The Roma Middle School Symphonic Winds Band as been invited to perform at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. The Roma Middle School Symphonic Winds was selected as one of four performing middle school bands in the world to perform. These students placed in the top rankings among the national and international middle school contenders, giving them the opportunity to perform a featured concert for thousands of international artists and music educators, to interact with contemporary composers, and to see live performances of some of the best musicians in the world. This is the first time that a concert band from the Rio Grande Valley has been invited to perform at the Midwest Clinic since Brownsville High School in 1952. Also, this is the first middle school band from South Texas to ever be selected! The Roma Middle School Symphonic Winds Band will present their concert on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois. South Texas College will host a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for its $24M Starr County Campus expansion, Thursday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m.

The new construction at the campus located at FM 3167, will include an expanded Student Services Activities building, a new library, and a brand-new Health Professions Science Center. The current library will be renovated into a cultural arts center.

“South Texas College serves as a catalyst for regional economic prosperity and social mobility for Valley families, and education is key to the prosperity of a community,” said Dr. Shirley A. Reed, President of South Texas College. “The construction of new buildings, and the expansion of others at our Starr County Campus

reflects the commitment of South Texas College to helping communities grow and prosper in this region among many others.”

Funding for the project will come from the $159 million bond election passed by voters back in 2013. This is the second in a series of groundbreakings planned at STC’s five campuses in Hidalgo and Starr counties. The expansions at each campus will enable the college to accommodate its growing student enrollment, expected to reach 42,000 by the year 2020.

South Texas College held its last groundbreaking for the expansion of the Ramiro A. Casso health science center in August.

Congratulations to the VMS Boys and Girls Cross Country Team for their outstanding performance at the District 31 5-A Middle School Cross Country Meet held at Ramiro Barrera Middle School on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Veterans Middle School earned the 1st Place Trophy in 3 of the 4 Divisions. The 7th Grade Girls, the 8th Grade Girls, and the 8th Grade Boys all won their respective divisions. Additionally, the 7th Grade Boys finished in 2nd Place in their division, a mere ONE point behind the first place team!

The Mighty Rattler Marching Band named their 2016-2017 Band Beau and Sweetheart on November 4, 2016 at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium. The Band Beau is Rogelio Salinas and the Sweetheart is Jarely Gomez.

RIO GRANDE CITY CELEBRATES THE REASON FOR THE SEASON DURING 13TH ANNUAL H-E-B FEAST OF SHARING EVENT

Annual Dinner Brings Rio Grande City Community Together on Thursday, December 1 at Fort Ringgold Elementary The holidays are a special time for H-E-B. It’s a time to give thanks to its customers, and a time to bring family, friends and neighbors together for a beloved annual tradition – the H-E-B Feast of Sharing. This year’s event took place on Thursday, December 1, from 6 -9 p.m., at Fort Ringgold Elementary located at 1 Fort Ringgold St. “Giving back to the community is what H-E-B was founded on more than 110 years ago, and it’s really at the heart of who we are as a company,” said Linda Tovar, H-E-B Director of Public Affairs, Border Region. “The Feast of Sharing gives us a wonderful opportunity to bring the Rio Grande City community together to break bread, enjoy one another’s company, and get the holiday season off to a beautiful start here in South Texas.”

During the free community event, hundreds of volunteers served a feast to more than 2,500 residents. The menu included glazed ham with gravy, mashed potatoes, a vegetable medley and dessert.

Preparing for a massive, large-scale feast of this size is no easy feat. It takes an army of volunteers to prepare 750 pounds of glazed ham, 35 gallons of gravy, 95 gallons of mashed potatoes, 55 gallons of vegetable medley, 2,500 slices of apple pie and 2,500 rolls.

The H-E-B Feast of Sharing dinners were founded in 1989 and are a facet of H-E-B’s Food Bank Assistance Program. The program works year-round to prevent hunger in Texas and Mexico.

Today, 31 dinners are held across Texas and in Mexico, with more than 250,000 meals served to communities.

On Thursday, November 10, 2016, Alex Sarabia, Psychology Instructor at South Texas College and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), served as Guest Speaker at STC Dream Catcher’s (formerly known as Puente Program) Noche de Familia at STC Grulla Gators Freshmen Team and the Grulla Gator Junior Varsity Team are District Champions! The Pecan Campus Cooper Center. The Pecan Campus students (members Gator Freshmen beat La Feria with a score of 48–6 for the District Title. The Gator JV beat La Feria as of Dream Catchers) and their well with a score of 22–14 for the District Title. parents attended this family night with the theme of “Loteria,” and tacos were served for dinner.

