Making history

By Tanya Faulkner Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey is gearing up the centre for its 25th birthday celebrations, and are encouraging locals and visitors alike to help them prepare.

Burrinja has a long-standing connection with the community of Upwey, dating back to the 1960s when the building was built to host the old Sherbrooke Shire Council.

CEO and creative director Gareth Harte said the community has been behind the cultural centre since the very beginning, and fought for its existence.

“During the amalgamations in the 1990s, the building was deemed unnecessary by the old Sherbrooke Shire Council, and they tried to sell it commercially.

“The community at the time were very opposed, and wanted to have an arts centre - so that happened and gave it the potential to be a thriving cultural hub in Upwey,” they said.

It was in 1998 that Burrinja Cultural Centre came to fruition, which curator and collections manager JD Mittmann was a lengthy process.

“In March 1998 we had the official opening of the arts centre, then in July - when it was the Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre - it became incorporated, and on November 28th and 29th is when it officially became Burrinja,” he said.

Burrinja has stood true to the community over the past 25 years, which Harte said is still their way of operating today.

“There were three aims made clear in the first annual report of 1998, which was to pro-

The history of Burrinja tells a tale of friendship and passion in Upwey, by a community that Harte said fought “loud and proud” for the centre.

“Neil and Lin Onus both fought with the community to establish the cultural centre, but Lin died just before the decision was made

to do so.

“The name ‘Burrinja’ was gifted by Lin’s family for the centre,” they said.

‘Burrinja’ is said to have been Lin’s Yorta Yorta nickname meaning ‘star’.

IN BRIEF Washaway in Upper Ferntree Gully CFA crews responded to a washaway as a result of an incident on Friday 13 October in Upper Ferntree Gully.

A CFA spokesperson said Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were on scene at Burwood Highway. Crews discovered a two motor vehicle nose to tail incident. One passenger was in the hands of Ambulance Victoria.

The CFA spokesperson said the incident was deemed under control at 4:43pm and safe at 5:11pm.

Tobacco store targeted A Scoresby tobacco shop has been targeted in an early morning break-in on Friday 13 October, sparking fears of another tobacco shop fire.

But police have confirmed the smoke seen coming from the business was from a security system, and there was no fire.

Knox crime investigation unit detectives are investigating a burglary at the Darryl St store early on Friday morning. Police believe offenders forced entry into the business about 5.30am. The CFA responded to a vehicle incident in Cockatoo on Tuesday 17 October, a CFA spokesperson has confirmed. Two CFA units from Cockatoo attended the scene at Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and Brisbanes Road at around 3.23pm. “The incident was under control at 3.36pm and safe at 4.04pm,” the spokesperson said.

Mother and child rescued by CFA

By Tanya Faulkner A mother and her young child had to be rescued by CFA members after spending a night stuck down a sharp embankment in The Patch.

Monbulk CFA, alongside Kallista-The Patch and Wandin crews, were called out to make the rescue on the morning of Monday 16 October after a local resident heard the mother’s calls for help.

She and the child fell while on evening walk and she did not have a mobile phone with which to raise the alarm.

Monbulk CFA second lieutenant Glenn Hickingbotham said they fell down a sharp, but shallow embankment and were stuck there overnight as the mother received a minor wrist injury in the fall and they could not climb back up.

“The mother did not have a mobile phone on her, and managed to raise the alarm by calling out for help and being heard by a neighbour over the road who called 000,” he said.

“It’s important to have a mobile phone on you, wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and let someone know where you are going and how long for. Even a short local walk can still end in injury where you need assistance.

“Don’t underestimate what could happen,” he said.

Beaumaris abuse inquiry hearings begin Public hearings for an inquiry into historical child sexual abuse at 24 Victorian Government schools have begun.

The Board of Inquiry will hear from victim-survivors who experienced abuse by staff at Beaumaris Primary School in the 1960s and 1970s.

Inquiry chair Kathleen Foley SC will also hear evidence from victim-survivors from other schools where those staff members were employed.

The first week of hearings will take place

from Monday 23 October-Thursday 26 October.

Among the investigated primary schools are Beaumaris, Beaconsfield Upper, Bunyip, Cranbourne, Dandenong North, Dandenong West, Drouin South and Emerald.

The first week of public hearings will focus on understanding the effects of historical child sexual abuse in government schools, the Board of Inquiry stated.

“The hearings will be an opportunity for victim-survivors and their families, friends and supporters to have their experiences publicly recorded and acknowledged.”

An 18-year-old male probationary driver was detected speeding in the Maroondah Hwy service lane, Croydon North at 113 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. His vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days at a cost of $925 and he will be charged on summons with speeding and driving at a dangerous speed.

Woodchipper theft Belgrave police are investigating the theft of a woodchipper in Emerald on Saturday 21 October. Around four to five unknown offenders arrived at a premises on Butterfield Road in a white tipper truck and a black Toyota Landcruiser about 3pm, a Victoria Police spokesperson told the Star Mail.

“The offenders cut through the lock and chain linking the gates to gain access to the property,” the spokesperson said. “It’s believed the offenders have reversed up to a woodchipper, cutting the lock and hitching it to their vehicle.

The offenders dumped a load of concrete from the tipper truck before attempting to steal an excavator when they were disturbed.”

The offenders then fled the scene in both vehicles.

Owner of Cut & Catch Tree Services, Matthew Slockwitch, was devastated by the theft. “It’s a huge loss for us and has made us have to reschedule jobs,” he said.

Mr Slockwitch has owned the business for the past 20 years. The woodchipper is a Bandit 65 and valued at $20,000, the Victoria Police spokesperson said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www. crimestoppervic.com.au.

High Court rejects EV tax

By Mikayla van Loon, with AAP The Australian High Court has ruled Victoria’s electric vehicle (EV) tax is ‘unconstitutional’ in what has been noted as a landmark decision.

EV drivers Chris Vanderstock and Kathleen Davies took the State to court in September 2021 after the introduction of the 2.3 to 2.8 cent tax per kilometre travelled by Zero and Low-Emission Vehicles (ZLEVs).

On Wednesday 18 October the decision was handed down that under constitutional law, states cannot charge what is in essence an excise on EVs. Mount Evelyn EV owner Tony Stevenson said “it’s a fair judgment” but is not without its challenges now for the Victorian government.

“The government will need to reassess its road taxes to provide safe roads for drivers,” he said.

While Mr Stevenson was never opposed to paying the tax for his use of an EV, he said it wasn’t fairly done.

“It was inequitable that someone who was driving on NSW roads still had to pay per kilometre,” he said.

“It will cause a challenge going forward as the fuel excise will be reduced as more people take up electric vehicles.”

Incentive for Victorian’s to buy an EV had been somewhat quashed by the imposed tax, the cost of EVs as a luxury vehicle and cutting the $3000 subsidy in the May budget.

Ms Davies said she was “thrilled by [the] judgement” and hoped it steered Victoria in the right direction after it “went out alone in taxing electric vehicles, and recently scrapped its electric vehicle subsidy”.

“Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world on electric vehicle uptake,” she said.

“Now is not the time to be taxing electric vehicles - it’s the time to be doing everything we can to encourage people to make the switch to

The Electric Vehicle Council’s (EVC) State of EVs report released in July 2023 showed the uptake of EVs in Victoria sits at 8.5 per cent within the vehicle market.

EVC chief executive Behyad Jafari said the High Court’s decision will provide the Federal government an opportunity to introduce a fair levy across the board.

“There is nothing inherently wrong with road user charges but they should never be calibrated to discourage the take up of electric vehicles,” Mr Jafari said.

“The electric vehicle industry warned the Victorian Government this policy was muddleheaded years ago, and the offer has always been

on the table to work with the state on a more sensible approach.

“Any road user charge scheme should be national and we now look forward to working with the Federal government on sensible road funding reform, without singling out drivers who are trying to do the right thing.”

Equity Generation Lawyers senior associate David Hertzberg, who represented Ms Davies and Mr Vanderstock in court, called the ruling “a landmark constitutional decision”. “[The] judgement means that Victoria’s electric vehicle tax is invalid. It also sets a precedent which will likely prevent other States from implementing similar legislation,” he said.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS The outcome is expected to affect more than just Victorian drivers as attorneys-general for all states and territories intervened to argue for the right to tax road users, with NSW and WA announcing plans to do so in 2027.

Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said he would seek legal advice on whether electric vehicle drivers were entitled to a refund.

“You’d have to say it’s clearly a very contentious matter,” he told reporters at the state parliament.

“It was a fair charge. It was a charge that meant that everybody paid their share of the cost to the road network.”

What’s behind the vote?

By Tanya Faulkner The votes are in and a decision has been made on the first Australian referendum since 1999.

Despite The Voice referendum returning an overall ‘No’ vote, with 61 per cent of Australians voting No to the altering of the constitution to create a voice to parliament to represent Indigenous communities, several regions had other results at the end of polling day.

Across the Casey electorate, the No’s only just held the majority, with only 58 per cent of locals making up the majority, and a close 42 per cent voting yes.

However, several polls said otherwise, with an overwhelming majority of Knox polls proving a majority in acceptance of The Voice.

From the polling results in the Knox municipality, Boronia and Rowville were the only locations turning a ‘No’ majority.

Boronia had the biggest turnout of voters in the municipality, with the results favouring the no’s 1997 to the yes’s 1846 votes.

In the Yarra Ranges, Tecoma had the greatest count in favour of The Voice, with 1,154 votes for The Voice versus only 639 against.

Most other polls returned similar results, seeing a vast majority of Hills residents actually voting in favour of the change.

Further in the Dandenong Ranges, however, the overall result was vastly different to that of the foothills, with the No majority much more prominent across the polls.

Healesville voters flocked to the polls over referendum weekend, with the No’s holding a strong majority over the Yes vote - 2,854 to 2,256 respectively.

The polls in Menzies Creek, Mount Dandenong, and Warburton were the only polls to show a Yes majority, the rest of Upper Yarra voting against the change.

Across the Ranges, Lilydale provided the greatest polling numbers, with 4,350 yes votes trampled by the 9,750 who voted against, showing almost a 50 per cent divide.

For one local woman, the results are ‘devastating’.

Hills Walking Together founder Shakti McLaren said she feels “completely disregarded as an educated person who understands Australia and First Nations issues”.

“I spent four days after the referendum with some elders in GunaiKurnai country in East Gippsland.

“One of the leaders, Rob, said they ‘didn’t expect a yes, we never get a yes, we always get a no’.

“I’m not sure if every First Nations person feels that way, but they never do expect a yes.

