Congratulations to Ramiro Barrera Middle School on winning Roma ISD’s 1st Middle School Battle of the Books Competition and to F.J. Scott Elementary School on winning Roma ISD’s 1st Elementary School Battle of the Books Competition! In the elementary competition, Emma Vera Elementary School and Veterans Memorial Elementary School tied for second place, and R. & C. Saenz Elementary School came in third. All the students from every school did an amazing job preparing for the event by reading five lengthy books and answering questions about details in the books they read. It was a big day in Alice, Texas when the Starr County 4-H Junior Intermediate team placed 2nd at the District 4-H Food Challenge competition where there were 13 teams competing in this category.

The South Extension district includes 20 counties and stretches from Eagle Pass to Brownsville to Pleasanton to Kingsville and south. The team members are stars in the kitchen dedicated to learning nutrition, food and cooking safety, selecting and preparing healthy meals and snacks. These are all

important life skills because it helps them make wise food choices that reduces risks of diseases due to bad and harmful food choices.

This team will be demonstrating their culinary skills at the Houston Livestock 4-H Food Challenge Competition.

Sorority Enjoys Programs about Presidents

Members of Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi have enjoyed their twice monthly meetings this fall, with programs featuring United States presidents born in the months of the meetings.

At a meeting hosted by Rosie Garcia, Becky Canales presented a program on Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Chester A. Arthur. A program on Dwight D. Eisenhower and Theodore Roosevelt was presented by Diana Peña at a meeting hosted

by Vangie Anderson. Elda Hinojosa’s meeting featured a program on James K. Polk and James A. Garfield presented by Alma Gloria T. Gonzalez. At a meeting hosted by Elia Perez, the program featured Franklin Pierce and Zachary Taylor.

People in search of critical services such as financial assistance, food, shelter, child care, job search, veteran needs or mental health support often do not know where to begin to get help, or they get overwhelmed

trying to find what they need.

With 2-1-1 Texas the information is available at their fingertips with one simple phone call—by dialing the three-digit code 2-1-1.

The Community Council RGV, in partnership with Health and Human Services, offers the 2-11 Texas program which consists of an Area Information Center (Tip of Texas) that is available to everyone in Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr and Willacy counties 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You will be answered by a live certified agent that will provide you with appropriate resources in your community.

Working together, we continue to collaborate with agencies and organizations in an effort to provide services that are crucial to our unique area.

A current partnership with the Texas Hunger Initiative, for instance, has allowed the Community Council RGV the opportunity to identify agencies

who fight hunger in the Rio Grande Valley.

Recent events, such as Hurricane Harvey have led to a current collaboration with other 211 Texas network all over the state of Texas and affected areas such as Rockport, Houston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Beaumont, Port Arthur to mention some. “Connecting People and Services” is a motto we firmly stand by and incorporate into our mission, vision and values.

The Family of Cecilio and Becky Rodriguez are honoring the Legacy of Valentin and Severina, parents of eleven children, Cecilio being the oldest, who gave their children all they had to give, by living a life of honesty and hard work by example.

Texas Beta Eta Tau Sweetheart

Jeannie Michele Brown Anderson

Texas Beta Eta Tau Sweetheart, Jeannie Michele Anderson, was born and raised in Huntsville, Texas. She graduated from Shepherd High School at the top of her class in 1994 and continued her education at Sul Ross State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Jeannie began her teaching career in Del Rio, Texas and in 2002 she moved to Rio Grande City with her family where she continued her career as a 4th grade English teacher with the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District.

She was selected by her peers as the Teacher of the Year for Dr. Mario E. Ramirez Elementary in 2007. During her time with RGCCISD, in addition to her classroom experiences, she has served as a cheerleading sponsor, UIL Spelling and Ready Writing Coach and tutorial teacher. In 2012, Jeannie graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Master of Library Science and is currently serving in her fifth year as the librarian for Roque Guerra, Jr. Elementary.

