“A Year to Say Yes” Dear friends and supporters, What a difference a year makes. In our 2020 Annual Report, I had the privilege to celebrate Starr Commonwealth’s swift action in the face of a pandemic. The resilience of both our staff and our partners allowed for healing to continue despite the obstacles. What we celebrated then is thanks to our history and preparation. And yet, there was still much unknown and many of the successes simply fulfilled our mission—rather than further it. Today, I reflect on 2021 as a curious dichotomy that will propel Starr into the future. Despite the continued pain of a pandemic, our insistence on saying “Yes!” thanks to the aforementioned preparedness has allowed Starr as an organization, and as a service provider, to flourish. The result has been inspiring transformation for many of our partners, and newfound hope for many children on our campus. A pandemic that sparked unknown fears has been met with a reenergized Commonwealth, and I am delighted to share our success with you. In the following pages, you will read about the continued growth of familiar programs and new opportunities for healing. Throughout is a story of our faith made visible—a mantra that Uncle Floyd instilled upon these grounds, a legacy that our incredible staff has spread throughout the world, and a commitment from our supporters and funders that makes it all possible. Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) One of the core values at Starr Commonwealth is the belief in the oneness of humankind, and in 1996 Starr established its Glasswing Program to create a catalyst for conversation around racism and building compassion, honesty, and unity between all people. Starr’s Glasswing approach is to explore DEI through a trauma-informed, resilience-focused and culturally-responsive lens, recognizing that experiences of racism, toxic hierarchy, and oppression are embodied experiences of individual, collective, and historical/intergenerational trauma. In 2021, Starr Commonwealth delivered five conference sessions related to DEI work, and held a cultural diversity training in August of 2021 attended by 230 professionals. These efforts were met with overwhelming support.

My thoughts and reactions to this training were... “This was a great introduction to Equity in Action. Both presenters were lovely in their expressions of truth to power and the constructs that we find ourselves in. Thank you.” “GREAT insights and resources. Appreciate the real-ness; being comfortable with being uncomfortable.” The most impactful part of the training was... “Sitting with my co workers of a variety of teams and experience levels that I don’t usually get to interact with and have a dialogue honestly about our work environment and reflect on our roles and impacts in the system and how to support each other.” The key concept l learned from this training was... “Each [person] likely has a different perception of issues. Individuals often personalize an experience through their personal “filters” such as historical data, life experiences and learned or inherited prejudice.” DRIVEN TO HEAL

Campus Safe Haven

In response to an urgent request from the U.S. federal government in April of 2021, Starr Commonwealth opened its Albion campus to help alleviate ongoing humanitarian challenges facing our world. Initially, Starr welcomed unaccompanied minors from the United States’ southern border. Upon reunification and proper placement of this population, Starr then served as home to children from Afghanistan. To implement this program, Starr signed a facilities agreement to allow the Administration for Children and Families to utilize its 350-acre campus as a safe haven. “For more than a century, our campus has served as a safe haven for children in need,” said Starr President and CEO Elizabeth Carey. “We have again been called to open our hearts and our campus as a refuge – this time to children arriving without parents or guardians from around the world. “When asked to help, we said yes – immediately and enthusiastically, just as our founder, Floyd Starr, would want us to do. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the Albion community and beyond, with so many kind and generous organizations and people reaching out with offers of help and messages of encouragement.”

“My work on Starr’s campus over the years has prepared me for just about anything,” said Starr’s Campus Operations and Program Specialist Katie Carpenter. “And yet when we greeted our first children from this program, what I witnessed was very familiar. These are kids who are scared and alone, who are only hoping to find some love and support. When they found just that on our campus, it filled my heart to see frowns turn to smiles—tears turn to laughter. Hope is universal, and I am so proud of what Starr has made possible for these kids.” “Our expertise in healing trauma and building resilience can truly benefit the children who have come to our campus,” Carey said. “Many of us have all watched the heartbreaking pictures on the nightly news of children who have been abandoned, far away from home and without their families, and wondered how we can help. Starr has safe beds, secure cottages and a campus of caring people – this is how we can, and must, help.”

Resilient Schools Project Since 2018, these efforts have been amassing data and proof points for the efficacy of the model. Starr now stands in a position to celebrate these projects in the form of a whitepaper, completed in April of 2021. Through Starr’s Resilient Schools Project efforts with partnering schools, the Resilient Schools Project whitepaper documents the many gains that meet the immediate needs of children.

