. The members collected over 20 bags of trash over the 2 mile stretch that the psychology club is responsible for in Rio Grande City close to the STC campus. The monthly Mayor’s Men’s Prayer Breakfast was held on July 11. Mayor Joel Villarreal focused his remarks on the outstanding work that the late Ruben Klein had performed for Rio Grande City as the Water Master. Mayor Villarreal lauded Mr. Klein’s thorough knowledge of public water matters. RGC High School Head Football Coach Aaron Garcia, Rattlers Quarterback Jason Perez, and Mr. Xavier Perez, Jason’s father, were the special guests this month. Coach Garcia stated that he is optimistic about the Rattlers for the coming year. He stressed that he is always striving for improvement on his players. Jason shared some of his experiences at the summer football camps that he has attended this summer. The “Words to Live By” Roma ISD is proud to announce the groundbreaking for its new Roma High School Softball Stadium Grand message was delivered by former Stand with expanded and better seating. This is made possible through the foresight of the Roma ISD School Rattler and former RGC Mayor, Board, which listened to the requests from players, parents and community members for better facilities for Baldemar Garza. The Mayor’s Men’s Prayer Breakfasts are held the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 a.m., at the STC’s Starr County Campus. The event is nondenominational and opened to all men of the community. The Prayer Breakfasts provide an opportunity for men to come together, and in the spirit of community, share how God is working in their lives. The Mayor’s Men’s Prayer Breakfast Planning Committee is composed of Mayor Joel Villarreal, Rev. Jon Herrin, Pastor Emerson Villegas, R.C. Salinas, Baldemar Garza, Dr. Antonio Falcon, and Ruben Saenz.
