The State Government is boosting ambulance resources in Clyde North with the announcement of a new multi-million-dollar ambulance station coming to Matterhorn Drive.

Minister for Health Martin Foley and State Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale on Thursday 10 January announced Bowden Corporation has been appointed to construct a new multi-million-dollar facility.

The new 24-hour ambulance branch will feature a four-bay garage for ambulances, four rest and recline areas, training facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and improved security and car parking facilities.

The location of the new station allows easy access to main roads and major sites including schools, shopping precincts and community facilities.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale MP said that better emergency care for families living in Clyde North and surrounds was just around the corner with this “modern, advanced and well-located ambulance station”.

88 Lovett charges

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Former AFL footballer Andrew Lovett is facing scores of charges involving multiple alleged assaults and family violence order breaches against a woman in Berwick.

Lovett, 39, appeared by video link from remand prison at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 15 February.

His lawyer David Grace QC sought extra time to resolve the list of 88 charges, which include assaults, recklessly causing injury and property damage between February 2020 and June 2021.

He said following negotiation with prosecu-

tors, the charges would be reduced if a plea of guilty went ahead.

Police allege that Lovett became controlling and “physically violent” with his then-partner three months after they began a relationship.

It descended to “extremely toxic” levels, police stated in a summary tendered to the court.

Many of the assaults were in alleged defiance of family violence intervention orders.

In January 2021, after the victim blocked his access to their joint credit card, Lovett allegedly abused her over the phone, including a message: “I hope you, your mum and you(r ) nan passes away you c***. Typical c***. F*** I hate you. Dog.”

At the time, her grandmother was seriously ill.

According to police, Lovett, accusing her of a text showing she was ‘cheating’ on him, threw her i-Phone into the bathroom tiled wall where she was showering last March. The phone reportedly shattered into glass and plastic Lovett denied to police that he then allegedly punched her several times to the head, and that he kicked her to the stomach while she lay on the floor.

The victim alleged she blacked out before waking to see blood pouring from her face running into the shower drain.

Some of the other alleged assaults included being picked up and thrown by Lovett into a pool fully clothed, struck to the face with a purported shoe, and her face slammed into a steering wheel while driving, police stated.

Several persistent family violence order breaches and stalking offences occurred while on bail between last August-December, police allege.

Recently, Lovett had unsuccessfully applied for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

Lovett played 88 games for Essendon between 2005-’09.

His next scheduled hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court is on 10 March.

SES takes steps for mental health

By Jamie Salter Narre Warren SES members recently took part in the Stadium Stomp to help raise awareness for mental heath issues, joining forces with Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp and the Emergency Services Foundation (ESF).

ESF supports the emergency management sector to prevent, promote and address the incidence and impact of mental injury for its 125,000 volunteers and paid staff.

Narre Warren SES members participated in the ultimate stair climb on Saturday 12 February at the Melbourne Cricket Ground - boasting a seating capacity of 100,024.

Crew leader Tracey Hayward participated in the event for the first time alongside Bryce Wickham and Amy MacDonald.

Tracey said it was a worthwhile challenge.

“The Emergency Service Foundation supports the mental wellbeing of emergency service personnel and it’s amazing what we go through,“ she said.

“When people are running away from incidents, emergency services are running towards it.“ It took the Narre Warren SES members just under two hours to complete the full course, covering more than 7,300 stairs.

Tracey said her legs were still sore.

“You’re climbing up all these stairs and you’re taking breaks, chatting to peope from different organisations like the CFA, so it was like a bonding experience,“ Tracey said.

“It was just amazing to see everyone come together.“

E-scooter tragedy

By Jamie Salter A 20-year-old Narre Warren man died after being struck by a car whilst trying to cross Princes Highway on an electric scooter about 5.15pm on Thursday 10 February.

The driver of the car was not injured and stopped to assist.

They were spoken to by police and cleared of any wrongdoing.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives attended the scene to assist in determining the specific circumstances of the collision.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who may have dashcam footage, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au

Witness welfare probed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An inquiry has been launched into the management of witnesses’ welfare by IBAC in the wake of the sudden death of former Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon.

Victoria Parliament’s Integrity and Oversight Committee announced on 10 February that it would hold public hearings on the issue.

It will examine IBAC (the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission) and other state integrity watchdogs - the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner, the Victorian Inspectorate and the Victorian Ombudsman.

Committee chair and Labor MP Jill Hennessy said the committee unanimously resolved on 9 February to make the issue its “focus” in its annual review and monitoring of the integrity agencies’ performances.

Ms Stapledon, 58, was said by friends to have been rocked by an IBAC inquiry into alleged corruption by Casey councillors.

She was found dead in a car in Stringybark Drive about 12.30pm on Tuesday 18 January.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious, Victoria Police stated.

Her close friend Kerril Burns was among several who said the two-year IBAC inquiry had a deep impact on Ms Stapledon.

She called for a thorough investigation of the treatment of IBAC witnesses.

At the IBAC Operation Sandon inquiry in 2020, Ms Stapledon conceded that she’d failed to properly declare a conflict of interest at council – namely a $25,000 state election donation from property developer John Woodman who had a stake in rezoning industrial land in Cranbourne West.

