NEW ARTS SPACE EMERGES

ALittle Art Space in Kingscote recently marked its first anniversary, holding its debut SA Living Artists exhibition to celebrate a year of success.

The island’s newest little arts venue was born in 2024 after Fine Art KI closed.

In a novel collaboration two artists and a curator joined forces to operate their respective businesses from the single shared space on Dauncey Street.

For the visitor it is a seamless presentation of intriguing art forms, local creations and handmade gifts across all price points - always with a warm welcome from one of the three founders.

Patti Blucher of By Blu, has lived on KI all her life, previously exhibiting 12 times with the Kangaroo Island exhibitions for SALA at National Wine Centre.

Patti is at heart a maker and a multi-disciplinary artist.

She specialises in unique sterling silver and salvaged metal jewellery and conveys heartfelt moments of island life into vivid paintings.

She takes her inspiration from the natural world, her sense of place and an abiding environmental connection.

Patti’s innate creativity can also be seen 24/7 on the front window of A little Art Space.

Her constantly changing

window art is a living storybook of Kangaroo Island’s seasons and spirit in hand drawn wonder.

Jane Anders has been beachcombing on the island since her retirement in 2014, collecting sea glass, vintage pottery shards, and various found objects.

After six years of gathering these into a vast collection, she began incorporating them into artwork, leading to the creation

Kangaroo Island Tidal Treasures.

Whimsical pictures and mandalas are assembled from sea glass and ceramic shards as found, shaped by mother nature and crafted with imagination and love.

Tidal Treasures are collected worldwide as meaningful mementos and gifts, attracting visitors who are enthralled by the island’s history and provenance of some of the

pieces.

Jane started her journey at the Penneshaw markets and is delighted to now be regularly located within A little Art Space.

Curator Fleur Peters of Art By Design KI represents silversmith husband Fred Peters and showcases an outstanding selection of original artworks; including sculpture, textiles and glass, by other well-known island and SA artists.

With 16 years as a Gallerista, Fleur has presented more than 100 art events on island, and 13 mainland shows in Adelaide.

She knows the island’s artists personally and has a depth and breadth of knowledge of the local art scene.

Her portfolio includes the re-selling of exciting island produced artworks spanning 30 years.

Since opening, A little Art Space’s collaboration between its makers and curator has resulted in a unique gallery.

Visitors and locals have responded enthusiastically, especially appreciating the affordable, authentic Kangaroo Island art on display.

We are open even when we’re closed. Call us to arrange a private opening, we’re nearby. Check our socials for updates: By Blu | Kangaroo Island Tidal Treasures| Art by design KI

KI OLIVES CELEBRATES 30TH

HAINES

Kangaroo Island Olives is celebrating 30 years of operation this year and general manager Michael Esposito, who also happens to president of Olives South Australia, has written about what olive farming means to his family:

There’s a saying, “You plant a vineyard for your children and an olive grove for your grandchildren”.

If you commit to olive farming, you’re in it for the long run.

The olive tree is a fightersome say you can’t kill an olive tree.

It can endure neglect, disease, drought and even bushfires.

It’ll be here long after we’re gone and will continue to bear fruit for hundreds if not thousands of years - it’s a family legacy I’m privileged and proud to carry on.

This creed was written leading into our 30th anniversary.

2025 will signify 30 years of olive growing on Kangaroo Island.

The Creed:

To be successful for our customers, we must produce quality products and provide excellent service.

To stay true to our heritage, we must hold ourselves accountable to the principles that our elders have taught us. Those are:

■ Work with Mother Nature

■ Live off the land

■ Share the love

If you’re interested in learning more about the three principles of The Creed then keep reading below.

1. Work with Mother Nature

We acknowledge what is good for the land must come first, but that’s sometimes easier said than done.

Some days, Mother Nature is beautiful and magical. Other days, she’s a stubborn cow.

It’s a constant work in progress, and things don’t work out the way you planned, but we test, measure, and go again. Make it work, then make it look pretty.

At Kangaroo Island Olives we apply regenerative agricultural practices and natural sequence farming.

We look at our farm as a

whole ecosystem, where native animals flourish, and woodland areas are protected by heritage agreement.

We apply techniques to improve soil health, biodiversity, climate resilience and water security.

All while making farming more productive and resilient. The adoption of technology is to be used for good and the application of economics to drive efficient use of resources.