“As a white privileged woman, I expect countrymen to do their research and find out what is true - 60 per cent did not bother to find out what is true,” she said.

While Ms McLaren understood that some people would have been very conflicted when casting their vote, she felt the matter was very simple.

“It was simply First Nations people to nonFirst Nations people asking for a sentence to recognise their voice in the constitution,” she said.

Monbulk MP Daniela de Martino said her love and thoughts go out to every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander who sought Constitutional recognition and a voice to parliament.

“Aboriginal friends and colleagues of mine have been deeply distressed and devastated by the result.

“Although the results from the AEC are yet to be finalised, we can see a strong support for the referendum across the electorate of Monbulk.

“As the local member, it is heartening to see that across the hills and foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, collectively we voted ‘Yes’.

“As a state, we’ll keep working towards a stronger, fairer future for Aboriginal Victorians - led by, shaped by and driven by Aboriginal Victorians,” she said.

Magnitude 5.0 quake A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was felt across Melbourne in the early hours of Sunday 22 October.

The quake’s epicentre was near Colac, and shook the southwest of the state at around 2am at a reported depth of seven kilometres. A 3.6 magnitude after-shock at a depth of 10 kilometres was then recorded at 5.44am with an epicentre near Apollo Bay. According to Geoscience Australia, there were 8315 ‘felt reports’ after the incident.

Upwey resident Jess Vorherr told the Star Mail her house shook and windows rattled for a few seconds just after 2am. “It was certainly nothing like the quake during the Melbourne lockdown but I certainly knew that we were having an earthquake,” Ms Vorherr said. “My 10 year old daughter was asleep next to me and she didn’t wake up. Facebook commenter Bernadette Saulenier said she heard some rumbling before feeling the quake in Monbulk.

“I attributed [the rumbling] to a storm but then it felt like an army of possums on the roof again,” she wrote. “I had felt dizzy all day on Saturday, which is my usual feeling before Earth tremors.”

According to Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES), there have been a couple of calls to the service on 132-500 for emergency assistance but only minor damage reported and no injuries. It is the second tremor felt by Victorians in the past seven days, with a small quake on Wednesday 18 October centred in Healesville.

by Greens leader Adam Bandt.

Out of the 1860 people who cast their vote there, only 129 - or seven per cent - voted no, with a whopping 93 per cent voting Yes in the area.

Overall, Victoria was the most divided state overall when it came to the final decision, showing only a 10 per cent difference between the no and the yes voters, 55 per cent to 45 per cent respectively.

The greatest split came out of Queensland, with 69 per cent of residents voting against The Voice, and only 39 per cent in favour.

Every other state had at least a 60 per cent majority in favour of the No vote.

The Federal government, who have returned for a sitting week in Canberra following The Voice, will now have to face questions on how it plans to approach Indigenous affairs without the overarching policy of the Voice being implemented.

Business risk ranking falls The Yarra Ranges has dropped in its ranking of business confidence according to the latest data from CreditorWatch.

Over the three month period from June to September, the municipality fell six spots in the business risk index (BRI) figures released on Wednesday 18 October.

Despite dropping from third to ninth, the Yarra Ranges still rounded out the top 10 best performing regions with over 5000 registered businesses in the country, with Knox taking out 10th place.

It is however, a far cry from this time last year with the data placing the region in top position of having the lowest risk of insolvency.

The BRI for the Yarra Ranges has decreased from 73.8 in June to 68.1 for September, with the default rate now sitting at 4.26 per cent.

Analysts are continuing to see an upward trend in payment defaults, with a year-on-year increase of 57 per cent and is a key indicator of business failure.

CreditorWatch CEO Patrick Coghlan said easing inflation is a positive sign for business activity going into 2024 but conditions remain challenging.

“Rents, energy prices and the cost of services are keeping the heat in inflation but it’s encouraging to see some of the other drivers normalising,” he said.

“However, our forecast is still for the business failure rate to increase over the next 12 months.”

The data has also shown an ebb in business-to-business invoicing with an average 30 per cent reduction in the value of invoices, noted as being well below the pre-Covid levels.

Although a slight improvement was made between August to September, CreditorWatch said a reversal in this downward trend is a long way off and is influenced by a low consumer trend, a concerning combination in a high inflation environment.

sensitive to drops in consumer spending, are likely to remain subdued until at least mid 2024, when cuts to the cash rate are forecast.

The food and beverage industry still remains at the highest risk of payment defaults, followed by transport, postal and warehousing.

Old lessons from Darwin paid off during Hills storms

By Mikayla van Loon Julia Hall instinctively drew on her experiences of living through cyclone season in the Northern Territory when the Dandenong storms of 2021 hit.

As soon as the sounds of the wind intensified, she immediately began dragging bed mattresses into the living room to protect her family inside the home.

“That sound, I remember thinking ‘we’re in a cyclone’. That’s what it was like. I had never really heard anything like that in Victoria. That’s the wind sound you hear in Darwin when a cyclone is around,” Julia said.

Living through not one but two storm events just a month apart from each other during 2021 was a learning curve for Julia and her family.

Having lived in the Dandenong Ranges for 12 years, Julia said she’d experienced storms before but nothing like the night of 9 June.

“We didn’t really think about it. You get a lot of storms in the hills, you get a lot of warnings, but we have never worried about a normal storm. The big danger in the hills that you always think about is fire,” she said.

“So we were very well prepared for a fire warning and for what to do. We had our fire plan to put in place if a fire was going to come through but it never crossed our mind that a storm could cause that much damage, so it wasn’t even on our radar.

“It was only after that storm on the night of the ninth of June that it made us realise, ‘Wow, we actually need to be much better prepared’ because we just were not ready.”

The strength of the wind pushed furniture

Julia Hall and her family were trapped inside their home twice over June and July of 2021.

Julie recalls walking out into a state of complete destruction and chaos. Power and internet had been disconnected, trees were blocking the driveway and the road and the thought of ‘what now’ sunk in.

She made her first ever call to the SES when she finally got two bars of phone reception. Julia said she learned a valuable lesson of the need to share critical information with emergency crews “I got through to the SES and they said: ‘Are you warm? And is anybody hurt?’ And I said: ‘No we’re fine, we’ve got a generator, and we’ve got a fire and we’ve got gas cooking, so we’re OK’. And they said: ‘OK, well, we need to prioritise other people that are in danger.’

“I was like: ‘Yep, no problem’ and so they had us on the list, but we weren’t a priority.

And that was where I learned I needed to give them the whole story because had they

known my husband had just had a heart attack a few months earlier and it was important for us to be able to get in and out of our driveway, we would have been prioritised.

“But instead we had two weeks of driving over powerlines because that was our only way of getting in and out of our driveway.

The road was blocked for about four days. So that’s a really big risk that I was not prepared to take again.”

When it did happen again in July, Julia knew the process and was better equipped to ask for what she needed.

“I learned my lesson from the first storm not to be shy about letting them know our situation. So probably about 7.30 in the morning, I rang the SES and I let them know we’ve had a massive tree down across the driveway and we’ve lost our NBN,” she said.

“I said: ‘My husband had a heart attack in February and we really do need to be able to get in and out of our driveway’.

“Just the fact that I let them know about our situation with Wayne and his heart, by three o’clock in the afternoon that tree was cleaned up and our driveway was open. They literally never got to us in the first storm.”

Julia said had the SES prompted her with more questions in the first storm event in June, it probably would have been a different conversation.

“Had they said to me: ‘Have you got anybody in your house that has a life threatening condition?’ That would have triggered for me: ‘Oh, yes, I do. My husband had a heart attack in February, he has a sensitive heart and he’s still in recovery, getting used to his medication’.

“That would have totally changed the conversation but instead their questions are: Is everybody safe? Yeah. Is everybody warm?

Yeah. Do you have a generator? Yeah. Then you’re fine.”

Julia said being prompted to share health concerns during an emergency call would create less stress and worry for people in similar situations.

“It’s a behavioural thing. As humans, we don’t want to put ourselves before others. So in a storm like that, my head went: ‘There’s clearly going to be people worse off than us, we haven’t got a tree on our house, we’re alive and I just want my driveway cleared’.

“But Hills people, I think, we don’t want to be a bother and as a consequence, we also maybe don’t always get the help we need as quickly as we need it. For some elderly people it was like seven days before anybody got to them, sometimes longer.”

Moving forward, Julia said the opportunity to ask more questions of people who call for help, whether it be to Yarra Ranges Council, SES, CFA or other services would hopefully improve the outcomes for all.

While room to learn and grow from the storm events of 2021, Julia said she is extremely grateful to have volunteer organisations like the SES and CFA to provide support in disasters of every kind.

“I was so impressed with the SES response overall, and also their handling and management, as well as the CFA. “We’re really lucky to have that and so whatever support they need, we should be giving it to them.”

‘Compound natural hazard’ In mid-2021, the Dandenong Ranges experienced storms and localised flooding in the middle of Covid-19 lockdowns. For many Hills communities and their residents, the impacts of the storms were catastrophic, and are still being felt today.

The Dandenong Ranges are one of a growing list of places in Australia experiencing disasters – but also one of the few places that has experienced what is known as ‘compound natural hazards’.

“We usually think of natural disasters as separate, one-off events,” natural hazard researcher Dr Gabi Mocatta from Deakin University, who is leading a team researching the storms, said.

“But there’s a growing realisation that many places in Australia are experiencing one or more hazards at the same time, or closely following each other.”

The 2021 Ranges storms in themselves were a significant event. The fact that they occurred during Covid – and one of the world’s longest lockdowns – made the aftermath worse.

The storms’ impacts, including trees down,

STORM TALK property damage, road access blocked, power outages and local flooding all compounded each other, making the disaster more severe.

“In our changing climate we are seeing compound natural hazards become more frequent in Australia and around the world,” Dr Mocatta said.

“Because the overlapping impacts of compound hazards can be so much more severe than when hazards happen separately, lots of research is now going into how to better understand compound hazards and how to prepare for them.”

STORM TALK: Learning better communication from natural disasters The project ‘Awareness, education and communication for compound natural hazards’ is conducted by Deakin University & Natural Hazards Research Australia, with support of the Ranges Trader Star Mail.

Compound hazards look different everywhere – with ‘cascading impacts’ that can be both natural and manmade. Overseas examples include the 2011 earthquake in Japan that led to a tsunami, and then nuclear disaster when the tsunami wave flooded the Fukushima plant.

In Australia, the New South Wales town of Tenterfield experienced years of drought, followed by the Black Summer bushfires and then flooding which led to water contamination.

