Congratulations to Roma High School’s Robotics Team, who took home 3rd place at the TCEA Meet held at Robert Vela High School in Edinburg. The competition was sponsored by TCEA and the students entered the Advanced Arena Contest. Students Julie Hernandez, Catalina Galvan and Jerry Garcia designed, built, and programmed their robot.

The 2018 Starr County Fair Queen and court were crowned at the annual Youth Fair Pageant held Saturday evening in the Roma ISD Performing Arts Center. Joshlynn Michelli Flores is the 2018 Queen. A senior at Early College High School, Joshlynn is the daughter of Juan and Pearl Flores. The Queen, pictured at far left, is shown with her Court, l-r, Teen Princess Brianna Renee Garcia, daughter of Ricardo and Vilma Gutierrez; Preteen Princess Katarina Emma Mendoza daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Eulogio Mendoza III; Petite Princess Dannaly Aviña, daughter of Denisse & Jose Luis Aviña; Precious Princess Lexani Lucia Gonzalez, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jorge A. Gonzalez II; and Starr County Cowboy Erik Aaden Sepulveda, Jr., son of Erik and Yvette Sepulveda. Eliza Briana Rodriguez, 2017 Starr County Fair Queen, was on hand for her final walk, to help present awards, and to assist throughout the pageant. Congratulations to Ramiro Barrera Middle School on winning Roma ISD’s 1st Middle School Battle of the Books Competition and to F.J. Scott Elementary School on winning Roma ISD’s 1st Elementary School Battle of the Books Competition! In the elementary competition, Emma Vera Elementary School and Veterans Memorial Elementary School tied for second place, and R. & C. Saenz Elementary School came in third. All the students from every school did an amazing job preparing for the event by reading five lengthy books and answering questions about details in the books they read. It was a big day in Alice, Texas when the Starr County 4-H Junior Intermediate team placed 2nd at the District 4-H Food Challenge competition where there were 13 teams competing in this category. The South Extension district includes 20 counties and stretches from Eagle Pass to Brownsville to Pleasanton to Kingsville and south. The team members are stars in the kitchen dedicated to learning nutrition, food and cooking safety, selecting and preparing healthy meals and snacks. These are all

important life skills because it helps them make wise food choices that reduces risks of diseases due to bad and harmful food choices. This team will be demonstrating their culinary skills at the Houston Livestock 4-H Food Challenge Competition. 4-H Members of the Junior Intermediate food challenge team include: L.J. Rocha -Vaquero 4-H, Mary Grace Garcia - Vaquero 4-H, Meagan Castillo - Vaquero 4-H, Daniella Garza - Rattler 4-H, and Andres Cantu - Rattler 4-H.