Doing more with less is a key driver for us.

2. Live Off The Land Be innovative and resourceful. Use what’s available, and build for the long-term.

Money is not an abundant resource, and like most farms we have a massive boneyard.

Nothing gets thrown away –repurpose, recycle, up-cycle and reuse.

Bush mechanics and elbow grease. Here’s a few rules we live by on the farm:

Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it can’t work- the best bits of machinery are the primitive ones Get the job done - improvise if need be There’s not much that twitches of wire can’t fix Empty olive drums have many uses There’s no shame in borrowing things Always return borrowed items in the same, if not, better condition Never throw away food. Ever.

3. Share the love

Whether it’s knowledge, resources, food, time, or money - if you can, share it.

The day will come when you

need help, and all those good deeds will eventually circle back. Share opportunities too.

Celebrate success and share the wins. Share the workload, because you can’t do everything.

Foster relationships and build positive connections within the community.

Most importantly, share the land, share the water, and share the love.

Fight and care for heritageprotected lands, because humans aren’t the only species living here.

Our farm is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora. Its our responsibility to protect it and not interfere

IGA MAKES IT EASY TO SHOP

Penneshaw IGA is a one stop shop for islanders and visitors alike, being open from 8am until 8pm every day, and literally one minute from the ferry.

It has gone through a huge transformation since owners Sue and Mark McLeay took over the store in 2017, culminating in a complete refurbishment late last year.

It offers a great range of products including groceries, giftware, barbecue needs, beach and outdoor items, homewares, hardware, and souvenirs.

It also has a comprehensive range of local and SA produce and is always looking to source new lines from local producers.

Sue and Mark find their click and collect service to be popular with time-poor residents and visitors alike.

The service makes it easier for customers to pre order and collect their shopping on their way through Penneshaw.

It could be locals short on time or holiday makers wanting to collect their groceries on arrival, Sue said.

“The new rewards program offers extra discounts and cash back to card holders, another initiative to reward our regular IGA shoppers.”

Penneshaw IGA has become an integral part of the Island community.

A percentage of sales from the store’s “Community Co” range goes towards supporting local groups and charities.

KICK BACK AT BAY OF SHOALS

SOPHISTICATED YET APPROACHABLE WINES KINGSCOTE

Capturing stunning sea views over the vineyard towards historic Reeves Point, Bay of Shoals Wines is well worth a visit.

This is a boutique coastal winery located on what was originally Reeves farm.

Its cellar door was established in 2006, and the vineyard produces sophisticated yet approachable wines.

Bay of Shoals Wines offer an authentic Kangaroo Island product, with the grapes being grown, harvested, and made onsite at the winery.

Aside from experiencing its personal approach to wine tasting, you are welcome to sit in any of the beautiful seating areas, overlooking the amazing views, and enjoy a glass of wine with a platter-style lunch, or a pre-booked picnic or seafood platters.

Bay of Shoals Wines offer many wine varieties that are made by its winemaker, Frank Huisman, who came from Tasmania, bringing with him many years of winemaking experience.

It is no surprise that the award-winning riesling, which is grown close to the water’s edge and thought to be the

closest to the sea in the southern hemisphere, has proved to be very popular.

Bay of Shoals’ range of white wines offer a refined and elegant style showing lively crisp, clean notes, and intense fruit flavours.

The winery is conveniently located just five minutes from Kingscote, and aside from wine tasting and sales, accommodation “Vineyard Escape” is available overlooking the vines and Bay of Shoals.

A PLACE TO ‘WINE’ DOWN

DUDLEY EAST

Aplace where couples, friends and family can enjoy a quiet drink, a tasting paddle and delicious food, False Cape Wines is the cellar door for every occasion.

Julie and Jamie Helyar have created an ambience and experience where people of all ages can kick back and enjoy.

“Our cellar door is like driving into an Australian oasis that is surrounded by gum trees, gardens, and vineyards on the picturesque Willson River,” Julie said.

“Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural surroundings and truly relax from the stresses of daily life.

“Our favourite thing about the cellar door is the visitor’s smiles and appreciation as they enjoy a few hours of the simple things in life - good wine, food, nature and friends.”

The use of limestone and recycled timber creates a fantastic relaxed atmosphere.