In the Dandenongs, it was the 2021 storms and flooding, occurring in the middle of Covid.

“Compound hazards are different from the single disasters we might have experienced more in the past,” says Nicola Moore from Natural Hazards Research Australia, which is supporting the research in the Dandenong Ranges.

“This means we need to find new ways to boost awareness, preparation, emergency response and recovery.”

Insurance costs skyrocket

By Tyler Wright After two of Rose Ryan-Jones’ friends lost their homes due to fire in the space of 12 months, she decided to check her insurance policy.

Approaching the 2023/2024 bushfire season, what the Healesville local came across was overwhelming; with quotes from her insurance company and the Insurance Council of Australia estimating it would cost around $800 a month to cover home and contents.

“The quote was 977,000 to rebuild my house and my insurers’ quote through their calculator wasn’t too dissimilar, it was 947,000,” Ms RyanJones said.

“It just blows my mind, it’s just so much money.

“It just changes everything... it’s actually really overwhelming to even contemplate being able to pay the insurance; you’ve got insurance [and] you’ve got interest rates through the roof.”

Ms Ryan-Jones and her husband are now paying over $500 a month for home and contents insurance for their 1970s standard build, and are underinsured - simply because they can not afford to pay the quoted amount.

“We had to do it because I know two people that have lost everything,” Ms Ryan-Jones said.

“I know people that have lost their homes and I’m watching what they’re now going through. Your house burns down, you lose all these things and then the reality is your insurer puts you into an Airbnb or a hotel and you wake up the next morning you think ‘I don’t have deodarant, underpants, socks, any other shoes. I have whatever’s on me at that moment.’”

According to Professor Michael Sherris from the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies at University of New South Wales Business - bushfires are becoming “more prevalent”.

But at the same time, high insurance costs are posing a major challenge for Australians, with insurance giants QBE and Suncorp both forecasting home insurances to increase by 10 per cent to cover insurance claims as a result of the rising number of natural disasters.

“With increased temperatures, this is something that is going to be more significant over coming years. We know that it is going to be hotter, drier, and bushfires will unfortunately become more common,” Professor Sherris said.

“While most insurance companies should pay out, there are some issues and challenges that result in policyholders being underinsured or not insured at all. “The current cost-of-living crisis is not helping.”

Fire damage is normally included in home insurance, but people are encouraged to know what they are covered for and if their home insurance is up-to-date and reflects the cost of a new rebuild.

“As bushfires are becoming more prevalent, the BAL for properties is becoming higher, which results in higher home insurance costs.

This is a factor that insurance companies use to assess home insurance,” Prof Sherris said.

The suburbs of Mount Evelyn and Montrose have some of the highest risk according to the Climate Council’s Climate Risk Map of Australia, with 99.95 per cent and 96.8 per cent of properties respectively at risk.

Mooroolbark, Kilsyth and Croydon still ranked in the high risk category but with percentages in the 30s. Lilydale wasn’t far behind with a lower risk of 29.34 per cent of properties.

In the Dandenong Ranges, every property in the towns of Selby, Sherbrooke, Emer-

ald, Avonsleigh, Ferny Creek, Upwey, Olinda, Mount Dandenong and The Patch is classified as at a high risk of experiencing climate influenced hazards, according to the Climate Council’s Climate Risk Map of Australia.

Cockatoo was close behind with 99.89 per cent of properties at high risk in the town, a number on par with Kallista, and Monbulk following at 98.87 per cent. Over 90 per cent of homes in Gembrook and Silvan are also at high risk.

In Healesville, over 67 per cent of properties are at high risk, while 100 per cent of properties in the neighbouring towns of Warburton and Don Valley are at high risk.

Insurance Council of Australia acting CEO Kylie Macfarlane said the ICA was urging all property owners, especially those in high-risk areas, to ensure they have adequate insurance to cover the cost of any potential disaster.

“While not all insurers enact coverage embargoes during bushfires or when an area is at risk, property owners must not gamble on their insurance protection,” she said.

“We want communities to be better pre-

pared, particularly those that remain vulnerable and are still recovering from the damage and destruction of past catastrophic events.”

Locals are advised to use the following steps as a guide to bushfire preparation: Inspect your property and take practical steps to reduce risk such as cleaning your gutters, keeping lawns and gardens maintained and cleaning up green waste items around the property. Use a building and contents insurance calculator to ensure your insurance cover adequately covers estimated costs to repair, rebuild or replace home and contents, vehicles and any outbuildings on your property in event of a disaster. Prepare a room-by-room inventory of the contents of your home. This list helps determine if your assets are adequately protected and can save time when making a claim.

Review all building, contents, and landlord insurance policies. Make sure you understand what cover you have, as well as any exclusions or limits that may be a part of your insurance policy. It is important to be aware of these exclusions and to query your insurer about any part of a policy you do not understand.

Ensure you are covered now before bushfire threats are heightened, as some insurers may place a temporary embargo on the purchase of new policies if bushfires are imminent.

“Now is not the time to be complacent when it comes to bushfire preparedness, with El Niño already showing signs of a hot and dry summer,” Ms Macfarlane said.

For now, Ms Ryan-Jones has her own plans in place to flee in case of an emergency in the hotter months.

“Houses were lost very close to where we are during Black Saturday, so we’re currently removing items and fireproofing where we can,” she said.

“We wouldn’t stay and try to defend where we are - it would be too dangerous, before it starts to get really hot, we’re removing things like photographs... going through the process of getting actual old photographs digitised and getting everything onto USBs and having those in other locations, as well as in the safe that’s fireproof.

“We’ll just leave and having go bags at the door ready to go so that we would at least have some clothes.”

FFMVic bolstered ahead of drier, warmer fire season

By Callum Ludwig Fire season draws nearer with each passing day, but for Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) the preparation for the next fire season starts as soon as the last one ends.

It comes as the Victorian Government announced $21.7 million to create 100 ongoing and 54 fixed-term Forest Fire Operations Officer positions on 13 October, on top of the 550 seasonal firefighters appointed for the upcoming season.

Director of Forest and Fire Operations at DEECA, which oversees FFMVic, Tamara Beckett said they have been working all year round to undertake bushfire preparation work.

“We are really well prepared, along with our partners, for a potential earlier start to the season though the last couple of weeks of rainfall might have given us a bit of breathing room,” she said.

“We’ve still got an El Niño forecast, meaning that we’re anticipating a dry and warmer spring and summer, particularly in comparison to previous years, which everybody would be aware have been wetter and cooler than average and certainly not really severe summers.”

The recent recruitment drive has built a force of 1800 FFMVic personnel including more than 62,800 people in fire and emergency roles in Victoria this year.

Forest Fire Management Victoria has an 1800-strong force ahead of the fire season.

“FFMVic has over 300 firefighters across the Greater Melbourne area, including in the dedicated crews in the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges at Powelltown, Gembrook, Olinda and Woori Yallock,” she said.

“The government’s recent investment has enabled us to put on a hundred new full-time

firefighters and we’ve got our usual seasonal staff who’ve in the majority just started this week as well.”

Over the three months from 1 July to 30 September of this year, FFMVic firefighters responded to 142 fires, with the 10-year average for the same period at 148.

In recent times, residents may have no-

ticed planned burns at Toolangi and Gembrook, patriot of fuel reduction efforts while weather conditions were suitable.

Ms Beckett said in the last 12 months, they have conducted six planned burns in the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges.

“It’s really critical to enable us to have fuel-reduced areas which help us to manage fires better and have strategic areas where we can respond,” she said.

“We don’t just undertake fuel management through burning, we also have a whole range of mechanical works like mowing, mulching and removing hazardous trees to make sure we’ve got safe access in key areas for our firefighters and maintaining strategic fuel breaks.”

Ms Beckett said it’s absolutely critical that private landholders and property owners can do their part in preparing their property.

“Making sure that they’re considering what their bushfire plan is and how to get information on how to protect their property, how to prepare it, making sure they’ve got the plan in place,” she said.

Landfill plan is rejected

By Tanya Faulkner Yarra Ranges Council (YRC) has officially declined an application to develop a landfill on Lysterfield Road at the Don Bosco retreat.

Amanda Kern, YRC Acting Director of Planning and Sustainable Futures, said since its advertisement through August, the council had received 52 submissions against the proposal.

“The application was also referred to a number of statutory referral authorities, such as CFA, Melbourne Water And Vic Roads, among others, for comment.

“We received an objection to the proposal from Melbourne Water, and the applicant was notified of the objections.

“In this case, as Melbourne Water is a determining referral authority who had objected, a planning permit cannot be issued.

“In addition, the Council also had significant concerns about the merits of the proposal,” she said.

Earlier this year, a planning application was submitted to the Yarra Ranges Council for 465 Lysterfield Road, Lysterfield, to use the land for fill disposal, alter access to the road, earthworks and vegetation removal.

Currently, the site is the location of Don Bosco retreat, owned by the applicant - the Salesian Society Inc. Ms Kern said the application sought a permit to dispose of clean fill at the site, and the submission included supporting documentation to provide various environmental measures and traffic management associated with

the proposal.

The project was proposed to have been carried over a period of three years, distributed across an area of approximately 15 hectares.

Amongst those concerned, Friends of the Glenfern Green Wedge president Jo Selleck told Star Mail in a previous interview that the proposal to dump 400,000 cubic metres of landfill from unknown sites across Melbourne into the Lysterfield Valley is contrary to the Green Wedge Zone (Schedule 6).

“It is contrary to the Significant Landscape Overlay and Heritage Overlay, and the site is registered by the National Trust as a Significant Landscape,” she said Ms Selleck said the site was the subject of a VCAT case in 2018-2019, where VCAT decided against the developer and affirmed the landscape, biodiversity and agricultural values of the site.

Additionally, Knox Environmental Society president Richard Faragher said environmental impacts are often not known until it happens, until then we have to deal with the consequences.

Given these concerns from both the public and Melbourne Water, Council has issued a refusal of the application.

The applicant has 60 days from the issue date to lodge an appeal at VCAT against Council’s decision.

The buyer was drawn to the security of an ASX listed tenant - and is looking to purchase more commercial property in metropolitan Melbourne and the Yarra Ranges.

Monbulk Woolworths sold

By Tyler Wright Monbulk’s Woolworths site has been sold to a China-based buyer in his first commercial Australian venture.

CBRE’s Scott Hawthorne, who handled the listing alongside two of his colleagues, said the depth of bidding for the property could give anyone around Monbulk “a lot of confidence”.

