Juan and Laura Garcia have been selected as the Parade Marshals for the 2025 Starr County Fair. They have been part of the Starr County Fair in numerous capacities, including 4-H leaders for over 15 years and members of the Starr County Fair Association for about 20 years.

Juan is currently a director for the Starr County Fair Association.

He is the co-chair of the shop division and a member of the livestock validation, steer and wild game dinner committees.

He previously served in the horticulture and parade float committee. This year he is the FFA advisor for Grulla High School.

Laura serves as a director with the Starr County Fair Association representing Rio Grande City Grulla ISD. She is the co-chair of the wild game dinner committee and has previously served with the pageant and parade float committees.

Both honorees are also part of the 4-H Adult Leaders committee with the Starr County Extension office, as well as members of the Starr County Farm Bureau where Juan serves as a board member.

They stated, “We are the proud parents of Juan M. Garcia, Jr. and Abigail Garcia, who were members of Los Ranchitos 4-H and participated in the Starr County Fair for many years. They exhibited goats, rabbits, heifers, horticulture and baking projects as well.” They added, “The last few years we have gladly sponsored FFA/4-H members who have an interest in breeding cattle projects.

They added, “We are excited to see the youth participation at the Fair grow over the years and, most importantly, the increase in scholarship opportunities for the youth in our county. We are humbled and honored to have been selected as parade marshals for 2025. We are looking forward to a great 2025 Starr County Fair, “Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow.”

OBITUARY

Daniel “Danny” Vasquez August 4, 1951 † January 5, 2025

Danny Vasquez entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Starr County Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side. Danny’s 73 years of life was full of love, compassion, and family.

Danny was born on August 4, 1951 to Manuela and David Vasquez in Santa Rosa, Texas. Danny had 11 brothers and sisters.

Danny is survived by his wife, Noelia (Barrera) Vasquez, of 44 years. Danny had 4 children: Robbie Vasquez (Denise), Elias Vasquez (Marta), Oscar David Vasquez (†), Jennifer Vasquez- Gonzalez (Alex). He was also blessed with eight grandchildren Aaron, Daniel, Riley, Edgar, Sophia, Oscar, Katia and Addison. He is also survived by his brothers, David and Lupe (Clarissa), and sisters Eva (Jerry †) and Leonor (George).

Danny now joins his late parents, brothers, and his beloved son, Oscar, in eternal rest.

Danny spent his youth involved in many different sports and activities. Many remember him as a strong athlete and an academic whiz. His athletic ability and academic

achievements gained him a scholarship to play football for Rice University. Danny later transferred to Texas A&I University to continue his football career where he was an Academic All-American. After graduating from Texas A&I, Danny worked at school districts across the valley, finally settling in Rio Grande City.

Danny dedicated his life to serving students and athletes, holding various roles as a teacher, coach and administrator. He loved coaching his children and grandchildren, and you could always catch him at a track meet or a game. Danny was a familiar face at the Texas track meets and he officiated at the state track meet every year with his brothers.

If he was not at a sports event, you would find him solving a crossword puzzle, playing dominos or enjoying a game of chess. For Danny, Sundays were for family and football.

He loved his Cowboys.

Danny had a profound love for his family and will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Ma. Teresa is the second daughter of the late Noé Elizondo and Idolina A. Elizondo from McAllen, Texas and the daughterin-law of Elda G. Pérez and the late Gilberto Pérez Jr. from Roma, Texas. She has been a member of her chapter for two years and is proud and honored to represent her sorority sisters.

Ma. Teresa graduated from McAllen High School in 1988. She graduated from the University of Texas Pan American in 1993 with a bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Early Childhood Education.

She received her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision in 2010 from Grand Canyon University. In her 27 years of teaching she has had the experience of teaching from three year olds to fifth grade students, special education students,

for 37 years. Elizabeth has also been a GED instructor, and an adjunct professor for both South Texas College (STC) as well as for University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

She is excited to be a part of her chapter; She says, “This sisterhood has made such a lasting impact on her personal and professional growth. She’s not just teaching and leading educators – she’s helping them share their knowledge with the world.

Mrs. Chapa has been married to Francisco Chapa III for 40 years and they are the proud parents of (2) sons; Francisco Hilario Chapa (Lora Lee) and Willie Chapa (Bianca), and is raising her 10-yearold granddaughter Liz Elaina

Pérez-Moreno (Dr. of Occupational Therapy), Ana Mariella Pérez (Speech Pathologist), Gabriella Y. Pérez (Electrophysiology Mapping Specialist) and Graciella I. Pérez

dyslexia students and currently is the Section 504 teacher at Veterans Memorial Elementary with Roma ISD. As a teacher, her goal is to be able to provide students with the security, knowledge, and understanding that anything and everything is possible if you try. In 2018 Veterans Memorial Elementary nominated her as Teacher of the Year.

Ma. Teresa has also been an active member for 25 years in The Pan American Round Table of Rio Grande City - Roma where she has served as an officer including Table Director from 2006 - 2009.