Jeannie is a member of the Texas Library Association under the Division of Texas Association of School Librarians

and the Children’s Literature Round Table. She is a member of Saint John United Methodist Church where she has served as Lay Leader and Liturgist for several years. She has been a member of the Florence J. Scott Study Club and Texas Beta Eta Tau since 2013. She also serves on the Starr County Youth Fair Board of Directors. In her capacity of volunteer for the Starr County Youth Fair she has organized Public School Days at the Starr County Fair as well as implementing the Academic Rodeo. The event was created to allow 3rd – 8th grade Starr County students who might not otherwise be able to participate in the fair the opportunity to showcase their talents in this venue. Jeannie serves as the School Liaison Chairman, as well as being a part of the Media, Parade and Youth Scrambles Committees. She was honored to have been chosen as the Starr County Fair’s Volunteer of the Year for 2017.

In her free-time, Jeannie enjoys spending an afternoon reading or taking in a long jog. She looks forward to spending time at the ranch and the occasional leisurely horseback ride with her husband.

Jeannie married Douglas Anderson in January of 1996 and they have just celebrated their 22nd anniversary. She has two children, Ethan Douglas Anderson (19), who is attending Universal Technical Institute in Houston, Texas and Natalie Michele Anderson (16) who is a sophomore at Rio Grande City High School.

Jeannie would like to thank her sorority sisters from Texas Beta Eta Tau for the honor of representing their chapter as the 2018 Sweetheart.

Lilliana Olivarez, daughter of George and Lydia Duran, is married to Mark Olivarez, United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant. Together they have two children, Edgar Jr. and Madison Alysse. As a graduate of RGCCISD schools and the University of Texas Pan American, Lilly started her career in education as a 5th grade teacher and then a counselor.

She is currently the principal at Grulla Elementary.

Lilly has a strong sense of community and has enthusiastically assisted in many community events over the years. As a proud member of the Rio Grande City Jaycees,

Feast of Sharing. As a member of the RGC Woman’s Club, she has helped in events such as the Starr County Youth Fair, the Ronald McDonald house fundraising, and many recycling projects.

As a member of the American Cancer Society, Lilly has helped to organize the Relay for Life of Starr County, raising thousands of dollars for this great cause. As a sister of Beta Theta Iota, Lilly has participated in projects such as providing jackets, backpacks, and school supplies to students in need, donating money to Hurricane relief, and sending care packages to military troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

In joining her sorority of Beta Theta Iota, Lilly not only found a group of women who shared similar interests and experiences, but she found life long friends who have been there for her through the good and the bad.

Lilly would like to thank her sisters for bestowing her with the honor of being named the 2018 Beta Theta Iota Sweetheart.

Alexia Lyann Pena is the seventeen year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Amando Pena III. She is the granddaughter of Deacon and Mrs. Amando Pena Jr. She is representing Texas Preceptor Xi Omega as their 2018 debutante. Alexia is currently a junior at McAllen Memorial High School where she is in the top five percent of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Interact Club, the Yearbook Club, HOSA-Future Health Professionals as well as a member of the Hidalgo County Cotillion.

She is also a representative of her Junior Class.

Alexia was accepted and attended a summer medical program in Georgetown University in Washington D.C. where she experienced college life while taking courses geared towards medical students.

Alexia’s passion lies with dancing principally in ballet.

She has been a student at the Deborah Case Dance Academy since she was two years old.

Her years of commitment to dance has brought her many accolades and achievements.

She is currently a soloist for the Rio Grande Valley Ballet with roles in The Nutcracker. She has performed in the roles of Clara, the Arabian Princess, and her most recent was as the Snow Queen when The Nutcracker was presented at the McAllen’s Civic Center this past December.

Her devotion to the art of dance continues to extend as she has trained with the American Ballet Theatre from New York City.

She then auditioned and was accepted to the Bolshoi Moscow Ballet Summer Program. She has worked with renowned ballet artists such as Florian Roviller, Irina Vakhromeeva, and Michael Rodriguez.