“There were 20 offers received for the property, which for a property of this nature is exceptional,” Hawthorne, a senior negotiator for Melbourne metropolitan sales at the company, said.

“Anytime you have an ASX listed tenant... you’re always going to be held in good stead; but the fact that we had 20 bids certainly demonstrates there’s a lot of groups who are looking to buy in this part of the world.”

It’s been reported the 6,900 square metre freestanding supermarket sold for $14.5 million, with Woolworths holding the lease for another 10 years.

The Woolworths supermarket has been servicing the region for over 40 years after being built in 1979, and was refurbished in 2016.

Hawthorne said the main thing that attracted the buyer was the security of income, with option periods allowing Woolworths to potentially remain at the site until 2064.

“The fact that you’ve got such a secure tenant in place played a big role as well, so he was definitely attracted to the blue chip nature of the property,” he said.

He said if the lease wasn’t tied up with option periods, other major supermarkets would have “loved” to occupy the space.

“The interesting thing with the Yarra Ranges ... we sold Yarra Junction shopping centre a few years ago, anytime you’re selling property up this way, because of the topography of the area you’re so landlocked.

“It’s hard to find a 700-square-metre, commercial 1-zoned, owned site where you can build a supermarket because of the nature of the area.

“It makes sites like this so rare.”

Although there are a lot of headwinds in the market, Hawthorne said, getting this kind of depth of buying interest not just from the international market but a lot of local private investors, goes against the narrative that property prices are coming down.

He said the agency achieved a four and a half per cent benchmark yield for the property - well under the cash rate.

“It certainly speaks to the level of appetite to well-positioned, blue-chip properties like the Woolworths in Monbulk,” he said.

“A few groups who are the top end of the big table, they didn’t place much emphasis on the actual scale of the land holding, due to limited scope for development upside.

“It was interesting that a lot of them were attracted to the net lease structure and the secure lease term.”

According to Hawthorne, the new owner of Monbulk Woolworths is set to purchase commercial properties across metropolitan Melbourne and the Yarra Ranges when he moves to Australia in the short to medium term.

Monbulk’s Woolworths site was previously owned by a private investor based in Melbourne.

Tiny Towns Fund gives Cockatoo a $50,000 boost

By Tyler Wright The Cockatoo township is set to receive a boost after a $50,000 injection through the state government’s Tiny Towns Fund.

Community groups, local organisations and councils were eligible to apply for the grants, which support beautification projects including public art and street furniture in tiny towns of up to 5,000 people– improving livability for local families.

The initiative is also set to support the creation of tourism draw cards; offering grants for attractions including splash parks, hiking trails and more - with councils across regional Victoria, including Yarra Ranges Council and Cardinia Shire Council, eligible to apply.

Connecting Cockatoo Communities chairperson Tate McFarlane said the funds were obtained through Monbulk MP Daniela De Martino’s advocacy.

“We actually met with Daniela and sat down and spoke to her and she was interested in what the issues of the community were and wanted to know what was required,” Mr McFarlane said.

“Given her background, she has been involved in running a business, she’s also been involved in local community, so she saw what we were trying to achieve and the fact that there were dedicated volunteers on the ground trying to bring better results to the community.

“She won the seat and we got the funding, so we are grateful for that.”

Mr McFarlane said the Connecting Cockatoo Communities committee has asked for submissions from the public as to where to focus the funds for the town, and the group is now deciding which projects to spearhead.

“One of the things that came out of [the submissions] was better signage for Cockatoo - making the main street more visible,” he said.

“For a local, yes, it’s very clear where you’ve got to go, but for a non-local it’s a little bit more complex, almost to the point where if you blink you miss it.”

Mr McFarlane also said there are other ideas being floated by the committee - with the requirement that the project be completed within 12 months.

“We’re looking to add all the possible options and then we’re going to divide the funds up.

“The one that’s got the most public support at the moment is the signage around the area; that’s certainly one that will be

backed, there will be funding provided to the market.”

Mr McFarlane said the ideas will be presented to members of Cardinia Shire Council.

“Some of the ideas put forward are some things that we can’t initiate - it has to be by other parties such as Parks Victoria or the council,” he said.

“Having said that, [the ideas] are still very valid and we’re listening to what the community wants, so therefore that’s why we’re going to talk to our local council members to make them aware of ‘this is what they need, this is what we think they need.’

“It’s all a matter of taking on board the feedback of the community and looking at

how we can best invest that money to return rewards to everyone in the community.”

Daniela De Martino said Connecting Cockatoo Communities is an “energetic, consultative” committee who work hard to improve their township.

“I look forward to working with them as they develop an impressive project which will support this vibrant town,” Ms De Martino said.

“Their consultation with the community is ensuring good engagement with as many people as possible to create improvements for Cockatoo.

Wildlife hit by plunderers

By Tanya Steele Increased acts of vandalism and theft in Bunyip State Park in Gembrook have been destroying vital native environment over the winter period.

Firewood theft, vandalism and off-trail driving have been causing damage to pockets of the beautiful park, which is home to many native flora and fauna.

Manager of enforcement operations from Parks Victoria, Chris Mercier said that the forest trees provide valuable spaces for fauna and flora in the natural environment and that they are a habitat for various species.

“The trees are a home – whether standing or on the ground,” he said.

People allegedly stealing the firewood are often going into the forest after dark to cut down trees and Mr Mercier said this also increases the risk of injury to themselves.

“They’re taking a risk and it’s very dangerous,” he said.

People are impacting or destroying local wildlife with the activities and Mr Mercier said it isn’t just about the trees being taken.

“Disturbances can often disturb local fauna and they’ll move on into a territory that’s not theirs and generally will not survive,” he said.

“The radius around a fallen tree will have quite significant undergrowth damage as well,” he said.

Mr Mercier said he encourages the public to source their firewood from legal operators.

Trees being cut down means vital habitat for animals is being removed from the forest areas.

“Our wildlife don’t have anywhere to go,” he said.

People have also been going off track and driving into off-closed-off areas - causing significant damage.

Healesville Environmental Watch Inc (HEWI) President Karen Garth said that roadside areas can contain vital habitat for many plant species, particularly orchids.

“Many plants and things like native orchids like an open environment - they need that light, so it’s common for them to be on roadsides,” she said.

Anyone driving off the side of a trail can damage the quality of the landscape and Ms Garth said they can potentially destroy plant colonies.

Bunyip State Park provides many places for four-wheel drive and trail bikers to ride through the forest, there is no reason to go off road.

The state park provides a space purely for people to visit and Mr Mercier said following park rules and leaving the natural landscape untouched is vital for the future of the forests.

“When you look at these national parks, on a landscape scale – we’re really like little islands in a sea of agriculture or cities and this is all we got left,” he said.

People visiting their local parks can also help by leaving fallen wood and logs where they lie and using a lightweight stove for cooking, instead of a campfire.

“This is all we’ve got - and it’s in trouble,” Mr Mercier said.

Sherbrooke walking tracks under long-term lens The Sherbrooke forest trails of the Dandenongs continue to be restored after huge impacts from the June 2021 storms, with projects like the ngurrak barring| Ridgewalk boosting the efforts.

The popular Dandenong Ranges National Forest area is part of the a joint effort by Yarra Ranges Council and Parks Victoria to resurface several kilometres of tracks through the Sherbrooke area.

Research Fellow in Ecology at La Trobe University, Dr Alex Maisey said that overall the works are positive but focus should also remain on regular maintenance of what is already there.

“We have got some beautiful places [in Sherbrooke] but it’s been in a state of disrepair, there are these magnificent tracks that have had bridges down and have been eroding away,” he said.

“The Wattle Track that has a long bridge in Sherbrooke, for us, for example, is being fixed because of a funding injection from the ridge walk – But the next tree that falls on it, it won’t be fixed.”

Parks Victoria is currently engaged in works to repair Wattle Track Bridge, which

was destroyed by large tree fall in 2019.

Dr Masiey said that beyond building the project, the management of environmental and biodiversity projects often gain funding in the onset but support disappears as time moves on.

“I’d ask where is the increase in funding ongoing for the next 30 years to maintain that project,” he said.

“We’re in a position in Victoria where we don’t have enough funding to maintain the current track network as it is, it’s woeful, it’s actually embarrassing.”

The delivery of works as part of the ngurrak barring| Ridgewalk project have so far also complemented Parks Victoria’s flood recovery program.

Parks Victoria District Manager, Brendan Sullivan said that Sherbrooke Falls were heavily impacted by the June 2021 storm event, with hundreds of trees falling across roads and walking tracks “Parks Victoria has worked closely with Yarra Ranges Council, through the ngurrak barring|Ridgewalk project,” he said.

“Parks Victoria coordinated immediate clearing works with support from specialist contractors and in-house teams, and it’s been

fantastic seeing the local community enjoying this special place since it reopened in May 2022.”

Dr Masiey said that it’s been great to see the some effort being put into creating nature and connection opportunities that are sustainable for the ngurrak| Ridgewalk and the Yarra Ranges Council and that the consultation process was quite thorough.

“I think it’s a really a good thing to be doing - encouraging people to get out and care and protect their local environment,” he said.

“They gave us us opportunities to have input about as to where sensitive areas are to be avoided for biodiversity and which areas would be more appropriate for the art,” he said.

Overall, the project aspires to connect community with nature - but Dr Maisey said that comes to walking track networks, maintenance is key and that when a bridge comes down, like the Wattle long bridge, long term impacts can be seen.

“It really detracted from the appeal, people love a loop track,” he said.

“If we maintain what we’ve got already, we’d probably have have a much more positive impact on achieving those kinds of goals.

Questions over weed sprays

By Tanya Faulkner Concerns have arisen from locals about the use of weed sprays by councils across Victoria, including Knox.

It comes as a class action lawsuit has been undertaken in the Federal Court in Melbourne, with 800 Australians claiming their diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is linked to using glyphosate-based weed killer, Roundup.

Knox City Council (KCC) is one of many across the state that use glyphosate-based herbicides, namely Roundup Biactive, formulated for use in environmentally sensitive areas.

A representative of KCC said the council uses a range of methods to manage weeds on Council land, including mulching, hand weeding, goats (in some steep areas and difficult terrain) and selective herbicides for targeted weed species.

Despite concerns, they said methods such as hand weeding are preferred at sensitive sites, including playgrounds, kindergartens, preschools and school zones but there are occasions when other methods are used in accordance with strict control measures.

According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), glyphosate - the world’s most commonly used herbicide - was identified as a probable human carcinogen.