After the 2016 council election, Ms Staple-

don also omitted declaring being part of Mr Woodman’s $100,000 campaign for a group of “like-minded” candidates.

She had said she was uncertain whether Mr Woodman had funded the campaign.

The inquiry also examined her meeting with Mr Woodman shortly before being elected as mayor in 2018.

“Mr Woodman has never asked me to do anything for him,” Ms Stapledon told the inquiry.

“I need to be very clear there: he has done nothing improper in that regard.”

An IBAC spokesperson said that IBAC “welcomes the opportunity to participate in the IOC’s regular annual review of integrity agency performance, and answer questions on witness welfare and other aspects of IBAC’s role”.

The inquiry’s report is due to be tabled in Parliament by 23 June.

Exciting new era for the Cranbourne railway line The new train station at Merinda Park is now ready for passengers a year ahead of schedule as part of the Cranbourne Line Duplication.

The opening coincided with a new train timetable beginning Sunday 13 February, thanks to eight kilometres of track duplication between Cranbourne and Dandenong, meaning trains every 10 minutes on average in the morning peak for passengers travelling from Cranbourne, Lynbrook and Merinda Park stations.

The new station includes a new pedestrian under-pass, allowing locals to safely cross the rail line.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was joined by local MPs Pauline Richards (Cranbourne), Gary Maas (Narre Warren South), Gabrielle Williams (Dandenong), Sonya Kilkenny (Carrum) and Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan on Sunday to mark the occasion.

The Premier said he was thrilled with the progress of work on the Cranbourne line.

“We’ve promised to remove dangerous and congested level crossings, so you can spend less time in traffic and more time with your loved ones, and we’re smashing our targets,” Mr Andrews said.

“15 level crossings are being removed on the Cranbourne line, with 13 already gone for good, and two more will make the line level crossing-free by 2025, changing the way people live, work and travel.”

More than 22 kilometres of steel, 20,000 tonnes of ballast and 16,000 concrete sleepers have been used to duplicate the single line track between Cranbourne and Dandenong, including building two new rail bridges over Eumemmering Creek and Abbotts Road, with the duplication paving the way for a future rail extension to Clyde.

Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said she was excited for local residents to use the new facilities.

“Our community has been counting down for these extra train services, the removal of the level crossing and the new station at Merinda Park, and I’m thrilled they’re now able to enjoy these tremendous benefits,” Ms Richards said.

It also comes as locals and businesses in Dandenong South celebrate the removal of the boom gates at Greens Road, with trains running over two new 600-metre rail bridges.

School celebrates century

By Jamie Salter It was a momentous day for Hampton Park Primary School as it celebrated its 100th anniversary over the weekend.

The sun was shining as school tours were led throughout the day, showcasing the campus amenities and the secrets to its ongoing prosperity.

School principal Liz Davey said the event was an “outstanding success“.

“We were really pleased with the diversity of people who came - we had a good representation of people who have attended the school over the years,“ Ms Davey said.

“People who attended in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s caught up and I know some of them had dinner afterwards, which shows this provided that community event to continue that linkage.

“This was our launch event and we’re going to hold more, smaller events for the students throughout the year.“ The Leonie King STEM Centre was officially named and opened by Leonie King herself, who was instrumental in its development.

The school’s centenary garden was also officially opened with plants found in the four corners of the garden representing native Australia, Pacific Isles and New Zealand, Middle Asia and East Asia.

The four quadrants of the garden were named after staff members who have had a significant impact on the school; Bromwyn Minihan Mews, Denise Morris Motorway, Lyn Perry Place, and Michael Long Lane.

In the centre of the garden is the same Peppercorn tree that was planted 100 years ago.

Once visitors worked up an appetite following the tours, they enjoyed a barbecue as well as scones and tea on campus.

Another highlight of the event was the launch of the Student Voices book which had author Crispian Deacon meet with people who

have been involved with the school since the very beginning.

The book is broken up into each decade and depicts what happened around that time and the memories of those who attended the school.

“The idea was to bring together the whole community, it was for anybody who had a connection along the way,“ Ms Davey said.

Copies of the book were available to purchase on the day and those who would still like to buy a copy can get in contact with the school.

People also still have the chance to sign the guest book which will be buried in a time capsule.

The 100th anniversary celebration was held on Saturday 12 February from 11am to 3pm.

Helping homeless friend

By Jamie Salter Hallam man Brett Barrow is launching a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to help his homeless friend get back on his feet.

With the funds raised, Mr Barrow plans to buy his friend a van that can be converted into a home.

“He carries his whole life in three Aldi bags and he sleeps at the park,“ Mr Barrow said.

“He is a great person stuck between the cracks and unsure what tomorrow holds - he is truly is a deserving person, and I wish I could do more for him.“ Mr Barrow met his friend through his latest

“I’ve spoken to him about staying at mine but he doesn’t want to impose and I thought the next best thing was a van.“ Mr Barrow said ideally the van will have a bed and a fridge which his friend could use to get to work.

“If it needs work, I can put in time and a bit of money,“ Mr Barrow said.

“He doesn’t want a flash camper van, just somewhere he can call home where he can leave his stuff and a place to sleep.

“He needs somewhere to call home and a

vehicle to get to work - he can work casually if he had the opportunity.“ Mr Barrow’s friend pays for a motel room once a fortnight just so he can take a shower.