There is a large deck, lawn areas, kids playground, farm animals, basketball backboard, shaded areas, plus indoor and outdoor wood fires, making it the ideal family destination all year round.

Originally a teacher and shearer, the Helyars had family connections to Lake Breeze Wines, located at Langhorne

Creek, who encouraged them to start their vineyard.

“We take pride in showcasing premium, authentic Kangaroo Island wines where the grapes are all dry grown, only relying on rainfall,” Julie said.

“This ensures intense flavours and colours in our wines.”

For more than 20 years, the winery has been producing incredible wines to the highest standard. Their recent vintages rates over 90 points by James

Halliday, with their cabernet merlot, cabernet sauvignon and riesling all scoring 94 points.

Their brother and brotherin-law, Greg Follett, who is an award winning winemaker, has taken the Kangaroo Island cool climate grapes and handcrafted them into a fantastic selection of premium wines.

False Cape Cellar Door came to fruition to showcase the wines as well as their beautiful location on the Dudley

Peninsula.

Off the grid and completely relying on solar power, Julie said that there is also limited mobile reception, which they love.

“It’s phones down, which creates conversation and laughter instead,” she said.

False Cape Wines is open seven days a week, from 11am to 5pm and is located at 1054 Willson River Road, Dudley East. → Falsecapewines.com.au

TRY THE SCONES

SET against a backdrop of gently swaying lavender fields, Emu Bay Lavender is a farmgate cafe and working lavender farm that captures the essence of Kangaroo Island’s natural charm.

Just a short drive from the coast, this hidden gem invites visitors to slow down, breathe deep, and indulge in a uniquely fragrant experience where food, nature, and artisan craft come together.

Established in 2001 with a humble patch of lavender, the farm has flourished into a 51acre estate boasting more than 7500 plants across 12 varieties of Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula Intermedia.

Owned and operated by a fifth-generation Island family, Emu Bay Lavender is built on values of sustainability, local pride, and hands-on production.

Every product is crafted and packaged on site - from soothing oils and balms to the farm’s signature lavender honey, made with the help of Kangaroo

Island’s iconic Ligurian bees.

In the cafe, the seasonal menu showcases fresh, local ingredients, but it’s the signature lavender scones that have truly captured hearts, and appetites.

Served warm with house-made jam and cream, these delicately perfumed treats are fast becoming just as iconic as the Remarkable Rocks - a must-try for visitors seeking the full Island experience.

Summer sees the lavender fields in full bloom, creating a sea of purple that’s as photogenic as it is fragrant.

About 8000 bunches are harvested each year by hand, with just 10 kilograms of essential oil distilled annually - a labor of love that defines the purity of Emu Bay’s therapeutic range.

The cafe is open daily for breakfast from 9am to 11.30am, and lunch from 12pm to 3pm.

Whether you’re coming for the blooms, the bees, or the now-famous scones, Emu Bay Lavender offers a truly sensory slice of Kangaroo Island. → emubaylavenderfarm.com.au

SWEEPING VIEWS AT DUDLEY

PENNESHAW

Experience the essence of Kangaroo Island at Dudley Wines. Sweeping cliff top views surround you as you sample Dudley’s fine Kangaroo Island wines accompanied by gourmet pizzas and platters.

There’s a nature play area with plenty of space for young ones to run around.

Try your hand at “golf across the gully”, an opportunity to practise your golf skills for the young ones and young at heart!

Dudley Wines is run and owned by Jeff and Val Howard, their three children and their families.

The Howard family’s history on Kangaroo Island dates back more than 140 years.

In the 1960s, Jeff, a fourth generation ‘Islander’, purchased a block, known as Porky Flat, on the south coast of the Peninsula, which he gradually turned into a successful merino sheep and cattle farm.

With the collapse of the wool industry in the early 1990s, Jeff

planted vines as an experiment, and made their first red wine in part of the old shearing shed.

They named it “Shearing Shed Red” and it was purely for their own use.

The following year they made their first commercial vintage wine, and Dudley Wines grew from there.

Dudley Wines’ vineyard is in a beautiful valley at Porky Flat.

The vines are dry-grown and thrive in the rich limestone soils.

The fresh Southern Ocean breezes ensure a slow ripening season, leading to enhanced

fruit concentration.

About 30 per cent of the property is still untouched native bushland and it is the isolated nature, and the pristine surrounds of the vineyard that contribute to the unique characteristics of Dudley’s Wines.