For the herbicide, there was limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans for nonHodgkin lymphoma, however studies have shown convincing evidence that glyphosate can cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Additionally, evidence was found in the 2015 studies that glyphosate caused DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells.

Brimbank councils have all re-introduced glyphosate sprays into their weed-control methods in recent months, with locals to those municipalities unhappy with the change.

Port Phillip Council acting Mayor Andrew Bond said the reintroduction has come following investigation by council officers, which considered academic and industry advice.

A petition is now being launched by PortPhillip locals.

Knox Environmental Society, whose focus is on the protection and improvement of biodiversity across the Knox municipality, said weed control is a concern in the region, however safety is also important for locals.

President Richard Faragher said they would want all people to be as safe as possible at work and around their municipalities.

“If another product can be used as a replacement which is safer and better for the environment, then we would endorse its use.

“Having said that, we would want weed control work to continue, so our natural spaces are not overrun by weeds.

“This can happen very quickly, so if spraying was suddenly stopped it could take years to recover,” he said.

The Knox City Council representative said the council follows advice and guidelines from government regulators to ensure a consistent focus on staff and community safety and environmental sensitivity.

“We are guided by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority governing body and best practice guidelines,” they said.

Grant to boost student education on environment

By Tanya Faulkner A local school teaching its kids the value of the environment, has come away with a grant to improve the school’s biodiversity.

Park Ridge Primary School is a recent recipient of a 2023 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant, with goals to beautify the school and improve the environment on site.

The total grant awarded is $4,139.73 to go towards the school’s landcare and biodiversity projects over the coming years.

Park Ridge science teacher Jessica Deans said receiving the grant has been three years in the making for the school, and has encouraged them to rethink their school project.

“After talking with my principal, Mr Dale Blythman, about our smaller Rewilding Our School project, we decided to explore a larger scale biodiversity project as part of a 3-year whole school gardening project,” she said.

Ms Deans said the school has collaborated with the Knox Environmental Society and Bird Life Australia to come up with improvements under the new project, inspiring wider collaboration for the students and school community.

“We realised that the plants we had were attracting larger aggressive birds and had minimal habitats for the smaller birds and animals.

“We had several areas earmarked for future planting projects and decided to design an area that would contain local natives, be wheelchair accessible and include different textures in the native plant section.

“The Landcare Biodiversity Grant seemed a natural choice for this project,” she said.

The project pays homage to the natural environment of Knox, with a focus on local flora and fauna to be used throughout the project.

Ms Deans said they also want to use the project as a chance to educate their students about biodiversity and garden maintenance.

“We have selected a range of plants that are threatened or endangered within the Knox area, specific to Rowville that are the right size for smaller bidrs and animals, and with a range of texture types for sensory play for the students.

“We’ve also requested funds for an incursion to educate students about Australia’s Vanishing Species through Black Snake Productions so they learn the purpose of the garden and the need to care for its ongoing maintenance.

“Our Year 5 and 6 students will participate in the incursion and will present what they learn in a newsletter and at assembly for the younger students,” she said.

Knox locals are also set to benefit from the schools’ project, with Park Ridge providing opportunity for threatened species to grow and thrive, which Ms Dean said will help the overall local wildlife.

“We believe it is important to start teaching students about biodiversity and the little ways that we can all help so that the students can have a healthy, biodiverse planet to live on,” she said.

Ms Dean said Park Ridge Primary school has been working on developing a school culture that promotes environmental sustainability over recent years, through the implementation of several groups amongst the pupils.

“We now have The Garden Club; Environmental Leaders, I Sea I Care which has been running for a number of years now, and our Early Act group, who have just used their fundraising to get all of the classrooms new recycling bins for paper and cardboard.

“We have introduced science as a spe-

cialist subject this year, focusing on student agency when it comes to environmental issues and the small steps they can take at home to help the planet,” she said.

Not only are students participating in landcare and biodiversity for the school, they are also being encouraged to participate in national environment campaigns to broaden their impact in the community.

MS Dean said the students have taken on several projects this year, some more frequent than others.

“Students participated in Clean Up Australia Day, have developed posters on a range of environmental issues, and have been given the opportunity to be involved in a Think Tank Expo to develop innovations for current and future industries with a focus on sustainable environmental practices.

“Our Junior school have also started running Waste Free Wednesdays and compost collection to feed our work farm at school, which then feeds our veggie garden,” she said.

However, despite the excitement and enthusiasm of their current students, particularly those as part of the Garden Club, Ms Dean said some of the students may miss out on the long-term results of their upcoming project.

“Unfortunately our Garden Club members for this year will only get to see the fruits of their labour when they visit the school.

“The up-and-coming Environmental Leaders for 2024, and our current Year 5 students, will be seeing the project through,” she said. mailcommunity.com.au

By Tanya Faulkner From sweaty shorts and sneakers to suit and tie, a local sporting club is shining bright in Ferntree Gully.

The Ferntree Gully Tennis Club has come away with the win for Most Outstanding Inclusion Initiative for their All abilities program at the recent Victoria Tennis awards for 2023.

Ferntree Gully Tennis Club president Paul Proctor, who received the award on behalf of the club, said it was fantastic to have taken the win.

“It’s a very rewarding moment for everyone.

“To be representing the club as president, it’s been a lot of hard work over the years talking with people like Blind Tennis, and people from Special Olympics Australia, who we are now affiliated with the Eastern Ranges branch.

“We’re so grateful for our peers who have voted for us, and to have been in such high calibre company on the night,” he said.

The 2023 Victorian Tennis Awards took place on Tuesday 17 October at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

Mr Proctor said some of Australia’s tennis greats were in attendance at the awards night, and it was a privilege to have been amongst those crowds.

“Being in that company was quite special, and showed what kind of impact you can have in what you think is a large organisation - even as a small club,” he said.

For the club president, and vice president Justin Metcalf, it’s not just about the award, but those behind the work leading to this recognition.

“We want to give a special mention to Rebecca, Kylie and our committee members who are all volunteers - and do a great job supporting us week in and week out, on and off the court.

Recently the club collaborated with the Doncaster Tennis Club for its first all abilities tournament, which was hosted at the Ferntree Gully Tennis Club.

The event was a great success, for both the players and the clubs establishing a new relationship in the Victorian tennis community.

TRIP programs return to hopefully save young lives

By Callum Ludwig A program with the potential to save young lives is getting back up and running in the Yarra Ranges with a sombre session at the start of December ahead of the Christmas holidays.

Back by community request after Covid interruptions, local emergency services are urging young drivers and their families to attend the Yarra Valley TRIP (Teenage Road Information Program).

Former Hillcrest CFA Captain and the Chairperson of Yarra Valley TRIP Fiona Burns said the program started back in 2011.

“It was driven by the fact that we had had several serious fatalities and serious injuries on the roads which involved our young people and most of those crashes were actually avoidable,” she said.

“There were things such as speed, not wearing a seatbelt, distracted driving and alcohol use that contributed to those crashes occurring and essentially we wanted to put together a program that made young people

The event has historically been held every two years, with representatives from local CFA, SES, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police involved.

Ms Burns said the session is also about empowering young people to ‘Stand Up’, the

theme of this year’s event.

“What we’ve seen is the conversation that young people have had with each other or with their parents that’s resulted in them being more mindful about their driving behaviour and their willingness to hold their friends to account for their driving behaviour,” she said.

“We talk extensively about what we call the ripple effect; you might have the crash and be involved, but then there are the first responders who attend your crash, then there’s your immediate family, your friends from school, friends you play cricket, football or netball with, the hospital staff, the doctors, the rehab, the legal system in some cases.

One crash impacts 200 or 300 people,” “I can’t sit here and say we’ve not had a fatality since it, because we have, but I certainly think we’ve seen a reduction, particularly in our young people, being involved in serious fatalities.”

Attendees are warned that the session will be hard-hitting, at times graphic and heartbreaking as well as guest speakers including a person who went to prison for a serious crash

and local first responders who’ve been at the scenes of fatal crashes.

Ms Burns said even if they only make an impact on one person’s driving behaviour and that changes the outcome of a crash, it’s a success.

“If we can get the message across to young people about the consequences but also empower them with tools to help them talk to their friends, that’s where the success of the program comes from,” she said.

“It becomes generational because then they talk to it to their younger sister or brother, then they talk to their kids when they become parents about their driving behaviour and it creates a multi-generation change because we accept it’s not going to happen overnight.”

The session will be held at Heritage Funeral Homes in Woori Yallock on Wednesday 6 December. Attendees are asked to arrive at 6.30pm for a 7pm start, finishing at 8.30pm with supper served after.

RJ’s burpee bonanza pays

By Tyler Wright A Kalorama resident has achieved the Guinness World Record for the amount of burpees completed in 24 hours.

RJ Singh pushed through to complete the massive feat of 11,000 burpees at the Olinda Recreation Reserve on Sunday 8 October through to Monday 9 October in an effort to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute.

Mr Singh said his original goal was to complete a world record for running on a treadmill.

“One day it was raining and I was thinking, ‘well, I’ve got to watch the kids, I can’t go jump on the treadmill to train for this running record; what can I do to move my body?’” he said.

“I knew burpees I could do stationery and I could watch the kids; I did about 45 minutes of burpees and I started doing more burpees and ultimately a penny dropped that it’s just going to be the world record that I’m going to have to attempt.”

Mr Singh began training in January 2023.

“I got my body conditioned to 40 minutes; 500 per piece, and I’d rest for 20 minutes,” he said.

“I knew if I could do that 24 times, I’d be OK. “I did a 12-hour session in my living room from 9pm to 9am by myself, and I was able to do 6,000 which was half of the number that I wanted to do, so my brain accepted that it’s a reality.”

While Mr Singh didn’t reach his personal goal - he still managed to break the current Guinness World Record for the same achievement, which sits at 10,856 burpees in 24 hours.

“Things started to get hard at around midnight,” he said.

“I made the call that I wasn’t going to focus on the 12,00 burpees; I was going to focus just on breaking the record, so I slept for about 25 minutes.

“I had 45 minutes left, and the funny thing is, it’s like once my body knew I hit the record, I tried to keep after I got 11 ,000, but my body just stopped.”

Through his efforts, Mr Singh also managed to raise nearly $2,500 for the Black Dog Institute; a not-for-profit facility for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders

“I’m a recovering alcoholic, I’ve been in sobriety for about 13 years and the whole process of the shift from New South Wales to [the Dandenongs]; these things compounded stress and compounded change,” he said.

