Roma High JROTC Cadets Enjoy Another Successful Raider Competition By: Roma High School’s JROTC Program Staff The more than 270 Junior Army ROTC cadets from 16 high schools from South Texas pushed themselves to the limit — both individually and as a team — to complete a series of exercises that challenged them physically and mentally on April 2, 2022 at the Spring Gladiator Raider

Spartan Competition at La Copa Ranch.

The cadets from around South Texas started their competition at their allotted time with a 1K Patient Litter Team Run, Construct a One Rope Bridge, Jeep Pull, Obstacle Course, 1.5K Run, and the Zodiac boat pond crossing. All of the events are non-stop and the time does not stop until all events are competed.

As they got into the home stretch of the run after dismounting the Zodiac, some cadets finished without a word while others loudly grunted as they sprinted across the finish line.

“Looking good, guys; looking great!” shouted one of the Cadre.

“Let’s go, finish strong!” another instructor shouted as the cadets finished the run.

CDT Major Jahaziel Rios, Roma Boys Team Captain, said “I think we did pretty well, considering we have a bunch of lower classmen, we placed 3rd out of nine teams.”

“Aside from being physically demanding, it also takes a lot of dedication and a lot of teamwork,” Roma Hing JROTC COED Team Captain CDT LTC Angela Gonzalez said of the challenge.

Ten-member teams competed

in the Raider Challenge. At the end of the day, the highest scoring teams in each category were given a trophy. Trophies also were given out to the top five overall scoring teams. Throughout the day, Cadets and the Alumni from JROTC program helped make sure the event ran smoothly.

The new addition to the competition of the Zodiac Boat, on loaned from the City of Roma Police Department, was the high point of most of the competitors.

The Zodiac is a special operations boat and the cadets were anticipating the event.

“Paddling the boat thru the pond gave it a real feel of a military type operation,” stated CDT 1LT Vanessa Solis.

LTC Luis Barrera, Roma HS JROTC Senior Army Instructor and meet director stated, “One of the things that I think is kind of missing in some of our young folks, not really our Raiders, is the resilience or grit to be able to attack an obstacle and overcome it. We’re teaching them here how to run up against something really, really hard and overcome it.”

Barrera said he hopes cadets also walk away from the challenge with a better appreciation for team work. The next Roma Gladiator Raider event will be in October 2022.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Tips for Grilling Safely This month, go outdoors!

Breathe fresh air and enjoy what nature has to offer with flavors from the grill.

Grilling offers the opportunity to eat a varied selection of proteins such as beef, chicken, wild game, and seafood. Maybe you fancy grilled fruits and vegetables? You can experiment with rubs, herbs, or marinades. Smoked or not? Direct or indirect heat? Perhaps, a grilled salad? Tofu anyone? The options are endless. One tool all grillers should have in their toolbox is a thermometer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “foods should be cooked hot enough to kill harmful germs and be maintained at 140°F until grilled food is served”.

Recommended internal temperatures are: •Beef, pork, lamb, veal-- 145°F •Fish -- 145°F •Hamburgers, Ground Beef -160°F •Poultry, Hot Dogs-- 165°F Other tips for grilling safely are to wash your hands before and after handling raw meat, keep raw meats, poultry, and seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods, refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, and discarding leftovers after 4 days.

Grilling food is a healthier option than frying as fat contained in or on the food drips out; vitamins and minerals are preserved, and calories are lowered. According to Extension Program Specialist Julie Tijerina, “other health benefits of grilling include the promotion of family bonding, passing of traditions, creating memories, and overall positive well-being.”

•Grilling brings out smiles, cheerfulness, stress-relief, and uplifted moods.

•Grilling provides entertainment, time to visit with loved ones, and time to make memories.

Pedestrian Deaths in Texas Increase 15% in 2021 TxDOT urges drivers to look out for pedestrians who account for 1 in 5 traffic fatalities in the Lone Star State As Texans enjoy summer activities outdoors, TxDOT’s “Be

Safe. Drive Smart” campaign urges drivers and pedestrians to watch out for each other as pedestrian deaths continue to rise.

In 2021, 5,366 traffic crashes involving pedestrians occurred in

Texas, and as a result 841 people were killed, a 15% increase in pedestrian fatalities over the previous year. Another 1,470 people were seriously injured.

“Only 1% of traffic crashes

in Texas involve pedestrians, yet pedestrians account for 19% of all roadway deaths,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “That’s because pedestrians lack the protective

equipment—airbags, seat belts and bumpers—common to vehicles. To keep our most vulnerable road users safe, we urge motorists to always be on the lookout for people walking.

Pedestrians also have the responsibility to be aware of their surroundings and follow the rules of the road.”

Crash reports from law enforcement indicate the leading factors of pedestrianrelated traffic crashes include 1) pedestrians failing to yield the right of way to vehicles, 2) driver inattention, 3) motorists failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians, 4) failure to control speed, and 5) drivers and/ or pedestrians being under the influence of alcohol.

The campaign includes TV, radio, billboards and digital advertising. In addition, “walking billboards” will deliver safety messages in the state’s major metro areas with a high volume of pedestrian traffic where it’s easy for drivers and people on foot to see them.

TxDOT offers these safety reminders to prevent a deadly encounter: For drivers: •Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

•When turning, yield the right

of way to pedestrians.

•Be cautious when passing stopped buses or other vehicles.

•Pay attention and put your phone away, so you’re always prepared if pedestrians enter your path.

•Follow the posted speed limit and drive to conditions.

For people walking: •Cross the street only at intersections and crosswalks.

Look left, right, then left again before crossing.

•Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don’t assume drivers see you.

•Follow all traffic and crosswalk signals.

•Use the sidewalk. If there isn’t one, walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

•When walking, put away electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off the road.

•Wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.

US National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley Texas at Falcon State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife On a brutally hot day (August 2) at Falcon Dam and Falcon State Park, meteorologists Barry Goldsmith and Jeremy Katz surveyed the extent of the low water levels on Falcon International Reservoir.

During our several hour “tour”, the Texas share of the reservoir fell below 10 percent of the conservation pool - levels not seen since the period from 1996-2002 - and potentially on their way to record lows later this month with little to no rain in the forecast for the tributaries that feed both Amistad and Falcon Reservoirs.

In addition to the low levels, grasses were completely brown in most of Starr and southern Zapata County, indicating the worsening drought.

In these photos: An “island” revealed just north of the dam; no water even trickling out of the dam’s gates (south side) because the levels were at least 10 feet *below* the level needed to flow from the entry point on the north side (last photo); the extent of receded water from a boat ramp and the shoreline in Falcon State Park, just north of the dam.