Ma. Teresa is a member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma, Texas and is also an active member in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of Oblates #1978 where she is currently the Recording Secretary.

In her spare time, Ma. Teresa enjoys traveling, spending time with her family and watching K-dramas.

As a TMTA Student Affiliate, she has earned numerous gold and silver medals at the state conference for her solos, convention projects, and Whitlock Theory Tests.

Rory’s love for music runs deep, and she enjoys learning new songs in her spare time.

She also plays guitar and enjoys having jam sessions with her friends on electric and acoustic guitar.

Rory is also a member of Rattler Venom Productions and starred in the Night Before

Christmas this school year. This year she is a cast member for RGCHS in UIL One Act Play.

As a Girl Scout, she has earned the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Awards and is in the planning stages of her Gold Award project.

She has served as a Delegate for the Rio/Roma Service Unit at the GSGST Annual Business Meeting for the past 3 years.

Rory is also a member of Rattler 4H. She has been a part of the Starr County Youth Fair for the past 10 years, participating in events including the Academic Rodeo, Baking, Educational Posters, Arts and Crafts, and Photography. She is also a member of the Starr County 4H Spice Girls Food Challenge team.

Upon graduation, Rory hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin and study Music and English.

Laurel is a student at Starr Music Academy where she takes lessons in piano and guitar. She is a 6 time member of the Magic Valley Music Teachers Association Piano Ensemble.

She has also earned numerous medals at the TMTA state conference for her solos and projects. She enjoys volunteering as a student page at the local and state competitions and earned the TMTA Runner-up Student Page of the Year in 2024.

Laurel is a member of Rattler 4H.

She has been an active member in her club for 7 years and enjoys attending meetings and volunteering. She has also participated in the Starr County Youth Fair since Pre-Kindergarten in events including the Academic Rodeo, Baking, Educational Posters, Arts and Crafts, and Photography.

Laurel is interested in studying mental health disorders and plans to pursue a degree in Psychology in hopes of becoming a Clinical Psychologist.

High School, Andrea excels as a Lady Rattler, participating in volleyball and track. Her passion for community involvement began early, as a devoted member of the Rattler 4-H Club since the age of 5.

Over the years, Andrea has grown into a leader, currently serving as the Rattler 4-H Delegate and a Starr County 4-H Council Member.

Gabriella “Ella” Rose Margo is the 16-year-old daughter of Dr. & Mrs. Javier D. Margo, Jr. of Rio Grande City. Her mother, Lisa Margo, and grandmother, Elizabeth Margo, are members of the Beta Eta Tau Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Ella is a sophomore at the

Preparatory for Early College High School (ECHS), where she is an A honor roll student. She is dually enrolled at South Texas College, pursuing an Associate Degree. She hopes to further her education at Rice University after high school.

Ella currently serves as the president of the Debate Club, the Drama Club, and the Pokémon Club at ECHS. She is also a theatre student at Rio Grande City High School, where she is the PR Manager for Rattler Venom Productions.

Ella enjoys theatre and has been very active in UIL One Act Play. Her credits include Dark Road, Cagebirds, and Moon Over Buffalo, for which she earned District Best Performer for the role of Charlotte Hay. For the past 10 years, Ella has been in Rattler 4-H, where she currently serves as Secretary. Her

favorite 4-H activities are rabbits and culinary arts. Her Food Challenge team advanced to the state competition at the 2024 Texas 4-H-Roundup.

Ella has served her community with numerous 4-H projects and Girl Scout projects. She earned the Girl Scout Silver Award by assisting the RGC Animal Kennel with building pet cages, hosting an adoption event, and providing spay and neuter education.

Beta Eta Tau’s 2024 Sweetheart is RoxAnne Garza Cantu. She is the daughter of Rene and Hortencia Garza of Rio Grande City, Texas.

She and her husband, Bobby, have four wonderful children: Laurel, Arora, Matthew, and Catherine.

RoxAnne graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 2000.

She attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in

2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In 2003 she began working as a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. In 2006 she began graduate school at Texas Woman’s University to further her education, and in 2008 she graduated with a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology.

RoxAnne is a member of the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association. She is a Speech Language Pathologist at RGCGISD where she has worked for the past 19 years.

RoxAnne and her family are members of Immaculate Conception Church. RoxAnne is also very active in the community.

She is a Texas Exes Life Member and a member of the HidalgoStarr Texas Exes. RoxAnne is also a member of the Republican Women of Starr County and

currently serves as the club’s secretary. RoxAnne’s passion for scouting has led her to serve as a Girl Scout volunteer for the past 10 years. She is also a Committee Member of Boy Scout Troop 93 in Rio Grande City where she serves as the troop’s Advancement Chair.

RoxAnne is her family’s number one supporter and can been seen supporting her children at football games, concerts, marching band competitions, plays, and programs. She is a die-hard Texas Longhorn football fan and enjoys cheering for the Longhorns every Saturday while wearing burnt orange.

