State Champions World Bound General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary Odyssey Of The Mind Team competed at the OM State Competition in Dallas, TX and received 1st place, competing against several top teams in the state.

GRSE OM team did exceptionally well and are now advancing to World Finals in Lansing, Michigan.

Team members include: Isabella Guerra, Ryder Santa Maria, Gilbert Alaniz Jr., Sophia Carmona, Kassidy Garcia, Mariely López, and Hector Rodriguez.

After not competing in nearly 15 years, the GRSE team not only brought OM back, but went to state and dominated. Judges were blown away with their performance!!

Rio Grande City Main Street welcomes new coordinator

Yandery De La Cruz has been named Rio Grande City’s new Main Coordinator. Ms, De La Cruz, a Mission native, has made Rio Grande City her home for the past 17 years. She previously worked at the Student Assessment department at Rio Grande City Grulla ISD. “I am looking forward to working with the advisory board members, partners, business owners and our community leaders in growing and enriching our main street district,” Ms. De La Cruz said.

The goal of the Rio Grande City Main Street Program focuses on revitalization of the downtown historic district by implementing the Four Point® approach set by the National Main Street Center.

These points include building partnerships within the community, promoting downtown through Main Street events, designing and maintaining historical elements unique to Rio grade City and identifying historical value and fostering economic development.

Immaculate Conception School Hosted Relocation of the Flag Ceremony

by Molleigh Flores Immaculate Conception School hosted a relocation of the flag ceremony on March 1st, 2023.

The Immaculate Conception School flagpole was relocated to the front of the school by the school sign, easily locatable to the public.

City officials and members of The Starr County courthouse joined ICS in celebrating this monumental moment for our school. Joining together parents, students, faculty, and staff participated in showing love, and respect to our USA and Texas state flag.

ICS wants to thank everyone involved in the relocation of the flagpole and for their dedicated time and effort: A special thank you to Vietnam veteran Noe Gonzalez and his son Fabian Gonzalez who helped in relocating the flag and donating the eagle placed on top

of the flagpole. Thank you to Sgt. Marco Pena and the JROTC of Rio Grande City Highs chool for their participation and help as well as Deacon RC for making this moment in ICS history happen.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for NEW City Attention Rattler Nation!! Introducing your Congratulations Beverley Gonzalez 1st of Rio Grande City Public Safety Building Regional Qualifiers for Poetry and Prose!! Place and Travis Rodriguez 3rd Place!!

The City of Rio Grande City will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony for their brand new Public Safety Building on Friday, April 14, 2023 starting at 9:30am.

This ceremony will take place at 502 N. 755 Road behind the new Tractor Supply Co. Building.

This will be the first Public Safety Building in Rio Grande City housing the Rio Grande City Police Department, the Rio Grande City Fire Department, as well as an Emergency Shelter

to use during extreme weather occurrences.

U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar was a major factor in helping us obtain a $2.5 million grant from the USDA to spearhead this project, and he will be in attendance to speak during the ceremony.

Everyone at the City of Rio Grande City is very excited for this project to begin, and we hope to be able to spread the good news to as many people as possible.

These students will now travel to San Antonio, Texas later this month to compete for a chance at State!

Roma High Gear Up Students Earn R. T. Barrera Students Learn About Ecosystems Certifications at Region One Workshop Ms. Adriana Canales’ 1st Grade class from R. T. Barrera Elementary School read the story “Grand Canyon” and learned about how there can be different ecosystems in one place where different plants and animals coexist.

They learned that the Grand Canyon goes back 100 million years ago and can find fossils if they are lucky to spot one.

They got the chance to be explorers and observe real fossils of different plants and animals with hand lenses that Ms. Canales and her father Adrian Canales have collected from south Texas and other parts of the United States.

Thanks Ms. Canales for putting 46 Roma High School Gear Up Program students attended an all day workshop at Region One Service Center to earn certificates in Warehouse Safety, First Aid & CPR, Customer Service, Disability Awareness, together a great lesson that brings learning to life! and Basic Life Support. Roma High School is very proud of the students’ participation!

