The production of Best@Bukit Jalil has been a labour of love. From the office to the groundworks, we took meticulous care to sketch a metaphorical portrait for Bukit Jalil.

Under the sweltering heat, we walked the path taken by the people, trying to peer into the lives they lead. Moving around the 80-acres Bukit Jalil Recreational Park in formal office attire was particularly challenging, especially when the sun shone brightly that day.

Quantifying the unquantifiable

But every cloud has its silver lining. The hospitality of the people is yet another turn of the chapter that we will never forget. I could not forget the wholesome scent of freshly baked bread or the golden crisp of their waffles.

The sight and sound of life was something that numbers could not reflect or quantify. And I believe the Best@ series is a fair representation of the land. It is the face that the masses could relate to; bringing shape and texture to the abstract.

Being an Ipoh girl through and through, the name Bukit Jalil meant nothing but the Bukit Jalil Stadium and the International Medical University for me before I started working on this series.

It is indeed true that to know and feel the essence of a place; one should visit the nooks and crannies of the area, talk to its people, eat its food Tharmini and inhale its air. That is what we did, and it has Kenas become much more than the stadium and university to me. In fact, I have grown fond of Bukit Jalil’s food and people.

Previously known as Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex, the KL Sports City (KLSC) plays a huge role among the Bukit Jalil community as well as for the country. The KLSC is an icon for international sports and entertainment events in Asia.

Ensconced in the urban heart of Bukit Jalil is the 5.5-acre land of Xtion Paintball, where children and adult alike slug it out in a game of guns and bruises. Dotting the field are the miniature human-made hills, plastic barrels and rocks that form part and parcel of the battle zone.

From afar, one could see the vast layers of netting erected to form a protective zone to shelter the passerby from the stray bullets.

According to Xtion Paintball general manager Raja Anor Shah, parents are now encouraging their children to play paintball.

The palace life is no longer a luxury that can only be afforded by the royals. Ame Soeur Boutique Cafe brings the French palace into a quiet corner in Bukit Jalil, and it is open for all commoners to experience its white and gold, million dollar decor.

With custom-made gold cutleries, elegant furniture and RM1,000 plus Belgium coffee makers, Ame Soeur radiates with an aura of opulence and fine dining. Most customers would assume that the luxurious environment would come with a high price tag, but this could not be further away from the truth.

Unlike most Bolognese that uses meat chunks, Fairuse shreds the roast chicken meat into thin slices before cooking it with the bolognese sauce to create a new experience. Others include the use of salted black bean with her Rosemary Chicken.

Rosemary chicken leg

The chicken meat is well cooked, and it tallies well with the potatoes. Even better is the thick and flavourful gravy that brings out the taste of the chicken.

Beef Wellington

Bathed in a rich beefy sauce, the meat is soft and tender. According to the chef, the gravy itself took approximately 10 hours to make. The painstaking process is reflected in its aromatic and appetising taste. The Beef Wellington could be further complemented if the meat was medium-rare instead of being fully cooked.

Marinara Bay

Unlike most seafood spaghetti with tomato sauce, the Marinara takes a bold direction with a hot and spicy Malaysian taste. The oysters, together with the prawns and squid chunks were fresh and flavourful, matching well with the sauce.

Lamb shoulder risotto

An excellent combination of sliced mushrooms and garlic form part of the risotto. Texture wise, it has the right softness; being done at the right temperature and time. The lamb shoulder is a tad tough to the bite, but the meat yields quickly when sliced to a tinier chunk.

Munching Mob co-founder Sien Pei Nee, together with her brother learned cooking from the internet as well as through trial and error. “We improved ourselves from the feedback of our customers,” said Sien Pei Nee, adding that their upgraded Wazzup 2.0 now has a thicker cheese topping due to the suggestion from the masses.

The floor tiles of the cafe also reflect their passion as dancers with a half star pattern, representing the dance stage. Sien Pei Nee pointed to the top where a couple of brightly lit bulbs hung at the ceiling, saying that those bulbs represented the dreams of the ordinary people and that they could achieve anything.

Peekaboo Cafe

Soft endearing plushies dominated the place, sitting on the counter, benches and chairs. Others peered out from their hidden positions, giving visitors a sense of being peekabooed. This is one hideout that fans of the Japanese animation My Neighbour Totoro could go to.

Cartoon enthusiast will also be delighted by the adorable cartoon paintings on the wall. According to Peekaboo Cafe owner Thong Zhin Yiu, the idea of this cartoon themed cafe was to appeal to customers who are born during the eighties and the nineties.

“This cafe is like a memory lane for their childhood, allowing them to reminisce about the cartoons that have brought a smile into their lives,” said Thong.

He added that the cafe is also a relaxing place for people to relax and unwind while they enjoyed a cup of coffee. Thong said that the Peekaboo Cafe also takes the food that they are serving the customers into serious consideration, despite the cartoonish themed it is centred around.

