Grulla High School Mariachi Grulla de Plata competed in the 22nd Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza on December 2nd and 3rd 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. Grulla High School Mariachi Grulla de Plata brought home 3rd Place in the High School Category! The RGCCISD School Board of Trustees and Administration would like to congratulate all students who proudly represented our school distinct, as well as their directors and parents for their guidance and support.

Home Assistance and Rehabilitation Projects Mr. Rudy Montalvo- County of Starr Federal Programs Director and his staff have been working diligently on federal applications for grants to help build and rehabilitate homes in Starr County. The county has received close to 400 thousand in grant monies which will be utilized for the construction and rehabilitation of five (5) homes for families county wide. The families that have been awarded these grants go through a screening process as per grant guidelines in order to determine eligibility. County of Starr Federal Programs Director Mr. Rudy Montalvo and Mr. Emmanuel Martinez-Starr County Federal Programs Project Manager met with Mr. Eloy Amador-HOME Program Housing Inspector who will conduct the home inspections to outline the grant requirements and guidelines to ensure that the homes are built up to code specifications. Mr. Amador who holds a Construction Certification has extensive experience in commercial and residential building and will work closely with the architect, construction managers and Starr County Federal Programs Staff to ensure that all work is done in a timely manner and meets all requirements. (County of Starr Public Relations Office).

Last week, L&F Distributors donated $500 to the Rio Grande City Crime Stoppers-Toys for Rio Kids. The money was used to purchase toys which were added to a pool of contributions which resulted in hundreds of toys being distributed to local children on Monday morning, December 19.

Toys for Rio Kids has been distributing toys to Rio Grande City children for the past several years with the help of many generous businesses, individuals and organizations. “Donations like these from L&F make it possible for us to continue this tradition and is greatly appreciated,” stated Rio Grande City Crime Stoppers spokesperson, Ana Ramirez.

F.J. Scott Elementary School Named Ac2E Elementary Student is Selected Winner National Title I Distinguished School of Scholastic Reading Clubs Drawing Contest

Roma ISD is pleased to announce that F.J. Scott Elementary has been selected for the Distinguished Performance Award by the National Association of State Title I Directors (NASTID)! The award will officially be bestowed at the National Title I Conference in February 2017 in Long Beach, California.

To be eligible for the award, a school must have met the following very rigorous criteria including be a Title I, Part A campus in School Year 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016; have 85 percent or more low income students in 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 20152016; “Met Standard” in state accountability system ratings in

2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 20152016; met system safeguards from 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016; campus is “High Performance Reward” in 20132014, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016; and have the highest three-year passing rate for all students in reading and math.

Ac2E Elementary would like to congratulate 4th grader, Moniq Lopez, for being named a winner in Scholastic Reading Clubs’ “Picture a President” Drawing Contest. Over 4,000 entries from throughout the country were submitted for this contest, and her portrait of President John Quincy Adams was one of only 40 selected winners.

As a winner, Moniq will receive two U.S. History Libraries, one for her and one for her classroom. She will also receive a collection of art supplies. Moniq’s art will be displayed as a part of Scholastic’s Gallery of Winners online in the coming weeks.

Thank you to Moniq’s teacher, Ms. Deborah Delano, who encouraged her students to participate in the contest and submitted all entries to the Scholastic Reading Clubs. Outstanding work, Moniq! Congratulations!

Book Donation

tarr Readers Founder, Miss Karen Furlong drives Penske truck with $100,000 worth of library books to deliver as Christmas gift books to RGCCISD students Karen, accompanied by her mother Vangie met the Rio Grande City librarians at the warehouse this past week because not only was her Penske truck full of books , but she has already shipped 3 pallets of books beforehand.

The librarians welcomed her and they immediately got to work sorting the heavy boxes by titles and grade levels.

In spite of the weather, they had a good workout lifting and packing their books.

They were all very grateful and amazed at the generosity and willpower of Karen and her mom after driving with a Penske truck from Dallas, Texas. Upon arrival

to Rio Grande, Karen and her mom hit something with the rental truck and bent the wheel spoke from the rental.

We are very grateful to Mr. Juan Garcia transportation director for assisting Karen and to Mr. Lupito Garza warehouse director and his staff for loading and reloading the gifts of books to the RGCCISD students.

On behalf of the RGCCISD librarians and school board and the library director Mrs. Adelina G. Roque Guerra, Jr. Elementary Staff Celebrate Boss’s Day RGCCISD Held Annual Staff Christmas Lucheon

RGCCISD held their annual Staff Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016. The Staff was treated to a delicious meal made by our very own maintenance department.

The theme was western, and the meal consisted of traditional beef fajitas, chicken fajitas, rice, beans, potato salad, and pan de campo.