Having a van “would change his life“, and give him a level of independence, Mr Barrow said.

“A lot of people probably think it’s a luxury and not a home, but it’s everything he needs to get back on his feet - I can’t stress enough how worthy he is of help.“ Mr Barrow said he hoped people would hear his plea for help.

On Wednesday 16 February it will be exactly 39 years since the Ash Wednesday fires.

I was called to bring the bus out to Coorinda School Camp that night to help evacuate the Bayswater South Primary School children to the Gembrook oval.

The camp was owned by Chris and Gwen Wale. When I arrived, Gwen had the teachers and children ready to board the bus, each with their pillows.

Gwen counted the children on the bus to see they had the right number of children and stayed with us when we got to the oval.

The kids all fell asleep on the bus that night.

The next morning at around 8am Gwen got the children and teachers out of the bus for breakfast, a play and a stretch.

When we left the oval to go back to their school, Gwen was still with us.

When we arrived back at the school, Gwen counted them all again and made sure every child’s parent was there to pick them up.

The parents all thanked the both of us.

The teachers, parents and myself reckon she was some sort of an angel.

By Jamie Salter A family is pleading for information on the whereabouts of their 19 year old son Samuel, who has gone missing following a planned camping trip.

Samuel was last seen at his Lysterfield South home on 9 February.

It is believed he could be imitating the main character in the novel Into the Wild.

The story is about a young man who goes off-grid on his own in the bush and dies after eating a poisonous plant.

Narre Warren Police Station senior constable Imogen Brill said a note from Sam was uncovered at his home saying he was “going walkabout”.

“He’s potentially taking inspiration from that narrative in that book. We are aware of the ending of that book and it does play into our concerns but that’s not the reason we’re searching for him,” Snr Cst Brill said.

Sam’s car has been located 20km outside of Swan Hill and police believe he is travelling on foot.

He was then picked up by hitchhikers and spent the night camping in his tent in their backyard.

The hitchhikers took him to a town called Nyah, about 20km north west of the Swan Hill area, police said.

Snr Cst Brill said local units were searching campsites and making enquiries with local residents to see if they’ve seen Sam. “He doesn’t have any cooking equipment, food, money or a mobile phone, so we’re concerned he is in a remote location, he’s not able to contact anyone and doesn’t have enough possessions to be able to last a long period of time in the bush.”

Sam’s mum Elizabeth Thompson said she started to get concerned by February 11 after Sam didn’t answer his phone.

“Our concern is none of Sam’s friends know where he is and he hasn’t answered any of the numerous messages that have gone to his phone from his friends or his family,“ she said.

She said the note that was found was “cryptic”.

“Yes, he mentioned he was going walkabout and he said he would be back, but because it was inside the book and he was taken by the story of that book when he read it a year ago, that has caused us great concern.”

“We don’t know what’s going through his head.”

“The emotions of all of his family and friends have been a fair roller-coaster since Friday and we just want him safe.”

“We really want him to give us a call or a text because we all love him and miss him.”

Sam is in possession of a Blue Pioneer hiking pack, a sleeping bag, and a red and black tent, purchased before he went to Swan Hill.

Police believe he is heading west towards Mildura and are making enquiries in the area.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact their local police station, Narre Warren Police Station on (03) 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“Any information at this point is greatly appreciated from members of the public,“ police said.

‘Red shirts’ re-opened

By Cam Lucadou-Wells South Eastern Metropolitan MP and ex-ALP powerbroker Adem Somyurek has won a narrow vote in State Parliament for a revived investigation of the ‘red shirts’ rort.

The vote was won after his former factional ally and Labor back-bencher Kaushaliya Vaghela sensationally crossed the floor in the Legislative Council on 9 February.

The red shirts affair refers to Labor’s misuse of $388,000 of taxpayer funds on electorate office staff campaigning in the 2014 state election.

The motion referred the allegations again to the Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass, in the hope of her referring them to IBAC’s Operation Watts inquiry.

It also referred allegations of the role of Premier Daniel Andrews in ‘red shirts’, branchstacking of all ALP factions, the Premier’s social media unit and the stacking of “ALP activists” in the public service.

Mr Somyurek told Parliament that Mr Andrews - whose Mulgrave seat is a short drive from Mr Somyurek’s former Dandenong office - “crossed the line” in “designing” the redshirts scheme.

“At the end of the day what we had was that we were desperate to win … he did something well beyond what he should have. He crossed the line. He designed this system.

“He told me personally, ‘You’ve got to take part in this process whether you want to win or not’, and that reflected his mentality at the time.”

He and 24 other MPs were “forced by the leadership” to sign off on false time-sheets six months in advance for their electorate officers, Mr Somyurek said.

“We signed false documents saying that our staff worked in our offices. They worked for the

ALP campaigning, right? That flipped an election.

“I am very scared about the red shirts issue.

I am very scared, so if this gets through today … I will be going home and not being able to sleep at night.

“But there is a principle on the line.”

Ms Glass in an earlier report referred to the red-shirt scheme as an “artifice” but didn’t recommend charges.

Her investigation was constrained by a lack of coercive powers to compel MPs as witnesses and subpoena documents, Mr Somyurek said.