According to him, some cafes try to increase serving speed by pre-cooking the meal in anticipation of the customer’s request.

Sharing some of his tips, a meal should only be cooked after being requested by the customer. “This is why our service can be a bit slower, but the quality will be better,” said Thong.

He also invites customers to try out the cafe’s signature dish, called the Three Cups Chicken Pasta. Thong said the dish was a mixture of Western and Taiwan cooking style.

“We use Chinese herbs here instead of the basil leaves commonly used in paste making,” said Thong.

Staying in the Puchong area, Thong says that Bukit Jalil has the potential for growth. “Travelling back and forth through commuting is convenient for the residents here,” he said, adding that it will get more crowded with the amount of new business blooming in the area.

Three cups chicken pasta A mix of Taiwanese spices and Italian pasta creates a variation that is both delightful and appetising for the Malaysian taste buds. The chicken meat is tender, and this is further complemented by the thinly sliced mushroom pieces.

Garlands of dried flowers hung from above, with ample cushions on the wooden benches, providing a cosy and rustic feel.

A lone bicycle stands in the corner, painting a minimalist and humble setting that many could relate to.

According to Fishee Coffee manager Wylie Tang Wai Li, the idea of conceiving Fishee came after his travel to Copenhagen, Denmark. Inspired by the culture and people there, Wylie Tang decided to open a cafe with a homely Scandinavian theme.

Mega projects, often involving a huge amount of taxpayers’ money, are seen as daring ventures with uncertain prospects despite most of them being launched after intensive research and careful deliberation.

The story of Bukit Jalil is testament to the transformative power of a large-scale infrastructure project and what it could do to a locality that was once no more than a wasteland.

Located about 15km south of Kuala Lumpur city centre, Bukit Jalil is now a vibrant suburb with lots to offer. Its skyhigh developments, majestic buildings, vast green park and flourishing township are a far cry from the area’s humble beginnings in 1992 when it was known as Bukit Jalil Estate among locals.

The advent of an international sporting event led to the successful transformation of Bukit Jalil, with an increasing number of developers arriving at the scene.

The pioneer Berjaya Land Bhd is the pioneer developer in Bukit Jalil. It started in the early 1990s by building the 18-hole Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort with bungalow lots.

The 165-acre golf course, now one of the attractions of Bukit Jalil, was renovated and then accorded the title of “Most Improved Golf Course in Malaysia” at the 2016 Malaysia Golf Awards.

Motorists from Shah Alam could utilise the Kesas Highway or MEX to reach Bukit Jalil. The New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and Kesas Highway also connect residents to Sunway and Subang Jaya.

Bukit Jalil acted as a temporary central bus station while Pudu Central was being renovated. Users of public transport are well served by four LRT stations, namely Bukit Jalil, Sri Petaling, Awam Besar and Muhibbah.

relationship with Bukit Jalil because the easy connectivity is marred by frequent traffic congestion which is a nuisance for the majority of residents who still largely rely on road transport. During peak hours, commuters can expect a bumper-to-bumper situation which is partly contributed by the influx of traffic from Puchong and Kuala Lumpur.

According to Malton Bhd executive director Hong Lay Chuan, the group is looking at easing Bukit Jalil traffic by building a flyover to Puchong leading into Bukit Jalil City from Jalan 13/155C. Once Bukit Jalil City is completed, it is expected to ease the daily congestion.

Khong: Bukit Jalil lies strategically off the western side of KL-Seremban Expressway, sandwiched between Lebuhraya Shah Alam (KESAS) on the north, and is bounded by Sri Petaling and Taman OUG. Bukit Jalil Expressway on the south is also bounded by Taman Kinrara and the Technology Park Serdang.

Both of these expressways run parallel and subsequently join together onto Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) on the west end.

The fall in price for both The Treez and The Z Residence is due to the implementation of the Developer Interest Bearing Scheme (DIBS).

Another reason is the 0% low payment package that was introduced years ago by the government but is now no longer available.

It is vital that the price equilibrium is met and the developers need to address the high demand by developing units in Bukit Jalil in order to prevent â&#x20AC;&#x153;property overheatingâ&#x20AC;? in the area.

It is also crucial for the developers to control demand by not overly supplying units in Bukit Jalil and regulating its current and future launches.

It is foreseeable with the current trend that there will come a point where the oversupply will lead to traffic and human congestion in the near future.

Alternatively, the developer should also explore other methods to improve the lifestyle of the residence in Bukit Jalil, such as building amenities like international schools, medical centres and other family-friendly amenities.

In conclusion, the author is concerned that there will be an oversupply of units in Bukit Jalil which will result in price stagnation and traffic congestion in Bukit Jalil for the foreseeable future.
