RGC Summer Track Athletes Compete at TAAF State Games of Texas in Corpus Christi Congratulations to the Summer Track kids from Rio Grande City and La Grulla who competed this entire summer in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Track Circuit.

Beginning on June 1st, over 100 athletes across Starr County began practicing and competing in track and field competitions against the Rio Grande Valley in meets in: Alamo, Pharr, McAllen, and Palmview. Rio excelled in many of these meets and then began competing at the Region 2 TAAF Track and Field Championship in Brownsville where the top six athletes in each respective event qualified to the State Games of Texas in Corpus Christi. This year Rio Grande City qualified 18 athletes to State.

Macario Villarreal Winner of National Director of Nurses Award

On June 25, 2022 Macario Villarreal from Rio Grande City attended the Annual NADONNA’S (National Association of Directors of Nurse and Administation) 36 Annual conference held in New Orleans. This conference handed out awards for different regions of the nation. These awards include an Overall national award, a Northwest, Central, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest Regions.

Macario Villarreal took the Southwest Region award.

Macario Villarreal has been serving as the Retama Manor in Rio Grande City as the Director of Nurses since 2004. He began Kudos to the Roma High School Art Program students who participated in the Congressional Art his career as a nurse when he Competition! Although they did not place, they were honored by Congressman Henry Cuellar’s Office obtained his LVN license in 1991 and then obtained his RN license for their dedication to their studies and fine art with a certificate of appreciation.

Rio Grande City Public Library’s StoryWalk™ is a fun way for families to combine health and literacy, encouraging both reading and outdoor exercise in an engaging way. Together with the A&M AgriLife Extension and the RGC Parks & Rec staff the StoryWalk™ Planning Committee

recently met to discuss permanent locations and StoryWalk™ roaming sets to be lent out to organizations within Starr County.

A StoryWalk™ consists of laminated pages from a children’s book installed on stands along an outdoor path. People walk along the story path and read the book as

they go.

In a collaborative effort with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Rio Grande City Public Library, Working on Working on Wellness Environments (WoW-E), Starr County, Healthy Nation in Parks: Creating a More Active America, Together and community leaders.

DPS offers tips to ensure children are properly restrained in a vehicle The best way to keep young children safe in your vehicle is to make sure they’re properly buckled up. Select a car seat that’s appropriate for your children’s age and size.

DPS offers the following tips to ensure children are properly restrained in a vehicle: •When selecting a car seat for your child, ensure it fits in your vehicle properly before purchasing it.

•Do not purchase a car seat if you are not aware of the history (i.e. yard sales, social media platforms, etc.).

•Model good behavior, make sure you are wearing your seat belt

so your children will know it’s the right thing to do.

•Infant car seats should always be rear-facing, and never used forward-facing.

•Be sure to check the maximum height and weight limits of the car seat, so children may be properly transitioned to the next one.

•For older children who are using booster seats with lap belts, ensure the belt is across the pelvic area and the shoulder belt strap is placed across the shoulder. It should never be placed along a child’s neck or abdominal area.

It should never be used under the arm or behind the back as it could cause severe injury in a crash.

•Texas law states all children younger than 8 years old, unless taller than 4’9”, are required to be in the appropriate car seat whenever they ride in a passenger vehicle.

The car seat MUST be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

•Children 8 years and older must be in a seat belt, if an adult hasn’t properly restrained a child, they can receive a ticket.
