Roma ISD celebrated the opening of the new Roma High School Road to Recovery Center with a ribbon cutting celebration. The center, which is located at the old Y. B. Escobar Elementary School facility, opens for the first time on August 12, 2024. With a dedicated team of teachers and support professionals in place, it allows Roma High School students who are behind on credits a place to catch up on missing credits so they can eventually return to the high school to take classes with their grade level. During their time at the Roma High R2R Center, they will still be able to participate in their RHS extracurricular activities. The goal of the program is to allow students to graduate on time with their class. What an amazing concept ushered in by Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr. and the Roma ISD School Board!

The Rio Grande City Police Department, in partnership with Rio Grande City Crime Stoppers, recently hosted their annual “Shop with a Cop” event, providing school uniforms for families in the community. This year’s event was made possible through generous contributions from several sponsors and collaborative efforts with local organizations.

Held at Rio Grande City’s Walmart, the event allowed children to shop for school uniforms alongside police officers, fostering positive relationships

between law enforcement and the community. Families received much-needed support as the new school year approaches.

Police Chief Noe Castillo expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “We are incredibly thankful to all our sponsors and partners who made this event a success,” Castillo said. “Events like ‘Shop with a Cop’ highlight the importance of coming together as a community to support our children and families.”

Starr County staff and community members were among the volunteers at the Annual United Way of South Texas Back to School in Style Shopping Spree at Target in McAllen, Texas. 150 Students from Rio Grande Valley School Districts were selected by their school administrators to participate in the program. The students were given an allowance to shop for back to school attire and toiletries.

Volunteers were paired up with students to ensure that they selected appropriate school clothing, shoes, hygiene items and accessories.

Students were also provided with free backpacks full of school supplies. This project is made possible with the contributions from the members who participate with United Way of South Texas.

The GFWC Florence J. Scott Woman’s Club held its annual AIM Banquet, honoring RGCGISD and IDEA seniors who have Achieved Inspirational Merit. The event also celebrates GFWC Federation Day. President Maria Elia Ramos gave the welcome, and Vice

Roma ISD teachers and staff will all receive a 2.5% pay increase for the 2024-2025 School Year Roma ISD teachers and staff were excited to hear that they will all receive a 2.5% pay increase for the 2024-2025 School Year, which amounts to $1,550 for teachers. Auxiliary staff will receive a 2.5% raise off midpoint, but it will not be less than $500. It is anticipated the School Board will officially approve the raise at the August 21, 2024 Board Meeting, with raise checks being issued to employees on October 11, 2024.

“I am so fortunate to work with an amazing Finance Team, whose diligence to accrue a $40 Million Fund Balance allows us to provide this raise to our employees,” explained Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr., who

announced the raise at the district Convocation.

“When other districts are really struggling, we are able to weather this financial issue in the education sector and do a little more for our deserving employees. Now, I want everyone to go out and move mountains for our kids this year!”

Superintendent Gonzalez also explained that the district will maintain BlueCross/BlueShield Health Insurance coverage for employees at the same plans as

last year. However, employees may see a slight increase in their contributions for selected higher plans due to rising provider rates.

Roma ISD will also continue to offer a BlueCross/BlueShield HMO plan absolutely free to all employees. It’s great to be a Mighty Gladiator at Roma ISD!

DPS Announces Safety Tips

DPS reminds all drivers to follow these safety tips: • Stay out of blind spots.

Large trucks and buses have huge blind spots on all four sides.

• Pass safely. Make sure you can see the CMV driver in their side mirror. Signal clearly and safely pass the truck or bus. Don’t linger in the blind spot. Make sure

the truck or bus is visible in your rearview mirror before you pull in front.

• Don’t cut off large vehicles.

It takes a large truck traveling at highway speeds the length of two football fields to stop.

• Don’t tailgate. Tailgating a truck or bus puts you in a blind spot.

• Buckle up. Wearing a seatbelt can be the difference between life and death, make sure to buckle up.

• Put the phone down. Texting while driving in Texas is illegal.

All road users should share the road safely and have a heightened sense of awareness driving on our Texas highways. Together, we can make the state’s roads safer for all.

DPS Offers Heat Safety Tips As the heat continues across Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) urges everyone to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones from the dangers of extreme heat.

“We are in the heart of summer now here in Texas and everyone needs to familiarize themselves with safety measures to prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Implementing simple principles can be the difference between life or death for Texans.”

HEAT FAST FACTS: •Rapid Temperature Rise: On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise above 130 degrees in less than 30 minutes.

•Vulnerable Populations: Children and pets are particularly susceptible to heat-related illness, as their bodies heat up three to five times faster than the average adult.

•Heatstroke Symptoms: Warning signs for heatstroke include headache, fainting, lack of sweating, rapid pulse and confusion. In cases of heatstroke, immediate medical attention is crucial.

•Notice Pavement Temperature: On an 85-degree day, asphalt surfaces can reach up to 140 degrees. When surfaces

are just 125 degrees, children and pets can burn their feet within 60 seconds of contact.

SAFETY TIPS: • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day—hydration is key prior to going outdoors.

• Avoid Excessive Amounts of Alcohol and Caffeine: Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics and can lead to dehydration. It’s best to avoid too much of either one, especially when spending time in the heat.

• Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day – typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Never Leave Children or Pets Unattended: Even for a short period of time, leaving children or pets alone in a vehicle when it’s hot can be fatal. Always take them with you, no matter how short the errand.

• Act Quickly: If you see a child alone in a car, call 9-1-1 immediately. Quick intervention can save their life.