“It took me a long time to get my mental health okay... but what I also noticed was that there was a real level of fatigue within the community, because of two things; one was Covid and the extraordinary lockdown that Victorians went through, but also the storms from [2021].

“The reason I didn’t do this event out at gym, which would have been easier, was I

wanted to get the community involved, our community on the hill, and start to highlight through my illustration that just moving your body will shift your headspace.”

Mr Singh said the community was supportive before and after the event.

“We had kids from the school, the parents, we had people from the footy club, the cricket club; we had just regular community members walking in and out and saying hello.

“It was extraordinary.”

Although experiencing fatigue and with allergies resurfacing after the event, Mr Singh said his message is that no one is “special” but not in the negative way you might think.

“It’s as simple as - particularly with mental health, whether it’s seasonal depression or depression or things that get us down - we underestimate the importance of moving our body, and we tend to try to think ourselves into a better place, and that’s where the problem lies in our thinking.

“You can’t use your psychology to push yourself forward when it’s compromised.

“We create superheroes out of people, but when we do that, we don’t realise that we then put them in a place that is beyond the realm of our own capabilities, and we need not do that; that’s a mistake.”

Amazing Greys: How sweet the sound for hounds

By Cam Lucadou-Wells It was a boomtime for pets during Covid lockdowns, but now they have fallen out of fashion.

The shortage of new pet owners has now reached a “crisis point”, according to Olindabased rescue group Amazing Greys.

The charity is struggling to find foster homes or permanent homes for about 100 ex-racing and rescue greyhounds a year.

With workers returning to the office or travelling abroad since lockdowns, a growing number of pets are being returned or abandoned.

“It was a bit fashionable to have greyhounds for a while,” Amazing Greys founder Martina says.

“But the adoption queries have significantly slowed down now. They have reached a saturation point.

“It’s reached a crisis that is affecting a lot of other breeds. There’s a high abandonment rate for cats and dogs.”

Like many charities, Amazing Greys is also struggling with dwindling donations and volunteer burnout.

Since 2011, its volunteers have rehabilitated greyhounds that have been surrendered by trainers and breeders.

It all started after Martina was first besotted by her friend’s mother’s greyhound - “the most beautiful dog I’d ever seen”.

This led her to adopting her first as a pet.

“I could either adopt from the greyhound adoption industry or another organisation funded by the greyhound industry.

“I wanted something independent and not affiliated with racing.”

“We’ve got great relationships with breeders and trainers but no funding from the racing industry. We rely on donations and volunteers to do the work.”

In the past decade, the common view on greyhounds had changed from an “aggressive” breed to a “gentle”, “chilled out” pet, Martina says.

“They’re bred for speed, so they tend to expend all of their energy quickly and in one go.

“They like to have a comfortable life on the couch.”

Martina reckons that most surrendered greyhounds are slightly under a healthy weight.

Making history in the hills From page 1 Mr Mittmann said the history of Burrinja speaks for the grass root activities we find in the Hills.

“There was clearly a need for an arts centre in the late 90s, and when the building became vacant it was the local community that wanted to set this up.

“Various groups got behind the centre, not just one, and brought in lots of creatives for the centre.

“Going through the archives has been interesting to see how many artists have been connected to Burrinja - some are still around, and some have long passed on.

“It’s a good time to reflect on the creative potential in the Dandenong Ranges,” he said.

Harte said the building, which stands as it is today from a passionately-driven community, has had its quirks through the years.

“It’s quite a retrofitted kind of space, with lots of quirks the staff have had to deal with over the years, like curvy exhibition walls or carpet in the performance spaces,” they said.

Burrinja has seen many changes to both the interior and exterior of the building, which Harte described as being where the old meets the new.

“In 2009 we were awarded funding to build the theatre out the back, and in 2019 - 2020 we got funding to upgrade the north-west wing for our artist studios and galleries.

“It’s really taken 25 years to get our building up to scratch and what it is now,” they said.

Harte said all of the developments have all come in timely fashion, in response to the changes of the Upwey community, allowing them to provide the best services for the trends of the decades.

“As performing arts became more prominent or popular in the late 2000s, that was when the theatre was built.

“Then as the professionalism of artists and dedication of their own practices have developed in the last five years, particularly visual artists, we have been able to respond and create a space to go with the times and create more opportunities for artists of the Hills.

“Burrinja has been able to track the organic nature of the wider community and create a building that facilitates those changes,” they said.

Alongside the unique features that Burrinja boasts in the Hills, the cultural centre maintains a special relationship with both the community and the council.

Harte said their partnership with the Yarra Ranges Council is one mostly unseen in Victoria.

“Our centre is delivered in partnership with the council, but we run independently with our own board.

“It makes for an interesting governance.

“Burrinja maintains autonomy which allows them to be very responsive to community needs and interests, however we deliver outcomes that benefit both parties - it’s very unique compared to other organisations in the state,” they said.

Cultural development producer Toni Main echoed the comments of her colleague, and said it’s something really special.

Ms Main said Burrinja is a special entity in Upwey, driving arts and culture in the Hills community alongside its locals.

“You don’t have to agree with everyone, but it’s amazing that we can all come to this space and create together.

Curator, Mr Mittmann, has been uncovering long-lost stories in the archives of Burrinja in previous weeks, and said there is a rich history woven through the centre.

“It is evident that there is such a rich fabric of creatives, of all kinds of colours, shapes and mediums, in the Hills that use Burrinja as a platform, or who have come through and connected with the space.

“To see that kind of rich fabric speaks volumes for what we are doing here.

“It’s a good spirit and encouragement for the work of Burrinja,” he said.

As Burrinja gears up for its 25th birthday celebrations in the coming weeks, their team are calling on locals to get involved and share any memorabilia and stories they have of the centre.

Harte said their team want to take the opportunity to, not just look backwards, but

also look forwards.

“If the community has any items, photos, stories or connections with Burrinja, we encourage them to reach out and share it with our team.

“We’ll use it to, not only tell the story of what was, but also what is possibly yet to come in Upwey,” they said.

Ms Main said as part of the celebrations, they are welcoming back an artist from the past to participate in a centre-wide takeover.

“Joyce Willow, who was part of the ‘Deranged’ artist collective back in the day, is creating a gorilla takeover of most of the building.

“She said to me ‘this is how we used to do it, so let’s invite a new age of artists’ to do it like they used to,” she said.

The takeover will be featured around all of the unused space around Burrinja, including blank pillars, under chairs, and in all of the nooks and crannies, to bring back the gorilla activism of what used to be.

Ms Willow has already received 25 applications from artists wanting to participate in the feature.

Alongside the takeover, there will be several features, galleries, and activities hosted at Burrinja to celebrate their long standing history in Upwey with the community.

Mr Mittmann said locals will be able to learn more of the history through stories told in the galleries.

“We hope to make the history that is sometimes invisible, more visible,” he said.

Ms Main said the local artists will also host an event to showcase their passion for the community, and invite new artists to connect with them.

“Our current artists who are already involved in Burrinja will host an art market, and will have their artwork for sale throughout the celebrations.

“We’re also inviting new artists who are not currently connected with Burrinja to get involved in a takeover exhibition upstairs, and we hope to create new connections in the Hills,” she said.

Harte said the event is all about bringing locals together in celebration of the community’s rich art and culture, sharing stories of old and new, and connecting over local entertainment.

“It’s all happening at the centre for our birthday celebrations.

“We have an orchestra playing a concert outside, the galleries will be open throughout, and we’ll have food and beverages available for the community,” they said.

The official date of Burrinja’s birthday celebrations is Sunday 3 December at the centre.

By Tanya Faulkner One of Australia’s cutest native animals is being celebrated in the Hills, with locals encouraged to learn more about local wildlife.

The Yarra Ranges Council is hosting a Platypus Festival, a free community event for families to come down and learn about the web-footed creature that resides in several locations around the municipality.

Locals and their children will have the opportunity to learn the values of the local environment, including the platypus, and what they can do to help protect wildlife in the Hills.

Yarra Ranges Council climate resilience buildings officer Vinnie Aulich said platypus numbers are in decline nationally, and are listed as vulnerable in Victoria.

“Locally, populations are impacted by a number of factors, including habitat loss and degradation, disturbance and significant weather events such as droughts or periods of significant rainfall,” he said.

Mr Aulich said locals can expect a fun day of activities in the beautiful setting of Belgrave Lake Park at the Platypus Festival.

“There will be music, platypus education, art activities, food and face painting available for locals,” he said.

Lyster Ward Councillor Cr Johanna Skelton said local residents of all ages will enjoy learning how to save the platypus at this event.

“I think it will change the way we look at our water catchments.

“Whether we think about it or not, all of us in the Yarra Ranges have a part to play in saving this species.

It’s important that we prevent harm by ensuring our backyard is free of chemicals or weedy plants that might go into the waterway,

and by keeping your dog away from their habitat,” she said.

Cr Skelton said volunteering with local ‘Friends of’ or Landcare groups can also help improve local water health, among other simple activities.

“Helping pick up rubber hair bands when we spot them, participating in citizen science surveys, slowing water runoff and never using Opera nets all help.

“There are so many ways we can ensure that the incredible Platypus remains in our area for the next generation, and this event will help you connect with the species to give you a ‘why’ as well as a ‘how’.

“It’s also just a fun, family friendly and free event,” she said.

The event will be held on Sunday 22 October from 11am to 3pm at the Belgrave Lake Park for locals to enjoy.

Aussie Bird Count returns for 10th year

By Tyler Wright Anyone who has wandered around their backyard and spotted a bird species that intrigued them was given the chance to document their discoveries for National Bird Week.

BirdLife’s 2023 Aussie Bird Count, held from Monday 16 October to Saturday 21 October, has set the challenge for Australians to set a new record and count more than five million birds.

The Aussie Bird Count encouraged people of all ages and all walks of life to step outdoors or to their windows and count bird sightings within a 20-minute period.

Selby-based nature photographer, Kathie Thomas, has been participating in the bird count for several years.

Ms Thomas said taking part in the count is her way of contributing to a citizen science project while pursuing her passion of birding.

“Having seen 56 different species of birds, in that time, on my own property in Selby (two acres),“ Ms Thomas said.

“I never thought I would see so many different birds – it’s amazing.“ So far during this year’s count, Ms Thomas has spotted a Yellow-faced Honeyeater once, and the Rainbow Lorikeet eight times - among 36 other species.

“I often photograph them too,“ she said.

“At Birdsland Reserve, I’ve documented a total of 75 species over the past five years.