Jeff’s son Brodie took over the role of winemaker in 2000.

Being the owner/winemaker for over 20 years has given him the freedom to explore many techniques and develop his own winemaking style.

His range of wines are

diverse, and carefully crafted to capture and emphasise the abundant fruit characteristics presented by the Island’s terroir.

Dudley Wines are proud to produce a 100 per cent Kangaroo Island product, grown and handcrafted just 15km from the cellar door.

It embraces sustainable practices in the vineyard and winery, including the use of animals to control weeds and pests - limiting chemical use, using solar power and no irrigation.

All of the wines are low in sulphur and vegan friendly.

A destination not to be missed on your visit to Kangaroo Island.

Open five days a week - closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays - bookings are recommended.

34 YEARS OF ISLAND HISTORY

MACGILLIVRAY

Larry and Bev Turner founded Emu Ridge in 1991 and since then they have not looked back.

In 1991, the Turner family faced a big question: what should traditional sheep farmers do given a downturn of wool prices?

The couple came up with an answer, not realising that it would lead them to become one of the few remaining commercial eucalyptus oil distilleries in Australia.

“We are extremely proud of our family-owned business and keeping this Aussie industry alive,” Emu Ridge owner Bev Turner said.

Eucalyptus oil was Australia’s first true export overseas, but these days around 90 per cent of the world’s supply comes from countries like China and Brazil.

Today, more than 34 years later, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery, craft gallery, cafe and cellar door have grown to be

one of the most popular tourist attractions on Kangaroo Island. When visiting the unique attraction, they will show you the past and present processes of eucalyptus oil distilling from

a tree endemic to Kangaroo Island, where they produce an essential oil unique to the world.

The business also has a great range of natural products that it has proudly

developed, in addition to supporting many other local producers and artisans in the retail store.

Emu Ridge is proudly the cellar door for Kangaroo Island Ciders, where you can taste and buy the award-winning local apple ciders.

They also have a cafe with three dining areas of your choice to try their delicious breakfast and lunch menu, and the bar has a great range of local beer, wine, spirits and delicious cocktails.

There are guided and selfguided tours, historical relics, a barbecue area, public toilets and more.

Check out the Emu Ridge website to find out the opening hours, which may change from season to season.

Sunset Food and Wine is a modern bistro which overlooks the beautiful American Beach.

It was the first restaurant on Kangaroo Island to be awarded one Chef Hat from the Australian Good Food Guide in 2017.

Sunset Food and Wine reopens mid December 2025.

With access to so many quality local ingredients, chef Jack Ingram works closely with food producers and growers from Kangaroo Island and South Australia, only using what is in season and what is at its very best.

Jack was brought up in Dorset, England – a place of fine food and fantastic produce.

He started working when he was 13 as a kitchen porter.

“My passion for food developed therein as did my desire to grow and mature as a chef. From then I had my training at some of the best Michelin starred restaurants in the UK like Le Champignon

and Lygon Arms Hotel.”

Jack moved to Melbourne in 2010 and worked with Shannon Bennett at the highly acclaimed Vue de monde, finishing up as Chef De Cuisine at Bistro Vue, which is the sister restaurant to the main Vue de monde restaurant.

In 2015 the opportunity came to come to Kangaroo Island

and Southern Ocean Lodge as executive chef.

During this time he made many friends and connections with producers and growers within the island and South Australia and fell in love with the passion and quality produced in this region.

“When the opportunity arose to take over the restaurant, I

knew it was a dream come true to be able to cook and showcase what South Australia has to offer and hopefully help put Kangaroo Island on the map as a food and wine destination it deserves to be.”

21 YEARS; GREAT VINTAGE

Graham and Mary Jones have followed through with their dream of making authentic ciders on Kangaroo Island, beginning planting an apple orchard on their property in 2004, and so 2025 marks the 21st birthday of the orchards.

Why? To be able to make a top quality cider.

In 2012, the pair saw through their dream and officially set up Kangaroo Island Ciders.

Graham has been teaching cider making and making cider with his students for many years as part of the winemaking programs at the University of Adelaide.

Wanting to take his passion for premium quality ciders to the next level, he and Mary planted 30 different cider apple varieties, together with a few dessert apple varieties.

They now have more than 800 trees in their orchards.