Alexia enjoys dancing in her spare time but she also devotes her spare time to tutoring kids through several school programs. Upon graduation with the Class of 2019, Alexia plans to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where she will study medicine and pursue a career as a doctor in radiology.

Gabriella Yuliana Pérez is the daughter of Mr. Gilberto Pérez III and Mrs. María Teresa Pérez from Roma, Texas. She has three sisters; Daniella Ysabel Pérez, Ana Mariella Pérez, and Graciella Ileana Pérez.

Gabriella attended Immaculate Conception School in Rio Grande City, Texas and graduated in 2015. She is currently a junior at Roma High School in Roma.

Gabriella is a member of the Roma High School Dazzler’s Dance Team and participated in this year’s Roma High School’s Musical “West Side Story”.

Gabriella has been a member of the Roma FFA Chapter for nine years and participates in the

Starr County Fair in Rio Grande City where she has participated in Baking, has shown Market Animals, Farm Shop projects and received Grand Champion in the Horticulture Division in 2017.

She also participates in The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show in Mercedes where she has received Excellent and Superior Quality for her Metal Art projects and for her Home and Garden projects.

Gabriella was a member of the 2016-2017 Roma High School Ladies Swim Team District Champions and made the Regional Top Eight Team with the 200 Medley Relay.

Gabriella is a member of the Roma Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas where she volunteers in a variety of activities.

Gabriella enjoys dancing, listening to music, exercising, and spending time with her friends and family.

Gabriella Yuliana Pérez is the granddaughter of Sorority Sister Elda G. Pérez of the Texas Delta Theta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, a member for over fifty years.

Beta Zeta Omicron is honoring Lori Peterson Perez as this year’s sweetheart. Lori is married to Xavier Eli Perez, son of Yolanda and the late Gustavo Perez, and they have four sons, Dustin Alan, Jason Eli, Bryan Ray and Steven James Perez. She is the daughter of Jewel “Tissa” Peterson, who is a member of Texas Delta Theta Master, and the late James E. Peterson. When the Starr County Council of Beta Sigma Phi began in 2011, Lori was on the organizing board and served as the first Council President. In her sorority, she has served in many capacities, including three years as president, and she has been serving as treasurer since 2009.

Born in Roma, Lori attended West Grammar Elementary (now Roque Guerra Jr.), Immaculate Conception School and Ringgold Junior High before graduating from Rio Grande City High School in 1989. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1993 from Texas A&M University and her Doctor of Jurisprudence

degree in 1997 from St. Mary’s University School of Law, where she served as Chairman of the Board of Advocates. Lori is an attorney serving as Assistant County Attorney for Starr County and has her own law office. She is a member of the Order of the Barristers, the College of the State Bar of Texas, the Pro Bono College, the Family Law Foundation, the Aggie Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, and the Starr County Bar Association.

Lori and Xavier were honored to serve as the parade marshals in the Rio Grande City Christmas Parade in 2009. She is the organist at First Baptist Church of Rio Grande City. As a member of the Florence J. Scott Study Club, Lori has held many offices including serving as president for two years. She is the vice president of the Starr County Fair Association and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2014.

Lori serves as vice president of the Rio Grande City Economic Development Corporation and is also a member of the Texas A&M Former Students Association, the Hidalgo-Starr A&M Club and the Texas 4-H Alumni Association, the Rattler Quarterback Club, and the Rattler Baseball Booster Club.

She and Xavier enjoy supporting their children in their various endeavors including football, baseball, basketball, golf, track, band, 4-H, hunting and fishing, and especially academics, with an emphasis on 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

They are Ariana Michelle, Faith Brielle, Kevin Sergio and Steven Agustin. Michelle graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1994. She then pursued her passion as a dental assistant. After several years and much encouragement from the doctors she worked with, in 2002, she received her Associates in Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Texas State College. Michelle knew that she needed to do more to help her community so she pursued her career in marketing and public relations.