Starr county Veterans Workshop - Held at the Olde Towne public house downtown historic Rio Grande City.

Colonel Retired Ross Barrera led the effort to bring Mr. Luis Mendoza from Zapata County Veterans Service Office to assist our local veterans in obtaining information and to apply for state and federal assistance in support

Starr County Veterans Workshop Successful of our veterans. Colonel Barrera provide the Olde Towne Public House located in the historic downtown at no cost to the workshop.

Attending the workshop was Mrs. Elia Ramos and Lydia Garza from the Rio Grande City Florence J. Scott Women’s Club, who assisted in serving lunch to the veterans and their spouses/

family member. Dina Porras was instrumental in contacting veterans to attend the event.

Mr Ediel Barrera from Regina Construction homes, donated the lunch and drinks.

Also present at the workshop were Mr Robert Bazan from Congressman Cuellar’s Office and Karina Garza from State Representative Ryan Guillen’s

Office for providing valuable veteran aid information.

Mr Teo Barrera and Mr Beto Avila from Caridad Health Care Inc. Roma Tx also attended the event and provide a briefing on VA services available locally.

Further, Ms. Cynthia Barrera Insurance Medicaid Medicare and income tax services, for you information brief.

Overall, we had over 30 folks plus attending the event. We plan to do this again soon.

R. T. Barrera Elementary School Students Enjoy Art Lesson Thank you to Mrs. Carmen Reyes from R. T. Barrera Elementary School for setting up a wonderful enrichment activity for the Eagles!

The students enjoyed an art lesson with Ms. Raquel from Hinovations Art Gallery.

They learned about French Impressionist painter Claude Monet who enjoyed a long career painting the outdoors.

The students engaged in their own art project following the art history lesson. Great job Eagles!

How to protect long-term cognitive health Cognitive health is not something to take for granted.

Although a certain level of memory loss can be expected as people age, when the ability to clearly think, learn and remember is compromised, those changes can affect an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and should serve as a cause for concern.

Brain health should be a priority for everyone. The National Institute on Aging says brain health is an umbrella term that encompasses a host of factors, including: ·Cognitive health, which is how well you think, learn and remember ·Motor function, or how you make and control movements ·Tactile function, which is how you feel sensations; and ·Emotional function, or how emotions are interpreted and responded to.

Individuals can safeguard brain health - particularly cognitive health - by taking these steps.

Be more health-conscious Working with doctors, individuals can put their health first. This includes getting routine screenings, managing chronic health problems, limiting or avoiding alcohol and nicotine

products, and getting the recommended amount of sleep each night.

Manage high blood pressure - All chronic conditions cause long-term repercussions, but the NIA indicates that observational studies show having high blood pressure in mid-life increases the risk of cognitive decline later in life. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk for mild cognitive impairment and possibly dementia.

Challenge your brain - Harvard Medical School says nurturing social contacts, engaging in stimulating mental activities like reading and doing puzzles, seeing new places, and learning new things can help keep the brain in top form.

Manage stress - Stress can take its toll on the body, and there is reason to believe that it may adversely affect cognitive health as well. Make every stride to reduce stress, whether that involves taking vacations,

meditating, laughing with friends and family, or engaging in relaxing activities that relieve stress.

Get enough vitamin D Vitamin D is linked to a host health benefits, including its potential to promote a healthy brain. Individuals can get more time outdoors to get vitamin D naturally from the sun and eat foods rich in vitamin D. If doctors find that vitamin D levels are exceptionally low, supplementation can help.

Pay attention to hearing loss - Certain hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, says Healthline. Researchers in Italy concluded that people with central hearing loss had a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment than those with no hearing loss or peripheral hearing loss.

Individuals with central hearing loss are urged to speak to their physicians to determine if they can take preventive action to stave off further decline.

Roma ISD Special Education Girl Scouts of Rio-Roma Service Unit helps Program Honors Art Contest Winners clean up Rio Grande City Main Street The Roma ISD Special Education Program is excited to share the winners of their Child Find/Child Serve art contest which was open to all K-12th grade Roma ISD students. Many entries were received and the judges had the difficult task of narrowing it down to the top three.