Mr Somyurek recently admitted to Operation Watts of branch-stacking by him and his Moderate Labor faction, as well as being in-

volved in ‘red shirts’.

He was gone from the party soon after the branch-stacking allegations broke on 60 Minutes in June 2020.

Mr Andrews has consistently denied knowing about the rort.

Opposition Upper House leader David Davis accused the government of “hindering” a Victoria Police investigation, which cleared more than a dozen Labor MPs of wrongdoing.

“The truth of the matter is that Daniel Andrews and many in this government should be in jail,” he told Parliament.

“They took the money, they stole the money, the theft happened, the crooked stuff happened—and they should be in jail.

“If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, and in this case you can see that Labor has a lot to fear because it is corrupt to the core.”

Against the motion, Labor MP Nina Taylor said the Victorian Ombudsman and IBAC had the resources and legislation needed to investigate alleged corruption.

“It is absolutely appropriate that they determine the scope of these investigations free from attempted political interference.”

Reason Party MP Fiona Patten took issue with the “lack of faith” shown in the Ombudsman, and with Mr Somyurek’s “absolutely selfserving” motion.

“I am also troubled that we would say that our independent organisations are not good enough, that we have to direct them, that it is up to us as politicians to direct those independent organisations.”

Greens leader Samantha Ratnam opposed “a person who is subject to a very serious investigation by IBAC and the Ombudsman bringing a motion … seemingly to change the terms of reference”.

After crossing the Upper House floor, Ms Vaghela is predicted to either resign or be kicked out of the ALP. She and a swathe of MPs from Mr Somyurek’s faction had lost ALP pre-selection ahead of the 2022 state election.

In a statement she said the Socialist Left faction and other factions must be investigated.

“Branch stacking is endemic in the ALP, and I understand it has been for decades, therefore what happened at IBAC was a grave injustice because it was discriminatory.

“I am a migrant in this country and thought that everyone was equal when it comes to the law, apparently some people are more equal than others.”

Mr Andrews has pointedly refused to comment on Mr Somyurek and the motion.

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

Pearcedale produce appeal

By Marcus Uhe If you’re in need of some fresh home-grown produce and enjoy supporting the local community, be sure to swing by Julieann’s Petite Pantry in Pearcedale.

The pantry stocks a bounty of home grown fruits and vegetables from her abundance of trees and vines, including pears, apples, peaches, passionfruits, nectarines, oranges, figs, tamarillos and cherry tomatoes, along with packaged foods and sanitary products, and welcomes contributions from locals.

Julieann, who asked to not have her surname published, has been a participant in local swap-meets for years and was inspired by other similar projects in her network of swappers.

“We always have excess of everything,” Julieann said. “When I’ve had excess I’ve put some out the front of my place.

“Ladies from swap meet started their own pantries and I thought I might as well give it a go. There’s going to be people who need fresh produce and groceries.

“It’s whatever people can bring and swap; maybe it’s just a packet of pasta and sauce.

“It can be for anyone in the community, it doesn’t have to be for needy families.”

Located at the front fence of Julieann’s farm, the cupboard is discreetly shaded by trees in an effort to ensure that no one feels ashamed or embarrassed about being seen accessing the produce on offer.

What started with just one initial cupboard has expanded to include a shelving unit due the overflow of products, and an old clothing rack to hang herb plants, meticulously labelled to ensure everyone knows what they’re selecting, with pots donated by those accessing the

pantry as a way to give back.

The farm that Julieann has called home for the last eight years could act as a greengrocer on its own, such is the scope of the produce on offer.

And what doesn’t get collected becomes used as compost and fertiliser, or is fed to the goats, sheep and chickens that share the property, in order to minimise wastage.

She grew up in Melbourne’s suburbs but was told that she should be living on a farm by people “since I was a kid.”

“I like being able to go into the yard, pick something and eat it. That’s how it is.”

The pantry itself is sporting a fresh design, courtesy of Pearcedale artist Janice Mills, inscribed with the motto “take what you need, leave what you can.”

“What I love most is sharing.

“In a world where a lot of the focus is on money and we’re frequently consumed by the need for money, we make this a cash-free event.

“I’ve had contacts from people thanking me for starting the pantry, who have said ‘I’ve got a friend who pays for the supermarket with afterpay who uses the pantry’.

“I just want other people to be able to enjoy that freshness, and to spread the message of kindness and sharing without expecting anything back.

“It only takes one person to start something small like this to make a difference to their community.“ The pantry is free for everyone in the community to access and contribute to from the outskirts of Julieann’s 10-acre property on East Rd, Pearcedale.

Noonan’s new radio program looks to make waves

By Marcus Uhe Michelle Anne Noonan’s new Casey Radio program is bringing her love of poetry to the airwaves in the South East.

Ms Noonan launched ‘Poets Corner’, a Sunday afternoon hour of poetry power, in January, platforming emerging creatives from around the area to showcase their skills, and discuss the art.

Ms Noonan has written poetry since her kinder days, having grown up immersing herself in Shakespeare and the language of Old English, despite the extra research required to find out what it was she was actually reading.

She ran a poetry group called ‘Poetry Pastures’ and has written multiple books, including ‘Silence Speaks Beauty’ and ‘Sensual Whispers’.