She has worked to help geriatric, pediatric and adult patients with nursing services, therapy, wound care and other social service needs. She has worked in this field for approximately twelve years and has learned that there are still many other ventures that she would like to pursue.

In 2000, Michelle opened and operated two child care centers as a new business venture. It was there where she realized that she had a passion for business.

After twelve years in operation she is now completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Business in Organizational Leadership.

Michelle volunteers her time as a catechist at Immaculate Conception Church where she has served the children of our community for three years. She is proud to say that she participated in an ACTS retreat in 2012 and has since tried her best to serve God and her community. Her hobbies include swimming, playing tennis, and enjoying the great outdoors with her family at the ranch. She continues pushing forward to be a positive role model for her family, friends, and community. She’s looking forward to spending a fun evening and dancing the night away!

Texas Preceptor Pi Omicron Sweetheart

Veronica Ibarra

Veronica Ibarra Whitworth is this year’s Sweetheart for the Texas Preceptor Pi Omicron chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She is the wife of Brad Whitworth and mother to her exuberant three-year-old son, Austin Bradley Whitworth.

Veronica has been an educator for thirteen years and is currently molding the minds of our future in physics and forensic science at the Preparatory for Early College High School in Rio Grande

City. She is a former graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, “Hook ‘Em Horns”, and is currently working on a Master of Science degree in biology from Texas A&M University at Commerce.

Veronica enjoys training for half-marathons and picked up this sport back in 2012 when she ran her first long race to honor her late grandfather Narcisco Ruiz. Since then she has run five half-marathons and one full marathon. Veronica was able to run four of her six races as a member of Team in Training, in which she raised a total of eight thousand dollars to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Veronica is a firm believer in the motto, “I run for cupcakes.” So, when she is not training for her next big race, you can find her in the kitchen baking sweet treats with her son Austin and husband Brad. In her spare time, you can find her reading a good book on mystery or romance.

Texas Preceptor Xi Omega proudly presents their 2018 Sweetheart, Mrs. Dalinda Pena.

Dalinda is married to Deacon Amando Pena Jr. They have been married for thirty-eight years and are the proud parents of three children Amando III, Maria Liana, and Reynaldo Pena. They are the grandparents of eight grandchildren.

Dalinda is originally from San Isidro, Texas where she graduated from San Isidro High School.

She also attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas.

Dalinda has been very active with her sorority Texas Preceptor Xi Omega, Pan American Round Table-Rio Grande City/Roma Chapter where she is currently the Associate Director, and the Catholic Daughters of America.

She is a member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church where she is very involved in the church’s ministries. She has served as Eucharistic Minister and has been a CCE teacher for over twentyfive years. She has served in the church Jamaica committees as chairperson helping organize this yearly event. She is now involved in the ACTS ministries where the word of God is spread through work and service in the church and community.

Dalinda and her husband have been business owners for over thirty years. She is co-owner of AD Mercantile, Border Town and Border Hardware Stores.

She has a passion for business and continues to play an active role in the administration of these businesses. She now works alongside her husband, daughter, and two sons to make their businesses successful.

In her spare time, Dalinda enjoys going fishing with her husband. She loves spending time with her grandchildren and attending their activities. She also enjoys going to the gym and taking Zumba classes.

Dalinda is a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi and Texas Preceptor Xi Omega is honored to present her as their 2018 Sweetheart.

Texas Preceptor Pi Beta proudly presents Mariela Miranda Resendez as their debutante at the 2017 Sweetheart Dance. Mariela is the daughter of Gilbert and Christina Resendez Jr. She is the granddaughter of Roberto and Adriana Gutierrez and the late Gilberto and Mireya Resendez. Her sister, Mia, will be joining her in this celebration.