This doesn’t mean all of these species are on my property or at Birdsland all at the same time, they vary, depending on the time of year.

Spring, mid-October, probably attracts a lot more species because it’s nesting and breeding time.“ Ms Thomas said the Bird Count app by Birdlife Australia and eBird by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology are great ways to share what people see and contribute to an Australian wide and world wide project tracking birds in the country.

“I find so many people are starting to take notice of the birds around them, and get excited to see them in their own gardens,“ she said.

“Children are taking a lot of notice of them these days. I get excited when I see a ‘new’ bird and I know many others too.

Many are super excited to get a ‘lifer’, that is a photo of a bird they’ve never seen before.

I should add, if you get birds in your garden, then you’re doing something right, you have the right mix of plants, bushes and trees. It’s a privilege to share our gardens with them.“ During the past 10 years, annual data collected during the Aussie Bird Count has provided BirdLife Australia with valuable insights into the state of native birds across the country.

“Participation in this year’s count will enable bird experts to understand more about state-based trends, identify if these trends are continuing for declining species, and help us determine the reasons for the declines,” National Public Affairs manager for BirdLife, Sean Dooley said.

Taking a count at the same time each year allows BirdLife Australia to access a snapshot of how Australian birds are faring, helping identify trends over time and gauging the overall health of the environment, with birds serving as a barometer of nature.

The annual count seeks to assess the long-

term impacts of environmental and humanmade threats on native birds, encompassing concerns such as increased mortality rates, heightened vulnerability to predators, and the disruption of their natural habitats.

The critically endangered swift parrot has been chosen as the 2023 Australian Bird of the Year, voted by Australians who recognised the urgent need to protect the habitat of the world’s fastest parrot.

Researchers at the Australian National University have found the swift parrot is in a perilous decline, with the population set to dwindle to fewer than 100 individuals by 2031, unless significant conservation efforts are put in place.

Participants in the Aussie Bird Count contribute to preparing for future risks and support the implementation of proactive measures aimed at safeguarding and rejuvenating Australia’s distinctive birdlife.

Spring has sprung, which means Healesville Sanctuary’s critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums are waking from their winter slumber with big appetites.

These precious possums are Australia’s only hibernating marsupial and can spend up to seven months under the snow in the Bogong High Plains and Mt Buller in Victoria, and Mount Kosciuszko in New South Wales.

Healesville Sanctuary’s possums live in temperature-controlled habitats that mimic the alpine environment.

However, while the Sanctuary’s possums have food provided to them daily, the wild populations have to wait for their key spring food source – the endangered Bogong Moth, which migrates from breeding grounds to the alps and back again.

Worryingly, the severe drought in 2017 saw Bogong Moth numbers plummet by an estimated 99.5 per cent, prompting Zoos Victoria to launch the conservation project, Moth Tracker.

This citizen science Moth Tracker website maps the migration of Bogong Moths across Australia, thanks to photo submissions that can be uploaded by anyone who has a potential sighting of a Bogong Moth. The images are then verified and mapped on the Moth Tracker website.

Bogong Moths are small and mostly brown, with a body length of around 2.5 – 3.5 centimetres. They have a dark stripe that runs down each wing with a circular spot at the top of the stripe and a kidney-shaped spot at the bottom.

Bogong Moths were added to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Endangered Species list in December 2021.

Healesville Sanctuary Threatened Species Keeper Paula Watson said Mountain Pygmy-possums’ body weight changes dramatically during their hibernation.

“Each week the possums shed weight and, come springtime, they weigh around 40 grams – half their autumn weight - which means they are hungry and ready to breed when they wake,” she said.

Open Gardens Victoria will open the historic Mimosa garden in Sassafras on the weekend 29th and 30th October.

Open gardens to delight Open Gardens Victoria will open Mimosa, a beautiful Dandenong Ranges garden in Sassafras, on the weekend 28-29 October.

Established circa 1910 as a private summer residence, this historic hills garden has a fascinating horticultural history.

Set within three acres of temperate rainforest, Mimosa’s gardens have been progressively enhanced from a rumoured Edna Walling 1930s design and feature an eclectic mix of large specimens of native and European trees, many over 100 years old.

A number of picturesque, meandering moss-covered trails wind their way throughout the garden.

The property was originally established by G H Doery of Canterbury. During WW1 the Doery family offered up their extensive home and gardens, ‘Highton’ in Mont Albert Rd, Canterbury (now part of Camberwell Grammar School), as a convalescing hospital for returned and injured soldiers and relocated to Mimosa, where the property and gardens were significantly extended, landscaped, and planted as a more permanent residence.

A highlight of the garden is the 620-squaremetre sunken lawn, excavated by hand during the 1930s, along with the construction of the impressive 4.2-metre-high and 40- centimetre-deep deep stone retaining wall at the northern end.

Featuring a small wooden gazebo, the sunken lawn evokes the feeling of a magical and secluded forest clearing, and is a popular and charming location for small wedding ceremonies.

Mimosa’s original glasshouse, which is still in operation, was built around the same time.

Visitors will find it filled with exotic plants.

At the base of the garden, a deck with seating extends out over Sassafras Creek.

This delightful garden provides all-yearround greenery with an explosion of colour in spring from the sequential blooming of a collection of very large magnolias, azaleas, and rhododendrons and a superb Paulownia in full flower.

Mimosa is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people.

Apply to showcase arts

By Callum Ludwig The exciting opportunity for artists to showcase their works next year has arrived with nominations open for Yarra Ranges Council’s Regional Exhibitions Program 2024.

The program gives the artist the chance to exhibit in The Gallery at The Memo in Healesville or in The Studio at the Arts Centre, Warburton.

Regional Exhibitions Officer Bronwyn Ward said they’re open to any ideas and suggestions.

“They are each really vibrant spaces suited to different types of artworks and approaches so we’re looking for a broad range of mediums, including installation-based works, or whatever people want to present,” she said.

“It’s a great time if you’re a local artist to put together an idea and to pop a submission in.”

An information night is being held online on Thursday 6 November where artists interested in the opportunity can have any questions they have about the program answered.

Ms Wad said the response this year was extraordinary and they were really overwhelmed by the applications they received.

“It’s meant that we’ve been able to deliver a really strong and varied program which has been fantastic, and for next year we would really hope for more of the same; to have some artists who really want to showcase their work and provide something that’s really interesting and engaging for our community,” she said.

“Our incredible team working in the background has added in points where we can suspend work from the ceiling and a state-ofthe-art lighting system has just been installed in The Memo, so these spaces are operating at their best at the moment and have that flexibility for ideas to be expanded on.”

Dark message behind poem taking pride in trades

By Maria Millers We call them Tradies, those men and increasingly women we turn to when the toilet is blocked, the tap drips, the kitchen drawer collapses and there’s a paint job to do. We see them on the roads in their Isuzu D maxes or Ford Ranger utes.

We grumble about them not replying to our messaging or complain about the high cost of a call out. But we need them in our lives just as we discovered during the pandemic how certain people, so long overlooked, ignored or taken for granted were necessary for our well being Sometimes, we don’t appreciate their skills or indeed that the nature of their work can lead to them having serious health problems.

We have all been made aware of the dangers of working with hazardous materials and well remember the James Hardie asbestos case with the inspirational Bernie Banton as the public face of victims of asbestos related diseases.

More recently the manufacture of highly popular ‘must have’ kitchen and bathroom reconstituted stone products was shown to cause silicosis: a permanent and untreatable lung disease in those breathing in the silica dust.

Paint no longer contains dangerous amounts of lead but this doesn’t mean that there are no other additives for inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth and preserving shelf life.

But in the main when we think of industrial dangers we primarily think of accidents on building sites or with machinery, and not so readily would consider the dangers of be20 MAIL

WOORILLA WORDS ing a painter.

Often it is the language of poetry that is more effective than prose when it comes to conveying a message and increasing awareness.

In Kevin Brophy’s poem Painters he is not talking of painters as artists. They are Tradies. And they stand for anyone who loves and takes pride in their work. They are not painting the ceiling of a Sistine Chapel. More mundanely they are painting walls, roofs and removing peeling, flaking paint and breathing in dust and fumes.

Just as we overlooked tradies and essential workers, the speaker in this poem seems to be seeing the painters with new eyes beyond their ordinariness. They are compared to elves as if they were magical characters who when sitting out some rain in their van or ute have their ladders folded above them like wings.

But despite this portrayal of the painters as almost fairy-like the poem has a darker message. The work they are doing may be magical in transforming a dingy room, a corridor or giving the outside of a house a facelift but the paints they work with ,though

no longer heavy with lead, nevertheless still contain highly toxic ingredients.

Many tradies have early starts and little time for good nutrition. The constant fix for flagging energy is fast food, sugary coffee, doughnuts. You see them ‘refuelling’ for energy at fast food outlets as they travel from job to job.

The stress of juggling work seems to impinge on sleep and ultimately health suffers The speaker feels we are complicit in these workers’ health deteriorations. We are such slaves of passing fashions and fads, not just in clothing but also in keeping up with ever changing home colour palettes decreed by advertising, influencers and home renovation reality shows.

The painters are aware of the environmental consequences of what to do with leftover cans of paint. I’m sure that most of us have faced this same problem of how to dispose of leftover paint, congealing in tins in garages. The painters in the poem are aware that disposed indiscriminately there will be environmental damage but also realise that it has to be disposed of regardless.

There are places, deep and foul, where paint must go when its colour is no longer favoured, they will say, but they have a living to make, families to support, mortgages to pay and Their elf hearts move inside them at each slap of colour on a wall or fence or seedy chair.

This is a poem about painters but it’s also a poem about our values and how some sections of our society pay a heavy price to make our lives feel deeply real.

At night they dream of edges of immaculate neatness.

They admire leaves and what autumn does to them.

Their lives are short, for each painted colour releases a poisonous fume like a sigh as it spreads and dries and makes our lives feel deeply real.

The painters speak less and less as the fumes take hold.

Their wives and children watch the painters going like elves to another kind of existence.

You ask them what to do with leftover cans of paint and they tell you it’s not easy, for paint would stain the sea and kill the fish if you let it go.

There are places, deep and foul, where paint must go when its colour is no longer favoured, they will say, and you will feel they are the enemies of the paint they love.

Their elf hearts move inside them at each slap of colour on a wall or fence or seedy chair.

Hear voices of Lilydale An exciting new project in Lilydale has recently been launched at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum. The new initiative offers community members an opportunity to engage in a range of creative events and share their own stories.