“I just adore writing poetry, going outdoors in the middle of the weekend, lying down a picnic rug and just writing,” Ms Noonan said of her relationship to the literacy.

“Throughout high school I wrote poetry so much. I wrote poems for people in relationships when they didn’t know what to say cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Ms Noonan coordinates hosting the show as a volunteer around her full-time work commitments in customer relations.

Each week the show looks to highlight a different topic; Her first show coincided with January 26 and was Australia Day themed, and in the coming weeks her show will spot-

light love (20 February), hilarious rhymes (27 February), mental health awareness (6 March) and indie poets (13 March).

One of the aims of the show is to promote the use of poetry as an effective coping mechanism for people struggling with their mental health.

Ms Noonan is hoping that kids and teenagers follow her lead and begin putting pen to paper, as a way to deal with the ups and downs of adolescence which have been compounded by lockdowns and Covid-19 restrictions.

“Kids experience frightening things.

“Sitting down with a pen and just getting it onto a piece of paper can really help.”

There are no limitations on the style or genre of the poem, with poets all abilities encouraged to submit their work and grow the community of creative writers in the area.

Hurley bids farewell

By Marcus Uhe Endeavour Hills’ Thomas Mitchell Primary School has bid farewell to their founding Principal, John Hurley, who retired on Friday 11 February.

The school’s founding father was celebrated with a special assembly on Friday morning before the students put on a parade for him with music and presented him with their artwork.

Mr Hurley was touched by the effort put in by all involved in the festivities.

“It was just absolutely spectacular,” Mr Hurley said. “The amount of work that everyone went to make it a lovely day for me was amazing.

“The fact that everyone was so involved in it was absolutely fantastic.”

Mr Hurley said that he knew that there would be a ceremony or celebration of some kind to mark the occasion, but he was pleasantly taken aback by the extent of it, culminating in the afternoon as his staff provided him with a guard of honour as he left the school grounds for the final time.

“It (the guard of honour) made it really difficult to wave goodbye.”

Speaking in the following days after his send-off, the former principal said that he was still coming to terms with being retired.

“I have made no plans yet. I’m still wakingup and thinking, ‘I’ve got to get up to do this and that.”

Nishan was then employed in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at Prince Philip Dental Hospital as a House Officer.

He treated complex cases and medically compromised children, as well as orthodontic patients under the supervision of his orthodontic professor.

He volunteered his time with a cleft lip and palate team which went to Cambodia.

Upon returning to New Zealand, he registered with the New Zealand Dental Council and The General Dental Council (UK).

After a few years in private general dental practice, Nishan completed his Doctoral in Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) at the University of Adelaide.

His area of research involved the investigation of dental, skeletal and facial complex changes with extraction orthodontic therapy, and assessment of the resultant aesthetic changes of the face.

Nishan is also a Member of the Royal College of Surgeon and the secretary of the Australasian Begg Society of Orthodontists.

By Jamie Salter Trains are now running over the new rail bridge in Berwick as works continue to remove the level crossing at Clyde Road.

Pakenham Line trains have resumed service along the new rail bridge after buses replaced trains between Westall and Pakenham.

Trucks have moved 36,000 cubic metres of material to excavate a road underpass beneath the rail line, which could fill more than 14 Olympic sized swimming pools.

The new road underpass will open in late February.

Weighing in at 650 tonnes, a crawler crane had to be delivered in pieces to the level cross-

ing removal site.

The crane was used to lift the new rail bridge into place.

The rail bridge is made up of 12 steel bridge beams each weighing eight tonnes and measuring 25 metres long.

The Clyde Road level crossing will be removed later this month, with the road remaining closed to vehicles between Enterprise Avenue and the Langmore Lane/Mansfield Street intersection until 11.59pm on Sunday 20 February.

The next major milestone will see vehicles drive along a boom gate free Clyde Road from Monday 21 February.

Public transport users will now be able to see how many free parks are available at a train station before they leave home, thanks to new smart road and parking technology.

The technology has been installed at Berwick and Beaconsfield stations as part of a trial to detect which parking spaces are in use, providing real-time information about where spaces are available and making planning journeys easier.

Live car parking information will be shared through a dedicated Smart Car Parking Trial app, under the Victorian Government’s Car Parks for Commuters program.

The program aims to deliver 11,000 new and upgraded car parking spaces across Victoria.

Roadside electronic sign boards displaying live car parking information will also be placed near car park entrances to help commuters find a spot.

Eastern Victoria Member Harriet Shing said the technology would provide smoother journeys for the whole community.

“Whether you travel by car or public transport, we are improving the transport network for our growing community and ensuring people can get to where they need to go safely,” she said.

Technology has also been installed on arterial roads across Berwick to help address congestion in real time and improve travel for drivers.

Victorian Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll said the upgrades will make it easier for locals to plan their trips and ensure they spend more time at their destination and with loved ones.

“Technology being rolled out across our transport network is helping ensure people get where they need to go easily – no matter what forms of transport they use,” he said.

DDCA rivals settle score

By Tyler Lewis Dandenong District Cricket Association powerhouses Springvale South and Buckley Ridges have met to respectfully settle its indiscretions of recent seasons.

The two clubs have always been competitive and shared a healthy rivalry, but in recent times, the rivalry has toyed and then fallen across the line. The Bloods and the Bucks have had a plethora of differences in the past, but have trickled over the boundary in recent years.

