Coach Abel Gonzalez played his stellar high school career at Rio Grande City High School from 1996-1998 where his talents led him to an athletic scholarship with the TAMUK Javelinas.

During his time at TAMUK from 1999-2002, he passed for

5,448 yards and threw for 47 touchdowns while compiling over 7,371 total yards.

A 2x All- Conference and All Regional quarterback, Coach Gonzalez was also selected as a finalist for the Harlan Hill Award for the best NCAA Il player in the nation.

Coach Gonzalez has been leading the Grulla Mighty Gators Football Team since 2010 in which they have amassed 11 playoff appearances, 1 district championship and 2 bi-district championships.

The induction will be held on Feb. 16, 2024 at the Memorial Student Union Building at TAMUK.

The Texas Guard presented a plaque of appreciation to Mr. Jesse Rodriguez, principal at Veterans Middle School for his hospitality in allowing various institutions to use the Veterans Middle School facility for Operation Border Health preparedness. The mission was to service all residents of Starr County who were in need of medical attention at no cost.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension associate professor and urban and municipal park specialist, research says lack of knowledge is one of the barriers people report for why they don’t visit their local parks and active places.

Roma, Rio Grande City, and the city of Eagle Pass are working with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Working on Wellness Environments (WOW-E) program to tie into the CDC’s Active People Healthy Nation (APHN) campaign. This campaign aims to get 27 million more Americans physically active by 2027. The goal of these local efforts is to make residents “in

the know” about parks and active places so more can visit and use them to be active, socialize, and enjoy time outdoors.

The campaign is in full swing; here’s what community members have said about it: “[The billboard] is going to make people think, ‘I want to go find [the parks!]”

“It’s a great source of information and inspiration because people will want to go and find [the parks] and use them.”

The RGC Fire Department & Emergency Management team attended a workshop hosted by Devin B. Keber with Flexgen on Wednesday, August 23rd, at the KB Museum. During this workshop the firefighters were educated on updated safety techniques when operating on a battery tower. Did you know?

High cholesterol levels are often associated with adulthood.

However, children also may experience high cholesterol, which can affect their longterm health. Pediatric high cholesterol, like its adult counterpart, refers to high levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol.

Elevated LDL can lead to fatty deposits that cause hardening of the arteries. Complications such as heart attack, stroke and early severe diseases are possible, according to Children’s Health.

A pediatrician can be consulted and a lipid profile prescribed to check cholesterol levels.