After the welcome and overview of the Dream Catchers Program by the Pecan Campus coordinator and instructors (Angelica Cerda, Dr. Juan Ramirez, Dr. Sandra Ledezma, Juan Ochoa, Santa Pena), Mr. Alex Sarabia was introduced to deliver his 30 minute motivational / inspirational talk to the students and parents (in both English and Spanish).

Mr. Sarabia elaborated on the importance of using college resources (tutoring advising, counseling, applying for scholarships, attending workshops), the benefits of getting involved in student organizations and community service, and provided other practical advice: time and stress management, the importance of believing in yourself, optimism, learning from failure, and gratitude.

He showed two video clips along with his talk to help get his point across, “Famous Failures” and “No Arms, No Legs, No Worries.” Mr. Sarabia was given a Certificate of Appreciation following his talk.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Judith A. Canales, announced that the deadline to submit ballots for the 2016 County Committee Elections has been extended to ensure farmers and ranchers have sufficient time to vote. Eligible voters now have until Dec. 13, 2016 to return ballots to their local FSA offices. Producers who have not received their ballot should pick one up at their local FSA office.

“We’re extending the voting deadline to Dec. 13 to give farmers and ranchers a few additional days to get their ballots in,” said Canales.

“I urge all eligible producers, especially minorities and women, to get involved and make a real difference in their communities by voting in this year’s elections. This is your opportunity to have a say in how federal programs are delivered in your county.”

FSA has modified the ballot, making it easily identifiable and less likely to be overlooked.

Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 13, 2016. Newly elected committee members will take office Jan. 1, 2017.

Nearly 7,700 FSA County Committee members serve FSA

offices nationwide. Each committee has three to 11 elected members who serve three-year terms of office. One-third of County Committee seats are up for election each year. County Committee members apply their knowledge and judgment to help FSA make important decisions on its commodity support, conservation, indemnity, disaster and emergency programs.

Producers must participate or cooperate in an FSA program to be eligible to vote in the County Committee election.

Approximately 1.5 million producers are currently eligible to vote. Farmers and ranchers who supervise and conduct the farming operations of an entire farm, but are not of legal voting age, also may be eligible to vote.

It’s time to look at your health care coverage for 2017

By Bob Moos/Southwest public affairs officer/U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Now’s the time to check your health care coverage for 2017 or sign up for the first time. Open enrollment through the Health Insurance Marketplace began on Nov. 1 and runs until Jan. 31.

Here are six key facts to know about this year’s enrollment season.

• Your actual premium costs probably aren’t as high as you’ve heard. More than seven in 10 Texans with coverage through the marketplace will be able to find a health plan for less than $75 per month, thanks to financial assistance.

If your income falls below 400 percent of the federal poverty level – that’s $48,000 for one person or $97,000 for a family of four – you’ll qualify for federal tax credits that will help make your coverage affordable. About eight in 10 marketplace consumers in Texas are eligible. Because the tax credits increase dollar for dollar with the cost of a benchmark health plan, most consumers are protected from rate increases.

Also, if you’re buying an individual health plan but not through the marketplace, you’d be wise to visit healthcare.gov and recheck your eligibility for the tax credits. An estimated 252,000 Texans who purchased coverage outside the marketplace and paid full price for it last year have incomes low enough to qualify for assistance.

• All consumers still have choices. About eight in 10 marketplace customers will be able to choose from competing insurers for 2017. But even consumers served by a single insurer will select from a range of plans.

Texans can choose from an average of 26 health plans, though the exact number will vary from county to county. Rural areas are likely to have fewer. You can view all of the plans for sale in your area at healthcare.gov.

If you haven’t purchased a health plan through the marketplace before, you should know that all plans cover a comprehensive set of benefits, including doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care, pregnancy and prescription drugs. The plans must treat you fairly. Insurers can’t deny you coverage because you have a medical issue, such as cancer or diabetes. Nor can they charge you more than they would someone who’s in good health.

• It pays to shop and check out your options. If your health plan from this past year is continuing into 2017, you may be automatically re-enrolled. But you’ll still want to review it to make sure it meets your needs.

Every year, insurers adjust premiums, out-of-pocket costs and benefits. You should have received a letter from your insurance company explaining the changes for 2017.

Even if you’re satisfied with your current coverage, it’ll be smart to log into your marketplace account at healthcare.gov and update your information on household income and family size.

Updating your personal information is important, because you may be eligible for lower costs than last year.

