Woolies set for Port By MICHELLE HERBISON WOOLWORTHS plans to build a supermarket at Portarlington, according to a tender notice published this week. The tender identified 6-8 Brown St as the site for the store. Construction Engineering Australia’s Luke Byrne said his company was seeking subcontractors for a “Portarlington Woolworths base-build”. “We haven’t won it yet we’re tendering against a couple of others,” Mr Byrne said. “Woolworths are apparently doing their own fit-out, so we’ll build the box then they’ll put ev-

February tipped for start on site dependent last month that he hoped development could start this year. Ward councillor Lindsay Ellis hoped Woolworths would encourage residents to shop locally but the town still “desperately needed” a petrol station. “It horrifies me to think of the amount of money that goes out of the town when people go out to shop and get petrol,” Mr Ellis said. Portarlington Business and Tourism Association president John Rae was “delighted”

erything inside it.” Mr Byrne expected construction to begin in February and take four or five months. “I think they’re planning on starting it this side of Christmas but, realistically, I’d say the start of February.” The Independent reported in April that a “tough economic climate” had delayed supermarket plans approved in 2010 for the 1600-square-metre site. Goldstrike Development’s Andrew Liddell told the In-

the vacant development block would host a new business. “It’s really good for the town to have a larger-style supermarket and if it’s Woolworths that would be an asset to the town. It will enable people to do their regular shopping here and give them a reason not to go to Drysdale.” Mr Rae said Woolworths’ large range of goods at competitive prices would assist the town’s ageing population. Portarlington IGA and Williamson’s Licensed Supermar-

ket owner Tim Lin called Woolworths a “monster operation” that would force him to reconsider his business structures. “We have to be prepared for everything to change in the market. Nobody will be sympathetic but we will find a way to do business,” he said. Mr Lin thought Woolworths’ trade in the area would remain mostly unchanged because many Portarlington residents already shopped at the chain’s Drysdale store. “It’s a public company, so they don’t worry about the individual site’s profit – they worry about market share,” he said.

THE LEADERS of Victoria and Geelong have thrown their weight behind a new campaign to support local retailers. Premier Ted Baillieu and Mayor Keith Fagg both praised Shop Local Geelong for encouraging shoppers to spend locally, creating jobs. “Good local business deserves strong local support and that’s what Shop Local Geelong is all about,” Mr Baillieu said. “Running a small business is always challenging and external economic challenges such as the high Australian dollar and online shopping are making the task even tougher for our local businesses. “By working together, government, businesses, communities and local media can help our local businesses to prosper.” Cr Fagg called Shop Local Geelong “a very positive initiative” “The more money people spend in Geelong, the more jobs for local people and investment back into our city,” he said. “With Christmas coming up, now is a great time to shop locally and show your support for our local businesses. The City is proud to support the Shop Local campaign and I urge everyone to get behind it.” The campaign, an initiative of the Independent, promotes the benefits of shopping locally rather than online or elsewhere. Shop Local includes a monthly customer service award, offering the winning retailer a $1000 advertising package covering the Independent and its EasyFinder business directory. Shoppers can nominate retailers by explaining in 50 words or less why they deserve to win and sending the entry to: Shop Local Geelong, PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220; editorial@geelongindependent.com.au; or fax 5249 6799.
