Starr Commonwealth 2020 Annual Report

A Year Like No Other What can one say about the past year that has not already been repeated ad nauseum through the media, Facebook, and countless conversations— both virtual and in-person? To that extent, I will not use this space as an attempt to contextualize 2020, for it is far too reductive to state the impact of a pandemic that surely affected every individual in their own way. Rather, I write to you today swelling with pride as I reflect on the true lasting legacy of the past year—the resiliency of the human spirit, and how it manifested itself at Starr Commonwealth. That resiliency has been at the core of our work since 1913, and what we strive to instill in all of the children, families, and professionals we work with. This past year, however, our work was needed more than ever—and our staff was called upon to build their own resilience in ways not previously seen. Beyond all else, the COVID-19 pandemic showed Starr and our partners what is truly possible when we act with the oneness of humankind in mind to foster healing no matter the obstacle. In the following pages, you will read the many ways both our organization and those we partner with adapted and overcame the inherent difficulties of not only continuing services during a pandemic, but the unforeseen consequences for our children in a year like no other. In short, Starr will emerge from the pandemic with more streamlined systems, an expanded menu of offerings for children and professionals, and a furthered commitment to fiscal responsibility. Your influence and impact on Starr’s 2020 results cannot be understated. As you read, it is my hope you share that same pride I feel, as we cannot do this work alone. We are indebted to all who are Driven to Heal with Starr, and I thank you for your contribution to the following stories. Yours in Healing,

Elizabeth Carey President and CEO

Our Covid Response From day-to-day operations in a “new normal”, to global shifts in need and policy, the coronavirus pandemic has transformed many aspects of Starr Commonwealth’s fulfillment of our mission. From residential care to Starr Behavioral Health, and all the eLearning and professional training and coaching in between, Starr remains Driven to Heal. We are proud to report how Starr has answered the call to continue serving those in need. Starr has donated more than 120,000 downloads of online education courses to support teaching trauma-informed care protocols to K-12 educators and clinicians around the country. These foundational courses teach professionals how to identify, understand, and respond to trauma in children by building resilience, offering proactive strategies such as fostering connections, prioritizing social and emotional skills, establishing safety, and promoting play.

“During this time of uncertainty, it’s important to support teachers and other caring adults with tools they can use,” said Starr Commonwealth Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Caelan Soma. “We may have countless children who are impacted traumatically by this pandemic, so having resources available for the adults in their lives is critical. We need to answer not just the ‘why’ but also the ‘how’ to create the best supports possible for traumatized children and the school professionals who serve them.” “We were truly overwhelmed by this response,” celebrates Starr President & CEO Elizabeth Carey. “We view ourselves as the experts and industry leader, but we didn’t think so many people would take advantage of this offer. It reinvigorates everything we are doing and cements why this work is so vital.”

Our Starr’sResults COVID-19 response goes beyond eLearning. Text To ensure the children and families of Starr Behavioral Health can continue to receive care— more needed than ever for some—the staff moved quickly to implement telehealth services. This was made possible through the support of the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. The result was more accessibility for healing than ever before:

s 1 ,121 hours of trauma assessment and intervention

s 174 sessions of occupational therapy

“Our ultimate mission is to get everyone who cares for children to be trauma-informed and resilience-focused,” explained Carey. “As we watched COVID-19 sweep across our country, we realized educators and other caring adults needed the tools we offered more than ever, but we couldn’t rely on our traditional approach in the face of a pandemic. I am so proud of our staff’s adaptability and creativity. With so much uncertainty, they have embodied universal hope, boundless love, and limitless success in a manner that not only responds to current need, but strengthens the very foundation of our mission.”

No matter the need, Starr has empowered all to flourish. 7

Resilient Schools Project Resilient School Projects Since its inception in 2017, the Resilient Schools Project has served as a systems approach, helping schools transform to become safer, more inclusive and supportive environments. 2020 brought forth a unique challenge to this model. Not only did the organization face the obvious obstacles that come with being present and relevant to our clients while not in-person, but needed to do so while walking alongside educators and students who at the same time were navigating their own challenges of simply holding classes. In overcoming the logistical hurdles blocking the organization’s path, our own resilience has paved the way for even more success for the schools with which we partner. Starr’s partners remained resilient and focused on the needs of their students as they navigated COVID-19. The organization supported these efforts by not only providing virtual services, but offering any other help we could. This included meal delivery, parent support videos, and trauma-screening strategies for teachers viewing students remotely. “The results of 2020 for our partner schools, despite being produced in an ever-changing environment of uncertainty, speak volumes to the power of Starr’s model,” affirms Starr’s Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer Derek Allen. “Additionally, lessons *For report details, visit starr.org/annual-report.

and strategies learned throughout the pandemic can be applied to any situation the future holds for Starr’s partner schools—making our work even more valuable to our current and future partners. I am so proud of both our coaches in the field as well as the schools who have committed to transforming their school culture with Starr.”

“By implementing restorative practices, such as a calming corner and body mapping, I have witnessed a change within myself, my students and the overall classroom environment–for the better.” “Thank you...My classroom is running smoother… I’m actually enjoying myself this year.”