The clubs released a statement via its social media channels on Tuesday morning: “Dear Supporters, on behalf of Buckley Ridges Cricket Club and Springvale South Cricket Club committees, we are addressing all club supports jointly to advice that we have met together as club representatives to discuss the several issues that have occurred between the two clubs over the past seasons, and how we can move forward together without incidence,” the statement read.

“The two clubs have jointly agreed that it is important that we provide a safer and more inclusive environment without incidents moving forward, and that whilst we respect the competitiveness of the players, that we also ensure that we remain respectful of each other off the ground.

“We are committed to change, and we are asking all supporters and players to adhere to some simple guidelines that will ensure that our club’s games will be competitive but enjoyable for all involved and that we can build an improved relationship moving forward”.

The requested guidelines are as follows: “Ensure that there are no derogatory comments on social media regarding players and/or supporters of either clubs,” the statement read.

“Take responsibility for your own actions at the game and ensure that you behave in a respectful manner towards the opposition club, supporters and umpires.

“If you see your mate moving outside the guidelines, take a moment to pull him up and remind him of the required behaviour”.

The statement then concluded by encouraging the clubs to meet in unity after games for a cold drink and celebrate the talent both clubs have to offer on the field.

“We also encourage our supporters and players to support the opposition when you are a guest at their ground by enjoying a cold drink after the game and celebrating the game of cricket and the exciting players that we both have”.

“You have to have fun and it is crazy that some of these boundaries have been crossed, I for one as president of Buckley won’t tolerate it (poor behaviour), there is historical issues and people just lose it.

“I feel I need to lead and take control from our end as much as possible, it was great that Springy South initiated this meeting and we have now joined in this to stand together.

“It’s great for cricket I think,” De Silva said.

Springvale South committee chairman Tim Cockayne also spoke to the Gazette and was in the process for both clubs joining arms in a smoother off-field relationship.

“Over a number of years there have been a number of incidents between more the supporters of the clubs,” he said.

“The relationship had deteriorated over a period of time and we just felt it was time it was corrected.

“They (Buckley Ridges) accepted the approach gleefully and agreed that it would be a great thing to sit down and correct that behaviour and make it better for all supporters.

“We moved positively together from that moment, it was actually a really simple exercise (because) we all wanted the same thing.

“We have a great respect for each other on the ground and we want to have a better respect for each other off the ground, both clubs are looking for the same thing.

“The guys at Buckley were fantastic, we agreed on a couple actions, one of them was to write that letter, the next was to speak to all our players about it, and the third was to put actions in place of words at the games,” Cockayne said.

Cockayne revealed the games are still ‘highly anticipated’ between the two clubs and – despite the issues – have still been enjoyable, but the clubs are just now working in arms to create a better off-field environment.

“They were always fun, always exciting and highly anticipated,” he said.

“Unfortunately there were always those side comments that were negative around the way those supporters spoke of the other club.

“We want to have a really strong and competitive game every time we play Buckley Ridges, we want to give them no quarter, but we can do that with respect.

“Both our clubs want to welcome families, wives and females to the games and this is just a step we need to take,” Cockayne said.

The Bucks and the Bloods are set to play this Sunday in the rescheduled opening round of the DDCA season.

Woolamai wonders recognised with life memberships The Woolamai and District Racing Club is this season celebrating its 25th anniversary following the amalgamation of the Woolamai Racing Club, Phillip Island Racing Club and the Wonthaggi Racing Club in 1996.

All clubs formerly made use of the track, with the bringing together of the three entities showcasing the very best that all three clubs had to offer.

To help celebrate the wonderful history of racing in the region, the Woolamai and District Racing Club acknowledged some of the great contributors to racing by presenting them with life memberships at its cup-day meeting on Saturday 5 February.

Here’s a brief look at just some of the work put in by the five worthy recipients.

Bev Carmichael This familiar face at Woolamai has devoted hours to the running of the club as secretary for 18 of the past 25 seasons. Bev was largely responsible for the growth of the club during the 2000’s and oversaw the clubs biggest capital project - the redevelopment of the administration building and jockeys rooms.

Bev was the last secretary of the Wonthaggi Racing Club prior to the amalgamation of the club in 1996.

Robert Carmichael A huge contributor to the club who has been cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the amalgamated Woolamai and District Racing Club, life memberships were presented to five stalwarts of the club. Carmichael has been president for the last 14 years, and was the last president of Wonthaggi Racing Club prior to the amalgamation in 1996.

As a horse trainer he has prepared scores of winners at the Woolamai track including Just Jordie, who holds the record for most wins at Woolamai.

Don Matheson Another wonderful contributor to Woolamai

racing who has been involved at the club for 50 years. Matheson bought a farm nearby in 1972 and has been on the committee for the best part of four decades. He has worked in numerous roles in the racing industry including barrier attendant and judge. Now in his 80’s, he continues to provide a watchful eye over the racecourse and reserve with daily patrols.

Helen Matheson Helen has been involved with Woolamai since moving to the town in 1972. She has been the assistant secretary of the Woolamai and District Racing Club for the last 25 years.