Mariela is a sophomore at Rio Grande City High School and is taking dual classes at STC. She is currently volunteering at local pharmacies, nursing homes and at the Starr County Memorial Hospital. Mariela keeps active playing softball with the Rattlers

and during the off season she travels with her travel team Alliance. She is also a student trainer with the Mighty Rattlers and hopes to pursue this as a career. Mariela has had a love of animals since she was little and is proud to be a member of The Vaquero 4-H. She plans on showing a rabbit and entering in the baking category in the annual Starr County Youth Fair.

She has attended several summer programs in Maryland with the Cal Ripken Youth Baseball/ Softball Camp which was an unforgettable experience. She has also traveled to New York, Washington, Philadelphia and Boston where she was able to experience a variety of foods and entertainment. Mariela enjoys reading, especially books that are being produced as movies, such as the Maze Runner Series, Divergent Series, If I Stay, The Fault in Our Stars, Every Thing Every Thing, Paper Towns and many more. She also enjoys playing softball, driving, hunting and spending time with her family and friends. She is looking forward to dancing the night away with her sister, cousins, and friends at the Sweetheart Dance.

Ramiro Barrera Middle School Grulla High School JROTC Students Perform at Vipers Game Leadership Takes Charge The Grulla High School JROTC Program has come into the 2017-2018 School Year full of energy and ready to take the program to the next level.

Under the Leadership of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Martina Sanchez the goals have been set now it is up to all of the Battalion to achieve excellence.

Retired Teachers Meeting

The Starr County Retired S c h o o l Employees Association (SCRSEA) m e e t s every 3rd Thursday of each month, and on Jan. 18th EDC Executive Director Dalinda Guillen shared with the group updated information on the economic growth and development taking place in the area.

It was reported that retired school educators from this unit performed more than 11,000 volunteer hours for 2017. These volunteer hours were monetarily valued at more than 250,000 dollars.

Starr County Fair Volunteers of the Year Announced

The Starr County Fair Association has named its Individual and Group Volunteers of the Year for the 2018 Starr County Youth Fair. Honored as Individual Volunteers are Deborah McGuffin-Gonzalez and Tanya Villarreal Peña. Group Volunteers of the Year are the Florence Johnson Scott Study Club and the Woman’s Club of Rio Grande City, members of GFWC Texas.

Debbie has been volunteering with the Starr County Fair for the past ten years and prior to that, volunteered at the LIFE Exposition and Show in Laredo, Texas.

She states, “My husband, Homer Gonzalez, has been volunteering as long as I have with the Starr County Fair. We pretty much do everything together, so whatever I’m involved in, so is he. Both of our boys, Matthew A. Gonzalez and Garrett J. Gonzalez, have been showing since they were nine years old. They began their involvement in 4-H in Laredo and then continued with 4-H and FFA once we moved to Rio Grande. Both of them have participated in showing rabbits, goats, steers, heifers, and bulls and competed in showmanship. They also competed in baking. As a result, they have become productive and responsible young men because of their involvement in the Starr County Youth Fair.

Debbie has served as an Advisory Board Member for Showmanship, Sponsorship, Buying Committee, and

Baking Committee, and has been a willing assistant to any other group if needed. She also serves on the Starr County Farm Bureau Board and has helped judge the Barrel Painting contest and Farm Bureau scholarships.

She adds, “It has been a pleasure working alongside many talented volunteers from throughout the county and watching all of the youth who participate in our fair flourish year after year. Seeing the smiles on the youth is worth all of the hard work and dedication that comes with being a volunteer.”

Ta n y a ’s t i m e volunteering at the fair has been extensive.

She has been volunteering with the fair for 25 years, starting out in the office assisting Vangie Anderson, Alma Moreno and Debra Villarreal. She states, “I have had the pleasure of being the office manager and, for the past few years, sponsorship and showmanship chairman.

Her father, Tomas E. Villarreal, assisted in the management of the beer garden and anywhere else he is needed.

Her husband, Lupe Pena, also assisted in the management of the beer garden.

She adds, “My entire family has been instrumental and supportive of our girls’ participation and preparation with their livestock exhibits.