Among the orchards you can spot old English varieties, such as Yarlington Mill, Somerset Red Streak, Kingston Black and

Paddlers from KI Dragons, based in American River, together with riders of the Bicycle Users Group (BUG) got together to help pick the apples for the 2025 vintage at Kangaroo Island Ciders. (Supplied)

Golden Harvey.

Planting a vast range of varieties means Kangaroo Island Ciders are able to create many different flavours, with bittersweet and bittersharp apples adding to the complexity of the ciders.

While Graham manages the cider productions, there’s no doubt Kangaroo Island Ciders is a family affair.

Son, Gavin, assists in processing and blending the ciders, while Mary is involved

in maintaining the orchard, organising the apple picking and even designing the labels for the cider - which are based on the coastal views of Kangaroo Island.

This year, the Jones again had the assistance of the KI Dragons, based in American River, together with members of the Bicycle Users Group (BUG) to pick the apples.

The trees were loaded with apples but the lack of water for

irrigation made the apples small and the crop was well down on previous years but the quality was excellent.

“The cider has again turned out to be one of the best we have made - a great vintage,” Graham said.

He was very adventurous, experimenting with themes, media and subject matter, ranging from traditional landscapes, seascapes and buildings to abstract and naive depictions of daily life.

Having always sketched in black and white, the former teacher started painting with acrylic and oil, with numerous solo and shared exhibitions following.

As a result his work is owned in collections worldwide.

WILD CARERS

KANGAROO ISLAND

IF you are planning a visit or are already on KI and your passion is wildlife conservation, consider supporting the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network (KIWN).

KIWN is a volunteer-run notfor-profit wildlife conservation organisation that responds to requests for emergency rescues, and provides direct care for orphaned, injured or displaced wildlife.

It also initiates and supports environmental protection programs, plants trees and shrubs for habitat restoration, builds sanctuary support on private land, and organises specialised carer training and advice.

Visitors are urged to slow down particularly at dawn and dusk because vehicle strike is the main reason wildlife goes into care.

Well-placed roadside “Report Injured Wildlife” signs remind drivers to slow down and to call 1300 KIWILD (1300 549 453) when animals are injured. → To support the work of KIWN consider visiting www.

A SOULFUL SLICE OF ISLAND

PARNDANA

THERE’S a special kind of magic on Kangaroo Island — one that whispers through the gums, hums with the pulse of the land, and finds its heartbeat in places like Eleanor Downs.

Nestled deep in the island’s heartland, Eleanor Downs is far more than a working farm - it’s a living, breathing story of heritage, hospitality, and heart.

Originally one of the island’s early soldier settler farms, its legacy has been lovingly reimagined by Nathan Trethewey and Olivia Baker.

Today, it’s a place where guests aren’t just visitors — they’re welcomed like family.

And while the land itself rolls wide and open with Angus cattle, Merino sheep, stock horses, and a delightfully round pet bull named Gary, what sets Eleanor Downs apart is its soul.

More Than a Farm — A Way of Life

This isn’t agri-tourism dressed up for the city crowd.

Eleanor Downs offers an unfiltered, immersive experience — a chance to feel the grit, grace, and grounding of real farm life.

Whether you’re waking up to misty paddocks in a cozy farmstay, taking a scenic flight or lending a hand during a farm tour, every moment invites you into the rhythm of the land.

At its heart is The Shearing Shed, a space that bridges tradition and transformation.

Once echoing with the sounds of wool being thrown across the table, it now hums with music, conversation, and community.

The shed has become a cultural beacon, hosting everything from arts performances and rural retreats to equestrian events and wellness weekends.

And now, it also houses something refreshingly unexpected: Grasshopper Brewing - Kangaroo Island’s latest craft beer venture.

Under twinkling lights and the warmth of good company, long-table dinners here are less about the food, though it’s exceptional, and more about the spirit.

This is where stories are swapped, music drifts into the night, and strangers become old friends.

Where Heritage Meets Design

Just down the road in the small town of Parndana - meaning “Place of Little Gums” - creativity takes on a different form. Enter Pilgrim by Eleanor Downs, a boutique that defies the ordinary.

This thoughtfully curated space is part atelier, part time capsule, and entirely charming. Inside, vintage French antiques sit beside artisan homewares, sustainable fashion, and handcrafted goods - many made right here on the island. It’s the kind of place where every object has a story, and every purchase feels like a keepsake.