Helen was the last secretary of the Woolamai Racing Club before the amalgamation in 1996. The long-time contributor to the club continues to provide valuable assistance with banking, cleaning of clubrooms and pavilions, gardening and washing of saddle cloth‘s after each meeting.

Cefn Price Price is a legendary trainer in the region who has won a remarkable 30 trainer’s premierships at Woolamai, and has also trained more winners at Woolamai than any other trainer.

Price had horses that won on every track in Gippsland and Melbourne over the years and was president of the Phillip Island Racing Club from 1969 to 1977.

Swans growing in stature

By Tyler Lewis The excitement is beginning to bubble for Casey-South Melbourne.

After defeating Ringwood on Saturday, not only are the Swans poised splendidly to make the final eight, but are also mounting an assault on the top four.

The Swans took on the Rams in what loomed as a danger game for the finals bound unit and, after losing its two leading run scorers – Ashley Chandrasinghe and Luke Manders – the Casey-South Melbourne outfit was required to show its depth.

It did so luminously, with a spread of contributors across the park.

Ruwantha Kellepotha strolled to the middle at a cross-road in the Swans innings, at 5/126, with his side having just lost 2/3.

The talented all-rounder played his best hand with the stick all year, maturely carving 56 from 50 balls.

His partnership with Luke Shelton (27) shifted Casey-South Melbourne from a cross-road, to miles ahead of the game, posting 10/234.

As he has done all year, Nathan Lambden got the Swans off to a lively start, dismissing the dangerous David King in the opening over.

Kellepotha was in the game again to cap off his performance with the bat by dominating in the field.

At times the crafty leg-spinner made the Rams batters look foolish on his way to 4/28 from eight overs.

If 56 from 50 rocks and 4/28 wasn’t enough to confirm the three Jack Ryder Medal votes, Kellepotha also threw the stumps down with a direct-hit run out in the final stages of the match.

The Swans steam-rolled through the Rams for 10/114 to gain not only the win, but the valuable bonus point that keeps them in the hunt for a home final.

Casey-South Melbourne coach Will Carr has seen plenty of Kellepotha in recent years, with their mutual ties with DDCA club Berwick where he won the Alan Wookey Medal in season 2021/22.

Carr revealed he was hardly shocked by the

performance his star all-rounder delivered on Saturday.

“Not surprised, but at the same time very pleased,” he said.

“The last month in particular he has been bowling well without the rewards he has deserved; to get a four wicket-haul on Saturday is a reward for effort.

“With the bat it was as clinical a 56 that you will see. (He was) Under pressure when he came in, I think it was 5/160 odd, he didn’t make an error, and it was clinical.

“He did what I know he can do; he can play technically correct and knock the ball around and he can find the boundary when needed.

“And in the field as well, I mean a direct hit run out on top of that; he is brilliant in the circle or in the outfield.

“We saw all that Kellepotha can offer on the weekend.”

Carr was pleased that the victory came from contributions across the board, rather than the typical fire-cracker start from his two opening bats.

“It was something we spoke about, again,

we’re trying to improve as a team and as individuals,” he said.

“You’ve got benchmarks around the competition that have been strong for a long period of time, we look at their attributes and good sides are able to have players to stand up when in need.

“You look at a St Kilda or Melbourne, if one of – or two – of their top four miss out, they have a capable number five, six or seven that generally stands up and you know can contribute.

“From that point of view, it was really pleasing that we had guys outside of our top two run scorers contribute, particularly down the order at seven and eight with Kellapotha and Sperling putting on 60 odd, it was very pleasing,” Carr said.

With Nortchote suffering a defeat to Geelong, the door has opened for the Swans to sneak into the top four, particularly if it’s to defeat the Dragons in a fortnights time.

But first, the Swans will need to overcome Kingston Hawthorn this Saturday at Casey Fields.

Tooradin champion O’Hare smacks a seventh century

By David Nagel It would be hard to find a more respected figure in the WGCA Premier Division than Tooradin (7/200) captain Cal O’Hare – who added a seventh century to an already glittering career against Merinda Park (166) on Saturday.

The six-time club champion - and premiership player - held the Seagulls’ innings together with a masterfully-crafted 111, which included nine fours…and only came to an end in the last of the home side’s allotted 40 overs.

The Seagulls needed an innings of substance, taking on a dangerous Cobras’ line up that has belted more runs than any other team this season.

And O’Hare delivered when it mattered most…being at the crease for 198 of his teams’ 200 runs before tea.

O’Hare, one of the most popular figures in the WGCA since making his debut in 2007/08, has thoroughly earned his reputation as one of the great all-rounders of the competition.

He has made over 6000 runs, and taken almost 300 wickets…a rare double that would have been achieved by now if not for some serious injuries in recent years that have dulled his bowling prowess.

Quite remarkably, given his stunning career figures, the likeable big-man may be heading for the best batting season of his career.

After an early-season failure the Gulls’ leader has now scored 398 runs in the Premier Division, averaging 56.86 from the topof-the-order….with three games still to play.

Tooradin coughed and spluttered around their inspirational skipper on the weekend - not a good idea during Covid - with Tom Hussey (9), Russ Lehman (6) and Brad Butler (1) all pulling off the pads with the score at 3/58.

Aaron Avery (12), Josh Lownds (12) and Dylan Sutton (21) all came and went, before youngster Tyler Evans (17 not out) finally outlasted his captain.