Behavioral Health Our Results There has always been the inherent need for behavioral health assessment and intervention services. Since 2019, Starr Commonwealth has answered this need with its own clinics throughout southern Michigan to not only improve the communities in which they are embedded, but to model the impact of wraparound services for children. In a year when Starr’s services were needed most, Starr Behavioral Health not only expanded the reach endeavoured upon in its mission but dynamically grew to serve in new ways for the benefit of even more children in need.

Case Study at Children’s Hospital of Michigan In case studies of four children receiving our services at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, there was an average percentage reduction of post-traumatic stress symptoms and reactions in the following categories:*

t28.5%

Reduction in Re-Experiencing

Reduction in Avoidance

t53.5%

Through the implementation of telehealth logistics, Starr Behavioral Health now provides services well beyond its geographical footprint. From Marquette to Detroit, Starr Behavioral Health is also able to work with parents and caregivers more than ever, as well as expand their offerings such as crisis defusing sessions. The staff is even able to train others in defusing facilitation to empower other professionals with our trauma-informed, resilience-focused tools and strategies. The result has been a growing staff of clinicians and therapists, as well as additional school partners committed to the wholehealth of children. “While 2020 was certainly a ‘learn on your feet’ year for our staff, I am in awe of what we and our clients have been able to accomplish despite the pandemic,” reflects Starr’s Director of Behavioral Health Becca Gerlach. “What we are capable of now with our new tools is a testament to all who have believed in us since opening our doors. There are always more children in need, and I am confident we can be more available than ever before.” In addition to Starr Behavioral Health’s success in 2020, they have also quickly outgrown their original space in Harper Woods. While still located in Harper Woods, Starr is proud to have opened the doors to a larger space more well-equipped to provide additional services for children.

Training, Coaching & eLearning To truly achieve systems-level change so that all children, families, and communities can flourish, Starr’s work must rely on equipping professionals in all communities with the skillset they need to empower children long after the training has ended. In a year where authentic connection could have been more difficult than ever, Starr’s trainers and coaches remained resilient by adapting quickly. Moving forward, the organization is now more streamlined with more services than ever. “Our goal has always been to be as cost-effective as we can,” explains Starr’s Director of Professional Training & Coaching Kathy Hart. “With more automation and utilizing virtual offerings, we not only have achieved our goal but have broken down barriers for professionals to engage and interact in ways not before possible. It is incredibly gratifying to watch both our staff and the professionals they serve flourish.” While training and coaching continued to serve students and professionals across the country, Starr’s reach grew exponentially thanks to the continued growth of its robust online learning platforms. Beyond Starr’s pandemic response of offering its foundational courses at no cost to all, the digital space also provided a tremendous opportunity for countless more professionals to experience our Trauma & Resilience Conference, which was held virtually for the first time. This not only tripled the attendance from years previous, it provided a platform for more sessions to be held than ever before.

Residential During the 2020 fiscal year, 294 youth were served in our specialized residential treatment programs, Starr Albion Prep. Our treatment services addressed behavioral issues such as juvenile delinquency, sex offenses, substance abuse, mental health issues, and mental health and behavioral stabilization. The average length of stay for youth receiving residential services was 8.47 months. 69% were released to family or another community setting. Starr Albion Prep’s staff was committed to keeping all safe throughout the pandemic, and served as a model of effective response for similar campuses across the state. Residential treatment services paused at the end of the fiscal year. Decisions regarding renewing or modifying services are currently underway. We have seen many transformations in our 108 year history. When faced with adversity, the children and staff of Starr Commonwealth remain resilient. This is due in large part to the dedicated staff of Starr Albion Prep, and Starr cannot thank these loving individuals enough for their service. Regardless of the future of our offerings, we know it will be centered in universal hope, boundless love, and limitless success for all children.

Oneness of Humankind Resilient School Projects

Starr Commonwealth believes deeply in the oneness of the human family. Our greatest power to heal is through relationship. In a year of social unrest, Starr is continuing conversations and building connections that support people in reflecting on thoughts, feelings, and actions regarding equality, and taking action to dismantle systems of racism and division. This has manifested itself within the organization through a restated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. For over 30 years, Starr has worked with these values in mind through its Glasswing Racial Healing program. We are proud to build on this legacy of healing and are eager to share more announcements with our supporters throughout 2021. • R ead our Stated Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion • View our latest Glasswing presentation: At the Intersection of White Privilege and COVID-19 • R ead our response in the wake of George Floyd’s murder Text

Night of Starrs presented by

Real People. Real Care.

The 4th Annual Night of Starrs was truly an evening that celebrated all who are Driven to Heal. Although Starr moved to a virtual event for the first time, there was much to celebrate as the organization recognized Stand Tall Award honorees, the resiliency of all children, and the generosity of supporters. And, given the virtual platform, Starr was able to bring this event to more supporters than ever before! We are thrilled to share that your investment in Starr’s work totaled more than $90,000. We appreciate your generosity and commitment to supporting Starr to create brighter futures for children. Your overwhelming support is a demonstration of why giving and the work of Starr matters. Together, we can continue our movement to heal children. A replay of the week’s events can be viewed at starr.org/nos.