But Pilgrim isn’t just a shopit’s an experience.

Pop next door to the Parndana laundromat, tickle the keys of the town’s public piano, or pull up a seat with a Grasshopper brew in hand.

Yes, the beer is brewed in the humble shed just out back - a quiet rebellion against flashy trends and a celebration of small-scale, heart-driven craftsmanship.

A Celebration of Island Spirit Together, Eleanor Downs and Pilgrim offer something rare in today’s fast-moving world — the invitation to slow down. To

reconnect. To savour. To listen to the land and the stories it carries.

This is Kangaroo Island at its most authentic — unpretentious, quietly creative, and deeply rooted in place.

Whether you’re feeding

livestock at dawn or browsing shelves filled with soulful design, one thing is certain: you’ll leave feeling fuller than when you arrived.

Because places like this don’t just stay with you — they change you.

Island Beehive — 59 Playford Highway Kingscote, Kangaroo Island kangarooislandbeeco.com.au

Is this the rarest honey on earth?

To most people honey is just another spread on the supermarket shelf, nestled somewhere between the jams and peanut butter. But not this honey.

For a start, this honey comes from Kangaroo Island, a pristine, GM free, bee sanctuary 13 kilometres off the coast of South Australia.

Kangaroo Island is the oldest bee sanctuary in the world and home to the purest Ligurian bees on Earth. Renowned for their gentle nature, they were brought to the island in the 1880s, protected by a special act of parliament in 1885 and have been fortunate to avoid most of the diseases and contaminants that have affected other bees around the world.

This particular variety of honey was collected by the bees in 2019 from flowering gum trees called Eucalyptus Remota that only grow in one location on the planet: the western end of Kangaroo Island. But if that wasn’t special enough, nearly all these trees were destroyed by the bushfires on the island in 2020 and will now take up to 7 years to fully regenerate.

You won’t find this honey in a single supermarket, or store, anywhere in the world. There is simply not enough to go around. The limited quantity of jars have

been hand packed on Kangaroo Island and they are only available in 300 gram numbered jars from one website, ours.

As you can imagine, this honey has an authentic, pure, beautiful flavour. But taste isn’t the only benefit provided by these unique bees. They also make propolis, a natural substance shown in University of Sydney research to be effective in the treatment of human cancer cells. Further investigation is being undertaken to determine the therapeutic benefits.

By purchasing this honey, you will also be helping to save the bees of Kangaroo Island. Every jar of Eucalyptus Remota honey purchased contributes $2 to the Kangaroo Island Bee Fund, a sub-fund of Australian Communities Foundation (administered in SA by Foundation SA).

This honey is a rare and special treat, to be enjoyed, shared, or sent as a unique gift to friends and family around the world. Or you may choose to just keep it. Honey is the only food that doesn’t need or have an expiry date. Edible honey was found in Egyptian tombs.

So, while honey lasts forever, this one will disappear very quickly.

KI’S WORKING ART STUDIO

Shoal Bay Studio is a working studio that produces and presents unique handcrafted jewellery, paintings, art prints, photographic prints, pottery, as well as other object d’art and crafts.

Phillipa Holden was born in South Africa in the late 60s:

“My parents were originally from England and there were artists, potters and musicians back through the generations on both sides of the family.

Mom herself was a potter, painter and art teacher, and so I grew up with the earthy smell of clay around me and learning to make things.

I was fascinated with photography all through my early years, and then went on to learn silversmithing in my early 20s.

Although I pursued a career in science, working as an ecologist and environmental

consultant for over 20 years, my travels both for work and pleasure mean that I have visited some of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the planet - a photographer’s delight and nature inspiration for creation.

We moved to KI at the start of 2014 and have found it a most pretty and peaceful place to live with a friendly community.

I built my studio and after my mom’s passing and receiving some of her materials and equipment.

And from there came the idea to open to the public so that I have an outlet for my creative pursuits and allow others into a working studio.

FALSE CAPE

Tasting Notes

‘The Captain’ refers to Captain Matthew Flinders who chartered much of the Australian coastline before stumbling across Kangaroo Island in 1802 and named it after the large number of a particular marsupial he saw hopping about (any guesses!?).

Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on Kangaroo Island thanks to the slow even ripening influenced by the cooling sea breezes coupled with our ancient terra rossa soils, producing wines of great character but also finesse. Exhibiting characters of blackcurrant and mulberry with wonderful depth of fruit, subtle oak and an elegant structure, with careful cellaring this wine will age gracefully over the next 8-10 years.

FEAST! ON AGAIN AT FIG TREE

MIDDLE RIVER

After a winter break, The Fig Tree KI will reopen this November for Feast! Vol. 2, the second season of its long lunch series.

Nestled among the hills and sand dunes of Kangaroo Island’s north coast and shaded by a century-old fig tree, the restaurant has become known for pairing a sense of history with a contemporary island dining experience.

Chef-owner John Stamatakis is eager to welcome guests back following the success of last summer’s new direction.

His focus remains on showcasing the island’s producers - farmers, fishers, winemakers, and foragersthrough a Mediterranean-inspired menu that reflects the generosity of the region.

“For me, it’s about more than just food on a plate,” he says.

“It’s about celebrating the people and the places that make Kangaroo Island so special.”

Accessibility is an important part of that vision.

Despite rising costs across

the industry, ticket prices will remain unchanged from last season, with local residents continuing to receive a 10 per cent discount.

For the first time, the restaurant will also open on Sundays, giving more people the chance to enjoy the long lunches beneath the fig tree.

This summer also sees the launch of La Baracca, a

“pop-up within a pop-up.”

From December, the property’s rustic shearing shed will host casual Wednesday night dinners, offering a relaxed alternative to the signature long lunch series.

Think charcoal grilled skewers, neapolitan style pizza and cocktails!

The Fig Tree’s long lunches will run Wednesday to

Sunday from November 12 to April 12, with extended dates across Christmas and New Year.

With its blend of local produce, coastal lifestyle, and welcoming atmosphere, The Fig Tree KI is set to remain one of Kangaroo Island’s standout dining experiences this summer.

KI FOOD, WINE & ART BUSINESS DIRECTORY

CRACKING FAMILY BUSINESS

HAINES

FRYAR’S Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs is a family owned-and-operated business situated on Kangaroo Island’s pristine farming land, producing pastured, free range eggs.

Tom and Fiona Fryar established the business in 1992, with just 400 hens on 40 hectares of land.

Today, the couple and their sons, Thomas and Jason and their wives Kirby and Bonnie, run full-beaked true free range hens over their 2000-hectare farm and employ over 25 people.

The hens live in 80 individual custom built mobile sheds on the farm, which are designed so that the hens are never locked in and are continuously free to roam as they please.

The mobile sheds provide roosting rails, nest boxes and shelter for the hens.

The hens’ welfare is of the utmost importance to the Fryar family, which is why they run them at no more than 190 hens per hectare.

The mobile sheds are placed on fresh pasture giving the hens plenty of space to scratch and peck at seeds, grass and insects.

The hens’ nutrition is also

enhanced by a mixture of grains that are grown, harvested and crushed all on the farm.

Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs have maremma stock guardian dogs that live with the hens.

The dogs love living out with the hens and do a brilliant job guarding them from any predators, such as eagles and feral cats.

Eggs are collected daily and stored in a cool room to ensure they are a product of excellent freshness and quality.

The eggs are then graded and packed on the farm.

Each week, the eggs are sold and transported in refrigerated

transport to stores and outlets on Kangaroo Island, Adelaide, regional South Australia, Melbourne, Sydney.

Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs is a growing business, which the Fryar family recognise would not be where it is today without its wonderful staff members.

The team consists of 25 employees from the people who collect the eggs, tend to the dogs’ and hens’ needs, work in the egg-processing facility, feed the birds, perform maintenance and farm duties around the farm and look after the egg sales.

Every team member is vital to the business and is the reason KI Free Range Eggs are able to

produce such a high-quality product.

The business is externally audited so customers can be assured that the pastured free range hens are true free range.

KI Free Range Eggs is certified by Humane Choice and PROOF (Pasture Raised On Open Fields).

It is also accredited under the Primary Industry and Regions SA Egg Food Safety Scheme and audited by Biosecurity SA against the National Egg Food Safety Standard.

The business has significantly grown over the years and the Fryar family are excited to see where it is heading in future.

The Fryar Family thanked its loyal customers for supporting them over the years, and said they appreciate your business and wouldn’t be where they are today without you.