With red-ink in sight, O’Hare showed his team-first mentality by being stumped in the final over before the tea break.

Jaskaran Singh (3/37) and Thuduwage Ku-

mara (2/36) were best of the bowlers for the Cobras.

Merinda Park is a very fast scoring side, making three scores of over 200 this season, with a 6/198 and 4/199 also quite impressive.

Although posting 200…Tooradin would need to bowl the Cobras out to be assured of getting the points.

That looked an unlikely task early with Dan McCalman (32), Kumara (36) and Manu Goraya (42) leading the Cobras to a powerful position at 2/98.

But from there the wheels well and truly fell off, with the Cobras failing to handle their biggest pressure test of their season.

The main examination came from speedster Brad Butler (5/37) – the quickest bowler

in the WGCA – who tore through the Cobras mid-to-lower-order with ease.

Butler was expensive from his six overs… but most bowlers against the Cobras usually are!

Butler’s wicket-taking skills were important, with the Cobras sticking to a gettable run-rate all the way through to Josh Phillips (9) edging one through to Ben Parrott off the bowling of Kallan Braid-Ball (1/16) to end the game.

The Cobras are dangerous…but the Seagulls had O’Hare – one of the most respected figures in the WGCA. The now top-of-the-ladder Seagulls face a massive trip to Pakenham this week, while the fifth-placed Cobras can keep their finals hopes alive with a bounce-back home victory against reigning-champs Cardinia.

In other games this week, Pakenham (2/160) announced itself as a genuine premiership contender with an eight-wicket win over Kooweerup (159).

Skipper Dale Tormey (3/29 and 55 not out) and Zac Chaplin (54 not out) were best for the Lions, while Chris Bright (51) played a crucial hand for the Demons.

And reigning-premier Cardinia (6/192) was pushed hard by the winless Carlisle Park (5/189).

Anurudda Fonseka (83) and Ravi Kodithuwakku (52) were terrific for the Vikings, while Alex Nooy (61), skipper Jake Prosser (36 not out) and Leigh Patterson (34) were instrumental in guiding the Bulls home.

Cranbourne Meadows forfeited its game against Clyde, with both teams receiving six points due to the newly implemented Covidrule.

Snipers start with a bang

By David Nagel The finest flingers of tungsten have returned to the oche with the South West Gippsland Darts League back up and running for 2022.

The Snipers had the radar dialled in, giving the slow-starting Middels a 12-3 thumping on night one of competition.

Other big winners included the Warriors over Gembrook and Rebels over Mud Rats, while the close match in the opening round of the season saw Just Social score a thrilling 8-7 win over Paky One. Competition is played on Tuesday nights with the action beginning at 7.30pm and taking place at the following home venues for each team: Cardinia Club – Paky One, Warriors, Gembrook, Snipers and Mud Rats. Kooweerup Hotel – Just Social. Middels Restaurant – Middels. Warragul Railway Hotel – Rebels.

Cranbourne bounce back CRANBOURNE BOWLS The top side was switched on and ready to play on Saturday and defeated Monbulk by a massive 56 shots after a disappointing one-shot loss last week at home.

The mid-week top side also continued its winning streak with another great win this time against Keysborough winning by 17 shots.

With finals fast approaching all teams are looking for wins in the final rounds to secure their positions on the ladder.

Side 1 - Division 2 Sec 5 After last week’s one-shot loss disappointment head coach Lyn Quigg invited team mate Peter Elgar to address the players before the game.

The address started off with something about the number ‘4’. The motivation was so inspiring that no one could keep up with Peter’s high intellect so the players just went on anyway and won the game by a massive 56 shots which was incredible.

Peter now has a regular gig!

All four rinks won which gave Cranbourne maximum points.

Skip Jammie Corney and his crew of Joe Byrne, John Stanley and Matt Stevens were in great form again and won by 20 shots while skips Lyn Quigg won by 14 shots, Doug Boggie by seven shots and Jay Tootell won by 15 shots.

It was a long drive home for the Monbulk players.

Cranbourne 110 (18 points) defeated Monbulk 54 (0 points) Side 2 - Division 2 Sec 6 No joy again for Cranbourne with a 37-shot loss to Keysborough.

The only winning rink was skip Harry Van Soest and his team of A J Nair, David McMaster, and Fritz Helle who won by a single shot.

Cranbourne 68 (2 points) lost to Keysborough 105 (16 points) Side 3 - Division 3 Sec 6 Cranbourne enjoyed a 34-shot win against Cranbourne RSL. An incredible result considering at the break only one shot separated the teams.

Casey-based Melbourne City travelled to face the lowly ranked Western Sydney Wanderers with City coming off a strong win against Newcastle and looking to leap to the top of the table.

City started strongly but failed to capitalise until the 36th minute when Mathew Lecki guided a header past the keeper.

Leckie found himself using his head again as he got on the end of a well-placed corner kick just before half time.

Melbourne had the opportunity to go 3-0 up but failed to convert a penalty. Star Striker Jamie Maclaren failed to convert, missing to the left his eighth goal for the season.

City quickly went up 3-0 through a Florin Berenguer wonder-strike that clattered the back of the net.

Melbourne City conceded a late penalty but came out 3-1 winners.