Tanya states, “The honor of being named Individual Volunteer of the Year, alongside my closest friend, has meant a great deal to me. The countless

hours our volunteers put in to the fair in making it more successful than the previous years is sometimes unnoticed or taken for granted. Our volunteers use up family time, days off from work and countless hours on the phone making sure the fairgrounds are ready for the influx of exhibitors and their projects. I wish that all fair volunteers be recognized for their hard work and contribution to the success of the fair and be named individual volunteers of the year.”

She adds, “Being a prior exhibitor and sharing my experiences with my girls has made them who they are today. They have learned that the outcome may not always be in their favor, but utilize any criticism to better themselves and make them stronger showmen. The fair helps in building character, strong family ties, and sportsmanship.”

The Group Volunteers of the Year are member clubs of the International organization GFWC, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, whose tagline is “Living the Volunteer Spirit.”

The Woman’s Club of Rio Grande City has been serving the communities of Rio Grande City and Roma for over 90 years, and the F. J. Scott Study Club, founded as a junior club by the Woman’s Club, has been in service for over 50 years. Members of both clubs have assisted with the Fair since its inception.

The Study Club started the Starr County Fair Pageant in 1975 with Mrs. Bernardo de la Garza serving as chairman for the event, at which Yvonne Rodriguez was named the 1975 Fair Queen. First runner-up was Karen Shelton, and second runnerup was Teresa Carrera. The Study Club members enjoyed putting on a skit each year as part of the pageant’s entertainment. They conducted the pageant for about ten years before turning it over to the Starr County 4-H Council.

Members of both organizations have held several positions on the Starr County Board of Directors over the years and have served on numerous VOLUNTEERS, section II, page 3

North Grammar Elementary Most people have never seen a hummingbird moth Hosted Report Card Night Last year, while sitting in the shade, with a friend of mine, watching birds, it flew by. “It” was something neither of us had ever seen.

It appeared at first to be a hummingbird flitting from flower to flower. We quickly realized, however, that it wasn’t. My friend quickly took a couple of pictures. As it hovered over a flower, we tried to get a close look to identify it.

With some careful observation and some subsequent research revealed was that it was a hummingbird moth. I’d never seen one and you probably haven’t either. They’re found along the Canadian west coast, through Canada and in the eastern half of the U. S., including Texas.

Most people see them and mistakenly think they’ve seen a hummingbird or perhaps a big bumblebee.

The scientific name is Hemaris thysbe and they are moths!

Once thought, due to individual variations, to be 9 species, careful observation reduced the 9 to this 1. Worldwide, there are several other species but this is the one you’re likely to see here.

They have a wingspan of about 2 inches, a spindle shaped body which has greenish “fur” on the thorax and an abdomen colored, variously, in a shade of maroon. Called “clearwings,” the wings at birth are a sort of deep maroon but some of the scales fall off and the wings develop areas that are transparent. One feature that is an excellent field mark for identifying Hemaris thysbe is that the legs, if you can get a look at them, are light colored, usually yellow.

A feature that I was delighted to observe was its tail. It looks like a small squarish painter’s

brush.

Females attract males using a pheromone it releases. In its northern range, it has one brood cycle per year but here in the south it has at least two or several life cycles. It goes through complete metamorphosis. The caterpillars are found on fruit trees including hawthorns. The caterpillars are yellowish-green with a thin green stripe down the back bordered with white and along each side runs a yellow stripe. Significantly, it has a posterior “horn.” As caterpillars grow they shed their skin several times, each time is called an instar. It’s been found that during the final instar, the fifth, the body becomes pinkish-purple. At that stage the caterpillar drops to the ground, burrows its way into the leaf litter and pupates, emerging in several weeks as a new adult hummingbird moth.

Adults fly during the hot parts of the day, collecting nectar from flowers and attracting observers like me. Their effect on the

environment is essentially neutral so let’s just enjoy them on those rare occasions when they visit our gardens.