Starr Commonwealth’s flagship Resilient Schools Project is an evidence-informed and comprehensive systems approach to establishing a culture of resilience and trauma-informed practices in K-12 school buildings and districts nationwide. The goal is to equip school professionals with knowledge, training, and support to foster resilience in children. Training & Coaching Swift action in response to the pandemic in 2020 allowed for Starr Commonwealth to not only continue serving schools across the country, but empowered the organization to be more nimble in its delivery than ever in 2021. While virtual trainings and expanded eLearning strategy were implemented to substitute traditional in-person trainings, they are now seen as critical and financially-responsible options for both Starr and our customers. Accordingly, Starr has positioned itself as the model for trauma-informed, resilience-focused professional development. 15,300 professionals engaged with Starr’s programming, services, or resources in FY 20-21 and 14,460 of those professionals received training. The 2021 conference, featuring 20 dynamic sessions, built on the success of the 2020 conference. Combined, 2020-2021 achieved the greatest two-year attendance mark to date. There were 415 conference attendees. 94% of the participants that completed a survey indicated that the content of the conference will impact how they work with youth and 100% indicated that they will attend a future Starr virtual conference. Attendees were able to access the entire conference for one month following the live event, ensuring each was able to enjoy the entire scope of Starr’s offerings.

Both individual trainings and the conference alike were met with overwhelming appreciation and approval from the professionals who attended.

Behavioral Health Following a year of uncertainty met with quickthinking and adaptation, Starr Behavioral Health marked 2021 as a banner year for breaking through barriers of toxic stress and trauma in children and families. Telehealth services continued in the face of the pandemic, Starr’s clinicians were able to serve many clients through in-person appointments, and schools identified the dire need for more support as children returned to school. As a result, Starr Behavioral Health achieved positive expansion in both client base and demographics. In total, Starr Behavioral Health served 245 clients in a range of settings from its clinic in Harper Woods, Michigan, to Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and several school districts throughout the state. Of 62 behavioral health clients that completed surveys, 97% indicated that they received the services they wanted and 100% rated that they were satisfied with the services.

Naveah was referred to Starr Behavioral Health by her doctor at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Her clinician at Starr noticed the need for further support of the family. This resulted in Naveah’s mother receiving therapy at the same time as her. Both clients have built strong rapports with their clinicians, and the family is working through its complex trauma history that affects their everyday struggles. Mom is working with her clinician to prioritize attainable goals to improve the wellbeing of the family. Support for Starr Behavioral Health is healing families like Naveah’s across Michigan.

Traditionally, service in schools has been focused on middle school-aged children. 2021’s expansion meant clinicians began treating many elementary school-aged children as well—a critical shift to provide early intervention in order to interrupt the cycle of trauma and toxic stress. “A year ago I was confident that Starr Behavioral Health’s new office and approach in the wake of COVID-19 would redefine what our clinicians were capable of,” said Starr’s Director of Behavioral Health Becca Gerlach. “Today, we are seeing the fruits of their hard work as we help a much broader range of children and families than ever. Serving more schools means more children and families are healing. Their healing heals the community, and that is a vital cornerstone to Starr’s mission. None of that would be possible without the generosity of our supporters, and I am so thankful for their investment in these kids.”

Gladsome Circle driven to heal Gladsome Circle recognizes our friends who fund named endowments, endowed scholarships, charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts. These planned gifts secure the future financial stability of Starr Commonwealth. Each member of Gladsome Circle can receive a limited edition print of “The Old Barn,” depicting Floyd Starr’s original barn and the story of its significance. Gladsome Circle celebrates the ongoing mission of Starr Commonwealth and our friends who ensure that our services are available to children in need as long as these services are needed.

Through these strategic partnerships, Starr is now able to help prepare young professionals entering their respective fields to understand the effects of toxic stress and trauma on the individuals they will serve. Educated Stars of Tomorrow, LLC (ESOT), founded by Willie Burton in 2011, has spent the past ten years developing ExcelU, a schooland community-based curriculum that unifies academic success and health-wellness for students. Using a multifaceted approach, this curriculum engages both students and student-athletes to equip them with the necessary tools to maneuver the complexities of student life leading into adulthood. ESOT has partnered with Starr Commonwealth to help develop ExcelU content and bring products to market. Resilience Coach in Action

Elijah Armstrong is one of Starr’s Resilience Coaches, currently serving Marshall Public Schools. Resilience Coaches are responsible for coaching and mentoring school staff on trauma-informed, resilience-focused strategies, as well as working with individual students to see their own greatness. 5th Annual Night of Starrs

A familiar sense of hope swept through our communities for the 5th Annual Night of Starrs, sponsored by Oaklawn. It had been 895 days since friends and supporters of Starr were able to meet in person to celebrate the resiliency of all children and honor Stand Tall Award honorees. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Starr pivoted to a virtual event in 2020. In September of 2021, we finally were able to be together. While the intimate affair was limited in attendees, it was no less special of a night than those past. Scores of supporters arrived at the Franke Center for the Arts in Marshall to hear the latest updates from Starr Commonwealth, honor Stand Tall Award recipients, and most importantly impact the lives of countless children. In total, Starr Commonwealth raised close to $80,000 that will be directly spent on breaking down barriers to healing in children. To relive this inspirational event, visit starr.org/nos.