Everyone enjoyed their meal, while Mr. Alfredo Garcia, Superintendent, shared a few words of thanks and reminded everyone that they are appreciated and thanked everyone for all their hard work and dedication to our students. He also emphasized the importance of spending time with family during the holidays. Mr. Daniel J. Garcia, School Board President, Mr. Eduardo “Eddie” Ramirez, School Board Vice-President, Miss Judith A. Solis, School Board Secretary, Ms. Daria “Dr. B” Babineaux, School Board Member, and Mr. Eleazar Velasquez, School Board Member, were present for the celebration. Mr. Eddie Ramirez, School Board Vice-President, spoke on behalf of the School Board and wished everyone a safe and happy holiday. Local Starr County Retired School Employees Attend District Conference

Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi is wishing their communities of Roma and Rio Grande City, as well as all Beta Sigma Phi sisters a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2017. The group enjoyed a holiday celebration in December at the home of Caterer Jesse Pena. President Becky Canales presided during the business session, during which it was reported that their Christmas project of donating to Casa de Esperanza was carried out successfully with much gratitude from Alberto Escobedo and Casa de Esperanza. A delicious meal was enjoyed and gifts exchanged during the social. A program was presented on Disney characters Daisy Duck, girlfriend of Donald, and Bambi from Disney’s 1942 film, “A Life in the Woods.” The members enjoyed singing Christmas carols as a grand finale to the celebration.

Our Guest speaker Leroy DeHaven, TRTA 2nd Vice President, spoke on the makeup of TRTA, what the state office will be working on and the impact on retirees. Mr. DeHaven encouraged all the attendees to attend Rally Day at the State Capitol on March 29, 2017.

Ruben Saenz, Legislative chairman from Dist. I and Member of the State Legislative Committee reported that additional funding from the State of Texas for the TRS Health Care Program is the number one priority for the coming legislative session which begins in January, 2017.

La Casita Fire Department visited the children at Las Lomas Headstart

Ringgold Elementary staff took time on Monday, October 17, 2016 to present Dr. Erica Guerra (Principal) and Mr. Carlos Longoria (Facilitator) with a cake in celebration of Bosses Day. They also Students at RGCHS observe “Día de los Muertos”. An altar dedicated received several gift cards in appreciation of this special day. to Juan Gabriel was set up in the library by the Spanish and Art classes. Students in the Spanish classes visited the altar, then watched an educational video explaining the customs of “Día de los Muertos”.

A special thank you goes out to the Spanish Department and the Art Department teachers and students for helping set up an amazing display.

La Casita Fire Department staff visited the children at Las Lomas Headstart on Tuesday October 25, 2016 to promote fire prevention month. The children learned about fire hazards and asked questions about the duties of fire fighters. They were glad to express to the kids that fire fighters are their friends, and not to be afraid of them.

The district’s Transportation Department headed by Mr. Rick Esparza did a wonderful job giving two presentations at each school and answering the students questions including “why is the bus yellow”, “why is so big” and “why does it have a stop sign on the side”. The students were very attentive and learned a lot to prepare them for daily rides, as well as field trips and longer rides to state championships one day!

National Education Foundation (NEF) Announces $100 Million STEM grants to K-12 Schools for the 2017-18 School Year -- To bridge the significant STEM divide in the Nation’s Schools T. Betrus National Education Foundation (NEF), the national nonprofit leader in K-12 STEM+ education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Reading, IT, Business, Career Tech) in partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY), announces a significant national STEM initiative to provide world-class STEM+ education in academics and application to students of disadvantaged school districts/schools.

The grants help to fund the implementation of the resultsbased STEM+ academies in each school by the State University of New York (SUNY). During the 2015-16 school year, students in the program advanced a grade level in subjects like math in 2530 learning hours, as documented

by SUNY. See http://academies. cyberlearning.org/.

Public schools, school districts, charter and parochial schools must have 35% or more students on free or reduced-cost meals to be eligible for these grants.

NEF provides an 80% matching grant amounting to $1,160 per student per year, and the schools pay 20% equal to $290 per student. This 20% can come from the school budget or other sources such as AdoptA-School grants, (detailed information available at www. nationaleducationfoundation. org).

Schools receive the following eight services: personalized learning for every student with top-rated STEM+ courses mapped to every state’s standards, stipends for teachers, state-of-the art learning management system, mentoring, motivational rewards including gift certificates, Minecraft etc., teacher professional development, job skills training for parents and tech support.

The program is very flexible, with 24/7 online course access that can be deployed by Teachers in the classroom, after school, or at home. Every student, teacher or parent, who successfully completes any course, receives a course completion certificate from the State University of New York, and possibly credits.

Highlighting the importance of the national initiative, Dr. Appu Kuttan, NEF Chairman and globally recognized STEM leader, stated, “U.S. students are currently ranked in the bottom 50% in math globally. For us to maintain our technology and economic leadership globally, we need to substantially improve STEM education, especially in our disadvantaged schools. That is why NEF and SUNY are making this significant investment in our schools and students.”