• Comparing plans at healthcare.gov is easier than ever. The marketplace simplifies your shopping for coverage by letting you make convenient comparisons of health plans.

The process is faster and more streamlined this year. You can even shop and enroll from a smartphone or tablet.

Healthcare.gov helps you put together the full picture of your health care costs, including premiums, deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. An “out-of-pocket calculator” will give you an estimate of your total yearly costs for each health plan, HEALTH CARE, page 10

North Grammar Elementary Cafeteria Hosted Healthy Snack Tasting North Grammar Elementary Cafeteria Staff, Noelia Lopez, and Noehmi Salinas, assisted by Yolanda Gracia from the RGCCISD Child Nutrition Department hosted a “healthy snack tasting” at the school cafeteria. The North Grammar Elementary Student Council officers and representatives took part in the enlightening and yummy event. The ladies prepared a simple, tasty, and healthy snack made with protein packed chickpeas and offered each student a sampling. Most of the 28 members agreed that “hummus” was a snack worth a second helping. Ringgold Middle School Hosted their 4th Annual Leadership Conference

Ringgold Middle School hosted their 4th Annual Leadership Conference on Saturday, October 15, 2016. About 200 students from Rio Grande City, La Grulla, and Roma came together to learn about different ways to become great leaders in our communities, making friends and having fun. Local high school students, private agencies and organizations presented very engaging and dynamic sessions.

RGCCISD Superintendent,

Mr. Alfredo Garcia, was the keynote speaker during the general session and kicked off the conference by talking about leadership and motivating the students to become great leaders.

Roma ISD Food Service Department Staff Honored For Service During National School Lunch Week

The Roma ISD Food Service Department Staff was honored by the Roma ISD School Board at the district’s October School Board Meeting for going above and beyond during National School Lunch Week and making the events tremendous for all students and families!

“They really did a wonderful job with this event and it was amazing to see so many parents excited to come to school and

share a meal with their children,” express School Board President Leticia Garza-Galvan. “Any time we can bring families together at our campuses it is a blessing for us all. This would never have been possible if these women and men hadn’t stepped up and said they were ready and willing.

Roque Guerra, Jr. Elementary welcomed Adolfo Pena, Asst.

Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction as he stopped by to observe the schools progress in consistently “Making the Connection

by Building a Strong Foundation.” Principal, Monique Villarreal presented hands-on learning and student collections alongside teacher and student feedback. Students and teachers were excited to share their thoughts of incorporated lessons that are supported by PLC’s implementation. Differentiated lessons and activities such as anchor charts, academic manuscripts, student journals, display of vocabulary cards in school hallways and the implemented dual language program was successfully observed by Mr. Pena.

Alto Bonito Elementary hosted a Migrant meeting for their parents on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Dr. Pablo Martinez, and Mr. Rene Grulla Elementary students had the opportunity to browse the annual Pena welcomed and addressed the parents. They were given important Book Fair that started on October 3, 2016. Hieroglyphic moths are colorful A few days ago, the owner of the ranch where I live called me over to see a caterpillar.

He wanted to know which species it was. I wasn’t surprised by the request because this is early Fall when caterpillars are abundant.

The caterpillar was feeding on one of his potted pyramid bushes.

It was quite distinctive but one I hadn’t seen before so I’d need to do some research.

To identify a plant or animal you look for field marks, that is, identifying features. With caterpillars there are four things to look for: (1) the basic body color, this one was white, (2) the main body pattern, this one was banded with narrow black lines, (3) the density of any hairs or

fluff, this one was smooth, and (4) any special physical features like horns and spines, this one was without any.

That description fit three species and by adding the observation that the head was a bright red-orange I arrived at hieroglyphic moth.

Hieroglyphics have a wide distribution in North and South America. In the U. S. they’re found in our southeastern states and as fear west as Texas. Over the years I’ve observed several near a nightlight by our ranch gate.

These moths have linear antennae, are 1 1/2 to 2 inches

long and have colorful forewings.

The forewings are light yelloworange with metallic blue-black lines and three rows of metallic dots near the edges. Just behind the head are three metallic black marks. The legs are black.

When the larvae go into the pupal stage, they cover themselves in a silken cocoon, as is usual with moths. Hieroglyphic moths attach their rather rounded cocoons onto stems or branches of bushes. In the Spring, they emerge as adult moths.

These moths aren’t often seen and are quite attractive. I remind you that without caterpillars eating the leaves of our plants, we can’t have any of the colorful butterflies and moths we enjoy seeing.
