Congratulations to Grulla High School Battle of the Books Team for earning 1st place at RGCGISD Battle of the Books district event! On Monday, February, 13th the Grulla High School Battle of the Books Team participated in the RGCGISD 2nd Annual Battle of the Books district event in Ringgold Middle School. The GHS Gator Team won 1st place in the event. The team members are: Esmeralda Hinojosa, Mia Martinez, Sarah Salinas, and Kiara Valencia. Each member of the team won wireless earbuds. Elementary Students Received Information about Roma High Students Explore Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Threat Prevention Opportunities at Harvard University

Dr. Karina Garcia - Saenz, Officer Tijernia, and Hugo Garcia, Acting Chief of Police, presented information to the students at General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary. The presentation provided information about Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Threat Prevention. The Counseling department, along with district police, believes students must understand the ramifications and consequences associated with bullying and threats. Students were presented with information on bullying and the results of engaging in this behavior. Cardiovascular disease claims more lives across the globe every year than any other disease or condition, and many of those fatalities are credited to heart disease. Though the terms “cardiovascular disease” and “heart disease” are often used interchangeably, the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute notes that, while all heart diseases are cardiovascular diseases, not all cardiovascular diseases are heart diseases. This is an important distinction, especially as adults discuss heart and cardiovascular health with their physicians.

The NHLBI reports that more than one in 10 American adults have been diagnosed with heart disease, which underscores the serious threat posed by the various conditions that fall under the umbrella of the condition.

Though NHLBI data indicates

around 630,000 Americans die from heart diseases each year, many of those deaths are preventable. The same goes for Canada, where data from the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System indicates that every hour roughly 14 Canadian adults age 20 and over with diagnosed heart disease lose their lives.

Education is one of the ways in which deaths due to heart disease can be prevented. That’s especially true when individuals learn to recognize warning signs of the disease and take prompt action once such indicators appear. ·Chest pain: Discomfort between the neck and upper abdomen is characterized as chest pain, which does not necessarily indicate the presence of heart disease. However, the experts at Mount Sinai indicate that

chest pain is the most common symptom of poor blood flow to the heart or a heart attack.

Chest pain may occur because the heart isn’t getting enough oxygen or blood. Roma ISD Names Track In Honor of Escobar Brothers

The Roma ISD Gladiator Nation is proud to honor four brothers who paved the way for generations of Gladiators. The district named the newly resurfaced track at the Gladiator Arena Stadium in honor of Juan Manuel Escobar - Class of 1969, Filomeno Escobar Jr. Class of 1970, Jesus Benjamin Escobar - Class of 1973, and David Ray Escobar - Class of 1984. The brothers, who are proud sons of the City of Escobares, were some of the brightest stars of track and basketball in their time, setting multiple records, earnings trips to state championship athletic events, and being named all-region and allstate athletes.

From brother to brother, they passed down a hard work ethic and drive to excel in everything they set out to accomplish. Many of their records and accomplishments have been unmatched by any Gladiator in the decades since they were set.

“We were very poor, but that didn’t stop us. We could not afford bags for our athletic clothes, so our mother made us bags out of La Paloma Flour sacks. We showed up at meets with those flour sacks we used for a bag to store our gym clothes and people didn’t have

any idea where or what ‘Roma” was, but by the time we left the basketball floor or the track, they knew well where Roma, Texas was, and who the Escobar brothers were,” said eldest brother Juan M. Escobar. “We wanted to bring pride to our last name and to Roma.

That’s something we learned from our mother and father, to do everything to the best of our ability, with heart.”

The Escobar brothers were not only highly successful in athletics, but were all around students, showcasing academic ability and tremendous citizenship. And although they no longer reside in Starr County, the brothers are frequently seen at district events, cheering on students and providing words of encouragement to The Gladiator Nation.
