On August 16, 2023, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $1,500,000 in federal funding for the Las Americas Roma Logistics & Industrial Park. $1,000,000 will be provided by Congressionally directed funding, and $500,000 will be provided by USDA Rural Business Development grant funding.

The funds will be used to develop the 328-acre Park’s infrastructure, including street development, drainage, lighting, water and wastewater systems, gas lines, electricity, and telecommunications. Upon completion, the Park will feature more than 25 warehouses and create employment opportunities for over 300 individuals.

DHR Health to Host its 17th Annual “Fishing for Hope” Tournament Benefiting the Uninsured through the Hope Family Health Center

Get ready to make a splash at the 17th Annual “Fishing for Hope” Tournament presented by DHR Health. The tournament will be held at Jim’s Pier on South Padre Island on August 26, 2023.

More than just a fishing tournament, the event is also an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our community, as all proceeds will benefit the Hope Family Health Center of McAllen.

The Hope Family Health Center is a non-profit family healthcare facility dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of uninsured families living the Rio Grande Valley.

The center provides various primary medical, counseling, integrated behavioral health, peer support, case management, and wellness programs. All services are provided free of charge through the generous efforts of the center’s volunteer physicians and medical staff.

To date, the yearly Fishing for Hope Tournament, coordinated

by DHR Health, has raised over $4 million for the center. “This year, more than ever, we need everyone’s help in reaching our fundraising goal,” said Marissa Castañeda, Senior Executive Vice President for DHR Health.

RGC Parks and Recreation Director Frank Eguia Recognized Athletes from the Summer Track and Field Program

The RGC Parks and Recreation Director Frank Eguia recognized 26 athletes from the Summer Track and Field Program who qualified for state competition of the Summer Games of Texas at the Regular Meeting of the City Commission at City Hall. Out of these 28 athletes, Joe D. Mijares and Gerardo Trevino, became State Champions. We are extremely proud of all of these young athletes and would like to thank them for being a part of our Rio Grande City Summer Track Program.

The Texas School Safety Center

is another useful tool for school security. It’s part of Texas State University and offers valuable resources on school safety for parents and members of the school community. It’s designed to be a central location for research, training and technical information for all school districts, charter schools and community colleges in the state. The Texas School Safety Center has staff experienced in school safety and can provide technical assistance or training, conduct program evaluations or offer resources to schools. Classes are also available online for the community.

Finally, in 2021, DPS implemented the Active Shooter Alert System. This is not schoolspecific but could be used in the event of a shooting at or near

a school. The alert system is designed to notify people in close proximity to an active shooter situation through cell phones, local broadcast media and Texas Department of Transportation Dynamic Message Signs (DMS).

These alerts are used to encourage people to avoid the area or shelterin-place, when a situation arises.

DPS will issue an Active Shooter Alert when an agency submits a request that meets the requirements. Those include an active shooter in the agency’s jurisdiction, determining that the alert would assist people near the active shooter’s location, verification of the active shooter situation through a preliminary investigation by the requesting agency and that the shooter’s last known location is identifiable.

DHR Health Urology Institute Welcomes Dr. Natalia RGC Hernandez—Specializing in Women’s Pelvic Health D H R Health is proud to welcome Natalia Hernandez, MD to their team of physicians at the DHR Health Urology Institute.

Specializing in women’s pelvic health, Dr. Hernandez is a seasoned urologist with more than a decade of experience. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will further elevate the level of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley.

Originally from Colombia, and fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Hernandez has an impressive academic background.

She earned her Doctor of Medicine from Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota. From there, she pursued further training at Harvard Medical School, where she attained a Certificate of Principals and Practice of Clinical Research from the Department of Continuing

Education, along with a Certificate in Applied Biostatistics from the Harvard Clinical and Transnational Science Center.

She then completed her preliminary year in General Surgery at the University of Texas at San Antonio. After that, she moved to Houston, where she completed her urology residency and fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstruction Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Hernandez is the first fellowship-trained woman in female reconstructive urology and voiding dysfunction and neurourology to serve the Rio Grande Valley.