Aptly named Lilydale Voices, the project will feature five exciting events that invite community members to share and listen to stories, while celebrating the diverse range of voices in the community.

The first Lilydale Voices event is ‘Heart: Finding Home’ - an interactive letter writing activity that invites people to share what home means to them.

People can share their thoughts through written words or drawings and display their work publicly at the Museum. The event includes translated material and community members are welcome to share their contributions in their chosen language.

ECLC’s CEO Michael Smith said the centre was excited to be leading these community events that are focussed on community connectedness and engagement.

“ECLC is thrilled to be running Lilydale Voices over the next six months and is pleased that the letter writing activity has been so well received in the community,” he said.

“Lilydale Voices really looks to create engagement within the Lilydale community and surrounds, and also support local businesses in and around the area,” he added.

Curated by artist Alisa Tanaka-King, the events have been designed to be as accessible and inclusive to encourage positive engagement and community connectedness.

Alisa Tanaka-King said that she was thrilled to have been engaged by ECLC to curate these series of events for Lilydale Voices post pandemic.

Spanish survival thriller, Nowhere, deserves notice Nowhere Starring Anna Castillo and Tamar Novas Rated MA15+ 3.75/5 Nowhere is a very solid Spanish survival thriller driven by a riveting central performance.

Fleeing an authoritarian regime, a pregnant woman named Mia (Anna Castillo) finds herself adrift inside a shipping container in the middle of the ocean.

An effective “bottle film” (a film with a small, confined setting), Nowhere creatively mines tension (and some humour) from Mia’s plight.

mance of desperation, tenacity and tenderness as Mia. After Mia gives birth, the film draws some amusement from her dealing with

the stress of motherhood in an extreme situation. Mia’s hunger, dwindling supplies and the rising water level, caused by bullet-holes in the container’s hull, generate strong ongoing suspense, but as Mia figures out ways to survive, the damp, desolate setting becomes almost cozy as she bonds with her newborn Noa. It’s also fun to watch Mia find uses for the seemingly useless junk inside the container.

Nowhere stumbles slightly in its opening and ending. The world-building stretches credulity: a totalitarian regime rounding up pregnant women and children is implausibly evil.

The first act, which draws clear visual in-

spiration from Children of Men, has a very tense scene of a regime officer searching for a shipment of scared refugees, and when he finds them, the resulting massacre would have been more shocking if the film hadn’t shown us; as with horror, sometimes our imagination is scarier than what we can see.

A time-jump in the final act undermines the film’s pacing, and the climax has a miraculous turn of events that feels downright silly after such a grounded narrative.

A compelling bottle movie with an outstanding lead performance, Nowhere is available for streaming on Netflix.

Top awards for rising stars The footy season might be over, but celebrations for Olinda-Ferny Creek are still underway following a recent awards night held by the club.

Captain of the Olinda-Ferny Creek women’s footy team Claire Hyett has added her first Best and Fairest trophy to a remarkable 2023 season.

Claire’s improvement as a player mirrors her team’s incredible rise to prominence in the Outer East Football Netball League.

Only three seasons ago the OFC women’s side was struggling to get enough people to play and early on, they barely troubled the scorer in the League’s Second Division.

Fast forward to 2023 and they proudly held the First Division premiership cup aloft as the best team in the whole League.

OFC scraped into the four this year before disposing of the undefeated Healesville in a semi final, and then thrashing Pakenham in the grand final.

Premiership coach Simon Gilson, who has won the Women’s “Coach of the Year” for the third time in a row, understands the true importance of Claire’s role in the team’s amazing improvement.

“Leadership is crucial in developing a group to believe they are capable of achieving success,“ he said.

Gilson recalls the early pioneering crew of Olinda women footballers as a “group of girls willing to learn and give it a crack with great energy”.

Claire provided this group with the direction and passion for the game.

As is the case with many sports leaders these days, Claire uses the captaincy to raise awareness about wider issues in her chosen recreational outlet and while she has a reputation for laying fierce tackles on the field.

She has also readily tackled big issues such as women’s mental health, wellbeing, gender

Two day cricket returns A big day of cricket for Monbulk on Saturday 21 Octber with a return to two day cricket.

Brad Trinnick starred in the 2nds with a brilliant knock of 147 off 166 balls. It was a joy to watch and a clinical display of power hitting.

Other highlights for the day was Mali Auty (wickets) and Daniel Cleary (three wickets) in the 1st XI, Tom Badgery and Steve Hooper 60* each in an unbeaten 132 opening partnership in the 4s and Brayden Brockwell making 89 in the 5ths.

Back luck, missed chances cost Tigers the match It was a feeling of “been here, done this” this week for the Upwey Ferntree Gully Tigers as they hosted the visiting Newport Rams in conditions that could be called unpleasant at best at Kings Park.

Battling through conditions much more recognised during the winter season, the Tigers faced off against a recently promoted Newport outfit that swept all senior men’s premierships last season in what could easily be described as the most complete season by a club in Baseball Victoria history.

Facing off against American import David Tongue, Upwey sent their ace Jarrod Turner to the mound in what quickly shaped up as a pitchers’ duel as two of the leagues best traded scoreless innings, with Turner finding his way out of a few jams while Tongue was rock solid for his part, utilising a mix of changing speeds and working ahead to ensure he kept his side in the game.

In what would become the turning point in the game, an out call on a heads up play from Wade McConnon was erroneously overturned, turning a potentially 2 out, 1 runner on situation into a 1 out, 2 on reality that quickly spiralled, as a mix of timely hits and another questionable call later in the inning saw 4 Newport runners cross the plate to open the scoring and stake the Rams to a 4-0 scoreline.

Not appearing at all flustered by the outburst the previous inning, Turner returned to the mound and quickly sat down the Rams in order, whilst Tongue fired another 0 to piece together 6 quality scoreless innings.

As both clubs went to their bullpens in the 7th innings, the Rams manufactured a 5th run of Wes de Jong, whilst Upwey were finally able to piece together hits with runners on to get on the scoreboard, putting up 2 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to trail 5-3 going into the 9th inning.

It was a case of too little, too late however as Newport’s closer slammed the door shut, sealing a 5-3 win that sees the Tigers

slip to 12th place on the ladder with a 1-2 record.

In other results, the Lady Tigers hosted Springvale and came out with a 13-8 win under cloudy skies in a game highlighted by strong offensive performances by both teams.

The win is the Lady Tigers third win for the year, which also sees them putting up 40 runs through their first 3 games in a showing that

has done nothing short of boosting the confidence of players and coach, whilst sitting on top of the ladder with a 3-0 record.

In other men’s scores, the Upwey 2nds overcame veteran hurler David Asp and multiple rain delays to run out 4-3 winners in a game featuring plenty of solid defensive efforts and heads up base running. With 3 wins from 3 games, the Tigers sit in equal 1st with Waverley and Geelong.

The men’s 3rds and 4ths both posted wins at home against Newport to continue their strong starts to the season, with a great mix of young players and veterans overcoming a fast-finishing Newport squad.

Regional Metro Gold and Black teams also posted wins which keeps them firmly in the mix moving into the 3rd week of the season for the lower grades.

In junior results, the Upwey U/18 State, U/18 Metro, U/14 Metro South and U/12 Metro East all recorded wins on Sunday morning, with the U/16 Metro East side the only junior team to unfortunately record a loss.

Looking ahead, the Lady Tigers are on the road to Pakenham Black next Saturday in a game that will pit 1st v 7th, whilst the Tiger 1sts and 2nds are on the road to face the fast starting Blackburn outfit at Billabong Park on Sunday, with the 3rds and 4ths at home against the Orioles, Regional Metro East at home against Research Maroon and Regional Metro South on the road to Springvale in what is certainly an important game for the back-to-back premiers as they look to correct their slow start in the new season

Round 1 for bowls season sees tough competition

By Jack Rollings Round 1 of the Saturday pennant marked the start of the home and away season on Saturday 21 October for the Monbulk Bowling Club.

The weather was threatening with dark clouds, but nothing came of it until after the games had finished. We played in warm temperatures, not much breeze, close to perfect.

Monbulk 1 played at home against Ferntree Gully 1. Both sides have synthetic bowling greens, so the home ground advantage wasn’t so great. The Monbulk side was just promoted to Division 2 at the end of last season, whereas Ferntree Gully were already in Division 2. So, Monbulk were the new arrivals. But during the off-season Monbulk recruited some good players. Robert Espenberger, Richard Sanzin, Tony French and Irma Turner all slotted easily into the top Monbulk side, adding much needed top-level game experience and skills depth.

Picture: SUPPLIED third, six shots all on the seventh end. For the rest of the game Jim’s team was able to pick up some good multiples and they didn’t drop any clangers. In the back half they grew their leading margin and only lost three ends. Monbulk won the rink comfortably 24 shots to 11.

Eric Markham’s team picked up a big four shotter on the first end, but after that, it was a close slog for the rest of the afternoon. The lead changed a few times and the margin was never more than three shots. In the final third, Monbulk won more ends, but one of the losses was a disappointing three shot clanger, giving away the lead and making it difficult to breach the margin. Monbulk lost the rink by the minimal margin 16 shots to 17.

Tony French’s team was up by five shots going into the halfway break, but then dropped a four shot clanger straight after the break. They were able to keep their noses in front until the 16th end when Ferntree Gully levelled at 15 shots all. Then, in the run home, Ferntree Gully managed to grab a few ends, with a couple of multiple scores, leaving Monbulk stranded.

Monbulk lost the rink 16 shots to 24.

Brian Smith’s team had a close first third.

Then they ran away with the middle third, creating a 13 shot lead. Then the final third was a seesaw affair with Ferntree Gully taking more

ends but never able to get back the lead from such a deficit. Monbulk won the rink 27 shots to 18.

Overall, Monbulk 1 defeated Ferntree Gully 83 shots to 70 with two rinks up. It’s only round 1, early days, but Monbulk is currently on top of the ladder.

Monbulk 2 played away against Boronia 3.

Klaus Eisele’s team came up against a strong team and struggled all day. They won seven ends to fourteen, but they also dropped some damaging clangers, including a five on the final end, just to rub salt into the wound.

Monbulk lost the rink 10 shots to 30.

Graeme Goller’s rink was the excitement centre. Monbulk trailed in the first third, then took the lead on the eighth end. In the middle third they won every end and grew the margin out to a nine shot lead. Then, in the race home, Boronia won a few ends and got within a single shot. Monbulk steadied, picked up a 3 shotter and hung on to win the rink 21 shots to 17.