Prior to heading out, you need to make sure your vehicle is in good condition, well stocked and you’re prepared.

VEHICLE SAFETY TIPS: • Battery: Extreme heat can damage your vehicle’s battery,

making it harder to hold a charge and produce power.

• Engine: When the engine is too hot, fuel can’t circulate well, making it difficult to start.

• Tires: Temperature changes can affect tire pressure, which can lead to uneven wear and shorten the life of a tire. The heat can also cause the air inside your tires to expand, leading to blowouts.

• Wiper Blades: After a cold winter and spring rain, windshield wiper blades may need to be replaced. Rubber is vulnerable to extreme heat – so it’s a good idea to check for signs of wear and tear.

If they aren’t in top condition, change them out before you go.

• Air Conditioning: High temperatures can add extra stress to your vehicle’s air conditioning system, changing your air filter and checking your refrigerant can help ensure the air conditioner makes it through.

• Emergency Kit: Breakdowns happen, so it’s best to be prepared.

Having an emergency kit in your car can help. The number one item is a cell phone battery charger to allow you to call for help. Other top items include flashlight, jumper cables, first aid kit, water and non-perishable food.

Registration Open for Rio Grande City Parks & Recreation Flag and Tackle Football Program

The Rio Grande City Parks & Recreation Department has opened registration for its Flag and Tackle Football program. The program is available for children in 2nd through 6th grade, with separate divisions based on grade level.

To register, participants must provide a birth certificate and a physical examination report.

The registration fees are $40 for 2nd and 3rd graders and $60 for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. These fees cover the cost of essential equipment, including shoulder pads and helmets.

The Parks & Recreation Department is also seeking volunteer coaches to help guide and mentor the young athletes. Individuals interested in volunteering or who have questions about the program are

encouraged to contact the Parks & Recreation office at (956) 4888728.

“This program is a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn teamwork, discipline, and the fundamentals of football in a fun and supportive environment,” said Rio Grande City Parks and Rec. director Frank Eguia. “We are excited to get started and appreciate the community’s involvement, especially our volunteer coaches who make this program possible.”

The program aims to foster a love for the sport while ensuring the safety and development of all participants.

By Mike Hachtman In this election year, we’ll hear much about the importance of voting, but there are additional responsibilities that strengthen our democracy and protect our rights as citizens.

It’s also critically important to answer the call for jury service.

Every citizen can contribute to fairness and balance in the civil justice system by serving on a jury when called. A robust jury system is essential to protecting our rights as Americans and ensuring all defendants are treated fairly in the courtroom.

Yet, in recent years, many people in Texas and around the country have avoided jury service. National research and previous studies have estimated that fewer than half of those called to serve in some areas of our state and nationally ignore their summons.

Such statistics are abysmal and don’t bode well for our civil or criminal courts. Why aren’t people answering the call?

The Pew Research Center found that only half of those ages 18 to 29 say jury service is part of being a good citizen, compared to 70 percent or higher in older age groups.

It’s difficult for defendants to receive a trial by a jury of their peers when their peers don’t

show up. Courts depend upon citizens to serve as jurors, and all citizens should be encouraged to respond when summoned for jury service.

We all know time is money.

And over the past decade, more counties have been doing their part to make jury service as painless as possible, offering online scheduling that saves both jurors and courts time and money.

More recently, a new law approaching its one-year anniversary increased juror pay from $6 to $20 for the first day of service and $40 to $58 per day for those impaneled to serve for a trial. Thanks to state lawmakers who passed HB 3474 in the last legislative session, Texas now ranks among the states with the highest pay for jury service.

Serving on a jury is fundamental to our democracy, and jurors who respond when called will receive a pay increase for the first time in nearly 20 years. Texas has removed one more obstacle or excuse not to serve when summoned by increasing juror pay.

The U.S. and Texas constitutions guarantee the right to a trial by jury. A trial by a jury of your peers is a fundamental safeguard of each American’s civil liberties and an important component of civic engagement.

Remember, it’s important not only to vote but also to serve on a jury. When summoned, answer the call.

The UTRGV School of Nursing students hosted a Healthy Eating Choices Workshop for Kids at the Rio Grande City Public Library on Thursday, July 11, 2024. These students handed out free books and went over proper eating habits, oral care, and hand washing techniques. The goal of this workshop is to promote healthy eating and care habits for a healthier life. On behalf of the City of RGC we would like to thank the UTRGV School of Nursing for hosting this informative presentation for the youth of our community.

THE COUNTY OF STARR SHERIFF’S OFFICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC AUCTION Notice is hereby given, pursuant to Chapter 263.153 of the Texas Local Government Code & Chapter 59 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Transportation Code 683, Subsection B, 683.012, of the Texas Department of Transportation that the County of Starr Sheriff’s Office, Rio Grande City, Texas will hold a public auction on Saturday, August 24th , 2024, at 10:00 a.m. for General Surplus, Equipment and Vehicles which have been forfeited to the State of Texas under the provisions of Chapter 59 Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

Location: 2101 I-69C, Edinburg, TX 78542. Registration to bid will be from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and will require a picture identification. Examples of items to be auctioned are cars, trucks, heavy equipment, personal computers, electronics, office furniture, surplus, etc. All items will be sold “As Is - Where Is” to the highest bidder. Onsite Buyer’s Premium 12%, Internet Buyer’s Premium 14%. All sales are final and must be paid on the same day with cash, major credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Discover, American Express), Debit & Credit with a 3.99% processing fee.