RoxAnne’s favorite Bible verse is Matthew 17:20: “For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Cecilia Claret Hinojosa

Cecilia Claret Hinojosa is the 15 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jose O. & Cynthia Hinojosa of Rio Grande City. Cecilia is a Sophomore at Rio Grande City High School where she maintains A Honor Roll and is taking college classes as part of the dual enrollment program through

South Texas College.

Cecilia is part of the Lady Rattlers Track and Cross Country teams and enjoys weight training.

Cecilia is also part of a 5 year cohort program through Region One’s GEARUP and DHR Health Institute for Research & Development. This program, Leaders in Academics, Science, Education, and Research (LASER) provides opportunities for Cecilia to participate in hands-on health care simulations, summer internships, job shadowing in the medical field, and other leadership experiences.

As a member of the Rattler 4-H program, Cecilia has participated and placed in Horticulture, Photography, and Baking at the Starr County Fair. She also made it to state competition with Food Challenge and the Spice Girls team at the 2024 Texas 4-H Roundup in

College Station. In previous years, Cecilia was the Starr County Fair Princess and Junior Miss Starr County.

One of Cecilia’s most honored achievements has been when she earned the Silver Award with the Girl Scouts. Her project for this award was assisting the RGC Animal Kennel with hosting pet adoptions, making brochures for spaying and neutering animals and building and donating pet cages to this organization.

Cecilia and her family attend Immaculate Conception Church where she has been actively working towards her sacrament of Confirmation for the past two years. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor photography. Cecilia hopes to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio and go into the medical field.

In 1931, during the Great Depression, there was a need for an organization that could bring women together and expose them to a social, cultural and educational climate that was not available in those difficult times.

Most important, there was a need for friendship and support from other women.

Beta Sigma Phi was created out of this need. It did not take long before Beta Sigma Phis were helping others.

Members worked together to raise $22 million in war bonds during World War II. The 1950s brought peace and prosperity to the world, and Beta Sigma Phi membership doubled.

This era was filled with grand balls, elegant teas and the growing strength of sisterhood as thousands of women joined Beta Sigma Phi. As the times have changed, so has Beta Sigma Phi. The 1960s and 1970s found our organization less formal, but the ideals were the same. Now in the 21st Century, our over 165,000 members find the more we grow, the more valuable we become to our sisters and to our communities.

Warning signs of electrical problems Homeowners know that owning a home provides a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Home ownership also can increase the chances individuals view their homes as a sanctuary where they can relax and enjoy creature comforts they’ve personally chosen.

The comfort people feel inside their homes can be compromised when they begin to suspect certain safety issues, including electrical problems. The Electrical Safety Foundation estimates that home electrical fires account for roughly 51,000 fires and 500 deaths each

year. Electrical problems will not always cause home fires, but it’s still wise for homeowners to learn the potential warning signs that something is amiss with their home electrical systems. · Flickering lights: Flickering lights are more than a mere nuisance. Bulbs sometimes flicker because they become loose, which can be remedied by turning the fixture off, waiting for the bulb to cool down to the touch and then tightening it.

However, if the bulb was already tight when it was flickering, then the ESFI warns this could be a

sign of an overloaded circuit.

The tech experts at CNET advise homeowners to contact a certified electrician if they suspect their home electrical circuit is overloaded. · Frequently tripped circuits: In a day and age when people rely so heavily on electronic devices like routers, desktop computers, tablets, smartphones, and more, a tripped circuit that cuts power to a home can be a major nuisance.

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD and Revive Fort Ringgold Presents Civil War Exhibit “War & Peace on the Rio Grande 1861-1867” The Rio Grande City Grulla ISD and Revive Fort Ringgold, in collaboration with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will host “War & Peace on the Rio Grande, 1961-1867,” an exhibit that reveals activities, battles, and key characters that played and important role in US Civil War history along the natural and international border between the US and Mexico.

The traveling museum exhibit stands at the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD Multipurpose Complex. It features historical characters, events, life-size mannequins, and artifacts from the period, will be on display beginning February 9, 2025 and will stand through the end of May 2025. There will be a community reception on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 5pm with guest speakers to talk about the inspiration for the creation of this exhibit.

The exhibit covers several aspects of Civil War history along the 200-mile trail between Laredo and Brownsville along the Rio Grande in South Texas.

These themes include US Colored Troops, economic trade of the region, military battles

and skirmishes, and Tejanos who served on both the Union and Confederate sides of the war. The exhibit allows the visitors to walk through time and experience where these historic events took place. The exhibit was designed, developed, and produced by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s CHAPS (Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools) Program in Edinburg. Visitors can engage with South Texas history and learn just how interesting, intriguing, and historically significant this subject is.

There are also two, short 9-minute films that accompany the exhibit at well. “Cotton

Times” is a film which discusses the economic trade importance of this ‘white gold’ in funding the Confederacy throughout the entire US Civil War and “A Letter From Roma” highlights US Colored Troops who were stationed in Starr County and their experience protecting the border and rebuilding forts along the Rio Grande after the war was over.

There is a tremendous amount of history just waiting to be uncovered with this exhibit.
