Snakes warning Community Calendar for local homes Friday RESIDENTS should beware of long grass and clean up around the homes to avoid harbouring unwanted and deadly serpentine guests, council has warned. City Hall issued the warning as growth from a wet winter and spring drives a rich habitat for snakes this year. Council’s environment and natural resources unit warned that anyone who came across a snake should keep themselves and pets clear. “Snakes tend to take a higher toll on pets than people,’’ a council spokesman said. “All snakes are protected, so people must not kill them or injure them. There are penalties in legislation for doing this.’’ Anyone who encountered a snake “concerning them” should contact a commercial, licensed snake catcher or Department of Sustainability and Environment on 136 186 for advice, the spokesperson said.
